City of Seguin tries to ease concerns about drinking water from Springs Hill Water Supply
(Seguin) -- A letter sent out recently by Springs Hill Water Supply has some people in the Seguin area wondering if the water is safe to drink. Those concerns ultimately led to the city of Seguin addressing the issue, which impacts some of its residents. City officials say they also wanted to reassure everyone that the city’s own
water supply is safe, and that Springs Hill’s water is also safe to consume.
Tim Howe, director of water and wastewater utilities, provided some insights during Tuesday night’s regular meeting of the Seguin City Council. The item wasn’t on the agenda, but Howe wanted to address some of the concerns that were
received by city officials, even though the letter had nothing to do with the city’s own water service.
“Springs Hill Water Corporation published a notice regarding water quality within their public water system. That generated some concerns and questions for our citizens. So, I just wanted to take this time to speak
about that,” said Howe.
The notice from Springs Hill included some technical language as required by federal and state standards. That language may have unfortunately led some people to think that the water from Springs Hill was unsafe.

Lions to host Fall Fling tonight
Famous pork steak dinners to be served
(Seguin) – You might want to leave tonight’s dinner up to the Lions. The Seguin Noon Lions Club will be serving up another round of pork steak dinners during its annual Fall Fling scheduled for tonight in the Silver Center parking lot. The drive-thru event will feature the meal by Troy Brown and Next Door Catering.
Lion Bill Klingemann says the organization hosts the meal twice a year -- once during its Spring Fling and, of course, during its Fall Fling held during this time of year.
“Folks from prior years talked about how much they enjoyed our pork steak dinners, and couldn’t we
do it twice a year? Well, we got to thinking about it and decided that it would be a great idea personally because, I love those pork steaks that Troy Brown and Next Door Catering make so you didn’t have to ask me twice.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the various charities that the Lions support year-round including the Lions KidSight program, a free vision screening and correction campaign for children ages 6 months through early grade school.
Plates are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the drive through. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Silver Center, Starcke Furniture, Ascot’s Custom Travel or at Tri County Air.
The plates will be served today from 5 to 7 p.m.
The Silver Center is located at 510 E. Center St. Vehicles are being asked to enter into the parking lot off of San Marcos Street.
Pre-fair events set for this weekend
Entries still sought for championship BBQ cookoff
(Seguin) -- If you are looking at firing up the grill this weekend, then you might want to consider doing so for the 21st Annual Guadalupe County Fair Association’s CBA State Championship BBQ Cook-Off.
The BBQ contest is just one of the many events that folks will find at the Fairgrounds as part of the PreWeekend events for this year’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo.
October 9th • 7PM
Jackson Auditorium
Keynote Speaker: Felicia Wu Song, author of Restless Devices, will be discussing how our devices are affecting our wellness. This event is free and open to all.
Seeking more entries for its BBQ cook-off is Tom Fox. The contest invites cooks of all levels to come out and compete in a variety of categories including chicken, pork ribs, port butt, brisket, jackpot beans plus “savory and dessert.”
Fox says there’s still plenty of time for folks to sign up for the weekend contest.
“Right now, we have 18 entries. We’d like to have up to 25 plus. That’s what actually makes us qualify to be a state championship cookoff, so we definitely need more entries,” said Fox.
Of course, all winning meat means cash awards for those top cooks. Fox says the true winners, however, are the kids who benefit from the scholarships that are raised by the weekend fundraiser.

Water, continued.
“In their notice, they reported a total trihalomethanes concentration of 0.84 parts per million in the fourth quarter of 2024. The maximum contaminate level established by the EPA is 0.80 parts per million. So, 4 one thousandths above the maximum contaminant level,” said Howe.
The thing that some readers may have missed in the letter, was that the naturally occurring contaminant is only harmful in situations where there is long term high levels of consumption, which was not the case with Springs Hill.
“Total Trihalomethanes is commonly referred to as TTHM’s or a group of volatile organic compounds that occur when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic matter in the water and they can pose a health risk if exposed to those long term. Springs Hill customers do not need to seek an alternate water supply and Springs Hill is working to correct this issue,” said Howe.
Howe again stressed that the city of Seguin operates its own water service, but he wanted to address the issue because some city residents do receive their water from Springs Hill. Howe says all water providers have to meet federal and state guidelines for water quality, and if there are any problems, they have to be disclosed to the public.
“Just for clarification purposes, I wanted to point
Fair, continued.
“We just want people to come out, have fun and compete. We do it for scholarships. All the money we collect goes to benefit our fair association’s scholarships that are predominately agriculturally related scholarships for kids in the local community. This is the 21st year of us doing this and we just need people to come out and have a good time and
out that Springs Hill is a separate water provider in our community and serves citizens in our community from the city of Seguin’s water utility. The Seguin Water Utility is not experiencing any levels of TTHM above the maximum contaminate level. The city’s latest – it’s called the Consumer Confidence Report – we publish it once a year, the latest levels of TTHM’s in the Seguin water supply was reported at 0.61 parts per million and that’s for our surface water and for our groundwater supply, it was .0039 parts per million and I will just say real quick that in groundwater, you have less naturally occurring organic matter than you do in surface water so that’s kind of the reason why groundwater is really low. All public water systems are required by the state and the federal regulations to monitor the quality of our water in our distribution system and to notify our customers if there are any concerns,” said Howe.
Even though the item wasn’t on the council’s agenda, Mayor Donna Dodgen thanked Howe for helping the public better understand what was contained in the report from Springs Hill, and that the water was safe to drink.
A copy of the original letter from Springs Hill Water Supply can be found online at https://springshill.org/ documents/577/2024_Mandatory_Language_for_a_ Maximum_Contaminant_Level_Violation_MCL_ LRAA_TTHM.docx.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Navarro Lady Panthers down Canyon Lake to even district record
Chris Austin
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers evened up their District 26-4A record at 1-1 with a straight sets victory over Canyon Lake, 25-11, 25-22, 25-17 on Tuesday night at Navarro High School.
The Lady Panthers cruised in the first set, but found themselves down 22-19 in the second set. Navarro would rally and roll off the next six points to go up two sets to none. The Lady Panthers were then able to hold off the Lady Hawks in the third set to gain the district sweep.
Navarro hitters Izzy Geipel, Kate Wozniak, Brooklyn Fox and Morgan Helms put away numerous shots in the victory. After the match, Lady Panther head coach Paige Poth said their setters were able to find good spots for their hitters.
“We got all hitters involved tonight. I was very impressed by that,” Poth said. “Friday against Wimberley was a tough one for us, but we did see what our open shots will be like so we can game plan.
“We’ve already seen Davenport in tournament play, so we have an idea of what we’re getting into on Friday. But, we utilized all of our hitters tonight and they did good offensively.”
Navarro fell at home to Wimberly last Friday in their district opener. The Lady Panthers will host San Antonio Davenport on Friday. The Lady Wolves are 2-0 in district after taking down Wimberley on the road on Tuesday. Friday’s match between the Lady Panthers and Lady Wolves gets underway at 6 p.m. at Navarro High School.
