National Night Out Locals ready to party!

Learning how to fight crime will definitely be a fun time tonight at the Seguin Manor Apartments. The apartment complex will be hosting a foam party for this year’s National Night Out event. Neighbors will also get to enjoy DJ music and free food from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The apartment complex is one of 20 National Night Out registered sites with the Seguin Police Department. The complex invites anyone in the community to come out and learn more about keeping our neighborhoods safe.

Seguin joins nation in fighting crime

National Night Out events slated across the community

(Seguin) – Neighborhoods will come to life during today’s National Night Out events. National Night Out is an annual communitybuilding campaign that promotes policecommunity partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. Locally and throughout Guadalupe County, neighbors will gather for parties, games, potlucks, and other fun activities designed to help raise awareness on safety, protection, and crime fighting.

Whether it’s a neighborhood, a street, a county road, a business, or an apartment complex, residents have come together in various ways to

shed light on crime-fighting tools.

Ensuring that residents don’t lose an opportunity to participate in a National Night Out Party is Barnes Middle School.

Barnes administrators say instead of letting tonight’s home football game interfere with National Night Out; they thought they’d bring the two together. With a host of apartments and neighborhoods surrounding the school, they felt it was the perfect location not only for some football

but also for some music, concessions, and free hot dogs while supplies last. The event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

The Seguin Police Department says Barnes is one of 20 registered National Night Out sites that it will visit tonight. Both Seguin PD and Seguin Fire Department officials will make rounds to each registered event. Again, officials say folks who didn’t register but who still want to get out and meet their neighbors or who want to throw a lastminute gathering or party tonight are more than welcome. They say there’s nothing formal or official that needs to happen.

National Night Out has been an annual event across the country since 1984.

Those with specific questions are asked to contact Stephanie Larrimore, the Seguin PD’s community engagement officer at 830-865-6409.

Candidates Forum set for this Wednesday

(Seguin) -- With election season in full swing and the date to cast your ballot close at hand, there’s never been a better time to get informed about candidates and issues. That’s according to Tracy Donley, TLU director of communications and content marketing.

Donley says the public this

Wednesday night is invited to a Candidates’ Forum being hosted by Texas Lutheran University’s Center for Servant Leadership, the TLU MOVE Texas Student Club, and the Community Forum.

The non-partisan event will include a slate of city, county, and state candidates. Candidates will introduce themselves and briefly

share their platforms.

Eddie Davila Jr. will serve as the moderator of the forum. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and register to vote if they’re not already registered.

The event is free and begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in TLU’s Wupperman Little Theatre.

Pets, home lost during outdoor burning

(Guadalupe County) -- Pets as many as six dogs were reportedly lost in a house fire Friday.

Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator, and fire marshal says along with the pets, the home located in the 400 block of Vivroux Ranch Road was a total loss after a fire in a burn barrel got out of control.

Pinder says the resident reportedly was burning trash in the barrel that “had holes” at the bottom. He says reports indicate that when the resident went inside to get a drink, they came back to find that the grass around the barrel had caught fire.

He says there was also no running water on the property, making it a challenge to initiate any attempt at extinguishing the fire. Pinder says flames quickly traveled to the porch — eventually traveling through the house and spreading into the heavy brush around the home.

Fire officials continue to assist in determining exactly how many pets were lost in the fire. The American Red Cross was also called into help the displaced resident.

Guadalupe County to consider outdoor burn ban

(Seguin) – Dry conditions and the lack of rain will have county officials again reevaluating whether it’s time to implement the outdoor burn ban in the unincorporated areas of the county. A request today to initiate an outdoor burn ban will come before the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. At the beginning of September, the court delayed action despite a recommendation from Patrick Pinder, county emergency management coordinator and fire marshal.

At the time, Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher believed that the rain that was forecast would allow them the opportunity to hold off for a bit.

Just this past weekend, hazards of outdoor burning reportedly caused a local resident to lose their home and several pets in the 400 block of Vivroux Ranch Road.

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court meeting gets underway at 10 a.m. in the Guadalupe County Courthouse.

It’s official, Academy announced as new sports store coming to Seguin

(Seguin) -- The public can now add Academy Sports & Outdoors to the list of new businesses coming to Seguin.

According to project filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations (TDLR), Academy is building a nearly 63,000-squarefoot store that will be located in the 1300 block of IH 10E.

The new Academy is part of the new Seguin Crossing shopping center. The new retail center will also include some other well-

known stores, like Hobby Lobby, James Avery, and Five Below. The new retail center will be built on land just east of the Starbucks store near IH 10 and SH 123.

These are just a few of the new retail developments in Seguin's pipeline. Other stores also slated to come to Seguin include O’Reilly Auto Parts on State Highway 46; Chick-fil-A I-H 10 Frontage Road (next to Bill Miller’s BBQ) and Kentucky Fried Chicken also on State Highway 46.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion

Bulldogs Shut Out Schreiner, 2-0, to Close Non-Conference Play

SEGUIN, Texas -- A second half goal from freshman Lilly Noblett (San Antonio/Warren) helped Texas Lutheran top Schreiner, 2-0, Sunday at Gustafson Field.

TLU moves to 4-3-1 with the win, while Schreiner drops to 1-5-1. The 4-3-1 (.563) mark is the best non-conference finish thus far in the Kerwin Johnson era of TLU women’s soccer with three of their eight matches coming against regionally ranked opponents.

The Bulldogs led the shot count, 16-3, including a dominant 7-1 outing in the first half, and held the Mountaineers without a corner kick while earning eight of their own. Texas Lutheran would maintain possession for nearly 70 percent of the match. Callie Brame (San Antonio/Churchill) led the Bulldogs with five shots.

The game did not remain tied long as a Schreiner own goal 45 seconds into the match gave the Bulldogs a near immediate 1-0 lead which the Bulldogs would maintain through halftime.

Texas Lutheran would double their lead with a 57th minute goal from Noblett that came via assists from Brame and Ariana Gomez

(San Antonio/Randolph). TLU limited Schreiner to just two shots in the second half and none of the Mountaineers three shots were on target.

All three of the Bulldogs goalkeepers: Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop), Skylar LeBlanc (League City/Clear Falls), and Charleigh Phipps (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) saw action on Sunday with Marquez picking up the win in-goal.

Up next, the Bulldogs will open SCAC play on Friday, Oct. 4, on the road as they travel to Irving to face University of Dallas at 7 PM. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs. com.

Senator Richard Blumenthal and New Haven Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro have made the request in a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice. It reads that large corporations cannot be allowed to get away with endangering public health. The CDC has confirmed ten listeria deaths linked to Boar’s Head deli meat with 59 people hospitalized.

NY Researcher Believes He’s Unlocked Simple Treatment For Early Alzheimer’s Disease (White Plains, NY) -- A New York researcher believes he’s unlocked a simple treatment for early Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a special formulation of synthetic-made thiamine or vitamin B1. Dr. Gary Gibson says a pilot study he’s conducted at The Burke Neurological Institute in White Plains shows that if you increase thiamine intake to very high levels the brain can improve to somewhat normal. But he cautions against running to buy vitamin B1 for this purpose since it’s not the same thing as what he’s formulated in the lab. The next step involves a multicenter early Alzheimer’s study involving 50 sites across the nation.
