Purple Tie Gala helps to bring an end to domestic violence

(Seguin) -- A major party this week will celebrate the more than four decades of work that's been done by the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter (GVFVS). The nonprofit group will host its Purple Tie Gala on Thursday at the Soel Venue in downtown Seguin.

GVFVS Board Chair Erica Kiser says the gala will be a night of fun for a very good cause. She says a few tickets still remain for the event.

“There's going to be a live auction and a silent auction. Of course, we're going to have tons of entertainment and dinner. There will be minimal talking, we promise. We just want...(to provide

a) little bit of information, that we want to hand out. But we're going to keep the talking to a minimum because this really is a celebration of our time here, and that we can celebrate all of our thrivers that have come along with us for the ride. And you know, we just want to share with the community. You don't have to be a part of our organization or a donor in any way. If you just want to have a night out, come and see what we're doing and see what we're up to. We would love to have you,” said Kiser.

GVFVS Executive Director Delilah Reyes says it will be a fun night, but it also provides a chance to shine a spotlight on the need for the community to do more Gala, pg. 2

Hiding a device from an abusive PARTNER?

(Seguin) -- If you’re in a dangerous and volatile relationship at home, you may have a phone or other device that you keep secret from your partner. This device may be your lifeline to the outside world, and you’ve done a good job keeping it hidden. But there may be some additional steps that you need to take today to protect yourself and that hidden device.

On Wednesday, the federal government will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). This test will impact everything from radios to televisions to cell phones. It’s not a big deal for most of us, but if you’re trying to keep a device hidden, you may need to take

some extra precautions, because that device will likely produce an audible alert during the test.

Delilah Reyes, executive director of the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter, says this will not be a big deal for most of us, but for those who rely on the hidden devices, they need to take some extra precautions that day.

Traffic stop leads to a drug bust on IH-10

(Seguin) -- A 21-year-old man from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico faces federal prosecution after a traffic stop on IH-10 resulted in his arrest.

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Narcotics Lt. John Flores says on Friday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m., K-9 Sgt. Dustin Crawford conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 Ford F150 on Interstate 10 eastbound near the 615mile marker. While speaking with the driver, he says Sgt. Crawford observed criminal indicators consistent with drug trafficking.

Gala, continued.

Sgt. Crawford deployed his K-9 partner Eddie for an open-air sniff of the vehicle. It was then that K-9 Eddie was alerted to the odor of narcotics. Sgt. Crawford searched the vehicle and located a metal cylinder

to take a stand against domestic violence.

"We're going to be able to do some networking and mingling, and just hanging out and celebrating that we've been in this movement for as long as we've been. And bringing that awareness out there, because it is a heavy top topic, But you know, bringing the awareness is a positive thing, because it allows people to shamelessly discuss these topics, and not feel that it's theirs to carry alone. I think that's the positive side of it, right? So come out, enjoy some drinks with us, and Burnt Bean is catering. If you haven't had a chance to try Burnt Bean, this will be your opportunity," said Reyes.

The organization started a shelter for battered women in 1983. Since that time, it has grown into something much more. Reyes says their organization does a lot more than just provide shelter for families facing abusive situations at home. She says that's one of the reasons why they will be making some big announcements during Thursday night's gala.

"Our doors have been open for 40 years as of this year. So, we wanted to be able to celebrate that. We also know that we have a lot of really good things in the works. We've been in this shelter for almost 40 years...so we are planning on launching a capital campaign. Part of that is doing some of the footwork that we've been in the works of, and creating this event is one of those things. So that we can do this again next year, and this becomes our annual fundraiser to be able to support making this build happen. At this event, we will also be announcing our rebrand. We are changing our name. We will still be servicing the same people in the same area. A lot of people think that we only service Guadalupe County, and you know, since we do service Karnes, Wilson, and Gonzales (counties), we want to make sure that we have

in the bed of the pickup truck. It was discovered that the metal cylinder contained a false compartment. Once the cylinder was opened, Flores says 7.20 kilograms of cocaine were found inside. The value of the seized drugs totaled $100,800.

The driver was identified as Eduardo Alejandro Salazar Martinez. Martinez was placed under arrest. Martinez has since been released to the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) for federal prosecution.

that umbrella," said Reyes.

The need for a new shelter is long overdue, and the eventual capital campaign will help them get there. But Reyes says they also want to be able to share details about all of the other work that they do with families and individuals in need across this area.

"We aren't just a shelter. That's only about 10 percent of the services that we provide. So, 90 percent of the services that we provide are non-residential. Those people never stay a night in the shelter. They come in and they use our advocates, they use our legal aid services, they use our counseling, they use our safety planning, the court advocates that go and with them during court and they just kind of hold their hand, and the sexual assault SANE exams. The wonderful ladies that we have on our team that go out and provide that support during such a horrible time in someone's life. And they go out there and they do that work with a lot of those victims, who don't ever come into shelter. We go out there and we provide those services outside of the shelter. And a lot of times, with our name, it doesn't encompass all that we do," said Reyes.

Kiser and Reyes say the work they do is challenging, but they hope that people will come out to the Purple Tie Gala just to have a good time. They say a number of ticket options are still available.

"It is $75 a ticket or $500 for tables. We still have some sponsorships available so you can go to our Facebook page and there's a link on there that has all of the sponsorship packages and options to be able to purchase -- individual tickets as well," said Reyes.

Again, tickets can be purchased by visiting the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter's Facebook page. A link can also be found on our website, seguintoday. com. The Purple Tie Gala begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Soel Venue, located at 112 W. Donegan St.

Alert, continued.

“In the harsh reality of domestic violence, abusers often exert extreme control and isolation over survivors. They monitor their every move and seek to cut off all communication with anyone outside of their influence. Survivors may resort to using hidden devices as a lifeline, allowing them to maintain contact with loved ones, connect with agencies like ours, and even contact 911. These devices are their silent protectors, providing a means of safety,” said Reyes.

Reyes says the test will be sent today (Wednesday) at exactly 1:20 p.m.. This, again, means those worried about the device being discovered need to make sure it can’t be heard.

“To protect these hidden devices from discovery, we strongly urge survivors to power off all their devices during this time. Your safety is paramount. Please, pass this warning on to anyone you know who may be in an unsafe

situation. Together, we can help keep them safe,” said Reyes. Reyes says if you or someone you know is in need of services or just someone to talk to for safety planning, please reach out to GVFVS at 830-372-2780. She says they are available 24/7, and they are there to support people in need. Reyes says GVFVS wants to remind victims that they are not alone, and that help is always available to them.

The test will not only be sent to cellphones, radios and televisions -- some smartwatches may also receive a test alert. Reyes says if you’re worried about your safety, it’s best to just leave it powered off on that day. For everyone else, the national test is largely viewed as an important tool for responses during major emergency events. Again, tickets can be purchased by visiting the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter’s Facebook page. A link can also be found on our website, seguintoday. com. The Purple Tie Gala begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Soel Venue, located at 112 W. Donegan St.

TLU hosts national power Mary HardinBaylor at Bulldog Stadium this Saturday

(Seguin) -- National power Mary HardinBaylor will be in Seguin this Saturday on the campus of Texas Lutheran University when the TLU Bulldogs host the Crusaders at Bulldog Stadium.

Texas Lutheran is coming off a near comeback win in the Big Bend against Sul Ross State last Saturday. The Lobos kicked a field goal on the final play of the game to escape with a 37-34 victory. The Bulldogs erased a 34-10 fourth quarter deficit to tie the game late, but ultimately fell short in Alpine to fall to 1-3 on the season.

UMHB has brought three NCAA DivisionIII national championships to Belton in the last

seven years. Mary Hardin-Baylor is 1-3 this season but all three of their losses have come to D-III ranked opponents, #4 WisconsinWhitewater, #5 Trinity and #23 WisconsinRiver Falls.

TLU head coach Neal LaHue says the Crusaders have speed in all phases of the game.

“It starts with their defense. They like to fly around. They’re very talented up front,” LaHue said. “They’re very similar to what we do offensively. They’re gonna try to spread you out (with) run-pass options and the wide-zone. And they do a great job of play action pass off of that.

“We can’t give up the big play. They have

great return guys. Last year, we were leading them in the first quarter and they ran back a 96yard punt that we laid right in the corner where the punter is supposed to and we let him get out. So, they won’t fair catch it inside the ten. They’re gonna try to take it to the house every time. So, we’ve got to do a great job in special teams as well to try to contain them.”

Saturday’s game between Texas Lutheran and Mary Hardin-Baylor kicks off at 1 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. We’ll have all the action for you on KWED. It all starts with our Bulldog pregame show at 12:30 Saturday afternoon on AM 1580 and streaming at TLUBulldogs.com.

75,000 Workers Prep For Biggest Healthcare Strike In U.S. History

(Undated) -- More than 75-thousand Kaiser-Permanente [[ KYE-zer per-ma-NEN-tee ]] workers are getting ready to go on what would be the biggest healthcare strike in U.S. history. Unions representing the workers notified the company more than a week ago that they could launch a three-day strike on Wednesday. Negotiations on pay, outsourcing, and staffing are stalled. The strike would affect Kaiser hospitals and clinics in California, Oregon, Washington state, Colorado, Virginia, and Washington DC.

Two Parts Of NC Abortion Law Blocked

(Raleigh, NC) -- Two parts of North Carolina’s new abortion law are being blocked. A federal judge granted injunctions on two provisions Saturday, which kept them from going into effect yesterday. One referenced a vague part of the law which required doctors to confirm the presence of a fetus in the uterus before medicine is prescribed for abortion. Another provision that was blocked required abortions under certain conditions, like rape, to be completed in hospitals.

Cytomegalovirus Screening Begins For All NY Newborns (New York, NY) -- Universal cytomegalovirus screening has begun in New York for all newborns. That makes New York the second state in the nation after Minnesota to require such screening. Babies born with CMV, which is a herpes virus, can develop long-term health issues including hearing loss, vision impairment, seizures and other disabilities. Eight other states require CMV screening for infants who fail the newborn hearing screening. They are Illinois, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Utah and Virginia.

Thousands Of Cantaloupes Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Contamination (Scottsdale, AZ) -- An Arizona produce company is recalling thousands of cantaloupes over possible salmonella contamination. The FDA says melons shipped by Eagle Produce recently tested positive for the bacteria at a distribution center. The recall applies to whole cantaloupes sold under the Kandy Produce brand between September 5th and 16th. They were shipped to nearly 20 states.

We love what we do. And it shows.

We are honored that Modern Healthcare Magazine has named us one of the best places to work in the nation — again. Our collective dedication to providing world class healthcare means we are all passionate about taking care of you and your family for many years to come.
