Made in Seguin: Students take on the job of learning more, tour area manufacturing facilities SEDC director shares importance in recruitment of companies By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin, Navarro and Marion High School students on Friday donned the safety glasses, hard hats and ear plugs at an opportunity to learn more of what career paths lie within the walls of Seguin's many manufacturing facilities. In observance of National Manufacturing Day, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation hosted student bus tours for the area sophomores. The group of 189 students visited a total of nine different manufacturing plants throughout the community. The students are either enrolled in a CTE (Career and Technical Education) class or have expressed a desire to learn more. SEDC executive director Josh Schneuker, says this marks the third year that the city has teamed up with the local schools to help students observe and learn all the available career pathways that exist right here at home. He says these are careers that are ready for the taking upon the completion of high school or that will be waiting for them when they return home from college. See STUDENTS, page 3

BroncoBotz FIRST, a competitive non-profit robotics program, was among those vendors showcasing how studying robotics can go hand in hand with a career in manufacturing. This group of Seguin High School students got to experience an up close illustration of that technology at Alamo Group Texas during Friday's bus Manufacturing bus tour hosted by the SEDC.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M

"I think there is plenty of opportunity for students that are both college bound and not college bound to work in the manufacturing industry. It's just educating them on what those career pathways are. You might not need to go to a four year college for it but there's a lot of sophisticated positions that require additional workforce training and a lot of times, what we see is that the companies are just looking for good people to come in and they are making the investment in the employees to help them learn those hard skills. But if we could find the workers with the soft skills, that eagerness to learn, to be on work on time, things like that -companies and manufacturers will make the investment in you and help push your career path forward within the industry," said Schneuker. Schneuker says the perception of manufacturing for some is not always positive. However, here in Seguin, he says those negative perceptions are quickly put to rest when people see exactly what is going on under those large signs that read Cargill, CMC, Caterpillar...etc. "It will really blow your mind of what's being made here and the sophistication behind the processes. There's a lot of skilled individuals here that are really hard working and just doing what they can to make ends meat everyday and we are lucky to have so many manufacturers in this community that are giving people an opportunity tap into well pay-

ing jobs and these jobs -- you may not think they have a career pathway but at the end of the day, when you come in and learn more about it and gain some more knowledge and the industry and what they are actually making, there are viable career pathways in manufacturing. Even outside of maybe welding or machine operators, there's other positions and things like that within a manufacturing operation that might be more of the back office type thing. It's a very diverse industry that has a variety of different occupations involved in it," said Schneuker. Schneuker says one of the most important lessons that students took away during their tour is that Seguin is a powerhouse when it comes to the manufacturing industry. He says data shows the Seguin region alone having 6,000 manufacturing jobs. "When you are looking and comparing yourself to a national average, that's probably three times greater than the national average so we really are a manufacturing powerhouse not only within this region of Texas but really in the state and I"m sure that if you compared us to other similar communities across the country, we will be leading the pack in terms of manufacturing presence in our community," said Schneuker. Schneuker says during the tour, students also learned how Seguin's position on the map makes it a very attractive place to do business. "A lot of what is made in Seguin is not only exported throughout the United States but really all over the world and our location within two

and a half and three hours of the Port of Houston allows a lot of our manufacturers to bring in that raw material or export their product to a global market. Then, I'd also like to bring up the fact that we are a rapidly growing community not to only here in Seguin but throughout the region and that's really attractive to companies that are looking at our area. They don't want to be in an area where they see a contraction in the area. They want to see growth and with our manufacturing presence here already, that equates to having that skilled workforce in place and a lot of times what you see in manufacturing is folks that work in this industry have transferable skills that can be impeccable really across the spectrum in manufacturing," said Schneuker. Schneuker says the tours are an extension of the the city's Talent Pipeline effort -- an effort that also works in partnership with the schools and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce in recruiting and growing business. He says often times, folks in the community question why his office is largely focused on the recruitment of manufacturers instead of new retail. He says that idea couldn't be any farther from the truth and says the more jobs you have, the more opportunity for a community to grow. He says recruiting new manufacturers and increasing the residential activity go hand in hand in helping to change the overall tune of a community. Schneuker says because of the recruitment of companies, like last week's groundbreaking announce-

ment by Continental Structural Plastics, there is a stronger focus on Seguin by retailers and retailer developers. "It's not something that is going to happen overnight just because we've got retail development taking place. It's still a process. Those homes have to be built. People still have to move into those homes and a lot of times, these decisions are made with folks behind a computer. So, we are out there in the trenches trying to get one on one face time with these folks and let them know about what's happening here in Seguin. I think it's going to help us at the end of the day see some hopefully acceleration in our retail recruitment efforts because it is something that the EDC is very involved in. We are very aggressive on the retail recruitment front and pushing very hard to get new retailers in the community, diversify our retailer base here and it's definitely easier said than done but I've personally seen the attention now focused on Seguin a little bit more than it has in the past and that's a good sign and it's a matter of time that we see dominos fall on the retail side," said Schneuker. The manufacturers who opened their plant doors to the students on Friday included Alamo Group Texas; The Koehler Company, Caterpillar, Central States Manufacturing, Minigrip, Cargill, CMC Steel Texas, Niagara Bottling and Vitesco Technologies, formerly Continental Automotive Systems. Mickles, defense shine in Matadors' Homecoming rout of Austin-Crockett (Seguin) - Senior quarterback Jhalen Mickles showed no signs of rust in his healthy return to Seguin's starting lineup after missing the better part of two games with an injury. Mickles tossed three touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the first half alone to help Seguin dismantle District 12-5A-Division I foe AustinCrockett 50-0 in Friday's Homecoming game at Matador Stadium. The Matadors used a 12-yard strike from Mickles to Clark Ullrich, a two-yard quarterback sneak by Mickles, and a 44-yard catch by Tristan Moreno on a deep Mickles throw up the right sideline to build a 21-0 lead before the first quarter concluded. Mickles powered over the goal line from a yard out after completing a 34-yard pass to Moreno early in the second quarter. Garrett Stiles, who made his first three PAT kicks, had to take off and run with a low snap and didn't make it to the end zone, leaving Seguin's lead at 27-0. Stiles drilled a 39-yard field goal at the 1:54 mark of the second quarter to put the Mats in front 30-0. Mickles launched a deep pass up the right sideline from Seguin's side of midfield with 43 seconds left in the half, and Dravan McKnight sprinted under it for a 52-yard touchdown. Dillion Gutierrez took the PAT snap on a trick play, rolled to his right, and hit McKnight in the end zone for the two-point converstion to give the Matadors a 38-0 halftime cushion. Marques Washington scored his 10th rushing touchdown of the season from eight yards out to cap the opening drive of the third quarter, and sophomore running-back Jerivan Contreras rumbled in from 14 yards out for his first varsity score late in the fourth quarter. The Matadors took a knee on the conversion try after both touchdowns in the second half. Seguin head coach Travis Bush lauded Mickles and his receivers for stretching the field vertically and putting a fundamentally sound Crockett defense in a bind. "We made some explosive plays, and Jhalen made some big-time throws," Bush said. "It's good to have him back and see him playing that well, and you see guys like Tristan

They kept playing hard and kept running so that allowed us to get an early lead on them, and that football, but very proud of our defense today for then kind of put them away there with the opening keeping them out of the end zone." The defensive line drive of the second half. After a rocky start in non-dis- combination of Chance Brewster, Chanse Hernandez, trict losses to Antonian, New Braunfels, and Central Josiah Luna, and Ian Box wreaked havoc in the Cougars' Catholic, the Seguin defense has only allowed one touchdown in eight quarters against district competi- backfield and applied relentless pressure to quarterback tion. "We knew it was going to be a ish it off," Bush said of the shutout effort. Crockett (2-3) dropped to 1-1 in the 12-5A-Division I ranks. Dripping Springs and Austin-LBJ are also 2-0 in district after lopsided wins on Friday. "We're excited to be one of the three teams 2-0 in district right now, and we'll keep working to be 1-0 next week," Bush said. Seguin visits Austin-Travis at Burger Stadium this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage set for 7:00.

Health Advocates Predict 250-Million Obese Children Worldwide By 2030 (London, UK) -- Health advocates say there will be 250-million obese children worldwide by 2030. That's the prediction in the first Childhood Obesity Atlas, compiled by the World Obesity Federation. That 250-million figure is up from 150-million obese children. The federation studied children in 191 countries to learn whether countries are making progress toward meeting the World Health Organization goal of no rise in child obesity from 2010 to 2025. wooded and you will have broken limbs every time the wind blows. Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center had an interesting hackberry pro and con article on their website. Two experts debated the merits of the hackberry. The tree is very tolerant of growing conditions and has a large native range. It is important for wildlife because the berries are eaten by birds and its leaves are the larval food of butterflies and moths. On the other hand, they have heavy infestations of mistletoe, every seed sprouts and you will find them in all your beds, and falling limbs and trees cause constant clean up. (I can agree with this. I have spent much money the last couple of years having broken trees cut down and removed.)

Q: How do I tell the difference between soapberry trees and chinaberry trees? I have one or the other on my property and can’t tell the difference. I certainly don’t want chinaberry because they Q: I would like to plant some ornamental grasses in my landare so invasive. scape. What do you suggest? A: The monthly e-newsletter from Texasinvasives.org had a nice article on the chinaberry tree in August. It gave a way to tell the difference between the two trees when they both have fruit. Chinaberry fruit remains opaque during the winter. Soapberry fruit are translucent. During the growing season, chinaberry leaves have a lacy look and a musky odor with lavender flowers in the spring. Soapberry flowers are cream colored. Chinaberry are certainly invasive and are found in many of our Seguin parks. The tree was introduced in the middle 1800s from Asia. The Texas Department of Agriculture will not let the tree be sold, distributed or imported.

Q: My hackberry trees are starting to split and fall. How old do they get in this area? A: I found one source that said 20 to 30 years. However, remember that they are weak

A: My very favorite grass, particularly this time of year, is Gulf or coastal muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris) which is a Texas native plant. It is a short grass, one and a half to two feet tall, and has pink fuzzy seed heads in the fall. It is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines through it. I check my plants and the ones in the Park West pollinator garden frequently to see if they are in bloom yet. Another favorite grass, also a Texas native, is inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). This grows to two feet and has ornamental seed heads during the summer and fall. The foliage sort of looks like very small bamboo, but doesn’t have that nasty bamboo-like habit of taking over the world. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
