City to host Fall Clean-Up Day this Saturday City ready to accept junk, scrap metal during annual clean-up effort By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is again giving you the opportunity to spruce up your homes for the holidays by offering this weekend's Fall Clean-Up Day. The free opportunity to get rid of those unwanted items around your home will be held this Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.

Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says the city hosts clean-up days every fall and spring. She says the clean-up allows citizens to get into the habit of clearing out their yards and homes of all those unwanted or broken items. "People can bring some of the things

they want to get rid of to the Seguin Coliseum parking lot and we will have our city staff available to help unload their trailers or the back of their pickup trucks whenever they bring their items," said Sourdellia. While most things are eligible for disposal, Sourdellia says there are still some items that won't be accepted. See CLEAN-UP, page 2

Seguin Marching Festival to return to Matador Stadium this weekend By Cindy AguirreHerrera

RECEIVE (Seguin) -- The Seguin Marching Festival will celebrate its third annual contest with the largest number of bands ever. This Saturday, the festival will welcome a total of 15 bands to Seguin High School's Matador Stadium. The Matador Band, with the help of the Matador Band Booster Club, will be hosting area bands for a day of performance and instruction.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE

Band Director Stan Mauldin says the festival has grown in popularity thanks to its unique and innovative schedule.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adorned, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever.

He says after having attended hundreds of contests, the idea generated in Seguin was to ensure that the festival was a resource for growth and continued learning. "We were thinking, wouldn't it be really neat if we went to a band contest and did certain things like when we got finished with prelims, if the judges would come talk to us. Most contests don't have that so we want to have these people who we brought in from all over the state to come talk to the kids and say some of the things they usually say in band class everyday but they see it with fresh eyes and fresh ears and they get to see and hear it in a different way and they tell the kids directly. After that, we thought, wouldn't it be really neat after we have the judges talk to us if we could come and watch the video and see what they were talking about. So then we would come into our band hall and then watch a video when they are finished with that and then the last thing is wouldn't it be really neat if everybody could make finals. So, it's a prelims and finals event," said Mauldin.

Sacred Heart of Jesus pray for us St. Jude worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude helper of the hopeless situations, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day by the 8th day your prayer will be answered. Say it for 9 days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude L.M.R

Mauldin says giving bands an opportunity to interact with the judges may also be just one the most unique components behind this contest.

and the five judges and just chat about whatever we chat about -- the band, the kids, whatever you know -and so that has turned into a huge event. All the staffs come in from all the schools and we bring in supper and we've got that donated now. American Classics, it's a tour company, is now donating that supper and they are helping us bring all these people together so we can just collaborate and have a good time," said Mauldin.

"The neatest thing that we've done is (say) it would be so cool for us to have supper with the band directors

Participating schools include Karnes City, La Grange, Nixon-Smiley, McCollum, Southwest, Bastrop,

Harlandale, Del Valle, Flatonia, San Marcos, MacArthur and Judson.

Shiner, Davis,

Mauldin says band participants in total will be about 2,500 kids. He says hosting the festival is also a win-win for the community as it gets an economic boost during this final weekend of September. "And look at 2,500 kids and ask how many of those are going to bring parents that will eat at our restaurants and buy fuel at our gas stations. So it's a big day for Seguin," said Mauldin.

The preliminary contest will run from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Following dinner with the judges, the bands will again hit the field for finals. Finals will run from 6:45 to 10:15 p.m. Although the Matador Band will not be competing in the festival, a special exhibition performance will help wrap up the day. That performance will be held at 10:30 p.m. followed by awards at 10:45 p.m. Tickets to watch the festival are $10 each. Concessions will be available.

TLU seeks solution to Southwestern puzzle, Saturday's ASC clash to air on KWED (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran looks to snap a four-game head-tohead losing streak to Southwestern University on Saturday when the teams square off in American Southwest Conference action at Bulldog Stadium. After defeating TLU twice in 2016, each program's final year of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, the Pirates have handed the Bulldogs lopsided losses to finish each of the past two seasons - 51-33 in 2017 and 59-35 last year. Carl Gustafson's third TLU squad enters the 2019 matchup with a 1-1 record after falling to Hendrix 26-23 on Sept. 14 and opening ASC play with a 31-21 road win at East Texas Baptist last Saturday. Southwestern is off to a 2-0 start with a pair of blowout wins in head coach Joe Austin's seventh season. The Pirates dispatched Sewanee on the road 47-7 on Sept. 7 and opened conference play with a 50-3 pasting of Louisiana College last week. Southwestern pits an offense averaging 502 total yards and 318

rushing yards per game against a veteran TLU defense allowing just 121 yards per outing on the ground while limiting opponents to 31 percent on third down. The Pirates have spread the offensive workload among multiple players in the early part of the season. Southwestern has given at least 12 carries to six different runners, with reserve freshman quarterback Landry Gilpin posting a team-high 149 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts. Four Pirates have attempted passes. Coleman Kerr and Austin Emery are each 6-9 for 152 yards and two scores, with all of Kerr's attempts and completions coming last Saturday against Louisiana College. David Brandenburg leads the receiving corps with 152 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. Texas Lutheran counters with a ground attack producing 291.5 rushing yards per game and 5.2 per carry on the strength of runningbacks Ian Leslie (177 yds.), Chris Monroe (167 yds., TD), and Austin Matthews (163 yds., TD). Sophomore quarterback Wade Freeman is the reigning ASC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

after going 10-14 for 151 yards and three touchdowns through the air while running for 58 yards and a score in the win over East Texas Baptist. Mason Perkins has emerged as his top target thus far with nine catches for 151 yards and a touchdown. C.J. Romero hauled in two TD receptions last Saturday. Junior linebacker Dakwa Davis has been the Bulldogs' top all-around defender through two games. He enters Saturday with a teamhigh 26 tackles, 2.5 for loss, and an interception. The Southwestern defense is only giving up 262.5 total yards per game and just 1.9 yards per carry on rushing plays. The Pirates have recorded seven sacks and hauled in four interceptions while limiting opponents to an 18.5 percent conversion rate on third down. Defensive end Garrett Womack has two sacks and four tackles-for-loss. TLU and Southwestern kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Seguin. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 5:30.

Lifegate looks to extend winning streak at Smoking For Jesus Ministry (Burnet) - The Lifegate six-man football chases its fourth consecutive win Friday when the Falcons head to Burnet to face the Smoking For Jesus Ministry Eagles. Lifegate (3-1) has defeated three straight opponents with the 45-point mercy rule, most recently in a 55-6 shellacking of Granbury North Central Texas Academy in Temple last Friday. Junior spread-back Quinten Shellnut turned in

the most explosive performance of his career last week with 348 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 22 carries. The outburst lifted his season totals to 686 yards and 18 scores on the ground to go with 329 yards and four touchdowns through the air. "Q is one of our leaders, and he really stepped up and became a real leader that game," Lifegate head coach John Stout said. "He actually was pushing on the guys and getting them

to do right. We did a lot of little things right. There's still a little bit we've got to work on, but we did a lot of things right, and it helped us out." The Falcons other statistical leaders include Zach McCulloch (118 receiving yds., 3 TD), Shellnut on defense with 27 tackles and an interception, Barson Schmidt (6 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries), and Joseph Menchaca (3 fumble recoveries.) Smoking For Jesus enters Friday with a 2-2 record after last Friday's 58-12 loss to

Corpus Christi-Arlington Heights. Marvin Glaspie III leads the Eagles in rushing with 428 yards and four touchdowns, while Isaac Legier has thrown for 143 yards and three scores. Their best defender is Charles Frazier, Jr. (45 tackles, 12 TFL, 3 sacks). The Falcons and Eagles kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Burnet. A complete interview with Stout can be heard during the Falcon Report between 6:45 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Navarro seeks 5-0 start in home date with Giddings, Friday's game to air on KWED late September. Giddings opened the current season with consecutive losses to Rockdale (48-24) and Wimberley (29-22), defeated Taylor 44-0 in Week 3, and came up short to Cameron-Yoe 4927 last Friday. The Panthers are pummeling opposing defenses to the tune of 437 rushing yards per game and 8.9 per carry. Senior fullback Euler Deleon has been the most prolific cog in the machine with 645 yards (12.4 per carry) and nine touchdowns. Junior halfback Jean "MoMo" Sims (299 yds., 8.8 avg., 3 TD) and senior tailback Kyle Dietert (213 yds., 12.5 avg., 3 TD) have complimented Deleon impressively while All-District speedster Johnny Alegria has missed time with an injury. Navarro looks to keep the Slot-T rolling against a Giddings defense that gave up big numbers in three of its first four games, but is built to stand up against run-heavy offenses, according to Blount. "Their d-line and linebackers are as good as we've seen. It's set up to stop the run. They've got to beat Bellville and they've got to beat La Grange if they're going to compete in their district, and those are running programs. So this is going to be a better matchup for us than the 1-3 record looks like." Senior quarterback Alex DeLaTorre is the fuel in the Buffaloes' offensive engine. He isn't a particularly accurate passer (22-of61, 36 percent), but his completions have yielded 468 yards, an average of 21.3 per catch, and six touchdowns against two interceptions. DeLaTorre is also the team's leading rusher with 345 yards (6.2 per carry) and six touchdowns. "He's a big momentum guy," Blount said of DeLaTorre. "Once he has a big run, he starts running harder and gets more comfortable passing, so we've got to get on him early. We can't let him have any confidence - we can't let him have anything big to start out with. It's just staying on him, flying to the football like we have been, and sticking to our keys."

Junior halfback Jean "MoMo" Sims ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns in last Friday's road win over La Grange. Photo by Jacqueline Springs. (Geronimo) - Navarro wraps up the non-district portion of its 2019 football season Friday with a chance to take a 5-0 record into the bye week as the Giddings Buffaloes visit the Panthers at Erwin-Lee Field. A nearly unstoppable Slot-T rushing attack and a defense that hasn't skipped a beat after replacing nine AllDistrict graduates in the off-season have sparked Navarro to wins

over Gonzales (17-16), Marion (55-15), Marble Falls (33-7) and La Grange (55-22) in Rod Blount's second year as head coach. Giddings has struggled to a 1-3 start in the first month of Wade Griffin's second season after going 11-2 in 2018. The Buffaloes reeled off seven straight wins and advanced to the third round of the Region III playoffs a year ago after losing to Navarro 28-7 in

Navarro's defense has limited opponents to 15 points and 211.5 total yards per game, a 36 percent conversion rate on third down, and just 3.6 yards per carry on rushing players. Friday's kickoff at Erwin-Lee Field is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 with the Seguin, Marion, and Lifegate coaches' shows.

(Universal City) - The Marion football program's pursuit of a fifth straight district championship and a second consecutive 15-3A-Division I title begins Friday with the short drive up FM 78 for a road clash with the Randolph RoHawks. The Bulldogs snapped a twogame skid and improved to 2-2 in Ryne Miller's second year as head coach with a 35-27 home win over Hondo last Friday. Coming off a 5-6 season in 2018, veteran head coach Pete Wesp's Ro-Hawks are off to a 3-1 start this season with a 16-12 win over Poth, a 27-21 loss to Natalia, and a 4724 victory over Johnson City, and a 14-

7 win last Friday over the Blanco team that edged Marion 36-35 in Week 3. Randolph has utilized its traditional option attack to grind out 314 rushing yards per game and 6.9 per carry. Jaden Arthur (560 yds, 8.9 avg., 9 TD) and Maximus Hill (273 yds., 2 TD) have been the top individuals in the Ro-Hawks' backfield. Quarterback Jack Morrison has been efficient in limited passing opportunities, completing 16-24 for 217 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Marion counters with a rapidly improving aerial attack led by senior quarterback Zach Goodwin, who enters Friday

with 846 passing yards, a 61.8 percent completion rate, and eight touchdowns to go with 193 yards and two scores on the ground. Other offensive standouts include running-back Ray Rayos (165 rushing yds., TD) and receivers Jayden Williams (16 rec., 302 yds., 2 TD), Jacob Devora (19 rec., 239 yds., 2 TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt (6 rec., 94 yds., 2 TD). Friday's kickoff at Randolph's Mickler Memorial Field is set for 7:30 p.m. An interview with Marion head coach Ryne Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report in the 6:30 - 7:00 block on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.
