“We’ll get those little devils!”
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M

(Seguin) -- If you are wanting to try your hand at Mutton Bustin', then you might want to take note of a major change for this year's Guadalupe County Fair contest. That's because qualifying for the Mutton Bustin' ride during next week's fair happens this Saturday night and Saturday night only. The contest is among a handful of events happening this weekend as part of the prefair events for the 136th Annual Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. Sarah Louque, the event coordinator for this year's fair, says instead of multiple opportunities to compete, kids now only have this one day to earn a spot in this year's contest. "It's changed this year because before in the past, you could either register for the BBQ weekend or you could register for both or you could just register for the fair weekend. Now, this year, you have to ride in (Saturday's) Mutton Bustin in order to ride for
the fair," said Louque. Out of that pool, organizers say they will then draw contestants for both Thursday and Friday nights -giving the top riders the chance to compete during the Saturday night's rodeo performance.Louque says the contest is always a fun event for the littlest of cowboys and cowgirls and encourages kids to come out and saddle a sheep in hopes of taking home a prize.
"It's not too late to enter Mutton Bustin'. Ages 4 to 7 can still come down. Books open at 6 p.m. and the Mutton Bustin' will start at about 6:45-7 o'clock. Come down. Registration forms will be there. Bring your kids," said Louque. Protective head and chest gear are required and will be provided by the GCFA. Books open at 6 p.m. Saturday with the rides starting at approximately 7 p.m. Cost is $25 per rider. Entry forms will be available on site or they can be found at www.gcfair.org. The 17th Annual IBCA State Championship Barbecue Cook-off and Jackpot Beans contest also
gets underway Friday and will be held through Saturday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Entries will be accepted through the end of Friday. Cost is $120 per team Entries include brisket, pork spare ribs, chicken halves and jack pot beans. Check-in will be from noon to 11 p.m. Friday. Entry forms can be dropped off on Friday at the fair office located behind Seguin Electric at 1405 N. Camp St. They may also contact BBQ Committee Chair Sara Louque at 830-477-9062. Other pre-fair events include the annual Guadalupe County Team Roping Event. Committee Co-Chair Mary Jahns says things get underway bright and early Saturday at the rodeo arena. "Saturday morning, we have the annual Guadalupe County Team Roping Event. It is for surrounding counties around Guadalupe County. Books open at 7:30 a.m. and then they close at 8:45 a.m. We rope at 9:30 a.m. It's $150 per man to enter. It's a #11 with a #6 cap only. We will be paying out
60 percent to the qualifier roping of that day. We are going to be holding back 15 percent to the rodeo. We are going to take the top 15 qualified team ropers for the rodeo. There's five on Thursday, five on Friday and five on Saturday. We are going to be giving out prizes and other things for that. So, if they have any questions or anything, they can contact me. There's also Facebook information on that too," said Jahns.
Jahns can be reached at 830-305-1950. Also getting a head start this weekend will be the Miss and Little Miss Roundup contests. The Miss and Little Miss RoundUp Horsemanship competition is set fro 3 p.m. Sunday in the rodeo arena. The competition will continue at 7 p.m. Monday in the Seguin Coliseum with this year's personality contest. The official schedule for the Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo runs from Oct. 11-13. All fair events and contest information can be found online at www.gcfair.org.
Let the pampering begin GRMC, continued from page 1 "Some new things that are coming this year is we are having a Kendra Scott Trunk Show. They are coming down from San Antonio and for every sale, there is a percentage that will go to the foundation, directly to the Cancer Assistance Fund. So, we are also trying to also generate some funds that can help our community and help our patients whenever they need that assistance. But same fun things, the free-flowing mimosas. That will still be there. We will still have some munchies and food. We'll have pampering
stations. We have the most vendors that we've had for this event for this year, the door prizes and of course, the mammograms talking about the advantages of making sure that you are proactive and preventative to get your annual screening. So we are wanting people to say 'hey, have you thought about the last time you got your mammogram? Is it time for your annual? You can sign up now.' We will have mammograms going on that day and then also talking about the advantages of 3-D mammography which GRMC offers and just talking about would you be a good candidate for 3-D mam-

Scheduled mammograms for this Saturday have already been booked but Maldonado says GRMC has recently restructured the way it schedules mammograms, increasing the overall number of available appointments for the public. The morning schedule will also include free yoga at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Mammos & Mimosas will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the GRMC Patient Tower. The event is free.

Geronimo VFD Supper set for this Saturday By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Geronimo) -- Geronimo Volunteer Fire Fighters are ready to battle the open flames at this year's BBQ Supper fundraiser. The annual event is scheduled for Saturday evening at the Geronimo Community Center located just across the street from its fire house on State Highway 123.
"The fundraiser gets people to come together and see people that they haven't seen maybe in a whole year. People come from out of town to our fundraiser to not only purchase barbecue plates at $10 per plate, they get to see people they haven't seen in a while along with getting to see the fire trucks and meet members of the department itself," said Castro.

Local churches to observe Blessing of the Animals
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Fur babies, feathered friends and even reptiles need a special blessing from time to time. Pet and animal owners from throughout the community are invited to attend a special Blessing of the Animals event this Saturday. St. Andrew's Episcopal will be offering the blessings in celebration of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. Tracy Donley, the communication specialist for St. Andrew's, says if you can bring it, they'll bless it. "This is a long standing tradition. I can remember being a kid at St. Andrew's

and coming to the Blessing of the Animals with my own pets so we've been doing this for a long time. We are honoring St. Francis. I believe St. Francis Day is Oct. 4, the day before the event but that's why we hold this event the first Saturday of October because we are thinking about St. Francis who was the Patron Saint of Animals. So, we really want to encourage people to come and bring any kind of pet-- any kind of pet at all -- reptiles, hedge hogs, horses and we want to also encourage this year that kids bring stuffed animals if they would like to. So, we can bless a teddy bear. Bring it and we'll bless it. That's all there is to it," said Donley. See BLESSING, page 7

Meanwhile, the park's department says it can still use a few local businesses or organizations willing to come out and lend a hand. Sourdellia says food trucks, children's activities plus vendors are still needed for this weekend's event. "So far, they said they only had a couple of food trucks and just a
few sponsor booths there so they are still looking for sponsors to host booths. The sponsorship is free. All we require is that the sponsors have a family friendly activity that's free to participants to do at their booth and the sponsors also need to provide all the items for their booth like a canopy, a table things like that or giveaways or the games that they are going to play," said Sourdellia. Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Seguin, Crockett battle for early edge in district standings at Matador Stadium, Homecoming game to air on KWED (Seguin) - Seguin and Austin-Crockett square off in the Matadors' annual Homecoming game Friday with a 2-0 start in District 12-5A-Division I play and an early leg up in the playoff race hanging in the balance. Travis Bush's Matadors (1-3, 1-0) recovered from three non-district losses to rout Austin-Northeast 44-6 in the 12-5A-Division I opener at Nelson Field two weeks ago.
The same can be said for Seguin, though the Matadors have produced bigger chunks of yardage through the air. The quarterback combination of senior Jhalen Mickles and junior Micah Rodriguez has produced 228 passing yards per game. Mickles makes his healthy return to the starting lineup Friday after missing the second half of the final non-district game against Central Catholic and all of the Northeast game two weeks ago.
John Waugh's Crockett Cougars moved to 2-2 on the year with a similar outcome in their first district game, a 54-2 rout of Austin-Navarro before the bye week. Each team features a running-back that has piled up prolific numbers in the first half of the season. Seguin junior Marques Washington enters Friday with 624 rushing yards (7.7 per carry), Crockett senior Andrew Jones comes in with 630 (7.8 per carry), and each player has scored nine touchdowns. "He's a good back, and they do a good job," Bush said of Jones and the Crockett offense. "They're well coached. They'll have some good schemes, and they like to pull those linemen around there and run the counter, so that's probably going to be where they feel the need to attack. They like to throw a lot of screens, different formations at you, but in the end, they want to get him the football."
The top targets for Mickles and Rodriguez have been Dravan McKnight (21 rec., 300 yds., 3 TD) and Clark Ullrich (18 rec., 207 yds., 2 TD). Seguin delivered its best defensive outing of the season in the win over Northeast, yielding just 85 total yards while forcing seven punts and limiting the Raiders to 1-10 on third down. The Matadors statistical leaders on that side of the ball include sophomore linebacker John Michael Mata (49 tackles, 1 Int.), sophomore defensive end Ian Box (10 TFL), and senior safety Dillion Gutierrez (Int. ret. for TD). Friday's Homecoming kickoff at Matador Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
The Cougars have complimented Jones with an efficient, if not explosive, passing game. Sophomore quarterback Michael Newton has completed 60 percent of his passes for 504 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Sports
(Seguin) - The Lifegate six-man football team returns to Falcon Field Friday to host the BastropTribe Warriors in a battle of high scoring squads with identical 41 records. The Falcons earned their fourth consecutive mercy rule win under first-year head coach John Stout last Friday with a 53-6 dismantling of Smoking For Jesus Ministry in Burnet. The Warriors average 58 points per game with a single-game high of 90, and ride the momentum of a 62-16 win over Williamson County into the matchup with Lifegate. Bastrop-Tribe's Samuel Osborne enters Friday with 1,191 rushing yards (13.1 per carry) and 23
touchdowns. "He's got really good blockers in front of him," Stout said. "They really stick with their block, and he really makes a cut off of their block, and he's pretty quick. We've got to get to him, and we've got to disrupt the offense, and cause chaos if we're going to do anything with these guys. These guys are going to be tough."
68 percent of his passes for 442 yards and seven scores with only one interception. Luke Landin and Barson Schmidt have chipped in with three rushing touchdowns apiece, while Zachary McCulloch has coralled three scoring passes. The Falcons' defensive leaders include Shellnut (36 tackles, 1 Int.), Schmidt (6 sacks, 1 Int.), and Joseph Menchaca (4 fumble recoveries).
Lifegate's Quinten Shellnut has been just as explosive and more versatile, gashing defenses with his legs and his arm. The junior spread-back has rushed for 866 yards (12.7 per carry) and 21 touchdowns while completing
Friday's kickoff at Falcon Field is set for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Stout can be heard during the Falcon Report between 6:45 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

cited about. I know our secondary guys are really excited about it, because hopefully they can get some interceptions and different things like that."
Marion opened the 15-3A-Division I slate with a 31-28 road win to move to 3-2 in Ryne Miller's second season as head coach last Friday.
The Cougars will have their hands full defensively with Marion's senior quarterback Zach Goodwin and his versatile cast of receivers. Goodwin enters Friday 1,005 yards, 11 touchdowns, and only one interception through the air to go with 247 yards and three scores on the ground.
The 3-2 Cougars, coached by John Reyes, stretched their winning streak to three games with a 37-6 blowout of Karnes City in San Antonio. Cole has averaged 39.7 points during that span behind the legs of running-back Jai'zon Brooks and the arm of Walker Cunningham. "You've got to know where Jaizon Brooks is," Miller said. "He's a heck of a football player. He had a great game against us last year. But I think just understanding where those guys are at. Once again, we kind of see a true spread team this week, which I know our guys are ex-
Jayden Williams (16 rec., 302 yds., 2 TD), Jacob Devora (22 rec., 300 yds., 5 TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt (10 rec., 148 yds., 2 TD) lead the Bulldogs' receiving corps. Ray Rayos (218 yds., TD) adds some punch to the rushing attack. The Bulldogs and Cougars kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Stadium. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report between 6:45 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.
TLU seeks road upset of No. 6 Hardin Simmons, Saturday's game to air on KWED (Abilene) - Texas Lutheran looks to strengthen its NCAA Division III playoff chances Saturday with a road win over a nationally ranked American Southwest Conference rival as the Bulldogs visit No. 6 Hardin Simmons at Shelton Stadium in Abilene. TLU has recovered from a season opening 26-23 loss to Hendrix with consecutive wins over ASC opponents who also had preseason designs on crashing the annual Mary Hardin-Baylor/ Hardin Simmons party at the top of the conference standings.
The TLU defense faces its toughest test of the season against a Cowboys offense that leads the ASC in scoring (48.5) and ranks third nationally in total offense (568.8). HSU also boast Division III football's individual rushing leader in pre-season All-American Jaquan Hemphill, who enters Saturday with 600 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Hardin Simmons has been just as dominant on defense. The Cowboys have surrendered ASC lows in points (9.0), total offense (202.2), passing yards (135), and third down conversion percentage (22.2). The unit's All-ASC returnees include defensive end Hunter Creasey and safeties Blake Johnston and Dedrick Strambler. Strambler sat out last week and is not listed on HSU's two-deep for the TLU game.
The Bulldogs pulled away from East Texas Baptist 31-21 on Sept. 21 in Marshall and used a dominant defensive effort to shut out Southwestern 27-0 in Seguin last Saturday. Hardin Simmons moved to 4-0 in head coach Jesse Burleson's ninth season, 3-0 in the ASC, with a 51-6 thumping of Louisiana College last week.
The Cowboys balance that running game with ASC passing leader Brennan Wooten (1,045 yds, 12 TD) and the conference's top receiver Kevi Evans (25 rec., 579 yds., 8 TD). TLU's senior linebacker Derek Dunn is the reigning ASC Defensive Player of the Week after totaling 11 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks in the shutout of Southwestern. Cornerback Kedrick Ward recovered two fumbles, one of which he returned 15 yards for a touchdown. Junior linebacker Dakwa Davis enters Saturday with a team-high 29 tackles. He and pre-season All-America defensive end Manny Longoria each have three tackles for loss.

Blessing of animals set for VFD to host fundraiser Saturday morning GERONIMO, continued from page 3
BLESSING, continued from page 3 Again, Donley says all animals are welcome but they do ask that they are kept on a leash, in a cage, in a trailer or in a bowl. "We do appreciate it if you will bring your animal in a leash or a cage if it's a hamster or a lizard or something like that. We wouldn't want any accidents. We will have trash cans on site and of course, extra bags for picking up messes, things like that so we do ask that people bring their pet on a leash and please, bring those stuffed animals. We'd love to bless them too," said Donley.
"One great thing this year that we haven't done in about six to eight years now is the raffle tickets. We actually implemented (them) this year again. They are $2 each or $6 for 10. Again, they can be purchased by any member and at the fundraiser itself there at the Community Center. The barbecue kicks off at about 5 o'clock and I believe the music will be by Best Friends. Shortly after that, the live auction starts about 6:30 p.m.," said Castro. Some of this year's raffle prizes include gift cards to Cabella's, Walmart, Granzin's and Home Depot. Castro says the growing community makes this event even more important. He says the fundraiser is just one of the major ways that residents can support the area VFD.
The event is free. Those attending, however, are encouraged to bring cat "The community has grown since I've joined the or dog food to donate to the Guada- department by at least 50 percent. that there has been talk on a new development in the next two years. They tell us there can be an addition of 1,200 new homes specifically off of the 123 and FM 758 intersection. Vaping Lung Damage
Judge Sides With Nonprofit's Supervised Injection Site
(Undated) -- Doctors are learning more about the damage vaping does to a person's lungs. A study of samples taken from people suffering lung illnesses from e-cigarettes was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. It shows chemical burns on the lungs that one doctor leading the study compared to injuries someone suffers when exposed to a spilled drum of toxic chemicals. The CDC has confirmed hundreds of cases of vaping-related illness across the country. Vaping has been linked to over a dozen deaths.
(Philadelphia, PA) -- A federal judge says a Philadelphia nonprofit's plan to open the nation's first supervised drug injection site doesn't violate federal law. U.S. District Judge Gerald McHugh ruled that Safehouse's attempt to help opioid abusers in a medical facility doesn't infringe the Controlled Substances Act. He wrote "The ultimate goal of Safehouse's proposed operation is to reduce drug use, not facilitate it." The Department of Justice says they're disappointed with the ruling, and will take any available steps "to pursue further judicial review."
Bernie Sanders Feeling Great After Heart Surgery
Beyonce's Dad Talks About His Battle With Breast Cancer
(Las Vegas, NV) -- Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is feeling great after heart surgery. A campaign aide told the New York Times that blood is flowing again through a blocked artery and that the Democratic presidential candidate feels better than ever. The Sanders campaign canceled his events for the coming days while he recovers. The campaign said Sanders experienced some chest discomfort last night, which led him to be checked out. Surgeons inserted two stents to one artery to relieve the blockage. The 78-year-old Senator was in Las Vegas to participate with the other candidates in a gun forum. He was scheduled to travel to California later this week.
(New York, NY) -- Beyonce's father says he was diagnosed with breast cancer after getting tested two months ago. Mathew Knowles told ABC's Good Morning America he decided to get a mammogram after noticing small blood stains on his shirts and sheets. He's had surgery since then and says he's doing well. The 67-year-old helped propel Beyonce to fame, managing her early career with Destiny's Child and says he hopes speaking out will encourage other men to consider getting tested for breast cancer.

wooded and you will have broken limbs every time the wind blows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center had an interesting hackberry pro and con article on their website. Two experts debated the merits of the hackberry. The tree is very tolerant of growing conditions and has a large native range. It is important for wildlife because the berries are eaten by birds and its leaves are the larval food of butterflies and moths. On the other hand, they have heavy infestations of mistletoe, every seed sprouts and you will find them in all your beds, and falling limbs and trees cause constant clean up. (I can agree with this. I have spent much money the last couple of years having broken trees cut down and removed.)
Q: How do I tell the difference between soapberry trees and chinaberry trees? I have one or the other on my property and can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t want chinaberry because they Q: I would like to plant some ornamental grasses in my landare so invasive. scape. What do you suggest? A: The monthly e-newsletter from Texasinvasives.org had a nice article on the chinaberry tree in August. It gave a way to tell the difference between the two trees when they both have fruit. Chinaberry fruit remains opaque during the winter. Soapberry fruit are translucent. During the growing season, chinaberry leaves have a lacy look and a musky odor with lavender flowers in the spring. Soapberry flowers are cream colored. Chinaberry are certainly invasive and are found in many of our Seguin parks. The tree was introduced in the middle 1800s from Asia. The Texas Department of Agriculture will not let the tree be sold, distributed or imported.
Q: My hackberry trees are starting to split and fall. How old do they get in this area? A: I found one source that said 20 to 30 years. However, remember that they are weak
A: My very favorite grass, particularly this time of year, is Gulf or coastal muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) which is a Texas native plant. It is a short grass, one and a half to two feet tall, and has pink fuzzy seed heads in the fall. It is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines through it. I check my plants and the ones in the Park West pollinator garden frequently to see if they are in bloom yet. Another favorite grass, also a Texas native, is inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grows to two feet and has ornamental seed heads during the summer and fall. The foliage sort of looks like very small bamboo, but doesn’t have that nasty bamboo-like habit of taking over the world. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
