Cindy Aguirre-Herrera Introducing Flora, the latest squirrel to be unveiled as part of the city of Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program. See story on page 2.

Seguin welcomes Squirrel No. 5

(Seguin) – Don’t forget to say ‘hi’ to Flora the next time you head down to the newly expanded bike and hike trail just south of the Seguin Public Library.

Flora is the fifth and newest Squirrel to be unveiled as part of the city of Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program. One by one, the larger-than-life concrete squirrel structures are being installed at various locations around town.

Community members and businesses have been sponsoring the squirrels and then hand selecting their favorite artist to paint them.

Those sponsoring Flora is former Seguin Mayor Don Keil and wife Marty.

Don says the couple didn’t have to think twice about signing up for the program.

“Marty and I said, ‘we are going to do that.’ So, I think we were probably the first five people to do this because it is such a unique idea and we’ve seen it with great success at a lot of towns around in Texas with their famous icons and what more famous icon would be than the squirrel and also, we thought this would be the perfect place in this park. We thought there would be some great natural Texas amenities to this and nothing is more Texas than the bluebonnet and nobody can portray bluebonnets

than our world-famous artist Kitty Keller. So, we got her to do this for us and she did a wonderful job,” said Keil. Marty also agreed that Artist Kitty Keller was the best person for the job. She says Flora turned out happy, colorful, and bright.

“First of all, Kitty, we have a relationship that goes back over 40 years and so when I thought of an artist for this, I thought it has to be Kitty because she came out with that original artwork of the wildflowers that a lot of people don’t know about because we have so many new people in Seguin now. But those of us who have been around will remember it so well and how popular it was. Also, as a member of the Arts Commission when this was going on -- I’m no longer on the board -- but when I was, I thought all of the opportunities that it brings to Seguin – squirrel hunts, scavenger hunts, a squirrel trail, all kinds of artwork that can be sold with Seguin’s name on it internationally and nationally to bring people to our town,” said Marty.

Now although it took her a little longer to complete, Keller is thankful for the opportunity and hopes it brings enjoyment to others.

Squirrel, continued.

“I’ve been known for painting these wildflowers for over 36 years. I’ve been in business for that long and I started with the wildflower painting on t-shirts so it’s something I enjoy doing. In a way, I’m kind of known for that and so I thought it was probably the best thing to put on the squirrel for me and I think it turned out bright

and colorful and it’s a happy squirrel and I was grateful for the Keils’ to have asked me to do it. They were very patient. Ten months later, I finally got finished,” said Keller.

With the completion of the fifth squirrel, Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says 15 more remain on the list and are currently in the works. The opportunity to sponsor a squirrel is still available.

The cost is $2,500 per squirrel. Each sponsor is also responsible for the cost of the artist.

Those interested in participating in the program are asked to contact the Seguin Main Street Program at 830-401-2448.

Other squirrel locations include the Seguin Public Library, Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, Schertz Bank & Trust and Seguin’s Central Park.

Late Field Goal Lifts Sul Ross Past TLU, 37-34

ALPINE, Texas -- After trailing 31-10 at halftime, the Bulldogs rallied to score 27 second half points but fell to the Sul Ross State Lobos on the final play when the Lobos kicker Carlos Arreola booted a 38-yard field goal to sink the Bulldogs in Alpine.

This is the second consecutive heartbreaking loss for the Bulldogs in Alpine as the Bulldogs fell on the last play in 2021’s 12-10 loss at Jackson Field.

Down by as many as 24 points, the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-0 ASC) battled back to tie the game 34-all behind a 24-point fourth quarter led by quarterback Caden Boasanko (San Antonio/East Central).

The backfield duo of Jacob Forton (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) and DaKory Willis (Flatonia/Flatonia) combined for 164 yards on the ground with both finding the end zone. Willis would also add a team-high 52 yards receiving. Forton scored the Bulldogs first touchdown of the night on a three-yard rush while Willis’ came on a 16-yard dash in the fourth quarter. To cap a 24-point fourth quarter,

Bosanko connected with Joshua Muncrief (Edna/ Edna) on a 21-yard connection and Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen) for the two-point conversion with 49 seconds remaining.

Seth Cosme (Angleton/Angleton) led TLU with 149 yards through the air on 12-of-27 passing and added 27 yards on the ground while throwing four interceptions on the night. Caden Bosanko would enter in the fourth and finish 1-of3 for 21 yards passing while rushing for 39 yards and a touchdown. Tristan Smith (New Braunfels/ Canyon) led the defense with seven total tackles (all solo). Christian Monroe (College Station/ College Station) had four tackles including a teamhigh two tackles for loss. Jermario Thomas (Jasper/ Jasper) - who entered Saturday second in NCAA Division-III in interceptions - recorded his fourth interception of the season in addition to two tackles. Joaquin Rodriguez (San Antonio/Smithson Valley) was perfect - making a 33-yard field goal and his lone extra point attempt.

The hosts jumped out to a 21-0 lead, aided by a first quarter pick six, before Forton found the end zone midway through the second quarter. Sul Ross stretched their lead to as much as 34-10 in the third quarter before the Bulldog defense would hold the Lobos scoreless until their final game-winning drive.

Texas Lutheran returns to Seguin on Saturday, October 7th, when the Bulldogs welcome No. 22 Mary Hardin-Baylor to Bulldog Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 1 PM kickoff and will be broadcast on TLU’s YouTube Channel, TLU+, along with KWED 1580 AM. All streaming and stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.

Rep. Malliotakis Supports Stopgap Measure for Shutdown

(New York, NY) -- Staten Island GOP Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis is supporting Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s stopgap measure to prevent a government shutdown. She is backing the plan that will continue funding the government at reduced levels until October 31st and implement the border security provisions she has been advocating for, which she says most Americans support. Malliotakis has continued to express her frustration over the flood of migrants into New York City, and says because it’s a sanctuary city the NYPD is not allowed to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests. She points to numerous crimes committed at the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown which is the migrant intake center.

Study: Cannabis Overuse Linked To Heart Failure, Heart Attacks

(Undated) -- Adults who overuse cannabis are much more likely to have serious heart problems. Researchers in Canada found that those who heavily use weed are 60-percent more likely to experience heart failure, strokes or heart attacks. The study published Thursday in the journal Addiction compared nearly 30-thousand adults with a condition known as cannabis use disorder, or CUD, to the same number with no CUD exposure. CUD is described as continued use of weed despite significant effects on a person’s life and health. It impacts around 27 to 34-percent of people who use cannabis.

(Undated) -- A new study shows what types of food to eat and avoid in order to prevent or lessen weight gain for middle-aged people. The study published in “The BMJ” shows there was less weight gain in people who ate whole grains, fruit and non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, carrots and spinach. These people avoided sugary drinks and starchy vegetables such as peas, corn and potatoes. Researchers studied more than two decades of data from almost 137-thousand people.
