City considers name change for late county lawman
Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- The portion of the street in front of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office may soon get a new name. The city of Seguin is considering a request to rename the 2600 block of North Guadalupe Street to John Koch Drive.
The request is being made by retiring Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke and soon to be Sheriff-Elect Joshua Ray, who is running unopposed during the November General Election.
Sheriff Zwicke says Captain Koch died earlier this year. Zwicke says Koch was a fixture at the sheriff’s office for decades, which is why he thinks it’s appropriate to rename a small portion of the street in his honor.
“Take a second and think about February 1989
and then think about April of this year. That’s the time that John Koch spent serving the citizens of Guadalupe County -- not just the unincorporated areas but he would burn up a motor to cross that city limit in need of help for a city officer and all the cities in the county and they did the same for us,” said Zwicke.
Zwicke says it wasn’t just the time that Captain Koch spent on the street. It was how he went about serving this community for more than three decades.
“John is a friend that I had the opportunity to work with for over 31 years. He dedicated his life. He’s one of the last officers to work the midnight shift by himself. I had to do it a few times. I hated it but he never minded. Name, pg. 3
Final day to submit proposed names for the SHS baseball/softball complex
(Seguin) – The deadline to nominate all or part of Seguin High School’s new baseball and softball complex has officially arrived. The new complex is being built on the south end of the high school campus along College Street.
For the past month, the Seguin ISD has been accepting nominations for the 2023 voter approved project.
Emily Allen, Seguin ISD director of communications, says to be considered, all nominations must be submitted in person or via email by 4:30 p.m.
“You can send those in to our email. We have all the information on the Seguin ISD web page, and they must meet certain criteria. We have that information on there as well
Girl
and then those options that meet the correct criteria will be brought forth to the board for consideration as we prepare to open the baseball/softball complex,” said Allen.
According to the district, the
complex or parts of it may be named for any person, living or deceased, and will have to be officially approved by the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees. Complex, pg. 3
Scouts accepting pet supply collections
(Seguin) – Some local Girl Scouts are not only advocating for the needs of local dogs and cats. They are also serving as their voices as they await a new home at a local shelter.
Girl Scout Troop 4754 will be collecting pet supplies these next two days at Davila’s BBQ. The pet supplies will go to both Seguin Animal Services and the Guadalupe County Humane Society.
Troop Leader Denise Crettenden says the pet supply drive is part of helping the girls complete the “Junior Journey”
of the Girl Scouts by working together in solving community issues.
“Our troop is working toward their Bronze Award. That’s the highest award that you can earn up through fifth grade. So, they are finishing that up from their elementary years. This is the final project of that work, and they have to do their own community service project, and they have a love of animals and so they chose to do a pet supply drive for the Humane Society and for Seguin Animal Services. Scouts, pg. 3
Name, continued.
“That’s how far back in the history of Guadalupe County that John has gone and so it’s only fitting that we get to name this street in front of the sheriff’s office,” said Zwicke.
City Manager Steve Parker says there have been some concerns raised with the proposed name change. He says it’s unusual to change a small portion of a city street, and that’s one of the reasons why city and county officials wanted to have some additional conversations about the name change.
“I did reach out to the county and just to be transparent and honest, they do have some concerns with setting a precedent. So, they weren’t fully on board one way or another. They had made a request that possibly the city look into maybe an alternative where it would be like Highway 46 Edmund Kuempel Memorial Parkway – if there is a way to kind of have a dual naming kind of deal. I think they would be more in favor of that but ultimately, it’s up to the city council to make that decision. I don’t think the city has any heartburn one way or another,” said Parker.
It may be unusual, but these types of name changes have happened before, and that ultimately led to the council to reach a consensus to move forward with the name change. Councilman Jason Biesenbach says it’s an appropriate honor for someone who served this community for such a long time.
“I think it would be fitting to rename the street. You can kind of look over at Rosemary Drive. We renamed that after AJ Malone. Continental Drive and how many times has that been renamed for a business that takes over and this is a man that has dedicated his life and service to the community that he loved and so I think it would be fitting to rename the street in his honor,” said Biesenbach.
The city will now move forward with contacting the Post Office and Bexar Metro 911 officials about the next steps to officially approve the name change to John Koch Drive directly in front of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
Again, the district says each nomination should include a description of the “nominee’s contributions, why they are important and any pertinent history that should be considered.” Each nomination should also be no more than three pages long.
While she didn’t have the exact number of nominations, Allen says she can confirm that there has been plenty of interest.
“I know that there have been a number of potential options. Whether they meet the criteria or not, I couldn’t
Scouts, continued.
They are also making their own cat toys and dog toys to donate as well,” said Crettenden.
Providing some suggestions for those donations is Girl Scout Abigail Crettenden. Abigail says all types of supplies are needed and will definitely be put to good use.
“It’s about helping the animals. Toys for the cats, kitten food, cat food, canned food,
say for sure at this moment but yes, options have been sent into our email. So, we will be going through those obviously very very soon,” said Allen.
Staff, students, and the community may submit a nomination to sisd@ seguin.k12.tx.us. Nominations can also be dropped off in person at Seguin ISD Central Office located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.
Following today’s deadline, trustees will review nominations for consideration and then approve the new naming at a future school board meeting.
The official release of the complex to the district is planned for January.
dog food, bleach, cat litter, gloves, leashes, collars, dog toys and cat toys,” said Abigail.
Also encouraging the community to give big these next two days is Girl Scout Jocelynn Zeisloft.
“People need to donate because it could
help out shelters that don’t have much stuff for the animals and also, I do like animals and I feel like it’s very important,” said Zeisloft.
Pet supply donations will be accepted through the end of day on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Davila’s BBQ located at 418 W. Kingsbury St.
Those requesting that their donations be picked up are asked to call Crettenden at 210639-2157.
Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Matador offense explodes in 73-66 win over Boerne Champion
Chris Austin
(Boerne) -- Quarterback Corey Dailey had a career night as the Seguin Matadors totaled over 650 yards of offense in a 73-66 victory over Boerne Champion in the Hill Country on Friday night.
Dailey, Seguin’s junior signal caller, threw for seven touchdowns and ran in the final score with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter to provide the winning margin. Dailey would join the defense on the game’s final play as a Champion pass into the endzone was knocked away by the Matadors to end the game. Seguin is now 2-0 after the first two weeks of the District 13-5A season.
The Matadors and Chargers were in a track meet in the first half. Champion scored seven touchdowns in the game’s first 24 minutes, while the Matadors countered with five of their own and a 31-yard field goal from Gabe Hernandez. Champion kicker Nathan Bell drilled a 51-yard field as time expired in the second quarter to stake the Chargers to a 52-37 at halftime.
The Mats took the second half kickoff and wasted no time getting back on the scoreboard. Running back Ian Moreno capped a drive with a 26-yard TD rushing score to bring the Matadors within seven after a two-point conversion. Seguin would get the ball back after a defensive stop which included a key sack by Kyle Medrano, and Moreno would run in a score from 37 yards out to tie the game at 52 just over three minutes into the second half.
The Matador defense would get the ball back to their offense again and Seguin would take their first lead of the game at the 2:52 mark of the third quarter when Dailey found tight end Lane Seidenberger for a 10-yard score to put the Matadors in front 59-52. Champion would
get their first points in the half on a touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Navarrete to Zach Lopez from 14 yards away to tie the game at 59 just before the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Seguin receiver Nik Henry hauled in his third touchdown of the night on a 30-yard strike from Dailey to put the Matadors in front, 66-59. Champion would miss a field goal, but the Chargers got the ball back after a Seguin fumble and tied the game a play later when Navarrete hit William Burgess for a 33-yard score to tie the game at 66 with 3:15 left in the game. Seguin would drive down the field in the next two minutes and ended the drive with Dailey’s game-winning score.
Dailey finished the game 25 for 33 for 451 yards and seven touchdowns. Henry had eight catches for 134 yards and 3 TD’s. Jacob Burns led the Matadors in receiving yards with 165 yards on eight receptions and a touchdown. Ian Moreno topped 200 yards on the ground with 205 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.
Defensively, the Mats sacked Champion quarterbacks four times on the night. Rylan Rubio had two sacks and Jared Rogers and Kyle Medrano had a sack a piece.
With back-to-back wins to start district, Seguin is now 3-2 overall on the season. The Mats have won all three of their games this season after trailing at half time in each of their victories.
The Matadors will have a bye week next week and then return to District 13-5A action to host Pieper at Matador Stadium on October 11th. The Warriors are also 2-0 in district after slipping past Smithson Valley at home on Friday night, 39-36.

CDC: Suicide Levels Remain High
(Atlanta, GA) -- Suicide levels remain at about the highest level in history. CDC data reports nearly 50-thousand suicide deaths in 2023, but when investigations are concluded, that number could increase. Suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in all age groups in the U.S. in 2021 and 2022, and more prevalent among those aged 10 to 34. Firearm-related suicide was the leading means and only increased over time.
Ten
Listeria
Deaths Now Linked
To Boar’s Head Deli
Meat
(Sarasota, FL) -- There are now ten listeria deaths nationwide linked to Boar’s Head deli meat, including another death in New York. The CDC says there’ve now been two deaths in New York, also in South Carolina, in the listeria outbreak that caused Boar’s Head to shut down a meat processing plant in Virginia earlier this month. Six other people have died, one each in New Jersey, Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, New Mexico and Illinois. At least 59 people have been hospitalized with listeria in 19 states. The company, which recalled more than seven-million-pounds of deli meat this summer, is facing multiple lawsuits.
Americans Can Now Order Free At-Home COVID-19 Tests (Washington, DC) -- Americans are once again able to order free at-home COVID-19 tests. The federal government relaunched the program Thursday. Health officials said as Americans begin to move their gatherings indoors, “These tests will help keep families and their loved ones safe this fall and winter seasons.”
A

New research finds that nearsightedness has been on the rise, from 24 percent in 1990 to nearly 36 percent in 2023. It’s particularly increasing in Southeast Asian nations, but Japan is at the top of the list, with 86 percent of children reported to be nearsighted. Researchers recommend children spend more time engaged in physical activity and less time looking at screens. The findings were published this week in the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
