City Fall Cleanup Day set for this Saturday Residents

(Seguin) – With new changes in store next week for trash pickup, City of Seguin officials are encouraging residents to take full advantage of this weekend’s 2024 Fall Clean-Up Day.
The City of Seguin is offering residents an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items during the free event to be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot located at 950 S. Austin St.
At this time, Seguin residents who live in the city limits will have an opportunity to get rid of all their bulky items – items that beginning next
week will no longer be picked up during their normal trash schedule. Instead, residents will have a scheduled time each quarter in which they can dispose of those items.
Jennifer Sourdellia, the city’s public information officer, says despite the upcoming changes, residents have come to take advantage of the annual Fall Clean Up.
“This is a prime opportunity for citizens to clear out their yards and homes of unwanted, broken or old items. We’ll take care of getting it disposed of safely and properly,” said Sourdellia. Cleanup, pg. 3
TLU picks up prestigious recognition from U.S. News & World Report
(Seguin) -- The results are in, and once again this year, Texas Lutheran University has been recognized as one of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges.
For the tenth year in a row, TLU has been ranked as a “Best” school in its region.
“These rankings bear testimony to the excellent education TLU offers,” says TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “Being consistently recognized among the best regional colleges reflects our dedication to nurturing the potential of every student, as well as the hard work and dedication of the entire university community.”
For the purposes of the U.S. News & World Report rankings, TLU is identified as a Regional College—defined as an institution focusing primarily on undergraduate education, which grants fewer than half of its degrees in liberal arts disciplines. A total of 397 schools were included in this category, and those were ranked within four regions: North, South, Midwest,
and West. This year, TLU earns the Number 9 overall spot in the West, an increase of two spots from last year’s ranking of 11.
Beyond that, TLU also ranked Number 5 in the region for Best Value, and Number 8 in the Best Colleges for Veterans category. This category recognizes schools that make pursuing a college education more affordable for veterans and active-duty service members.
Selecting a college or university is one of the most important and difficult decisions a student will make in their academic career.
This year, many first-year students chose TLU. The university welcomed 370 first-year students, its largest freshman class since the pandemic, 48 transfer students, and 75 graduate students, as well as 175 nursing students at its New Braunfels and Houston campuses.
Texas Celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day Sept. 28
(Austin) -- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) asks Texans to invite their friends and family into the outdoors to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF) on Sept. 28.
This annual holiday, celebrated on the fourth Saturday of September, recognizes hunters and anglers for their contributions to wildlife and conservation.
Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation supporting the special day, saying in part, “Hunting and fishing offer a variety of individual, as well as collective, benefits. Being able to provide for yourselves and your loved ones is an innate drive, and to this end, hunting
and fishing are unrivaled. These activities also deepen relationships with loved ones and with nature itself, boosting one’s mental and emotional wellness. Moreover, there are numerous economic and ecological benefits that these activities provide to a state that prides itself on its robust economy.”
Hunters and anglers primarily fund the state’s wildlife management programs through the purchase of hunting and fishing licenses, stamps and endorsements, as well as through taxes paid on hunting and fishing equipment, motorboat fuel, firearms and ammunition.

“The significant contribution made by Texas’ outdoors women and men toward research and species management is one of the reasons why the tradition of hunting and fishing in Texas has endured for generations,” said TPWD Executive Director David Yoskowitz. “Without the help of Texas’ hunters, anglers, and landowners, biologists would not be able to complete critical projects aimed at preserving and maintaining the state’s natural spaces and wildlife population. This year, in honor of National Hunting and Fishing Day, I invite all Texans to take a hunter education course, attend a neighborhood fishing event and learn how participating in these activities aids in conserving the environment and our native species.”
For many years, the proportion of people who hunt and fish in Texas has lagged behind huge increases in state population. While Texas experienced a pandemicinfluenced surge in outdoor recreation, it hasn’t created a significant long-term increase in the total number of people participating in hunting and fishing, which could spell problems for natural resource conservation in the future. Conservation is mostly funded by these participants.
In 2021, TPWD launched the Texas Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) Strategic Plan to connect more Texans to outdoor recreation and carry forward these time-honored traditions to future generations. Continued participation in fishing, boating, hunting and shooting sports helps fund efforts such as fish stocking, access and habitat improvements, and mentored hunting programs, which introduce new hunters to the sport in a safe environment.
In addition to conservation, TPWD endeavors to foster lifelong participants in hunting, fishing, boating, and shooting sports, and create a better-informed public with more interest in conserving wild things and wild places in Texas and beyond.

To learn about hunting, take an online or in-person hunter education course. Hunter education certification is required for anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 and equips them with the necessary tools and information they need to be safe in the field: basics about firearm safety, species identification, zones of fire and more.
TPWD also offers mentored hunting workshops to introduce new hunters to the experience and teach needed skills. The Hunting for Beginners webpage also offers a wealth of information.
Texans who want to learn to fish can also find many resources on the TPWD Fishing for Beginners webpage: how to get started, safety, basic gear assembly, tackle boxes and supplies, bait and lures, how to cast and more.
Individuals interested in becoming a volunteer fishing instructor can visit the TPWD angler education instructor website. Fishing events around the state are listed on the online event page and no license is required to fish from the shore or dock at a Texas State Park.
Congress launched NHF Day in 1971 to recognize hunters and anglers for their leadership in wildlife and conservation. In 1972, Richard Nixon signed the first presidential proclamation to hold it on the fourth Saturday in September every year to celebrate the rich tradition of hunting, target shooting and fishing.

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran men’s and women’s basketball will host the third annual Bulldog Bash at Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 PM. Bulldog Bash adds to a jam-packed Homecoming Weekend for Texas Lutheran athletics that will also see both teams host alumni games on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Bulldogs’ annual event celebrates the start of the college basketball season for both teams. The two teams will be introduced to the soundtrack by DJ Millionaire while also partaking in a skills contest, three-point contest, beat the clock challenge, and more with the men’s basketball dunk contest as the main event.
“I started hosting this at my alma mater and was happy to get this event started here at TLU,” said TLU Sports Information Director Bryce Hayes. “Watching the growth from year one to year two was crazy to witness and being able to place it on such a big weekend not only for football for homecoming, but a massive weekend for Texas Lutheran athletics in general - I think this is the year it becomes a full-time staple within TLU athletics. Roberta “Birdie” Blumberg Kuempel, age 80 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on September 21, 2024. Birdie was born on October 10, 1943 in Seguin, Texas to Nola (Behrendt) and Robert Blumberg.
A lifelong resident of Seguin, Birdie graduated from Seguin High School and earned her degree in education from Texas Lutheran College. It was there that Birdie met the love of her life, Edmund Kuempel, to whom she was married for 45 years until his passing in 2010. Together they lovingly raised their two children, Margaret and John, and devoted much of their lives to the Seguin community. Birdie worked a number of years as a middle school teacher until retiring after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her determined spirit and tenacity were unmatched. Birdie was known for her colorful personality – reflected in her clothes and in her home, which was always decorated in the spirit of the season. Birdie enjoyed many hobbies over the years including bridge, needlepoint, gardening, and her monthly book club and was an active member of the Legislative Ladies Club. Always up for a welty around town or a drive along country roads, Birdie, a proud wife and mother, loved her family and was a steadfast presence in their lives.

Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.
As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Charles (Chuck) David Teal, 76 years, of McQueeney Texas, passed away at his home on September 16, 2024. He was born on November 14, 1947, in Wichita, TX to the late Claude Durwood and Janet Leah (Wasson) Teal.
He married the love of his life, Vickie Teal. He served and was a proud Vietnam Army Veteran. He loved being a nurse for over 31 years and made many lifelong friends throughout those years! He also loved to fish but he didn’t like to eat the fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vickie Teal, one brother Barry Teal, and one sister Jo Currie.

Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.

FTC Takes Action Against Pharmacies Inflating Insulin Prices
(Washington, DC) -- The three biggest pharmacy benefit managers are being accused of artificially inflating insulin prices. The FCC says CVS Health’s Caremark Rx, Cigna’s Express Scripts and United Health Group’s OptumRx created a system that puts importance on high rebates from drug manufacturers, leading to high list prices for insulin. The companies excluded available insulin products with lower prices that would have been more affordable for patients in favor of higher-priced versions of the drug.
Pope Francis Cancels Audiences Due To “Mild Flu”
(Vatican City) -- Pope Francis is cancelling today’s audiences due to a mild flu. A statement from the Vatican is calling it a “precautionary measure.” The pope says he’s chosen to rest ahead of another trip scheduled for later this week. Pope Francis is set to leave for Luxembourg and Belgium on Thursday and return on Sunday. The pontiff recently returned from a 12-day trip to Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
NY Reports First Human Case In A Decade of EEE
(Kingston, NY) -- For the first time in a decade, New York is reporting a case of eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, a rare mosquito-borne virus. The New York State Department of Health says the virus was identified in Ulster County and the person has been hospitalized. It’s the first recorded case of EEE in New York state since 2015. Eastern equine encephalitis is a serious and fatal mosquito-borne disease with no vaccine,” New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said in a statement. The human case follows a confirmed case of the virus in a horse in Ulster County.
Virus Connected To Rare Paralyzing Illness In Kids Could Rise
(Undated) -- High levels of a respiratory virus have been found in wastewater samples nationwide. The virus, enterovirus D68, has been associated with paralysis in some kids raising concerns of a possible rise in the U.S., according to a report from WastewaterSCAN. Those with the highest risk of getting symptoms of D68 include infants, children, and teenagers, according to the CDC. Dr. Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, New York, characterized AFM as “a rare but potentially very serious illness that can mimic polio and can cripple children.” Health experts say the virus is spread through coughing, sneezing and touching contaminated surfaces.

The City of Seguin is now accepting applications for the Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program. Applicants may be eligible to receive up to a 75 percent matching grant, with a maximum grant awarded to an applicant not to exceed $10,000. Improvements and other expenditures eligible under the Seguin BIG Program include facade improvements, sign improvements, site improvements, and other real property improvements. The Girl Scout Troop 4754 is collecting supplies for Seguin Animal Services and the Guadalupe County Humane Society as part of their work earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award. City of Seguin Trash Service Changes
The City of Seguin will have changes to its Trash Service beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four key changes are: Carts must be out by 6 a.m., all items must be in carts, there will now be quarterly bulky item pick-up, and you will need vouchers for extra bulk items. Residents can receive up to four free vouchers per year. Vouchers are available at the City Secretary’s Office inside Seguin City Hall, located at 205 N. The TLU Jessie S. and Jack Harold Upton Brown Cultural Enrichment Fund will present Elizabeth Smart at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Jackson Auditorium on the campus of Texas Lutheran University. Elizabeth Smart is a victim of one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time and has become a beacon of hope and an advocate for change related to child abduction and recovery programs. The TLU Jessie S. and Jack Harold Upton Brown Cultural Enrichment Fund will present The Second City 65th Anniversary Show at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 at Jackson Auditorium on the campus of Texas Lutheran University. There will be handpicked songs, sketches, and characters written by Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Bill Murray, Keegan Michael Key, Eugene Levy, and other star-studded alumni of The Second City.
