Man killed by train

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A Seguin man was struck and killed by a train Tuesday night. Seguin Police say the victim has been identified as Daniel Levario, 49. Officers say the accident was reported just before 10 p.m. at the railroad tracks at North Austin and New Braunfels Streets. Preliminary investigation revealed that Levario had attempted to cross the railroad tracks at an unimproved crossing when he was struck by the Union Pacific train. Levario was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Darrell Hunter. Union Pacific Police was contacted and responded to the scene to assist the Seguin Police Department with the investigation.

The Seguin PD is reminding the community that trespassing on railroad property is a violation of the law, specifically, Texas Penal Code 28.07 Interference with Railroad Property. A person commits an offense if the person throws an object or discharges a firearm or weapon at a train or rail-mounted work equipment without the effective consent of the owner. It's also against the law to enter or remain on railroad property, knowing that it is railroad property as well as placing an obstruction on a railroad track or right-of-way or causes in any manner the derailment of a train, railroad car, or other railroad property that moves on tracks. Such offenses can be a Class C or Class B misdemeanor unless the person causes bodily injury to another, in which event, the offense is a felony of the third degree.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M

By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- It's homecoming week for Seguin High School. The weeklong celebration continues tonight with the annual SHS Parade and Community Pep Rally. Student Council Sponsor Derek Vera says this tonight's event will be even more special as this will be the last time a homecoming celebration will be held in the current Matador Stadium. There are a few things that are a little bit different like having the visitor's side not be there but it's just a little thing that we have to work around but we have something planned for tonight and it's going to be a really fun time," said Vera. Despite the undergoing changes at the stadium, Vera says all homecoming traditions will continue as they have for many years. "The parade will kick-off at 6:30. We will travel around College Street, Lamar all the way back around. We have football, volleyball, girls bas-

ketball, soccer, ROTC -- a whole line-up of people are going to be out there and especially a bunch of groups you don't get to hear very much from. We are going to go around the high school for a little bit, come back up and that's going to lead directly into the community pep rally. Now, we invite everyone to come on out because it really is going to be a good time and then starting at 7 o'clock, we'll get (started with) all the festivities. We'll have ROTC come out and do the national anthem and we'll have Mini Mats and the band will be out there as well," said Vera. As Vera mentioned, this year's group of Mini Mats will also be performing at tonight's pep rally. This year's event recorded one of the largest groups ever. Approximately 130 young girls took part in Tuesday's Mini Mats Clinic hosted by the SHS Cheer Team. The homecoming parade, again, gets underway today at 6:30 p.m. The route, which will begin at the softball

fields, will turn onto Lamar, then onto Cedar Street arriving at Matador Stadium. Vera says homecoming festivities will also continue on Friday. He says this year, students decided to add something new. "For the first time ever, right before the game, we are going to have the homecoming carnival and tailgate where we are actually going to have a bunch of the clubs from around Seguin High School set up some games and things to do before the football game. All that starts at 5:30 p.m. As we go from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. right before the game, next to the football field and the soccer field, it's going to be free to enter -- just some cool things to come and do right before the big game," said Vera. Friday's football game has the Seguin Matadors taking on Austin Crockett. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. at Matador Stadium. The game can be heard live on Seguin Radio KWED or at SeguinToday.com. Pre-game begins at 6:30 p.m.

A home on the move

This historic house in downtown Seguin is on its way to finding a new home. The house, built in 1908, was located across the street from the Silver Center on East Court Street. It had not served as a home for ome time. Instead, it has been used as a commercial property -- housing everything from an insurance office, to a barber shop, to a recording studio. The house's new location will allow it to become someone's home again. The family that purchased the home is moving it to the Kingsbury area, and it's expected to be completely restored. In preparation for the transport, the house movers removed the roof of the home, cut it in half, and loaded it onto two trailers. Half of the house moved on Wednesday, with the second-half slated to be moved to Kingsbury sometime today. The downtown property will now be used to create additional parking for a doctor's office on Court Street. Courtesy photo

Pumpkin patch springs up on lawn of local church PUMPKINS, continued from page 1 That's because this year marks the 25th year anniversary for the FUMC Pumpkin Patch. A total of 3,000 pumpkins of varying shapes and sizes and even colors have returned to the lawn of the local church located on North Austin Street. Coordinating this year's 25th annual pumpkin crop are Co-Chairs Barbara Vinson and Bill Hughson. Vinson says for many residents, a trip to the pumpkin patch at FUMC has become a long standing tradition -- welcoming visitors from all over and all for a good cause. "As you walk up to the pumpkin patch, you will be met by the Scarecrow and it says 'Happy 25th Year' and we have people that come in and go 'gosh, I went when I was a child and I just loved it and have pictures and memories and now, I'm bringing my child to have the same memories and of course, people can buy a pumpkin anywhere, a grocery store, anywhere else and are ours maybe a little more? 'Yes' but we get ours from a (Native) Indian reservation and it is a win-win situation because they

bring the pumpkins. They tell us the price. We set the price and the more we sell, the more percentage we get and the more they get and we have 20 different missions that we have chosen that we think are valuable to the community and so when a volunteer works, they write down how many hours they've worked and when the month is over, our secretary, Bonnie Dixon adds up how much we've made, the percentage we get and she equates hours of volunteers to money and whatever mission they've helped, that money goes to that mission," said Vinson. Vinson says the pumpkins arrived in Seguin on Saturday after traveling in from Farmington, New Mexico. She says thanks to creative minds and a dedicated group of volunteers, the patch offers something new and different each year. "We just continue to add things to it. We add things to it every year and Vicki Spradling who had chaired it before, we now gave her carte blanche. She's no creative to add some things, maybe little decorations or whatever. So she's in that capacity in building and we've got some benches where there used to be bales of hay and she

just adds to the signs and of course, we started taking credit cards last year and now, that will be a big thing for us. We sell t-shirts and people come in the patch and take pictures and we just decorate it better I think. We add new decorations," said Vinson. The pumpkin patch, however, is more than just a place to buy pumpkins. She says it's place to learn and have fun. "We sell pumpkins all kinds. We have gourds. We have little pumpkins for a $1. We have white pumpkins. We have Cinderella pumpkins, the regular traditional orange pumpkins so kids can come out with their family and buy. People come out and get their picture made and also, we do schools. Elementary schools come and they come through and we set them up during the week and they do a science activity all about pumpkins outside. You sit on the benches. How you weigh pumpkins (and) you put a pumpkin in water. What pumpkin seeds do? Then, they go inside and they have storytelling about pumpkins. We have scavenger hunts for them. So, it's a big huge tradition for a lot of the schools and then, a lot of the younger kids come

through and they buy a pumpkin for a dollar so they give their little dollar to us and get a little pumpkin. It's just a whole lot of fun. The whole community is involved," said Vinson. Vinson is also inviting families to mark their calendars for at least two special events happening at the patch this year. They include the Blessing of the Animals on Saturday Oct. 19 and Hayrides on Saturday, Oct. 26.

wooded and you will have broken limbs every time the wind blows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center had an interesting hackberry pro and con article on their website. Two experts debated the merits of the hackberry. The tree is very tolerant of growing conditions and has a large native range. It is important for wildlife because the berries are eaten by birds and its leaves are the larval food of butterflies and moths. On the other hand, they have heavy infestations of mistletoe, every seed sprouts and you will find them in all your beds, and falling limbs and trees cause constant clean up. (I can agree with this. I have spent much money the last couple of years having broken trees cut down and removed.)

Q: How do I tell the difference between soapberry trees and chinaberry trees? I have one or the other on my property and can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t want chinaberry because they Q: I would like to plant some ornamental grasses in my landare so invasive. scape. What do you suggest? A: The monthly e-newsletter from Texasinvasives.org had a nice article on the chinaberry tree in August. It gave a way to tell the difference between the two trees when they both have fruit. Chinaberry fruit remains opaque during the winter. Soapberry fruit are translucent. During the growing season, chinaberry leaves have a lacy look and a musky odor with lavender flowers in the spring. Soapberry flowers are cream colored. Chinaberry are certainly invasive and are found in many of our Seguin parks. The tree was introduced in the middle 1800s from Asia. The Texas Department of Agriculture will not let the tree be sold, distributed or imported.

Q: My hackberry trees are starting to split and fall. How old do they get in this area? A: I found one source that said 20 to 30 years. However, remember that they are weak

A: My very favorite grass, particularly this time of year, is Gulf or coastal muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) which is a Texas native plant. It is a short grass, one and a half to two feet tall, and has pink fuzzy seed heads in the fall. It is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines through it. I check my plants and the ones in the Park West pollinator garden frequently to see if they are in bloom yet. Another favorite grass, also a Texas native, is inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grows to two feet and has ornamental seed heads during the summer and fall. The foliage sort of looks like very small bamboo, but doesn’t have that nasty bamboo-like habit of taking over the world. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
