Backyard Bull Riding comes to Seguin this Sunday

Cowboys across the globe to compete in Seguin

(Seguin) – Those wanting to get a jumpstart on cheering on some cowboys before next week’s Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo can do so this Sunday during the Backyard Bull Riders (BBR) Seguin Showcase.

BBR Productions Where Legends Begin will again be bringing the pre-fair event back to Seguin this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Guadalupe Rodeo Arena.

Mike King, one of the founders of BBR, says the event gives bull riders of all levels the chance to gain some experience in competition. He says this weekend, Seguin will welcome anywhere from 35 to 40 bull riders.

“It’s just a good thing for the community to come out and see and witness firsthand because a lot of these guys are local guys and not only are some of them local guys but there

are some from like maybe Houston or maybe some from Dallas, maybe some from Brazil, maybe some from Australia. There’s going to be a variety of people here competing for the bull riding and right now, I figured the payout is going to be about $10,000 for these guys. So, it’s not just a hobby for them,” said King.

While these guys and gals might not be world champions, King says they all come with plenty of good talent making the BBR a very exciting and sometimes intense show.

“The PRCA Rodeo is coming to town next week and it’s definitely a little bit different venue because there’s better riders, there are ropers, there are barrel racers, there are bull riders but just to showcase the bull riding because everybody waits for the bull riding.

St. James Fall Festival returns to Seguin Events Complex

Petting zoo, live music, auctions plus raffles among events

(Seguin) – The fall season officially arrives this weekend in Seguin. Helping to usher in the change in season will be the St. James Catholic Church Fall Festival. The Fall Festival will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Seguin Events Complex.

Kelly Roybal, one of the coordinators for this year’s event, says the festival over the years has become a fan favorite for the entire city and will again include plenty of family fun.

“We are still going to have our petting zoo and train rides. We still have our bounce houses and this year, the school is participating as far each of the grades is going to have their own game that they are going to run with their own set of prizes,” said Roybal.

Topping this year’s lunch menu will be pork steaks with all the trimmings. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost, which includes a drink, is $13.

Roybal says while they are

eating, folks will also get the chance to check out several fabulous auction prizes that will be up for bid. The live auction gets underway at noon while the silent auction will be open for bids from noon to 2 p.m.

“We have donations from D&D Ranch Wear, beautiful dresses, jackets – some that come with a handbag. We have Consuelo bags. We have a Coach bag. We have a full day stay in Round Rock. We have jewelry. We have hats. We have beautiful baskets. We have big shrimp boil dinners that are going to be up for auction as well,” said Roybal.

In addition to walking away with an auction prize, individuals will also get a chance to try their luck at taking home a prize in this year’s raffle.

Roybal says this year’s raffle will include 40 different gift cards.

“The raffle, you don’t have to be there to win. We will have tickets available that day. They are $2 a piece and we have gift cards that range from $100 to $500. Everywhere from Walmart to Granzin’s to HEB so a little bit of everything for everyone,” said Roybal.

Keeping folks entertained throughout the grounds will be live music in the Coliseum gazebo. Kicking things off will be Gacho Sol. The band will perform at 10:30 a.m. Following Gacho Sol will be Clint Taft and the Buck Wild Band at 2 p.m.

Those wishing to purchase raffle tickets in advance may do so at the church office. The church office is located at 510 S. Camp St.

Final call for Best Western Wear Roundup contestants

Little cowboys, cowgirls encouraged to enter now

(Seguin) — Do you think you have the cutest cowboy or cowgirl?

The Guadalupe County Fair Association is looking to rope in some last-minute contestants for its annual Best Western Wear Roundup.

Organizers are giving parents and guardians until 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7 to enter the contest slated for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Seguin Coliseum.

The contest is designed for boys ages 0-5 and 0-7 for girls.

Committee Chair Madeline Zwicke Dalman says of all the contests at the fair, she believes this is the cutest of them all. Plus, she says each will get the chance to walk

away with some great prizes to include belt buckles, gift cards and even passes to places such as ZDT’s Amusement Park, Jungle Jam and the Seguin Wave Pool.

“This contest is a great way for the little ones to get involved in the fair for the first time and so I always think it’s one of the cutest things that you are going to see at the fair but open to ages 0-5 for boys and girls. So, we have boys and girls’ divisions 0-1, 2-3 and 4-5 and then we have a Girls’ Queen Division for ages 6-7. So, all are welcome,” said Dalman.

Dalman says all children will be judged on appearance, personality and uniqueness of their outfit. Roundup, pg. 3

Bulls, continued.

That’s why it’s the last event so we are having the bull riding first this week to kick off the PRCA Rodeo. It’s very entertaining to see these younger guys. They haven’t got it down to the max as some of the professional cowboys. Anything goes. These guys – they are going to show up. They might not have the equipment and the stuff that the other guys have but at the same time, they got the heart,” said King.

King says the BBR is hoping to rope in even more

fans to its show this Sunday. He says bringing the BBR to Seguin is a win-win for everyone.

“We are trying to get butts in the seat because hey, all these proceeds go to the FFA and 4H people. It’s going back to the community, the youth. We need to get people in there to see the event, that way, we can come back next year. Everybody gets something if the community comes out here and supports the event,” said King.

Tickets are $15 a person. Kids ages 10 and under are free. Tickets will be available at the door. To learn more visit www.backyardbullriders.com.

Get your free rodeo tickets for next Thursday’s kickoff of the Fair and Rodeo, and make sure you stay for the free dance that night, featuring music by Madyln Abrameit from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Entering the contest, however, does not mean going out and buying a whole new wardrobe. Dalman says it’s just about having fun, being stylish with whatever you have and helping to create those memories.

“I feel like you can wear something you might already have at home or even maybe some good hand me downs from a friend or family member – (those) are always great. For the boys, I usually see some cute little Wrangler jeans and some boots and maybe a little belt buckle and pearl snap shirt and for the girls, I’ve seen anything from jeans and boots to dresses and skirts, cowgirl hats – you name it. But you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a brandnew outfit. I just encourage people if you have something in the closet that will work for the kids -- then come as you are, get them on stage and have them participate in the fair,” said Dalman.

The free Thursday night rodeo tickets will be available while supplies last. Information on rodeo tickets for the remainder of the fair schedule can be found at gcfair.org. Families are also invited to stop by the radio station to pick up a fair catalog. KWED Radio is located at 609 E. Court St.

In addition, Grand Champion winners and the 6-7-year-old Queen and Queen’s Court will be recognized at the Fair Queen’s Contest and PRCA Rodeo being held later that day on Saturday.

The deadline to enter the contest via email is 5 p.m. Monday. Participants are asked to enter by providing a description of their attire to madelinezwicke@yahoo.com.

NY Governor Signs Legislation Expanding Breast Cancer Screening Coverage

(Albany, NY) -- During this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, New York Governor Kathy Hochul is signing legislation expanding insurance coverage for screenings. The new law will require insurance companies to pay for breast ultrasounds and MRIs, not just for mammograms. That’s particularly important for women who have dense breasts because tumors in that group are often more difficult to spot. Governor Hochul says every woman should have access to breast cancer screening procedures that are recommended by nationally recognized clinical practice guidelines.

Chicago Lab Owner Pleads Guilty To COVID-19 Fraud Scheme

(Chicago, IL) -- The owner of a Chicago laboratory is admitting to taking part in a COVID-19 testing fraud scheme. Zishan Alvi pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services paid the laboratory more than 14-million-dollars as a result of the fraudulent claims.

Study Shows One-Minute Phone Breaks Boost Student Focus In Class

(Carbondale, IL) -- It may sound counterintuitive, but a new study shows that short phone breaks enhance student focus in class. Researchers at Southern Illinois University studied college students and found that letting them have a brief phone or technology break boosted classroom performance. But it had to be really short...two to four-minutes was too long...but one-minute was just right. Their theory: that 60 seconds is just enough time to send a text message without getting involved in a back-and-forth conversation. They found that students paid better attention in class and had higher test scores when they got these brief breaks.

Q: It is definitely fall because I see goldenrod and frostweed blooming. Both are absolutely covered with butterflies. When do I plant other perennials that attract butterflies?

A: Now is the prime time to plant perennials such as butterfly weed, lantana, purple coneflower, verbena, and salvias according Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist.

Lantana is a nice perennial to have because of its freeflowering habit. Greg Grant and Jerry Parsons wrote a great article in 1989 (re-quoted in an aggie-horticulture article) about lantana and suggested that it was best used as a warm season annual that should be replanted each spring. With our weather getting warmer, we probably will not need to replant. The plant is drought tolerant, and attracts birds and butterflies. It has high deer resistance which, as you know, just means that if nothing else is available, they will eat the plant.

The blue-black fruit clusters are poisonous according to Wildflower.org. Grant and Parsons add that the plants are poisonous to cattle and sheep, although early colonists used the fruit to make infusions to be taken as medicine and as a remedy for snake bites. Newer varieties of lantana are sterile so that they have no fruit, and will bloom continuously.

There are many fall blooming plants in our area including little bluestem, chrysanthemums, firespike, Mexican mint marigold,

and gulf muhly. I am really looking forward to the lovely pink display on my gulf muhly when it is backlit by the sun.

Q: What shrubs provide berries in the fall and winter?

A: At my house I have American beautyberry, possumhaw, and yaupon. Now is a good time to go to the local nursery and pick out your plant while it has berries and you can see what you are getting. My yaupon has multiple trunks and never causes me a bit of grief (although it does need to be kept trimmed and away from my roof once in a while).

American beautyberry is also lovely to grow. Some years back non-native beautyberries were planted in a local park. They did not do as well as our native ones. American beautyberry is larger, more upright, and is slightly taller than wide according to the Piedmont Master Gardeners. Huntsville Botanical Gardens adds another difference: the non-native beautyberry has purple berries but they don’t wrap fully around the stem, and the fruit is further from the stem. There is a lovely American beautyberry at our Seguin public library on the south side of the front door.

Q

: Is it time to fertilize my lawn?

A

: Welsh reminds us to not apply fall fertilizer until warmseason lawns have stopped growing and that is usually when you have not had to mow for two weeks.
