TLU celebrating largest capital campaign in school history
(Lubbock) -- A $1 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a Texas Tech student from Seguin who faces murder for killing a campus police officer exactly two years ago. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the wife of slain Tech Texas police officer, Carmen East, accuses Hollis "Reid" Alvin Daniels III of negligence and gross negligence in the Oct. 9, 2017, shooting death of Floyd East Jr. East is seeking damages that "include funeral expenses, mental anguish, loss of advice and counsel and loss of companionship." The lawsuit states, "the plaintiff would show that on October 9, 2017, Defendant Hollis Alvin Daniels III acted in a negligent and grossly negligent manner by failing to act as an ordinary reasonable person and acting with disregard towards human life." Daniels, who remains at the Lubbock County Detention Center, reportedly shot and killed East with a .45 caliber handgun. See LAWSUIT, page 3

After launching a multi million dollar fundraising initiative in 2011, Texas Lutheran University today is announcing that it not only has reached its $75 million goal but it has done so one year ahead of schedule.
cials say the Office of Development engaged with alumni and friends who could help invest in the Ignite. Inspire. Impact. campaign -- a campaign that had grown to a goal of $75 million for facilities, academic programs, endowments, and annual scholarships. Renee Rehfeld, TLU vice president for development and alumni relations, says the university is grateful to everyone who supported what is the largest campaign for the university.

$75 million goal wraps up, one year early TLU, continued from page 1

“We’ll get those little devils!”
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M
"At the time that we started it, it actually started with a $55 million goal and as we got into the campaign, we just saw more momentum building and people were giving to different things across campus whether it was buildings or scholarships or programs and so, we ended up increasing the goal twice which is totally unheard of usually for a university but we ended up increasing it to $65 million and then we increased it to $75 million with the intention of ending it in May of 2020," said RehfeldRehfeld says as TLU got closer to that May deadline and as the leadership change was on the horizon, the donations continued to come in. "Then when we kicked off the campaign in September, it still was sort of in our heads that it would be 2020 but then, Dr. Dorsey announced his retirement and typically campaigns end with the retirement of the current president and so for our group, we just knew that we had to make sure that we ended it successfully and so we did. We just got more people engaged with the university, interested in the what was going on out here, seeing all the great programs, seeing our amazing students and really putting the story out there in a bigger way and so as we got closer and closer to that May date, we were wondering whether we were going to actually be able to kick it over the $75 million amount but about a week there, we had a commitment come in that put us over it so we were very excited and we are very excited for the university. It is just something that puts us in a different league now," said Rehfeld.

Rehfeld. Although TLU is celebrating the success of this $75 million campaign goal, Rehfeld says a new vision is always just around the corner.

Rehfeld says this campaign was all about transformation. She says all you have to do is look around and see the results of these dollars. "So it started with the athletic complex, getting all the sports plan on campus with the new stadium and then there were some master's programs that were added that some of the money went to and then it was the nursing program which has been an amazing blessing to the university and we've been very blessed with contributions coming from individuals as well as foundations and so forth and just the quality of the program building and so that is a program that continues to affect the students that are there currently but it's going to affect the students that come in the future as well as all the projects that we do and it actually culminated then with the building of the Weston Center for Performing

Arts in terms of the last building project that we did," said Rehfeld. Helping to reach that figure of $75.6 million was exactly 7,162 donors. Rehfeld says the contributions did not only go to buildings, but it also went directly to the students and to the programs that are vital to TLU. "But in addition to that, we were also raising money for scholarships and the way the scholarships work is that not only are you benefiting today's students but you are benefiting students for generations to come because the core purpose stays at the university for in perpetuity so it was all about making a huge impact to this campus through new buildings, new programs but then also being able to help current students and future students to have an even bigger and better experience than what they ever had before," said
"Basically in the development world, we always joke that you end one campaign and you start another one and most of the time, the silent phase of the campaign no one is really in the know about but there's definitely projects that we are working on and putting in front of people. We are always raising money for scholarships because we have so many of our kids with financial need so that will never end so we are looking forward to and as Dr. Cottrell gets situated in the presidency and goes through a strategic planning process, we will sort of see what initiatives rise to the top that we will go full force with for like if there is any building projects that are included or whether we stick with a more endowment driven scholarship campaign but definitely there will be another campaign coming up," said Rehfeld. Again in all $75.6 million was raised as part of this campaign at TLU: Alumni: $19.4 Million; Friends: $33.1 Million; Foundations & Corporations: $13.2 Million; Trusts: $663,000; Churches: $984,000 Estates: $8.25 Million; Investing in People: $20 Million; Investing in Places: $21.5 Million; Investing in Programs: $24.8 Million; Annual Giving: $9.3 Million Current President Dr. Debbie Cottrell adds that the campaign's completion is a historic moment and shows how alumni and donors both stepped up to support TLU in a truly impactful way.

Home arts items due today for Guadalupe County Fair Home arts division to feature a number of items during county fair very important for the fair association.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Here's your chance to earn a blue ribbon at this year's Guadalupe County Fair. Today is the arrival day for all home arts division entries. All entries will be accepted today at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds between 2 and 8 p.m. This year's Chairman Barbara Wright says the home arts division is one of the many traditional events for the fair and helps promote the many talented residents that live in Guadalupe County. "We're accepting, crafts, antiques, art, canned goods, baked goods, quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing projects, handwork (projects) cross-stitch and things like that and photography. Cut flowers can come in Thursday morning from 8 to 9 a.m. and then we also have potted flowers. They have to come in today on Wednesday," said Wright. Participation in the home arts contest has been
Wright says all a person needs to do is just look around and take inventory of the talents that exist within their homes. "It's interesting to see what people bring and a lot of times, their stuff is a whole lot better than what they think it is. We have some ages where we have adults in the categories and we also have youth. Stuff the kids make -- we are tickled to see what the kids bring down. They have an imagination that won't quit that they have a lot of different things that they can do," said Wright.
second or third place, it's a blue ribbon quality, a red ribbon quality or a white ribbon quality and the best one of them in each group or depending how many in a group, they get a tri-color," said Wright. Everyone who enters something into the fair today will be able to come back on Thursday to see the judge's final decision. Wright says for every item entered, the exhibitor will also receive one free pass for entry into this year's county fair.
Committee chairs in the past say they have seen this part of the fair dwindle over the years but Wright believes that everyone has an item that can be entered.
All entries today should be entered at the Exhibition Hall at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Again, cut flowers may be turned in Thursday morning. After judging, all entries will remain on display through the end of the fair. Items must be picked up on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m.
"We don't give awards. We strictly give ribbons. You have red, white and blue and it's not a first,

Before coming to Lubbock, East served in the Texas State Guard in El Paso.
A police report states that Daniels was taken to the police station after drugs were found in his room, but he was not handcuffed. It stated that East was working on booking paperwork for Daniels.
He left behind not only his wife but also two daughters.
Another officer in the room said he walked out, and shortly thereafter, he heard a loud bang. He returned and found that East had been shot. The officer's body camera was said to be missing, and his pistol was still in his holster. Police investigators believe Daniels stole the gun from a friend's home. Officer East was relatively new to the department when the incident happened.

Vital Statistics Once they met, their lives were inextricably entwined, with each supporting the other through numerous fellowships, career changes, and cross-country moves. The couple moved to Washington D.C. in 2010 when Adrian began as a Knauss Fellow with the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs. It was then that Andrew began to transition from IT work to expand his photography skills and begin his career as a professional photographer. They returned to Texas, settling in Taylor while Adrian completed her Ph.D. dissertation, and Andrew joined AzulOx Visuals as a partner and principal photographer. His love for photography and teaching others to appreciate and capture the natural world around them blossomed. In particular, Andrew’s self-taught photography skills and acumen led him to become an expert in photographing the night sky. During this time, Andrew also partnered to form Minerva Work Solutions, where he put his skills and passions to use to champion the strategic application of scientific principles to achieve organizational and team success for non-profits and other worthwhile causes. Adrian completed her Ph.D. at George Mason University in Environmental Science and Public Policy in 2017, and the couple soon moved to San Diego where she was a PostDoctoral Scholar at UC Santa Cruz Institute of Marine Sciences with the NOAA Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California.
Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Fritz
Andrew Aaron Fritz Andrew Aaron Fritz, age 40 of Sacramento, California, and formerly of Taylor and Seguin, Texas, passed away on September 2, 2019, along with his wife Adrian Danielle Dahood-Fritz. Andrew was born on Oct.6, 1978 in Austin, Texas, to Linda (Johns) Fritz and Atlee Fritz. Andrew grew up in Seguin. He had many interests to which he gave his passion and energy. He was a lifelong animal lover. His love of the outdoors was fostered by his years in the Boy Scouts where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16. During his early years, he also became involved in Tae Kwon Do, and competed in the National Junior Olympics, and computer science and band during high school. When he was 10 the family bought their first computer, and another passion was born. Andrew graduated from Seguin High School in 1996, and then attended Texas Lutheran University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from TLU in 2000 with a BS in computer Science and a BA in Mathematics. It was at TLU that his passion for scuba diving was born. This led him to cave dive in places such as Florida and Cozumel, and also in the South Pacific at Truk Lagoon into sunken Japanese WWII ships. Andrew also discovered Toyota Supras during this time, which enticed him toward another hobby, race car building and racing, and mechanics. Andrew began his career as a software engineer in Austin, TX., and eventually moved to Houston to enroll in graduate school at the University of Houston where he worked in the Physics department. In 2005 he received his Master of Science from University of Houston where he specialized in information security solutions. Andrew met his wife, Adrian, while taking swing dance lessons in Houston in 2008. They were married January 2, 2010 in Galveston.
Adrian and Andrew enjoyed exploring California and the Pacific coast together, and hosting friends and family to enjoy their new surroundings as well. It was in San Diego that Andrew began to more broadly explore the American West, and to expand his photography skill and workshop offerings, making multiple crosscountry trips in his truck to continue teaching photography in Austin. Andrew and Adrian moved to Sacramento in April of this year, where Adrian began her position with the State of California as the Senior Scientist/Policy Advisor for the Ocean Protection Council working with the State’s Marine Protected Areas program. Andrew was expanding his workshop offerings, with teaching/learning excursions planned for the coming months across the US and the world. Andrew was a craftsman, woodworker, conservationist, artist, and scholar. Whatever Andrew set his mind to, he did so with a passion seldom seen. Andrew and Adrian spent their lives together working to hone their skills and knowledge to mentor, teach, and care for others, and to apply their collective acumen and passion to improve the world around them for future generations. They will be deeply missed. Andrew and Adrian left this world together doing something they both loved – appreciating and documenting the natural world around them. Andrew is preceded in death by his grandparents Atlee and Ruby Fritz and Alvis and Gettys Johns, and his beloved cats D.C. and Big Boy. He is survived by his parents, Atlee and Linda Fritz of Seguin, and his sister, Angela Elizabeth Fritz of Rosenberg, TX., along with cats Inara and Takhira, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a myriad of friends, students, and colleagues from across the nation and world. A celebration of life service honoring Andrew and Adrian will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Auditorium in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, 510 Fleming Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC) at First United Methodist Church, 710 N. Austin, Seguin, Texas, 78155. Private interment will follow at a later date at San Geronimo Cemetery.
Adrian D. DahoodFritz, PhD Adrian D. Dahood-Fritz, PhD was born in 1979 in New Jersey and grew up in Princeton Junction. At an early age she developed an interest in marine mammals. She graduated in 1997 from Choate Rosemary Hall and coxed a 4-man boat to win a Youth Invitational Championship title in Cincinnati in 1997 for Choate; she continued her education at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated 4 years later with a BS in Zoology and a second BS in Fisheries Science. She went on to pursue a master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries at Texas A & M awarded in 2009 and earned her PhD in 2017 from George Mason University. Along the way, Adrian developed science skills focused on marine mammals and habitats at organizations that included the National Science Foundation. She studied dusky dolphins in Kaikoura, New Zealand for her Master’s and made seven trips to Antarctica including an extended winter voyage to gather information on krill and other small sea creatures at the bottom of the food chain. Concurrently, she developed an interest in policies related to worldwide regulation of fisheries and Polar habitats that resulted in her PhD being awarded by George Mason University in December 2017. She was actively interested in all things related to Antarctica including research, Polar policies and habitats. Sharing of knowledge, time and energy as well as scientific curiosity were hallmarks of Adrian’s entire life. Adrian met Andrew Fritz while in Texas and the couple married in 2010 in Galveston. They had separately developed interests in photography, swing dancing, cooking and teaching which interests continued and grew during their marriage. She and her husband perished in a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 34 individuals on a scuba diving trip to the Channel Islands in 2019. Adrian is survived by her father, Michael Dahood, and her brother M. Eliot Dahood. A celebration of life service honoring Andrew and Adrian will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Auditorium in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, 510 Fleming Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155 with Rev. Researchers Say E-Cigarettes Cause Lung Cancer (New York, NY) -- A new research study found that exposure to nicotine from e-cigarette vapor causes lung cancer. According to a study done at New York University, vaping causes lung cancer and potentially bladder cancer in mice, concluding it is likely "very harmful" to humans as well. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and is the first to definitely link cancer to vaping. The amount of smoke the mice were exposed to was similar to a person who's vaped for about three to six years.
MA Reports First Vape Related Death (Boston, MA) -- Health officials in Massachusetts are reporting the state's first vaping-related death. The Massachusetts Department of Health describes the victim as a woman in her 60s. There have been dozens of reports of possible lung illnesses caused by e-cigarettes in the state, though only nine cases have been confirmed. Governor Charlie Baker has declared a public health emergency in the state over vaping-related illness. Over 18 deaths have been reported across the country from vaping and over a
thousand other cases of vaping-related lung illnesses.
First Lady Visits Drug Enforcement Administration (Springfield, VA) -- First Lady Melania Trump is calling on e-cigarette manufacturers to stop marketing to children. During a visit to the Drug Enforcement Administration, the First Lady said she will continue to address addiction in her Be Best initiative as long as it affects children. Mrs. Trump encouraged children who struggle with addiction to admit it, talk about it and seek help. Mrs. Trump's visit marks the first time a first lady has paid a visit to the DEA.
Kroger To Stop Selling All Vaping Products (Cincinnati, OH) -- Kroger will no longer sell e-cigarettes at its grocery stores and gas stations. The company updated its policy today citing regulatory concerns. It will finish out the current inventory and then be done with all vaping products. This comes as the CDC investigates more than a thousand lung illnesses nationwide. At least 18 deaths have been reported in 15 states.
