Connecting with Seguin families
Seguin to take a bite out of crime Elementary school pairs up with middle school for community block walk By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- A pair of neighboring schools recently hit the streets in hopes of connecting even more with their students outside of class. Teachers and employees at Rodriguez Elementary School and A.J. Briesemeister Middle School took part in a community block walk visiting homes and the families in their district. Teachers caravanned and then walked a perimeter of about five to six blocks in the neighborhoods that surround the campuses which are literally (Seguin) -- Get ready to take a bite neighbors on the city's west side. out of crime. was no doubt an eye opening experience for his teachers and credits Dr. Ben Grijalva, the principal at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School, for helping to inspire the partnership with his campus. He says Dr. Grijalva's previous work with family engagement in another district helped both principals initiate this idea -- an idea that also combats one of the Seguin ISD's strategic priorities of building partnerships with the community and its businesses.
She says it's all about just getting out and meeting those who live next door to you. See NIGHT OUT, page 2
"We came up with the idea of you know let's do a family block walk. Sometimes, it's hard for our parents to come to our campus so how about we go to their homes, let's go to the community -- also as a

"This annual event is to promote unity and build relationships with our community," said Brown. "We always encourage people to know their neighbors when you are away either out of town, at work, whatever it might be. Those people are going to be the ones that are going to keep an eye on your home and make sure that somebody is not over there that is not supposed to be . Even if it doesn't include the first responders on National Night Out, to just get out and meet your neighbors and know them so that they can contact you, exchange phone numbers so if something happens they can contact you." There will be over two dozen National Night Out parties happening in neighborhoods across the city.
Brown says the parties are always fun and officers just can't wait. "We did see an increase in parties this year so we are excited about that. We had 23 parties last year. We have 26 parties this year and we'd like to increase that number even more next year. All of our officers are on board and we have everybody who has signed up for a party so they should be seeing law enforcement and first responders tonight," said Brown. This year, the police department has added a food drive to the various gatherings. Brown says those attending a block party are encouraged to bring canned goods or non-perishable food items. She says police officers or firefighters at the event will be collecting the donations.
"So, that was something that Chief (Terry) Nichols wanted to add. He had toured a local food bank here, The Christian Cupboard, and he decided that we would do a fund drive next year although, I thought that we had enough time to get that message out to the community so that we could participate in that this year. So, I think this is going to be something that we do from here on out and go ahead and donate that food from our community to our local food pantry," said Brown. For those not attending a block party but who would still like to donate are asked to drop off their donations in the Seguin Police Department lobby. Donations will be accepted 24/7. Local apartments are also getting into the action. Those hosting their
own events include Eden Cross, the Seguin Housing Authority, Stratton Oaks, The Ranch, Walnut Grove Apartments and Seguin Manor. Like the city of Seguin, parts of Guadalupe County will also gather for National Night Out. The FM 1044 neighborhood will also continue its long standing tradition of observing National Night Out with a party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the barn located at Creekbottom Farm located at 4907 FM 1044. Neighbors from both sides of FM 1044 which includes Guadalupe County Precincts 1 and 4 are invited. Guests are asked to bring drinks and finger foods to share. First responders and other officials will be on hand for the event.
Elementary, middle school teachers take part in community block walks BLOCK WALK, continued from page 1 Grijalva says both campuses were excited about the results and can't wait to do it again. He says it was especially important for those teachers who don't live in Seguin and who might be unaware of the neighborhoods. As an administrator, he believes it's the start of a whole new way of ensuring that everyone is engaged with a student or with what is happening in their community school. "For me, that was a clear reflection and then as a

leader, it's pushing the boundaries for our staff so that we just don't stick to inviting parents to the campus but us inviting ourselves to the community is really pushing them to think beyond the campus," said Grijalva. Arriola says he plans to host neighborhood walks more regularly if not monthly. Grijalva says the plan is for Briesemeister to partner up with other elementary schools that are also in its same attendance zone. They include

Texas Lutheran dominates Southwestern 27-0 to move to 2-0 in ASC play Monroe (College Station/College Station) capped the TLU scoring night with a 16-yard run at the 12:39 mark of the fourth quarter.
(Seguin) - The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs dominated the Southwestern 27-0 Saturday night in Bulldog Stadium by forcing six turnovers and shutting out the Pirates for the first time in nine alltime meetings. Southwestern came into the American Southwest Conference match-up averaging 48.5 points per game. But TLU's defense held the Pirates scoreless, recovered all four of Southwestern's fumbles, and intercepted a pair of Pirate passes. The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 overall and to 2-0 in the ASC. TLU snapped a fourgame skid against the Pirates and shut out a squad that had scored 51 and 59 against TLU in the last two meetings. Southwestern fell to 2-1 overall and to 1-1 in the ASC. TLU senior cornerback Kedrick Ward (Missouri City/Elkins) started the TLU takeaway party and the Bulldog scoring with a fumble recovery that he returned 15 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.
After racking up 331 rushing yards against Sewanee and 347 yards against Louisiana College, Southwestern managed just 158 on the ground against TLU. The Pirates rushed the ball 55 times and averaged 2.9 yards per carry. Pirate quarterbacks also had little success against the TLU defense. Southwestern was 6-for-17 with two picks through the air. "This is what is expected of us," said Derek Dunn, TLU's senior linebacker. "Every day in practice, Coach Matt is hyping us about turnovers and pursuit to the ball. We run every day in practice, and we run hard." "Stuff like this, goose eggs are deserved and expected out of a good defense like this. We have been working day in and day out in the hot sun, long hours, for games like this. Honestly, Southwestern is a great team. Hats off to them, but game's like this are expected from us." Dunn collected 11 total tackles, had two sacks for 18 yards, and registered five tackles for loss that resulted in 24 yards lost by the Pirates.
"Our defense, they played with a lot of heart and a lot of pride," said Carl Gustafson, TLU's thirdyear head coach. "This is a big game because it was the next game, a conference game, but all week you could tell that there was a laser focus on the defensive side of the ball." "I'm really proud of all of our players. The defense really set a tone. I'm proud of our defensive coaches, led by (Defensive Coordinator) Ricky Matt, who came up with a great plan that our guys went out and executed. We got a lot of turnovers." The Bulldogs turned the first two Southwestern fumbles into touchdowns. After Ward's fumble recovery, on an errant pitch on an option play, Bulldog defensive lineman Sam Guzman (Buda/Hays) forced a fumble in the second quarter that Ward recovered near midfield. Set up at the Southwestern 48, TLU sophomore quarterback Wade Freeman (Richmond/Bush), directed a seven-play drive that ended with a 10-

In the third quarter, following Southwestern drives that included a lost fumble and a punt, the Bulldogs drove 75 yards in six plays to take a 20-0 lead. Freeman scored again, this time on a 12-yard run. On the scoring drive, Freeman hit CJ Romero (Odem/Odem) for 50 yards on 3rd-and-2 from the TLU 33 to put the Bulldogs into the red zone. Freeman scored three plays later on 3rd-and-5 from the 12.

"We made some adjustments in the locker room after the half," said Freeman. "In the booth, they saw some things that would allow us to get around the Southwestern defense, different formations and things like that. We adjusted, and it helped us in the second half." Freeman finished the night with a career-best 117 yards rushing on 19 carries with the two rushing touchdowns. He also completed six of his 10 passes for 91 yards and no interceptions. TLU rushed 48 times for 196 yards and had three rushing touchdowns. Christopher

Freshman strong safety Daniel Enriquez tallied six tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, two pass breakups, and a blocked field goal. Keyshawn Holman led TLU with 13 total tackles. wooded and you will have broken limbs every time the wind blows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center had an interesting hackberry pro and con article on their website. Two experts debated the merits of the hackberry. The tree is very tolerant of growing conditions and has a large native range. It is important for wildlife because the berries are eaten by birds and its leaves are the larval food of butterflies and moths. On the other hand, they have heavy infestations of mistletoe, every seed sprouts and you will find them in all your beds, and falling limbs and trees cause constant clean up. (I can agree with this. I have spent much money the last couple of years having broken trees cut down and removed.)
Q: How do I tell the difference between soapberry trees and chinaberry trees? I have one or the other on my property and can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t want chinaberry because they Q: I would like to plant some ornamental grasses in my landare so invasive. scape. What do you suggest? A: The monthly e-newsletter from Texasinvasives.org had a nice article on the chinaberry tree in August. It gave a way to tell the difference between the two trees when they both have fruit. Chinaberry fruit remains opaque during the winter. Soapberry fruit are translucent. During the growing season, chinaberry leaves have a lacy look and a musky odor with lavender flowers in the spring. Soapberry flowers are cream colored. Chinaberry are certainly invasive and are found in many of our Seguin parks. The tree was introduced in the middle 1800s from Asia. The Texas Department of Agriculture will not let the tree be sold, distributed or imported.
Q: My hackberry trees are starting to split and fall. How old do they get in this area? A: I found one source that said 20 to 30 years. However, remember that they are weak
A: My very favorite grass, particularly this time of year, is Gulf or coastal muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) which is a Texas native plant. It is a short grass, one and a half to two feet tall, and has pink fuzzy seed heads in the fall. It is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines through it. I check my plants and the ones in the Park West pollinator garden frequently to see if they are in bloom yet. Another favorite grass, also a Texas native, is inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grows to two feet and has ornamental seed heads during the summer and fall. The foliage sort of looks like very small bamboo, but doesn’t have that nasty bamboo-like habit of taking over the world. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
