City, company breaks ground on $64 million project CSP bringing 200 new jobs to Seguin Zaffarini says that this is a great day for Seguin.
By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- A $64 million project that will bring 200 new jobs to Seguin is now officially under construction. State and local leaders were on hand Tuesday for the groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the new Continental Structural Plastics (CSP) plant. CSP's CEO Steve Rooney says they are thrilled to be building their first facility in Texas. "This facility is being built to address anticipated future demand for our automotive and heavy truck products. We feel we are very well strategically located to support our key customers going forward. We along with our parent company Teijin are investing at least $65 million to build this 200,000 square foot facility including all the internal program capital required and manufactured products. For employment, we'll have as many as 200 people here both in engineering and manufacturing organizations creating world class advance and positive components," said Rooney. State Senator Judith Zaffarini, who represents Seguin and Guadalupe County, addressed the crowd on Tuesday morning.
"This beautiful dynamic city so close to so many other parts of Texas including my hometown of Laredo, Texas but a place where there is definitely skilled workforce. A place where there is so many educational opportunities including Texas Lutheran University and a place where there are so many people who unite for the better good. We believe that Seguin is the perfect place for those reasons and more but we are especially proud to welcome a good neighbor, a new company in town who has a reputation and a record of more than 50 years for having committed to corporate responsibility, for being committed to environmental protection and certainly committed to having well paying jobs and for this, we are so appreciative," said Zaffirini. The state was a key part of making this project happen. State Representative John Kuempel, of Seguin, says everyone involved worked hard to make this a reality, and now the city of Seguin and the state of Texas both will benefit from this major investment. "What a proud and exciting day it is to the city of Seguin, Guadalupe County. We

thank ya'll for what ya'll have done, CSP, choosing this facility knowing that this community will come together and work with you as a partner going forward. As we grow, we need these jobs and we appreciate everything ya'll have done," said Kuempel. Josh Schneuker, the executive director of the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), was the local driving force behind the project. Schneuker says they spent approximately 11 months working with CSP and the state. He says the collaboration on this project really made a difference. "I can't stress enough how important collaboration is and how important working as a team is because we can not have landed this project in the state of Texas and in the city of Seguin without working together and the support of not only my staff by our board of directors, city council, the Guadalupe County Commissioners, the state of Texas, Senator Zaffarini, your office, Representative Kuempel, your office -- everybody played such an instru- State Senator Judith Zaffarini was on hand for Tuesday's mental role in helping recruit this project groundbreaking ceremony for the new Continental Structural Plastics Plant to Seguin. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- This year's Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo Committee is announcing not one but two major concert headliners. Sarah Louque, the event coordinator for this year's fair, says Musicians Bart Crow and Chris Colston will both be taking the stage during this year's fair scheduled for Oct. 10-13 at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Crow has been climbing and staying on top of the Texas Music Chart for songs such as "Wear My Ring," "Dandelion and most recently for "Wheels." Crow has also been featured by Country Weekly, on CMT and was also named to Rolling Stones "10 New Country Artists You Need to
Know." Chris Colston has also taken over the Texas/Red Dirt scene with songs such as "Gone," "Bonnie and Clyde" and "Long Way Around." Colston describes his sound and style as "gritty Texas roots combined with a little blues and rock n' roll." Louque says this year's fair committee couldn't be more thrilled about the entertainment schedule which is all free with paid admission into the fair. "On Thursday night (Oct. 10), we have Rio Band. Friday night (Oct. 11), we have an opener of Brandon Michael and then we have headliner Chris Colston and then on Saturday night (Oct. 12), we have an opener of Rumor Town featuring Jay Eric and headliner of Bart Crow. This is the first time that the Guadalupe
County Fair has had big names come to the fair in almost 10 years so for Seguin, this is pretty big news," said Louque. As a bonus, Louque says the fair committee will also be offering VIP seating for Saturday's night concert featuring Bart Crow. "If you want a VIP for Bart Crow, you can come by our fair office at 41005 N. Camp and pick those up from me or you can go on our fair website at gcfair.org and there's a big flashy button that says get your fair tickets here and you are able to buy those tickets online. You can also call our fair office at 830-379-6477 and speak with me and make arrangements to help you get those tickets picked up. There's four different VIP packages available for that. They start at $250 and they go all the way up to $700 depending on which
package you want. Some of them are just packages that will get you in the dance area or some of them will have rodeo tickets included in them also," said Louque. The free dances and concerts throughout the fair will be held in the Dance Pavilion. The schedule again features Rio on Thursday from 8:30 p.m. to midnight; Brandon Michael and Chris Colston on Friday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Rumor-Town, featuring Jay Eric followed by Bart Crow on Saturday from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Again, VIP seating plus tickets to this year's PRCA rodeo are also now available online at gcfair.org. Fair organizers say limited VIP seating is available.

wooded and you will have broken limbs every time the wind blows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center had an interesting hackberry pro and con article on their website. Two experts debated the merits of the hackberry. The tree is very tolerant of growing conditions and has a large native range. It is important for wildlife because the berries are eaten by birds and its leaves are the larval food of butterflies and moths. On the other hand, they have heavy infestations of mistletoe, every seed sprouts and you will find them in all your beds, and falling limbs and trees cause constant clean up. (I can agree with this. I have spent much money the last couple of years having broken trees cut down and removed.)
Q: How do I tell the difference between soapberry trees and chinaberry trees? I have one or the other on my property and can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t want chinaberry because they Q: I would like to plant some ornamental grasses in my landare so invasive. scape. What do you suggest? A: The monthly e-newsletter from Texasinvasives.org had a nice article on the chinaberry tree in August. It gave a way to tell the difference between the two trees when they both have fruit. Chinaberry fruit remains opaque during the winter. Soapberry fruit are translucent. During the growing season, chinaberry leaves have a lacy look and a musky odor with lavender flowers in the spring. Soapberry flowers are cream colored. Chinaberry are certainly invasive and are found in many of our Seguin parks. The tree was introduced in the middle 1800s from Asia. The Texas Department of Agriculture will not let the tree be sold, distributed or imported.
Q: My hackberry trees are starting to split and fall. How old do they get in this area? A: I found one source that said 20 to 30 years. However, remember that they are weak
A: My very favorite grass, particularly this time of year, is Gulf or coastal muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) which is a Texas native plant. It is a short grass, one and a half to two feet tall, and has pink fuzzy seed heads in the fall. It is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines through it. I check my plants and the ones in the Park West pollinator garden frequently to see if they are in bloom yet. Another favorite grass, also a Texas native, is inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grows to two feet and has ornamental seed heads during the summer and fall. The foliage sort of looks like very small bamboo, but doesn’t have that nasty bamboo-like habit of taking over the world. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
