The first of October brings changes for the city of Seguin

(Seguin) -- This start of October brings with it some major changes in the city of Seguin.

First, the Starcke Park Golf Course officially closed on Tuesday, Oct. 1 and it will stay that way for the next year. The course is being given a total makeover and will essentially be a brand-new golf course once it’s done. The course is expected to reopen in October of 2025.

The first day of the month also marked some changes for garbage customers in the city of Seguin.

Mayor Donna Dodgen says the bulk trash pickup schedule has also officially changed.

“Residents will be limited to two bulky items that we pick up on trash days once a quarter. Visit www.seguintexas.gov/ yourcityservices for quarterly schedules and for information about other changes to trash service go online to seguintexas. gov,” said Dodgen.

City officials say the changes in trash pickup were done to keep the trash rate low for residents in the city of Seguin.

SHS resurrects FCA chapter

All students invited to tonight’s Be the Light event

(Seguin) – There’s a new driving force to help further the positive influence that coaches, athletes and all students can have not only in the world but among themselves.

Seguin High School is introducing the return of an FCA chapter to its campus. Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a nationally recognized organization, is the latest beacon of faith to assimilate throughout the local high school campus.

Among those helping to facilitate the new chapter is Ashley Farris, Seguin ISD assistant athletic director.

“What we are trying to do here through FCA is just empower coaches,

athletes, all students and community members to unite and inspire and just go out and change the world through the Gospel and the Word of the Lord. We just kicked it off I’d say about a month and a half ago with what we call our FCA Huddles which is what we do every week Thursday mornings and basically what we do there is have a devotional that it either given by a student here or we bring in guest speakers. But once a month, the very first Wednesday of each month, we are doing off campus events. The first one was at the Ski Lodge for the month of September and that was a great event. FCA, pg. 3

Burn ban now in effect in Guadalupe County

(Seguin) – An order for an outdoor burn ban is officially in place for the unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County. The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court on Tuesday unanimously voted to implement the burn ban.

October 9th • 7PM

Jackson Auditorium

Keynote Speaker: Felicia Wu Song, author of Restless Devices, will be discussing how our devices are affecting our wellness. This event is free and open to all.

Proposing the item to the court was Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal. Pinder says things are just too dangerous to allow continued burning.

“Currently looking at the KBDI (Keetch-Byram Drought Index) in Guadalupe County, we are at 637. The last time, I brought this to the court, we were at about the mid-500s so we had a significant increase since the last time I came to the court. Looking at some of the counties around us, Bexar is at 587, Caldwell is at 641, Comal

is at 647, Hays is at 619, Gonzales is 626 and Wilson is 613. Out of those counties, four of them are in a burn ban,” said Pinder.

Despite some isolated storms forecasted for this weekend, Pinder says he doesn’t believe they will be enough to bring some relief to the area.

“So, we have seen a lot of illegal burns right now. We are seeing a significant increase in grassfires. Actually, one of the homes, Commissioner, over the weekend was started from a burn barrel outside and spread to their home and burned their home down but we are seeing that the burns that are unattended burns – the ground is just dry. We have seen a couple of roadside fires up on the Interstate but that is the common

denominator currently. People are just burning because they have brush. With the burn ban, this does not limit agriculture burns. I spoke to Commissioner Germann today about a person in his precinct that is doing some land clearing and things like that – just anybody that will want to burn needs to submit a permit. You can burn in a burn barrel with a cover. That is an approved source through here. You don’t have to get a permit for that but if your burn barrel does cause a fire or spreads, you will be cited for that. So, that’s reckless,” said Pinder. The burn ban which is now in effect will continue through Dec. 31. Those having questions about the order are asked to contact the Guadalupe County Emergency Management office at 830-303-8856.

Family displaced after weekend fire

(Seguin) -- A local family is homeless today after a fire ripped through their home Saturday afternoon.

Bryce Houlton, Guadalupe County assistant emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says the fire call on Tschoepe Road came into dispatch just before 3 p.m.

“It was a mobile home, and it was a total loss. That was in the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department District, and we had the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue, Kingsbury, Lake Dunlap, McQueeney and York Creek Volunteer Fire Departments responded to that one and they were able to get that fire under control pretty quickly. That fire is actually still under investigation at this time,” said Houlton.

FCA, continued.

We had over 140 people there and then this one is going to at our Outdoor Learning Center,” said Farris. Farris says although the work to bring back the group started in the spring, the importance of having such a group for all students was realized over the summer.

“We, of course, open it up to our entire student body. All of our staff members are invited each week to these ‘huddles.’ To me, personally, when I got to Seguin, and just walking the halls and getting to know the athletic department and the students, I thought that there was a big thing missing and FCA has not been here since 2016 and it was just on my heart that I think this was a big piece and then, of course, when we lost our fallen senior Chloe Belicek in July, that was kind of like, ‘okay, this is exactly what we need right now.’ We have to get this started. We had so many kids and so many community members hurting from her death, and we just really needed to put our focus on God and know that his plan is the right plan and so, there was no better time to do it, so we got it started,” said Farris.

Farris says the organization’s introduction to the district continues tonight during the Be the Light FCA Event being planned at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center.

“It’s absolutely free. We feed the students. Obviously, we are not

Houlton says luckily the homeowners were able to escape. Their home, however, was a total loss.

“Everybody was able to get out. Nobody was injured. Actually, the homeowner did lose everything, and the Red Cross was able to provide them with assistance,” said Houlton.

As reported earlier by KWED, another local resident is also homeless after losing control of an outdoor burn. That fire destroyed not only the home but also claimed several pets. The fire was reported Friday in the 400 block of Vivroux Ranch Road.

Houlton says a number of grass and vehicle fires throughout the weekend also kept fire departments in the area pretty busy.

providing enough food for the adults but most certainly, the students will get to eat hotdogs and chili and of course, we have Pastor Chris Larson coming to speak to us which we are super excited about. I don’t know if you have heard him speak but your soul will definitely be set on fire for the Lord after you listen to that man talk. So, we are really happy for him coming out and giving up his time with his family to come speak with our students and our community members,” said Farris.

Also, on tap tonight will be music by Madelyn Abrameit plus fun games and raffle prizes. Although the event is free, students will be collecting donations for the residents at the Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Those attending tonight are encouraged to bring a pair of socks, blankets or cardigans to be donated

to those residents.

Farris says the group is relying heavily on the outside community to help host these off-site FCA events and encourages those who wish to be a part of the effort to contact the Seguin ISD Athletic Department.

“Really, the work behind the scenes comes from our community members, a bunch of our parents have set this up in order for this to happen for the ones off campus. It takes a lot of people volunteering time and money for food. We have live music. We have guest speakers so it’s just really helpful when we have the support of community and the support of our parents to really help set all these events up,” said Farris.

The Be the Light event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SOLC. The SOLC is located at 1865 E. Highway 90.
