National Night Out effort takes on crime, hunger in Seguin short (notice) but she's like no, we can do this, we can do it and she did it. It was real nice to see the community come together," said Nichols. The Seguin PD on Friday spent the afternoon boxing the food items for transfer to the Christian Cupboard. Among those lending a hand and showing her appreciation to the Seguin PD was Christan Cupboard Volunteer Sandy Clopton. Clopton says this latest donation of food couldn't have come at a better time. "The cupboard is bare. The last two weeks, there was very little on the shelves to give out. I wished there would be some organizations that could organize some drives for the summer months. That would really help becuase we really get low from maybe February on to let's say now, October. I went there on Wednesday to help hand out food. There wasn't very much to hand out so our clients would get a lot less food," said Clopton. Chief Nichols says plans have already begun to help collect even more food during next year's National Night Out. He says, who knows, it might even turn into some type of friendly neighbrhood competition.
The Seguin Police Department applauds residents for supporting the local food pantry during this year’s National Night Out block parties. Christian Cupboard volunteers stop by the PD to pick up the donations collected at various neighborhoods around Seguin. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Neighbors this past National Night Out not only took a bite out of crime but they took a bite out of hunger. A total of 500 pounds of non-perishable food was collected by residnets participating in Tuesday's National Night Out block parties. The event brought neighborhoods together for a night of safety and crime prevention. Leading the effort for the city of Seguin was the Seguin Police Department. Also, assisting the PD at the block parties was the Seguin Fire/EMS Department. Police Chief Terry Nichols says after a recent visit to the Christian Cupboard, Seguin's local food pantry, he thought of the idea to also include a food drive - giving folks a chance
to really help one another. Nichols says because of the short notice, he thought the idea should be implented next year. However he says thanks to Officer Tanya Brown, the crime prevention and public information officer for the Seguin PD, he was convinced that if there was a ever a community who could answer the last minute request, it would definitely be Seguin. "I saw the need. I'm in the Leadership Seguin program, right now, and one of the places we visited was the Christian Cupboard on our first class and we saw the need so I got to thinking about National Night Out and what a unique opportunity we have to get the community to help us and give them the help they need. So, a great turnout, and Tanya Brown being able to put this off. I doubted it because it was too

"I certainly would like to make this a staple -- that we do a food fundraiser for the Christian Cupboard annually as part of National Night Out and make this grow and grow and grow. I think that will be huge for us becuase it's the community giving back to the community. Sometimes people want to give back but they don't know how. We'll here's a way they can. We can give food to the needy and it's a mechanism for the police department to be engaged as well and we do it all together," said Nichols. A total of 26 neighborhoods this year gathered togther for a National Night Out block party. That number is an increase from last year. Those wishing to donate to the Christian Cupboard may drop off donations Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The Cupboard is also open during the same hours on the first and third Saturdays. A 24/7 donation box is also located on the building's north side. The food pantry is located at 516 N. Camp St.

(Seguin) -- There are still a couple of ways you can get involved in this year's Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. First, parade entries are still be sought for Friday's annual tradition in downtown Seguin. Chairperson Gail Damerau says Friday is a school holiday giving groups and organizations more of an opportunity to join in on the fun. "We'll take some more in the next couple of days primarily if we can get all that information by Wednesday that would be great and they can submit that online or in our fair catalog, there's an actual form but they can go to the website at gcfair.org and electronically send in their entry and get it to us and the parade will be Friday. We will start our line-up at 8 o'clock, our judging at 8:30 and our parade starts at 10 a.m. and we'll start that parade on College Street and we will enter on Austin Street and we'll follow that parade route all the way down to the Seguin Events Center Complex and end at the fairgrounds," said Damerau. Float entries are encouraged to be decorated with the county fair and fall season in mind. Some of the categories include heavy equipment, horse, politician, business and car and truck. Texas Lutheran forces five turnovers, returns three for TDs in 38-27 win at No. 6 HSU (Abilene) - The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs forced five turnovers and returned three of those for touchdowns Saturday in a 38-27 road upset of sixth-ranked HardinSimmons
be made without everyone doing their job. It allows us to cut loose as individuals." TLU survived the nation's rushing leader, Jaquan Hemphill, going for 304 yards on 32 carries and scoring three times. Hemphill gave HSU the early lead with a 97-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The scoring play was the longest in HSU history.
The victory, just TLU's second win at Shelton Stadium in 12 tries, moved the Bulldogs to 3-1 overall and to 30 in the American Southwest Conference. The Bulldogs won for the third time in the series with the Cowboys. HSU leads the series 19-3.
Facing 3rd-and-14 from deep in their own territory, and trailing 31-27 with under seven minutes to play, Wooten tried to find Hemphill on a screen pass in the left flat. Worley, TLU's right defensive end, used his 6foot-4 frame to grab the pass intended for Hemphill and ran untouched into the endzone to restore the Bulldogs' 11-point advantage.
HSU fell to 4-1 overall and to 3-1 in the ASC. The three defensive touchdowns for TLU came on: a 58-yard interception return by freshman safety Daniel Enriquez, a 39-yard fumble recovery by senior defensive end Manny Longoria (Geronimo/Navarro), and a 25-yard interception return by junior defensive end Jackson Worley. "Three defensive touchdowns, that is just amazing," said Carl Gustafson, TLU's third-year head coach. "I don't know that I have seen a game in the last 10 years in which a defense has scored three touchdowns. (The defense) really played well. Our hats off to HardinSimmons. They kept battling back. It was a game until there were zeros left on the clock." "I'm just really proud. I can't tell you how proud I am of how hard our kids played. They stayed with things. They didn't panic. They were inspirational to watch. This is my 35th year, and this was one of the special games, by a special group of young men. They have the resolve. They have the leadership. They have the character. When good guys do well, it gives me hope." A fourth TLU touchdown after an HSU turnover came four plays after the first of Enriquez's two interceptions against the Cowboys. Later in the half, with HSU trying to get in position for

TLU sacked HSU quarterbacks five times for 21 yards and registered eight tackles for 31 yards in losses. Bulldog linebacker Derek Dunn, the reigning ASC Defensive Player of the Week, had 17 tackles, two sacks for 11 yards, and 2.5 tackles for 13 yards. Linebacker Sam Guzman tallied 11 tackles, and free safety James Bell had an interception to go along with his eight total tackles. Austin Mathews rushed for two scores. His 30-yard touchdown run near the end of the third quarter came on a 4th-and-2 play. Deaths Once they met, their lives were inextricably entwined, with each supporting the other through numerous fellowships, career changes, and cross-country moves. The couple moved to Washington D.C. in 2010 when Adrian began as a Knauss Fellow with the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs. It was then that Andrew began to transition from IT work to expand his photography skills and begin his career as a professional photographer. They returned to Texas, settling in Taylor while Adrian completed her Ph.D. dissertation, and Andrew joined AzulOx Visuals as a partner and principal photographer. His love for photography and teaching others to appreciate and capture the natural world around them blossomed. In particular, Andrew’s self-taught photography skills and acumen led him to become an expert in photographing the night sky. During this time, Andrew also partnered to form Minerva Work Solutions, where he put his skills and passions to use to champion the strategic application of scientific principles to achieve organizational and team success for non-profits and other worthwhile causes. Adrian completed her Ph.D. at George Mason University in Environmental Science and Public Policy in 2017, and the couple soon moved to San Diego where she was a PostDoctoral Scholar at UC Santa Cruz Institute of Marine Sciences with the NOAA Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California.
Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Fritz
Andrew Aaron Fritz Andrew Aaron Fritz, age 40 of Sacramento, California, and formerly of Taylor and Seguin, Texas, passed away on September 2, 2019, along with his wife Adrian Danielle Dahood-Fritz. Andrew was born on Oct.6, 1978 in Austin, Texas, to Linda (Johns) Fritz and Atlee Fritz. Andrew grew up in Seguin. He had many interests to which he gave his passion and energy. He was a lifelong animal lover. His love of the outdoors was fostered by his years in the Boy Scouts where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16. During his early years, he also became involved in Tae Kwon Do, and competed in the National Junior Olympics, and computer science and band during high school. When he was 10 the family bought their first computer, and another passion was born. Andrew graduated from Seguin High School in 1996, and then attended Texas Lutheran University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from TLU in 2000 with a BS in computer Science and a BA in Mathematics. It was at TLU that his passion for scuba diving was born. This led him to cave dive in places such as Florida and Cozumel, and also in the South Pacific at Truk Lagoon into sunken Japanese WWII ships. Andrew also discovered Toyota Supras during this time, which enticed him toward another hobby, race car building and racing, and mechanics. Andrew began his career as a software engineer in Austin, TX., and eventually moved to Houston to enroll in graduate school at the University of Houston where he worked in the Physics department. In 2005 he received his Master of Science from University of Houston where he specialized in information security solutions. Andrew met his wife, Adrian, while taking swing dance lessons in Houston in 2008. They were married January 2, 2010 in Galveston.
Adrian and Andrew enjoyed exploring California and the Pacific coast together, and hosting friends and family to enjoy their new surroundings as well. It was in San Diego that Andrew began to more broadly explore the American West, and to expand his photography skill and workshop offerings, making multiple crosscountry trips in his truck to continue teaching photography in Austin. Andrew and Adrian moved to Sacramento in April of this year, where Adrian began her position with the State of California as the Senior Scientist/Policy Advisor for the Ocean Protection Council working with the State’s Marine Protected Areas program. Andrew was expanding his workshop offerings, with teaching/learning excursions planned for the coming months across the US and the world. Andrew was a craftsman, woodworker, conservationist, artist, and scholar. Whatever Andrew set his mind to, he did so with a passion seldom seen. Andrew and Adrian spent their lives together working to hone their skills and knowledge to mentor, teach, and care for others, and to apply their collective acumen and passion to improve the world around them for future generations. They will be deeply missed. Andrew and Adrian left this world together doing something they both loved – appreciating and documenting the natural world around them. Andrew is preceded in death by his grandparents Atlee and Ruby Fritz and Alvis and Gettys Johns, and his beloved cats D.C. and Big Boy. He is survived by his parents, Atlee and Linda Fritz of Seguin, and his sister, Angela Elizabeth Fritz of Rosenberg, TX., along with cats Inara and Takhira, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a myriad of friends, students, and colleagues from across the nation and world. A celebration of life service honoring Andrew and Adrian will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Auditorium in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, 510 Fleming Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC) at First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas, 78155. Private interment will follow at a later date at San Geronimo Cemetery.
Adrian D. DahoodFritz, PhD Adrian D. Dahood-Fritz, PhD was born in 1979 in New Jersey and grew up in Princeton Junction. At an early age she developed an interest in marine mammals. She graduated in 1997 from Choate Rosemary Hall and coxed a 4-man boat to win a Youth Invitational Championship title in Cincinnati in 1997 for Choate; she continued her education at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated 4 years later with a BS in Zoology and a second BS in Fisheries Science. She went on to pursue a master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries at Texas A & M awarded in 2009 and earned her PhD in 2017 from George Mason University. Along the way, Adrian developed science skills focused on marine mammals and habitats at organizations that included the National Science Foundation. She studied dusky dolphins in Kaikoura, New Zealand for her Master’s and made seven trips to Antarctica including an extended winter voyage to gather information on krill and other small sea creatures at the bottom of the food chain. Concurrently, she developed an interest in policies related to worldwide regulation of fisheries and Polar habitats that resulted in her PhD being awarded by George Mason University in December 2017. She was actively interested in all things related to Antarctica including research, Polar policies and habitats. Sharing of knowledge, time and energy as well as scientific curiosity were hallmarks of Adrian’s entire life. Adrian met Andrew Fritz while in Texas and the couple married in 2010 in Galveston. They had separately developed interests in photography, swing dancing, cooking and teaching which interests continued and grew during their marriage. She and her husband perished in a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 34 individuals on a scuba diving trip to the Channel Islands in 2019. Adrian is survived by her father, Michael Dahood, and her brother M. Eliot Dahood. A celebration of life service honoring Andrew and Adrian will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Auditorium in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, 510 Fleming Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155 with Rev. Cathe Evins and Rev. Msgr. Dennis Darilek officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC) at First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas, 78155. Attorneys general from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and other states are fighting the opioid maker's move to get a U.S. bankruptcy judge to shield the company from more than 26hundred lawsuits seeking billions of dollars in damages. The lawsuits allege that Purdue and the Sackler family contributed to the opioid epidemic that's killed nearly 400-thousand people since 1999 by aggressively marketing Oxycontin while downplaying the drug's risks. Purdue filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month after reaching a ten-billion-dollar deal that would resolve most of the cases.
