Job Fair giving exoffenders a second chance

2nd Chance Job Fair scheduled for Wednesday

(Seguin) -- More than a half of million dollars in drugs was seized Friday morning following a traffic stop on Interstate 10.

Seguin Police officials say the incident, involving a GMC pick-up truck, was reported at 11:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Interstate 10 East.

During the traffic stop, officers conducted a search of the vehicle and located more than 13 kilos of cocaine, a large amount of US currency, and a firearm. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is valued at more than $550,000.

Arrested was Homar Lopez, 35, of Hidalgo. He was booked into the

Guadalupe County Jail and charged with manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

In the meantime, Seguin police officials remind the public that it can help prevent and solve other drug crimes occurring in and around Seguin.

Anyone with information regarding drug trafficking is asked to contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 877-403-TIPS.

Tips and calls directly to Crime Stoppers are anonymous. Information that leads to an arrest or charges being filed, could result in a cash reward.

This case remains under investigation.

(Seguin) – Finding a job can already be a tough and stressful thing. So, now imagine how even more challenging it is for those who have been incarcerated and are needing a second chance. Well, that second chance will come their way this Wednesday. The New Braunfels Food Bank will be partnering with Workforce Solutions Alamo and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for its 2nd Chance Job Fair.

Organizers say the job fair will feature over 25 employers who are actively hiring and who have friendly policies for job seekers with a background.

Organizers say the job fair helps those who have been in jail and works to reestablish them in the community.

The event will also include free professional head shots, community resources and a chance to win a MacBook Pro.

The job fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the New Braunfels Food Bank located at 1620 S. Seguin Ave.

Fair parade set to roll through Downtown Seguin

(Seguin) -- With the start of fall, everyone’s favorite fall traditions are returning to Seguin – from football games to festivals. The 140th Guadalupe County Fair, one of the most popular fall traditions, is set to return to the Seguin Events Complex on October 12 –15.

The fair includes agricultural exhibits, a carnival, rodeo, shopping, food, and musical performances across the five days. But not all the fun occurs at the Events Complex, the Fair Parade runs through downtown Seguin on Friday, October 13 at 10:00 a.m.

The parade will feature floats, marching bands, horse riders, tractors, and more, all showcasing their agricultural and Guadalupe County pride. The parade route

starts at the intersection of North Austin and College Street. The entries will flow through downtown headed south on Austin Street to the Seguin Events Complex.

All businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals are encouraged to enter their own parade float. The application for the parade can be found on the fair’s web site, gcfair.org, under applications below the fair info dropdown menu. The application fee for a parade entry is $40.00, but nonprofits with a 501©3 are exempt from the entry fee. Applications need to be submitted before September 30.

The fair association has a few rules and guidelines for entries to consider. Parade judging starts at 8:30 a.m., so floats need to be in

line before then. Winners will be announced from the review stand in Central Park. An adult must supervise all children participating in the parade. Entries with live animals must have a pooper-scooper. More information on the rules can be found on the application.

Pumpkin decorating contest at Fair open to ALL ages

(Seguin) – You’ve got two more days to get carving. Entries are again being accepted for this year’s 18th Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest.

All pumpkin entries will be arriving Wednesday and Thursday for the Guadalupe County Fair contest.

Chairperson Pam Younger says folks of all ages are encouraged to enter their pumpkins. Divisions include children, adults, and seniors. Due to safety, carved pumpkins will not be accepted for those ages 4 to 6.

“They are displayed throughout the entire fair right at the very front of the Coliseum. Our booth is the easiest to find so bring your pumpkins even if you don’t think you are going to win and if you want to win a prize, you better bring your game,” said Younger.

Younger says pumpkins will be judged in four categories.

“Categories are creativity, originality, technicality and pumpkinality. But you don’t enter into a category, but we judge those categories. So, you just enter your pumpkin and then our judges will give

you a score,” said Younger.

Younger says the top entries in each division will be awarded prizes. Prizes include cash, passes, gift cards, gift bags and gift baskets.

Pumpkins should arrive at the Seguin Coliseum from 3 to 7 p.m. both Wednesday and Thursday.

Judging is scheduled for Friday morning followed by the award ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo will be held Thursday through Sunday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. A schedule of events is available at gcfair.org.

Navarro Panthers get revenge for playoff loss while Marion falls in Hill Country on Friday night

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers got revenge for a playoff loss to Lago Vista last year, knocking off the Vikings 27-13 in Geronimo on Friday night in the District 13-4A opener for both teams.

Landun Taylor, Nicholas Schwarzlose, Diego Chapa and Antwoin Mebane all had rushing touchdowns from the Panther slot-t attack. Schwarzlose scored on a one-yard run in the final seconds of the second quarter to tie the game at 13 going into halftime.

Gabriel Rangel had an interception for the Navarro defense in the second half to thwart a

Lago Vista drive and preserve the Panthers’ twoscore lead late in the fourth quarter. Navarro kept the Vikings off the scoreboard in the final 24 minutes as the Panthers limited Lago Vista to nearly 20 points below their season average coming into the game.

The Panthers will next play at Jarrell. The Cougars dropped their district opener 49-13 to Wimberley this past Friday.

This Friday night’s game between Navarro and Jarrell kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Cougar Field in Jarrell.

(Blanco) -- And the Marion Bulldogs fell Friday night in the Hill Country, 48-7 to the Blanco Panthers in a District 13-3A match-up.

Quarterback Kade Pape and running back Christian Sanchez hooked up for a 30-yard touchdown for the lone Bulldog score on the night. Marion is 0-2 in district. The Panthers are 2-1.

The Bulldogs return home to Veterans Stadium this coming Friday to host Llano. The Yellowjackets are 2-1 in district play after falling to first place and 3-0 Randolph, 24-7 this past Friday. This coming Friday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. in Marion.

Kaiser Permanente Strike To End Without A Deal

(Oakland, CA) -- The largest healthcare strike in U.S. history is ending without a contract deal. Kaiser Permanente employees began returning to work Saturday at hospitals in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. A Kaiser spokesperson has confirmed that another bargaining session will be held October 12th. A union representative says wages and staffing levels remain the key sticking points.

WHO: Dengue Could Spread To U.S.

(Geneva) -- Parts of the U.S. are being told to watch out for Dengue [[ den-GAY ]] Fever. The chief scientist with the World Health Organization said Thursday that the mosquito-borne illness will “take off” this decade in Africa, southern Europe and the southern U.S. as warmer temperatures create the conditions for the infection to spread. Dengue kills about 20-thousand people each year in Asia and Latin America. Bangladesh is currently experiencing its worst-ever outbreak, with over a thousand deaths. Most people who get Dengue do not have symptoms, but those who do can experience fever, muscle spasms and severe joint pain.

Heat Deaths Climb In Maricopa County

(Phoenix, AZ) -- The number of heat-associated deaths in Arizona’s Maricopa County this year is now over 300. The county health department’s latest report shows the number now stands at 331. That’s an increase of 36 from the week before, while more than 270 deaths are still under investigation. The final number is expected to be record-setting, beating out last year’s number of 425. At this time in 2022, there were 284 confirmed heat-related deaths and under 170 still being investigated.

(Wingate, NC) -- Yelling at your kids could be causing long-term damage. New research out of Wingate University and University College London found that verbal abuse can have lasting repercussions on a child’s mental and physical health. The study, published this week in the journal Child Abuse and Neglect, looked at data from over 45 years. The most common manifestations in children later on in life included depression, aggression, substance use and other behavioral disorders.

4th Annual Kiki Camarena Run & Scavenger Hunt

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines will have the 4thAnnual Kiki Camarena Run & Scavenger Hunt from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the American Legion located at 618 E. Kingsbury St. You can join in on the fun either on a motorcycle for the run or in a vehicle for the scavenger hunt. The fee is $20 per driver and $10 for each passenger. The 4th Annual De Mano a Mano Open Air Artisan Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Plataforma Hidalgo on the grounds of Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center, located at 921 W. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
