Navarro Panthers get revenge for playoff loss while Marion falls in Hill Country on Friday night
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers got revenge for a playoff loss to Lago Vista last year, knocking off the Vikings 27-13 in Geronimo on Friday night in the District 13-4A opener for both teams.
Landun Taylor, Nicholas Schwarzlose, Diego Chapa and Antwoin Mebane all had rushing touchdowns from the Panther slot-t attack. Schwarzlose scored on a one-yard run in the final seconds of the second quarter to tie the game at 13 going into halftime.
Gabriel Rangel had an interception for the Navarro defense in the second half to thwart a
Lago Vista drive and preserve the Panthers’ twoscore lead late in the fourth quarter. Navarro kept the Vikings off the scoreboard in the final 24 minutes as the Panthers limited Lago Vista to nearly 20 points below their season average coming into the game.
The Panthers will next play at Jarrell. The Cougars dropped their district opener 49-13 to Wimberley this past Friday.
This Friday night’s game between Navarro and Jarrell kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Cougar Field in Jarrell.
(Blanco) -- And the Marion Bulldogs fell Friday night in the Hill Country, 48-7 to the Blanco Panthers in a District 13-3A match-up.
Quarterback Kade Pape and running back Christian Sanchez hooked up for a 30-yard touchdown for the lone Bulldog score on the night. Marion is 0-2 in district. The Panthers are 2-1.
The Bulldogs return home to Veterans Stadium this coming Friday to host Llano. The Yellowjackets are 2-1 in district play after falling to first place and 3-0 Randolph, 24-7 this past Friday. This coming Friday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. in Marion.

Kaiser Permanente Strike To End Without A Deal
(Oakland, CA) -- The largest healthcare strike in U.S. history is ending without a contract deal. Kaiser Permanente employees began returning to work Saturday at hospitals in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. A Kaiser spokesperson has confirmed that another bargaining session will be held October 12th. A union representative says wages and staffing levels remain the key sticking points.
WHO: Dengue Could Spread To U.S.
(Geneva) -- Parts of the U.S. are being told to watch out for Dengue [[ den-GAY ]] Fever. The chief scientist with the World Health Organization said Thursday that the mosquito-borne illness will “take off” this decade in Africa, southern Europe and the southern U.S. as warmer temperatures create the conditions for the infection to spread. Dengue kills about 20-thousand people each year in Asia and Latin America. Bangladesh is currently experiencing its worst-ever outbreak, with over a thousand deaths. Most people who get Dengue do not have symptoms, but those who do can experience fever, muscle spasms and severe joint pain.
Heat Deaths Climb In Maricopa County
(Phoenix, AZ) -- The number of heat-associated deaths in Arizona’s Maricopa County this year is now over 300. The county health department’s latest report shows the number now stands at 331. That’s an increase of 36 from the week before, while more than 270 deaths are still under investigation. The final number is expected to be record-setting, beating out last year’s number of 425. At this time in 2022, there were 284 confirmed heat-related deaths and under 170 still being investigated.

(Wingate, NC) -- Yelling at your kids could be causing long-term damage. New research out of Wingate University and University College London found that verbal abuse can have lasting repercussions on a child’s mental and physical health. The study, published this week in the journal Child Abuse and Neglect, looked at data from over 45 years. The most common manifestations in children later on in life included depression, aggression, substance use and other behavioral disorders.

The City of Seguin will have its Jr. Squirrels Youth Disc Golf Clinic & Tournament beginning with check-in at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Starcke Park East Disc Golf Course/Patricia K.
