After multiple screenings around the world, Local Filmmaker Don Cunningham welcomes the Texas premiere of his short gothic horror film, The Castle of Baron Finch. The film will be among the many to be shown at this weekend’s Scrambled Genius Film Festival at the Palace Theatre. See story on page 2.
(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD is now accepting applications for its District 1 seat, which will be vacant after the Nov. 5, 2024 election.
The current District 1 trustee, Board Vice President Carl Jenkins, has chosen not to run for re-election. According to Emily Allen, the communications director for the Seguin ISD, no one filed to run for the seat by the Aug. 19 filing deadline.
Seguin ISD District 1 residents interested in serving on the district’s school board are invited to send a letter of interest and a resume to pnramirez@seguin.k12. tx.us through Oct. 25 at 5 p.m.
Eligible candidates must live in District 1, between TX-46 and Kingsbury Road,
up to the district’s northern boundary line. Maps of the Seguin ISD single-member districts are online at https:// www.seguin.k12.tx.us/page/ board.districts.
Trustees will review submissions and conduct interviews with selected candidates on Nov. 6. The board plans to appoint the new District 1 trustee at its Nov. 19 regular school board meeting.
The appointed trustee will serve the full fouryear term, which expires in November 2028.
Those with specific questions are encouraged to contact Superintendent Secretary Nancy Ramirez at (830) 401-8614 or via email at pnramirez@ seguin.k12.tx.us.
Seguin ISD says no to homeschool students wishing to participate in UIL events
(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD will not be welcoming local homeschool students to join its UIL activities.
Emily Allen, Seguin ISD’s director of communications, says the school board on Tuesday unanimously voted against the opportunity which was recently allowed by state legislation HB 547. According to that legislation, Texas school districts are allowed to invite non-enrolled homeschool students to join its programs. That opportunity, however, must independently be approved by each school district.
“Our board, the four members who were in attendance voted unanimously to not allow nonenrolled students to represent the district in UIL sponsored activities. That is almost the motion verbatim and what that means specifically is that we will not be opening up our UIL activities to students who are not fully enrolled in our district at this time. As for whether it will be revisited, I don’t believe that was the intention, but I can’t say for sure,” said Allen.
Among those helping the school board determine whether the benefits outweigh the potential challenges of allowing homeschoolers to participate in Seguin ISD activities was Athletic Director Craig Dailey. In his presentation, Dailey highlighted the financial concerns of saying yes. He says the funding allocation only includes $1,500 per UIL activity. He says this is regardless of the number of participating homeschool students. He adds that the administrative cost “of managing multiple non-enrolled students will likely outweigh the financial benefit. In addition, he questioned possible issues with maintaining academic integrity. He stated, this “could compromise the high academic
standards and fairness” that they uphold for all students.”
Trustee Josh Bright made the motion not to move forward with the idea. Bright says his decision was based on current staffing, the administrative costs, and the time it would take to manage these additional students.
“Extra-curricular was extracurricular before school or after school. Almost all of our programs, except for like two of all of our UIL programs – there’s a lot more than just sports and fine arts -- have a class associated with it and that’s the biggest thing. It just doesn’t do justice to that student, to their experience and their learning and their education,” said Bright.
Following the vote, Board President Alejandro Guerra stressed the importance and variation of UIL activities for those who choose public education.
“As a parent or guardian, you have choices on how to provide the appropriate education for your children. Some of those choices include public education or homeschooling. Both choices have
unique activities. The Seguin ISD offers UIL activities that often yield positive outcomes which extend beyond high school graduation. Most of our UIL programs have received regional, state and national recognition. We feel that the current academics offered by our district play a vital role that complements these recognitions. We welcome all Seguin ISD students to take advantage of all the UIL activities that we offer by enrolling. In addition to our UIL activities, our district also offers other great programs such as CTE and Early College High School,” said Guerra.
Despite the item coming before the board, there didn’t appear to be an overwhelming request for homeschool participation. That’s at least according to Trustee Denise Crettenden who didn’t have many public requests.
There is currently only 37 Texas ISDs that are not charter schools participating out of over 1,000 districts in the state. There is also no other District 13 5A or District 27 5A allowing homeschool participants. The closest school district to participate is the Lockhart ISD.
Short film finally arrives back home for special screening
Seguin invited to Scrambled Genius Film Festival
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – After multiple screenings in Canada, Italy, France and Greece, one local film maker says he’s finally ready to share his short gothic horror film with Seguin.
Don Cunningham’s short film, “The Castle of Baron Finch,” will have its first Texas premier this Saturday during the Scrambled Genius Film Festival at the Palace Theatre.
It was back in May when Cunningham talked in depth with the Seguin Daily News about the locally shot film. At the time, he was excited that it had been selected for a Canadian Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Musical Score. He says it’s been a project he has worked on for the last six years. He describes the project as “more of a classical cinema piece as opposed to the modern-day jump, scare, horror and gore type” of film.
The plot centers around English physician Dr. Cushing who comes to Germany on the trail of a sadistic vampire that captured his wife.
He says the film is “kind of a homage” to the classic
monster movies of the 20s and 30s.
“One of the festivals that I had submitted to was San Marcos Lost River Film Festival and they have sister festivals, and they decided to go ahead and program it at the one here in Seguin, the Scrambled Genius Film Festival, so that’s the perfect opportunity for the Texas premiere –you know my own hometown. I couldn’t be more excited that they chose to play it here,” said Cunningham.
Cunningham’s short film will get underway on Saturday at 1:30p.m. “The Castle of Baron Finch” will be one of several films that will be shown during the weekend showcase. Films begin as early at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Palace located at 314 S. Austin St. A weekend badge (Saturday and Sunday) is $10 a person and can be purchased online at thelostriverfilmfest.org.
Cunningham says next week, the locally produced film will be on its way for a special screening in the Netherlands.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Lady Mats take over first place in district with victory over unbeaten Burbank
Chris Austin
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors took over sole possession of first place in District 27-5A with a sweep of red-hot San Antonio Burbank in a battle of district unbeaten teams on Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym.
Seguin won the match in three close sets 25-23, 25-20, 25-21. The Lady Mats, who have not lost a set in seven district matches, cooled down the Lady Bulldogs who came to Seguin on a 12-game winning streak. Burbank threatened to end Seguin’s set streak in the third by jumping out to a 14-8 lead, but the Lady Mats went on a 17-7 run to close the final set to earn the win.
Prior to the match the Burbank volleyball team presented flowers to Christina Belicek, the mother of Chloe Belicek, the Seguin volleyball player who passed away on July 25th following injuries sustained in a car crash.
Seguin head coach Ashley Farris evoked the memories of Chloe when asked about her team’s comeback after the match.
“We talk a lot about having Chloe mentality because Chole Belicek never gave up on a single thing in her life,” Farris said. “And we’re just continuing remembering her and we honor her with that mentality and it showed tonight.”
Sophomore Elli Anderson led the Lady Mats with 15 kills in the victory. Junior setter Gisele Morales had 32 assists. Senior Karina Lerma punched through 12 kills and she had 22 digs to surpass 1000 digs in her career.
The first-place Seguin Lady Matadors will next play San Antonio Brackenridge on Saturday. The Lady Eagles and Lady Mats will meet at Noon on Saturday at the Alamo Convention Center.
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers improved their record to 22-11 with a home sweep of New Braunfels Long Creek on Tuesday.
Navarro took the match, 25-11, 25-9, 25-9. The Lady Panthers have won four straight. Navarro will open District 26-4A play on Friday when they host Wimberley.
(San Antonio) -- And the Marion Lady Bulldogs fell on the road to San Antonio Davenport on Tuesday night in their final non-district match of the season.
Davenport took the match 25-15, 25-9, 25-4. The Lady Bulldogs concluded their non-district schedule with 10 wins. Marion will open District 27-3A play on Friday at Great Hearts Monte Vista.

Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.
As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
As an amateur genealogist, she proudly kept great records of her family tree
Charles (Chuck) David Teal, 76 years, of McQueeney Texas, passed away at his home on September 16, 2024. He was born on November 14, 1947, in Wichita, TX to the late Claude Durwood and Janet Leah (Wasson) Teal.
He married the love of his life, Vickie Teal. He served and was a proud Vietnam Army Veteran. He loved being a nurse for over 31 years and made many lifelong friends throughout those years! He also loved to fish but he didn’t like to eat the fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vickie Teal, one brother Barry Teal, and one sister Jo Currie.
and Texas-German heritage. She loved to share stories passed down through generations about the struggles and the early years of German settlers to our area. Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.
