(Seguin) – Texas high school bands from across the region will get a jump start on their contest season during this weekend’s Seguin Marching Festival. A total of 10 teams will be traveling to Seguin this Saturday for the annual contest and showcase at Matador Stadium.
Band Director Marc Telles says Seguin is thrilled to host the popular contest again. He says the bands represent quality schools and communities throughout the area.
“This is year seven for the Seguin Marching Festival not including the COVID year, but this is our 7th festival that we have had here in Seguin. It’s been a tremendous opportunity for bands in the
area to come together here in the city of Seguin and perform here at Matador Stadium. We always have a world class set for judges that evaluate all the bands and provide high quality feedback for the bands and for the students so that they are able to continue growth through their marching season in hopes to perform well for their UIL and all the evaluations they have after our festival. Typically, our festival is one of the first contests that schools will go to during their season. So, it’s a great first benchmark for them,” said Telles.

(Seguin) – A small-town family comedy with a Texas twist returns to the local stage the next two weekends at the Texas Theatre.
Tickets are now on sale for Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?
If the play by Del Shores sounds familiar, it should be. That’s because it was just over a year ago that the show was performed in Seguin.
The show this time, however, is under the direction of Amy Pawelek. Pawelek, who is also a member of the cast says she just felt that it was time to bring it back.
“It’s about family. It’s about love. It’s about all the things that go on in the family and the mishaps in a small country town and I loved it then and I thought I want to bring that happiness and fun back to Seguin again,” said Pawelek.
Although this is a comedy, cast member Robin Shellard says it’s also a touching story about family and living through difficult times.
“The emotion that is expressed in the show was really how families deal with things. Some people laugh through it. Some people cry through it and we all give one another our space to experience it and then the family, I think we do a good job of showing that emotion, letting you see that it is real family and letting you feel that this a real situation,” said Shellard.
Pawelek says tickets are available online only, which is new this year.
She says it means that you can purchase your tickets from the comfort of your home and select your seats before you arrive.
“I strongly suggest, please run, grab your tickets now. You want to see this show. Let’s bring some laughter and happiness to all of us,” said Pawelek.
Show times this weekend are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. The show continues on Friday. Oct. 4 and Saturday, 0ct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. A Sunday matinee is also scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 6
Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at thetexas.org.

(Seguin) – The season’s north winds couldn’t have picked a better time to arrive than for tonight’s Movie in the Park event at Max Starcke Park.
Jennifer Sourdellia, the public information officer for the city of Seguin, says the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging folks to spend their Friday night at the park for the final movie of the 2024 season.
“This is going to be our last movie of the summer although it is not technically summer anymore. We are just inviting everybody to come out and enjoy our movie in the park. It’s going to be held over at Starcke Park East at the pavilion. So, come out and join us. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Bring your family. Bring your friends and come and enjoy the movie,” said Sourdellia.
Due to some licensing regulations, Sourdellia says she can’t say what the movie will be. However, according to the Seguin Parks & Recreation Facebook page, the film will be none other than the Barbie movie.
Sourdellia says thanks to its sponsor HEB, the movie series continues to be a success and looks forward to families coming down and making themselves comfortable.
“Bring your own chairs, blankets and snacks. We will have food trucks out there ahead of time. So, if you want to bring your own snacks and your drinks, you are more than welcome to do that or you can just get something to eat at one of our food trucks,” said Sourdellia.
The free movie begins at 7:30 p.m. at the large pavilion at Max Starcke Park East.
The City of Seguin is offering residents an opportunity to get rid of unwanted items during the free event to be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Seguin Coliseum parking lot located at

950 S. Austin St. Only Seguin residents who live in the city limits can participate in the Clean Up Day event. Participants are required to provide proof of residency by showing a photo ID or utility bill.
He says whether it’s welcoming these guests on the street or cheering on the students in the stands, he hopes that Seguin comes out to show its support.
“We want as many people to come to the event as possible. Our performers thrive off audience reaction. That is the whole point of what we do is to create a connection with our audience and the more people attend, the more fans that we have supporting our teams not just for the Matador Band but for everybody that attends. So, we want our fans to join us and to help us hype up all of the student performers throughout the day,” said Telles.
The participating bands include Flatonia; La Vernia, Gonzales, Floresville, Cedar Creek, Smithson Valley, Shiner, Roosevelt, Canyon, Del Valle and Wagner High Schools.
Prelims begin at 1:15 p.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. Awards plus the announcement of finalists will be at 4:45 p.m.
Following the finales, the hosting band, the Seguin Matadors, will help wrap up the festival by performing at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Kids 5 and under are free. Both cash and card will be accepted at the gate.
City employees will be available to assist residents with unloading items from trucks and trailers. A list of all items that will be accepted can be found on the city of Seguin website or Facebook page.

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers start District 13-4A play in week five of the season with rival Wimberley on Friday at Erwin-Lee Field.
The Panthers went 1-3 in non-district. Navarro faded late in a 3821 loss at La Vernia last Friday. The Texans went 2-2 in non-district and are ranked 10th in the latest Class 4A Division 2 poll.
Wimberley and Navarro have been longtime district rivals, the teams have even met numerous times in the playoffs. The Navarro Lady Panther volleyball team will also host Wimberley on Friday night and Panther head football coach Rod Blount says he’s excited for both teams to be playing the Texans in Geronimo.
“It doesn’t get any better than games like this. Two very good programs battling it out. Same thing with the volleyball.,” Blount said. “It’s exciting to have the volleyball crowd and have them walk over and watch the football game. It’s gonna be a great atmosphere. Erwin-Lee is gonna be rocking and it’s always great to have this game at home.”
The Navarro Panthers and Wimberley Texans will kickoff at 7:30 on Friday evening at Erwin-Lee in Geronimo.
(Poteet) -- The Marion Bulldogs will wrap their non-district season on Friday night in Poteet.
The Bulldogs and Aggies sport identical 1-3 records as both teams play their final non-district games of the season.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller says his team will look to take advantage of their final tune-up before the District 13-3A season starts in Luling next week.
“We’re always gonna preach ball security, eliminating penalties.
We don’t want any mental bluffs,” Miller said. “Poteet gives us some different looks on defense to fine tune everything and make sure our guys feel comfortable in different situations. And (our) defense will be put in different situations, too and you’re always looking at special teams. So, we’ll try to fine tune all that stuff before we get cranked up in district.”
Friday night’s game between Poteet and Marion kicks off at 7 p.m. at Poteet High School.
(Boerne) -- And the Seguin Matadors will be in the Hill Country on Friday to face District 13-5A foe Boerne Champion.
The Mats won their district opener, 37-30 at home against Victoria East last Friday, while the Chargers fell, 42-10 last week at Smithson Valley. Friday night’s game between Boerne Champion and Seguin kicks off at 7 p.m. at Boerne ISD Stadium.
We’ll have week five of High School Football Friday Night on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 on Friday evening. The Panther report will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.

Verna Mae Strempel, age 84 of Seguin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2024. Verna was born on June 19, 1940 in Guadalupe County to Bertha (Friedeck) and Harry Baerwald.
She is preceded in death by her son, Terry Wayne Strempel, son-in-law, Buddy Bloch and her parents.

Roberta “Birdie” Blumberg Kuempel, age 80 of Seguin, Texas, passed away on September 21, 2024. Birdie was born on October 10, 1943 in Seguin, Texas to Nola (Behrendt) and Robert Blumberg.
A lifelong resident of Seguin, Birdie graduated from Seguin High School and earned her degree in education from Texas Lutheran College. It was there that Birdie met the love of her life, Edmund Kuempel, to whom she was married for 45 years until his passing in 2010. Together they lovingly raised their two children, Margaret and John, and devoted much of their lives to the Seguin community. Birdie worked a number of years as a middle school teacher until retiring after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her determined spirit and tenacity were unmatched. Birdie was known for her colorful personality – reflected in her clothes and in her home, which was always decorated in the spirit of the season. Birdie enjoyed many hobbies over the years including bridge, needlepoint, gardening, and her monthly book club and was an active member of the Legislative Ladies Club. Always up for a welty around town or a drive along country roads, Birdie, a proud wife and mother, loved her family and was a steadfast presence in their lives.

Evelyn Louise Kallies Neumann, age 96 of Seguin, passed away on September 23, 2024.
Evelyn was born in Gonzales County, Texas on July 11, 1928 to Frances Ida (Jahns) and Arnold August Kallies. She attended both Dowdy School and Demmer School and was a graduate of the Dowdy High School Class of 1945. She married Roland Neumann on September 5, 1948.
For seven years she worked for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and in 1969 went to work for the Seguin Independent School District as an instructional teacher’s aide until retiring in 1994.
Evelyn will be remembered as an active member of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and Bible School for ten years.
She was a member of the Hermann Sons Life Seguin Lodge # 37 where she served many years as the recording secretary and dance class officer. Other memberships included the American Legion Auxiliary Post 245 in Seguin, serving as the past education chairman. She was also actively involved as a den mother for the Cub Scouts in Seguin.
Evelyn loved dancing to polka music, Friday nights at the Kingsbury Opry and attending other country music shows. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, playing bingo, dominoes, cards, bunco and board games. Family was very important to her and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her loving husband Roland, her parents, her brother Leslie “Pete” Kallies and his wife Dorothy “Dottie” and stepmother, Clara Kallies.

Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories. As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Charles (Chuck) David Teal, 76 years, of McQueeney Texas, passed away at his home on September 16, 2024. He was born on November 14, 1947, in Wichita, TX to the late Claude Durwood and Janet Leah (Wasson) Teal.
He married the love of his life, Vickie Teal. He served and was a proud Vietnam Army Veteran. He loved being a nurse for over 31 years and made many lifelong friends throughout those years! He also loved to fish but he didn’t like to eat the fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vickie Teal, one brother Barry Teal, and one sister Jo Currie.

Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.

A new study shows that 76 breast carcinogens from food contact materials can be found in people. Researchers reported their findings in the journal “Frontiers in Toxicology.” This comes as rates of early-onset breast cancer in younger women are increasing.
(Washington, DC) -- A bipartisan bill to crack down on the financing of fentanyl has been signed into law. It calls on the General Accounting Office to do a deep dive on how the drug cartels are laundering the cash. The legislation was co-authored by Texas Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz. The GOP lawmaker says the synthetic opioid’s rise is an unprecedented crisis. The latest CDC numbers show that more than 107-thousand people in the U.S. died from drug overdoses last year with two-thirds of those deaths linked to fentanyl.
Ozempic Producer CEO Faces Congressional Hearing
(Washington, DC) -- The CEO of Novo Nordisk is in hot water over the rising cost of the company’s popular weight loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy. On Tuesday, Senators questioned Lars Jørgensen [[ Your-gun-sun ]] and demanded answers for why the U.S. faces a higher price for those drugs than other countries. Senator Bernie Sanders, the chair of the Senate Health Committee, said Americans should be treated the same as people across the globe, and demanded the company “Stop ripping us off.” Novo Nordisk charges 969-dollars per month for Ozempic in the U.S., compared to 155-dollars a month in Canada and just 59-dollars in Germany. The prices are slightly higher for Wegovy, but the difference in cost between the US and other countries remains.
(Houston, TX) -- A newly-published report says there’s a likely link between COVID and diabetes. It suggests the virus is creating inflammation in the pancreas. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says this study comes as a growing number of parents question the impact of COVID on kids and aren’t getting them vaccinated. Dr. Hotez says he’s hopeful this new report will change that.

The City of Seguin will have changes to its Trash Service beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four key changes are: Carts must be out by 6 a.m., all items must be in carts, there will now be quarterly bulky item pick-up, and you will need vouchers for extra bulk items.
