Families invited to rope in all the fun Lake Dunlap may be saved at this year's Guadalupe County Fair By Darren Dunn By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Family fun continues these next three days during the annual Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. The fair runs through Sunday at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds. Friday's schedule kicks off with the annual fair parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel south on Austin Street. Boats and lakes residents have been invited to serve as this year's parade marshals. The residents are being recognized for their ongoing efforts to stop the draining of the area hydro electric lakes by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. Parade Chairman Gail Damerau says the fair association is excited about everyone who has chosen to be a part of this year's event.

Finding new friends at the fair Sawyer Hall, a first grader at Rodriguez Elementary School, enjoys a sneak peak of the animals at this year's Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. Hall was among the thousands of area elementary age students who were invited to tour the fair and this year’s Baby Barnyard.

"Entry wise, we've got a little bit of everything. We've got several different horse groups, 4H clubs. We do have the bands entered and playing so all three Marion, Navarro and Seguin bands will be in our parade and we just want to encourage everybody to come out and watch it. That's an important part. Come and watch it. We work hard to try to get all these entries and get everybody in it and we announce downtown at the fountain at the square so that's a good spot to head to and listen but you can line up and watch the parade anywhere from College Street on down to the fairgrounds and we'll have all different kinds of entries -- old cars, horses, a little bit of everything this year," said Damerau. Fair gates open at 11 a.m. See FAIR, page 19

(Seguin) -- There's reason for hope when it comes to the future of Lake Dunlap. The Preserve Lake Dunlap Association (PLDA) has announced that it has reached an agreement with GBRA that will allow the failed dam to be replaced.

Working together was crucial to coming up with the plan.

PLDA Board Member Doug Harrison says there are still many details to be worked out, but he says they are pleased to announce the agreement.

Harrison says GBRA is going to continue to own the dams, but the taxing district will be a key part of helping to provide the necessary funding to cover the dam replacement costs.

"The deal we announced is a partnership. It's a proposed partnership. There's a lot of heavy lifting. (There's) a lot to do, (and) a lot of details that need to be ironed out, but it's a partnership between GBRA and a tax district that is yet to be created of all the waterfront property owners around Lake Dunlap. The partnership would be that the GBRA would help us to obtain the debt. They would obtain the debt. We would enter into a contract with the new taxing district to pay the debt service on that debt to rebuild the dam, and then because that district is going to be paying the debt service -- GBRA would donate hydroelectric revenues

from the Lake Dunlap dam back into the district, which will help fund the district going into the future. So that we not only can fix the dam today, (but also make sure) it's here for the next 100 years, 500 hundred years. (Ensuring that) it has some perpetual ongoing funds to make sure it's around for future generations," said Harrison.

"The dam and the hydro electric facilities are all theirs and it will remain theirs. The proposed WCID, which is a Water Control Improvement District, is a quasi-government taxing district, which would be created really for the sole purpose of raising funds to pay for the current rebuild of the dam, and acquiring a sinking fund for future long term capital rebuilds or maintenance of the dam. But everything else, as far as ownership and control of the dam, would still lie with GBRA," said Harrison. See LAKE, page 9

Seguin Fire Department to host open house By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin Fire/EMS Department will lay out the welcome mat for this year's annual open house.

6:10am & 12:20pm Monday-Friday 6:35 Saturdays

Skinner says in the midst of a very busy weekend in Seguin, he believes families won't be disappointed about stopping by the local fire house. He says there's enough fun to go around.

The open house is scheduled for Saturday at the Central Fire Station location at 110 Elm St. Fire Chief Dale Skinner says families are invited to stop by and tour the facility. "This will be our annual open house event that we've been doing for the last several years giving the community an opportunity to come in and see a working fire station and meet with and visit with the firefighters and learn more about fire safety of course. The whole reason for our open house is in celebration and recognition of National Fire Prevention Week which is actually this week. So, we are closing out Fire Prevention Week with our open house which I mentioned we will have various fire prevention activities. We will have Sparky the Fire Dog there. We will have hot dogs a n d some chips and face painting and a lot of other activities. We will be demonstrating some of our extrication tools, the jaws of life and

all of our equipment will be on display as well as the fire station itself so they can see a living, breathing, working fire station and interact with the fire fighters," said Skinner.

"The other thing I would add about it is I know there's a lot of things going on in town this weekend. We can take a walk over to the fire station from the pumpkin patch or we can walk over to the pumpkin patch from the fire station and then go down and see a rodeo. It will be a good time," said Skinner. The fire department's open house will also include free games, puppet shows, popcorn and snow cones. The Seguin Fire Open House will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is free.

By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- Get ready to see pink during Saturday's Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo. The "Are You Tough Enough to Wear Pink?" campaign returns as a main event during Saturday's night's rodeo schedule. Guadalupe County Fair Association members say the nationally recognized effort works to promote breast cancer awareness and fundraising for local communities. Event Chairman Sarah Louque says the fair association will again honor breast cancer survivors by joining the fight against the illness. "Everybody that wears pink to the rodeo that night, we will count those people and we will donate $1 back off

of everyone of those rodeo attendants, people that come that night back to Bras for a Cause so that money is staying in Guadalupe County and it helps cancer patients. So, wear pink to the rodeo Saturday night," said Louque. Cancer survivors are especially encouraged to be a part of the audience. They say Saturday's rodeo will be a tribute to these tough individuals.

TLU hosts Louisiana College in Family & Alumni Weekend game, Saturday's ASC clash to air on KWED (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran looks to maintain its share of first place in the American Southwest Conference and stretch its winning streak to four games Saturday when Louisiana College visits Bulldog Stadium in TLU's Alumni and Family Weekend game. Third-year head coach Carl Gustafson's 3-1 Bulldogs (3-0 ASC) received votes but sit just outside the Top 25 in both the D3football.com and AFCA national rankings after knocking off then-No. 6 (now No. 17/ 20) Hardin Simmons 38-27 in Abilene last week. Louisiana College snapped a two-game skid with a 27-21 win over Howard Payne last Saturday in Brownwood, improving to 2-2 in the ASC and 2-3 overall in head coach Justin Charles' third season. The Wildcats enjoyed their most productive offensive outing of the season against HPU, but they enter Saturday averaging just 13.8 points per game. Quarterback Sal Palermo (673 yds., 5 TD, 2 Int.) threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns last week filling in for injured starter Landon LaLonde (557 yds., 4 TD, 4 Int.), who is listed at the top of the depth chart this week. Whoever Louisiana College places behind the center will have to deal with a TLU defense that has forced 11 turnovers over the past two games and produced three defensive touchdowns against Hardin Simmons.

Texas Lutheran leads the American Southwest Conference in takeaways (13) and turnover margin (+9) heading into Saturday's matchup with Freshman safety Daniel Enriquez, the ASC DefenLouisiana College.

sive Player of the Week and D3football.com Team of the Week honoree, ran the second of his two interceptions back 58 yards for a score in Abilene. Pre-season All-American defensive end Manny Longoria returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown, and fellow bookend Jackson Worley plucked a pass out of the air for a 25-yard pick-six. With 13 takeaways and four lost turnovers on the season, the Bulldogs lead the ASC in turnover margin at plus-9. Senior linebacker Derek Dunn recorded 17 tackles and two sacks in the win over Hardin Simmons. Dunn rankes third in the ASC in tackles (39), second in sackes (4), and leads the conference in tackles-for-loss (8.5). Texas Lutheran looks to gear up its rushing attack against a Louisiana College defense that has allowed more total yards (498.8) than any team in the ASC. The Bulldogs feature four of the top ten individual rushers in the conference: Austin Matthews (4th, 274 yds., 3 TD), quarterback Wade Freeman (5th, 259 yds., 3 TD), Chris Monroe (9th, 216 yds., 2 TD), and Ian Leslie (10th, 210 yds.). Saturday's kickoff at Bulldog Stadium is slated for 6 p.m. The audio broadcast will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com., with streaming video available at tlubulldogs.com. Falcons hope to bounce back in home tilt vs. Ovilla Academy (Seguin) - The 4-2 Lifegate Christian School six-man football team looks to start a new winning streak Friday when 2-4 Ovilla Christian Academy makes the drive south from Red Oak to visit Falcon Field in Seguin.

Shellnut still enters the Ovilla Christian game with an impressive season under his belt. The junior spread-back has piled up 940 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns while throwing for 502 yards and seven scores with only one interception 57 passing attempts.

Bastrop-Tribe ended the Falcons' run of four consecutive wins last Friday in a 58-8 mercy rule final, with Quinten Shellnut scoring Lifegate's only touchdown.

Ovilla Christian has won two straight against teams from North Texas after dropping its first four games of the season. The Eagles outscored Campbell 66-34 on

Sept. 20 and outlasted Arlington-St. Paul's Prep 52-45 two weeks ago before the bye week. Lifegate head coach John Stout looks for his team win a matchup of contrasting physical attributes. "These are bigger boys than what we've got, but we've got speed," Stout said. "They don't have that much speed. We've got to run the ball, and

we've got to get around there quick, get away from them, and just attack them. Same thing on defense. We've got to attack their offense and get through the line quick, and be up in there and disrupt like we should have been doing last week." Friday's kickoff at Falcon Field is set for 7 p.m. A complete interview with Stout can be heard during the Falcon Report between 6:45 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Marion visits Jourdanton in battle of 15-3A-Division I Navarro opens district slate at home heavyweights, Friday game to air on KWED against dangerous Yellow Jackets (Jourdanton) - Marion's District 15-3A-Division I title defense continues Friday with a road clash against the Jourdanton team that was picked by Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine to unseat the Bulldogs in 2019. Marion is 4-2 in Ryne Miller's second season as head coach with a 20 district record and a three-game winning streak on the line after cruising past San Antonio-Cole 306 last Friday. With all 11 offensive starters and seven on the defensive side of the ball returning from a 2018 team that went 9-3 and finished second in the district behind Marion, Jourdanton carries a 5-0 record into Friday under sixth-year head coach Darrell Andrus after blasting Karnes City 55-7 in last week's 153A-Division I opener. The head coach's son, junior quarterback Cole Andrus, has been the backbone of an explosive and balanced Jourdanton offense. Andrus has completed 73 percent of his passes for 1,407 yards and 20 touchdowns to seven different receivers with only one interception and has also scored twice on the ground.

"Coach Andrus is doing a great job, and his son's a player - he's a heck of a quarterback," Miller said. "For us, we'll just try to get some pressure on him. That's our plan. Make sure he gets a little pressure and try to force some quick throws. But also, they've got a great run game, too. They've got a young running-back out there, so we've got to make sure we stop the run, too, and for our guys, just make sure they get lined up right, in great fits, and try to create some turnovers." As Miller alludes to, the Indians average 243.8 rushing yards per game, 7.1 per carry, and have churned out 16 touchdowns on the ground this season. Multiple backs have shared the workload, with siblings Aidan Borth, a junior (356 yds., 8.9 per carry, 7 TD) and Collin Borth (269 yds., 7.1 per carry, 2 TD), a senior, leading the charge. Jarel Lilly (28 rec., 433 yds., 5 TD) has been Andrus' most prolific receiver. Marion counters with dual-threat senior quarterback Zach Goodwin, who enters Friday completing 60 percent of his passes for 1,180 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Goodwin is also team's second leading rusher with 272 yards and four touchdowns.

Runnig-back Ray Rayos is the top (Geronimo) - The five-week race for the Bulldog in that department with District 13-4A-Division I championship 336 yards and one score. and four available playoff seeds begins Friday when the 5-0 Navarro Panthers Goodwin's top targets include Jacob Devora (26 rec., 337 yds., 5 play host to the 4-1 Llano Yellow Jackets TD), Jayden Williams (18 rec., 317 at Erwin-Lee Field. yds., 2 TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt Both teams come off the bye week with (12 rec., 211 yds., 3 TD). momentum after closing non-district play The Marion defense turned in one with impressive wins. of its best performances of the season by holding Cole to six points Second-year head coach Rod Blount's despite the Cougars receiving mul- Panthers pulled away late to defeat Gidtiple scoring opportunities after dings 46-32. Defensive lineman Corbin Flores re- coach Matt Green, bounced back from a turned a fumble for a touchdown Week 4 loss to Lago Vista to handle San Angelo-Lake View 41-21. against the Cougars. Jourdanton boasts six defensive starters who garnered All-District accolades in 2018. Senior defensive end Derek Jenschke is the headliner in that group after a 10sack junior season, and a player the Marion offensive line will have to account for as Goodwin looks to bounce back from last week's three-interception outing and deliver the ball accurately downfield at Indian Stadium. Friday's kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Jourdanton. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:45 with the Navarro and Lifegate coaches' shows.

The Yellow Jackets have been equally proficient through the air and on the ground. Senior quarterback Braxton Vickers has thrown for 1,239 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions, with junior Quincy Prince (23 rec., 429 yds., 5 TD) serving as his most productive receiver. Llano also churns out 188 rushing yards per game. Senior Donaven Arellano (556 yds., 5.7 yds., 8 TD) has been the backfield workhorse. A Navarro defense allowing just 18.4 points per game looks to disrupt the Yellow Jackets' offensive rhythm. "We've got to get on them, put them in

long yardage situations, but they love to throw the ball deep," Blount said. "We've got to make sure our secondary is there, and everybody's got to take care of their responsibility, because if you give them one thing, they're going to take another. They're very balanced, and lots of weapons." As is customary against spread teams that play at a quick tempo, the Panthers will try to control the clock with their typically dominant Slot-T rushing attack. Navarro averaged 404.8 rushing yards per game and 8.7 per carry in non-district play. Senior fullback Euler Deleon (801 yds., 12.1 avg., 13 TD) leads the charge, and the Panthers hope to have All-District speedster Johnny Alegria healthy and back in the lineup for district play after missing significant time over the first five weeks of the season. Special teams could factor in the outcome as well. The afforementioned Prince and Logan Duggar have returned kickoffs for Llano touchdowns. Myles McCord ran a kick back 83 yards for a score in the non-district win over Giddings. Friday's district opener at Erwin-Lee Field is slated to kick off at 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Blount can be heard during the Panther Report on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com at 6:45.

PLDA announces agreement with GBRA to rebuild dam LAKE, continued from page 1 While a deal has been reached in principle, Harrison says there are still a lot questions left to be answered. One of the more important questions will be, how much will it costs to replace the dam? Harrison says they've seen some early figures, but he says more work needs to be done to get a more accurate picture of those costs. "GBRA has hired an engineering firm, that is one of the top ones in the country doing this kind of work named Black & Veatch, that is doing the engineering design report for GBRA and that report is not done yet. It's in process. It's a couple of million dollars worth of work, and it will be 30 percent complete this month...and we will see that before the end of the month, and then 100 percent complete in March of 2020. So, we are not even going to know the real final, final report from the engineering design guys until March. Before they even started the report, the ballpark estimate is about $24 million for the Lake Dunlap dam, which includes...a pretty nice contingency, some safety factors built in. (That is supposed) to be a conservative estimate, so we are pretty confident in that number, or really hope even less," said Harrison. Harrison says while they work to answer all of those questions, they also recognize that they will need to also work to convince those who reside along Lake Dunlap to support the creation of the taxing district. He says they will have to gain the support of the majority of those homeowners during an election tentatively scheduled for May of next year. Lake Dunlap is the first of the hydroelectric lakes in this area to announce its partnership, but other lakes, like McQueeney, Placid, Meadow and Gonzales are also expected to follow their lead. Harrison says Dunlap will have one additional hurdle that the other lakes will not have to follow. "For the Lake Dunlap (taxing) district, it's a little unique, because Lake Dunlap crosses two counties. So unlike what will happen on Lake McQueeney or Lake Placid -- if they follow suit, they fall in one county -- the election will be in May, (and)...we have to pass in Comal County and pass in Guadalupe County to give the district taxing authority. So in May, we are going to put some propositions on the ballot that people, who own waterfront property on Lake Dunlap and that's their voter residence address. So, if you are a voter and own property in that district, you can vote in May assuming it is approved, which the support we saw (Wednesday) night -- we just did a straw poll of the audience and it looked like pretty close to 100 percent support. Assuming it passes, they would give us taxing authority, bonding authority and elect the original slate of five directors. The directors have to be potential members of the district and we will put five directors up that will manage the district going forward," said Harrison. Those who can participate in the election will be clearly spelled out prior to the vote. Harrison again stresses that only people, who have their primary residence on Lake Dunlap, will be allowed to vote. "My property is in the district, but my principal residence is on the western side of Comal County, and so I am hugely affected by it, but I do not get to vote in this election. People who live in Houston, (or) who live in San Antonio and have a lake house out there, are affected, but they will not get to vote in favor or against it, either way. So, it's an unusual situation for some of those property owners like me," said Harrison. The dam failure at Lake Dunlap happened just before Memorial Day weekend. It happened at a time when there was little activity on the water, and there were no injuries. That's a relatively short

amount of time from then to now, when you consider all of the things that have transpired during that period. Harrison says everyone has worked really hard to try to move as quickly as possible to find a way to replace the dam. "We have a collection of really smart and conveniently retired people around Lake Dunlap, and some are still working and still giving us tons of time and hours. As of today, it's 150 days since the gate fell. So, in 150 days, we've come a long way and the plan that we announced (Wednesday) night, that's not even Plan A or B. We are down to Plan C or D or something. We've tried a whole lot of options. GBRA -- we are wearing them out -- 'okay, that won't work, what about this?' So, they've been very open and very willing to work with us," said Harrison. Harrison says there's been a great deal of time and effort that's gone into deal. He thinks that work is paying off in a big way, and that this will be a good deal for both GBRA and for property owners along the lake. He says this will be a long term arrangement, which will protect the future of Lake Dunlap. "If we create a taxing district, we become a governmental agency and they're a quasi-governmental agency -- they are an agency of the state of Texas. It's not just a potential business deal between two business entities, where as long as you agree to do it, we have to meet some very specific guidelines. At some point, GBRA or the tax district has to go out and ask for public debt money, and so it's been a lot of learning to do in 150 days and a lot of effort from the volunteer members of the PLDA, the Preserve Lake Dunlap Association and from the GBRA staff and the other people that are helping us out here. We've run ourselves ragged chasing different options but I think we have a good one here," said Harrison. The dam failure at Lake Dunlap was the second spillgate failure experienced by GBRA at one of its hydroelectric dams. The spillgate at Lake Wood failed more than three years, and then there was the unexpected catastrophic failure that occurred at Lake Dunlap in May of this year. GBRA officials immediately said all of the hydroelectric dams were old and unsafe. The river authority was looking for ways to keep people safe, and one of the ways it could do that was by draining all of the other lakes. The reaction to that plan was mostly anger and angst, but the lake associations and GBRA never stopped working behind the scenes. Harrison says he knows how upset people have been, but he says that he believes this announcement can offer a sense of hope to those who utilize the water. "I don't want to be a foolish optimist. I'm optimistic about getting there, but I want to be realistic about the amount of work that it's going to take to finish this. But a lot of people are just worried, because they worry. It's human nature. It's what we do. We worry about stuff. But when we talked to (people) that very first day - I wasn't even on the board at that point -- but when J. Harmon and our president called me and said 'hey, can you help?' We talked about it and I said, look, it's going to be tough but if we all work on it, we'll do this one way or another. We'll find a way and get this done.' It's a lot of money for a homeowner. It's $24 million. In city, county, (and) state terms, it's only $24 million. There's a way we can get this done, and we will get this done and I didn't know but I knew that from day one. We'll get this done. J. (Harmon) and I have tried pushed forth with this confidence to tell people that but until we had a reasonable plan, a reasonably credible plan to present to them, it was hard to give them a lot of confidence. People just looked outside their window everyday and saw a river where there used to be a lake," said Harrison.

PLDA's announcement with GBRA does provide a roadmap for other lake associations going forward. Harrison says he knows all of the other lake associations are also working with GBRA to come up with similar plans. He says Dunlap's agreement will be a little bit different based on some of the hydroelectric revenue that can be generated on that lake by GBRA. "Dunlap has the benefit of generating more hydro-electricity than the other five lakes. Of the six lakes, we are 16 percent of the cost of maintenance of the hydro facilities because we are one-sixths, but we are a third of the revenue. Lake Dunlap just has better production capacity than some of the other lakes do. So, we have a little bit of an advantage there, but each lake is different. Lake McQueeney has less hydroelectric production, but they've got nearly double the property value surrounding the lake, so at the same tax rate that we put out, they can raise twice the amount of money on an annual fund. So, each lake will be a little different. But as far as a basic road map, I hope that what we are doing is something that all of the other lakes can follow," said Harrison. There are still a number of moving parts to this agreement, but Harrison says they would hope to start construction next summer. He says that would be a best case scenario, which would allow them to begin as soon as possible. "It means we have to pass the election in May and by the time the election passes, we have to have already done a lot of pre-work on beyond getting the engineering design report, that will finish in March. We would have already had to start picking out, who the construction contractor is, getting bids in from them, getting them to do all their preliminary design work, and being ready to start the construction process. GBRA is committed to helping us do that starting right now," said Harrison. With so many unanswered questions, Harrison says there will come a time relatively soon where they will have to provide more concrete details about the pathway forward. He says the engineering report will go a long way towards providing that crucial information, especially the important details about how much money will actually be required to cover the debt payments for a new dam. "The only numbers that we've been able to give out so far are our best guesses. Before we go to ask for a vote in May, we have to have hard numbers. You are not allowed to put a taxing initiative on the ballot and say 'give me the authority to tax you, but I don't know how much -- unlimited taxation.' You can't do that, which is good. You don't want people to be able to do that. We have to know hard numbers before the May election, and we'll have another big town hall in March where we will tell everybody what those final numbers are which means we have a pretty short fuse with all the holidays in the middle, but we have to get through our negotiations with GBRA, get all the i's dotted and t's crossed and say, here's exactly what this is going to look like so that we can go to the voters starting in March and saying 'okay, here is what this is actually going to look like so they have something real to consider in saying should we vote for this or not in May," said Harrison. Harrison says there's a ton work still to be done, but they are feeling very optimistic about their chances of getting this done. He also went out of his way to compliment the support and cooperation that they have received from folks at GBRA. He says they've been forthright, honest and hardworking through this entire process.

Vital Statistics supporting the other through numerous fellowships, career changes, and cross-country moves. The couple moved to Washington D.C. in 2010 when Adrian began as a Knauss Fellow with the National Science Foundation in the Office of Polar Programs. It was then that Andrew began to transition from IT work to expand his photography skills and begin his career as a professional photographer. They returned to Texas, settling in Taylor while Adrian completed her Ph.D. dissertation, and Andrew joined AzulOx Visuals as a partner and principal photographer. His love for photography and teaching others to appreciate and capture the natural world around them blossomed. In particular, Andrew’s self-taught photography skills and acumen led him to become an expert in photographing the night sky. During this time, Andrew also partnered to form Minerva Work Solutions, where he put his skills and passions to use to champion the strategic application of scientific principles to achieve organizational and team success for non-profits and other worthwhile causes. Adrian completed her Ph.D. at George Mason University in Environmental Science and Public Policy in 2017, and the couple soon moved to San Diego where she was a Post-Doctoral Scholar at UC Santa Cruz Institute of Marine Sciences with the NOAA Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, California.

Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Fritz

Andrew Aaron Fritz Andrew Aaron Fritz, age 40 of Sacramento, California, and formerly of Taylor and Seguin, Texas, passed away on September 2, 2019, along with his wife Adrian Danielle Dahood-Fritz. Andrew was born on Oct.6, 1978 in Austin, Texas, to Linda (Johns) Fritz and Atlee Fritz. Andrew grew up in Seguin. He had many interests to which he gave his passion and energy. He was a lifelong animal lover. His love of the outdoors was fostered by his years in the Boy Scouts where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16. During his early years, he also became involved in Tae Kwon Do, and competed in the National Junior Olympics, and computer science and band during high school. When he was 10 the family bought their first computer, and another passion was born. Andrew graduated from Seguin High School in 1996, and then attended Texas Lutheran University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from TLU in 2000 with a BS in computer Science and a BA in Mathematics. It was at TLU that his passion for scuba diving was born. This led him to cave dive in places such as Florida and Cozumel, and also in the South Pacific at Truk Lagoon into sunken Japanese WWII ships. Andrew also discovered Toyota Supras during this time, which enticed him toward another hobby, race car building and racing, and mechanics. Andrew began his career as a software engineer in Austin, TX., and eventually moved to Houston to enroll in graduate school at the University of Houston where he worked in the Physics department. In 2005 he received his Master of Science from University of Houston where he specialized in information security solutions. Andrew met his wife, Adrian, while taking swing dance lessons in Houston in 2008. They were married January 2, 2010 in Galveston. Once they met, their lives were inextricably entwined, with each

Adrian and Andrew enjoyed exploring California and the Pacific coast together, and hosting friends and family to enjoy their new surroundings as well. It was in San Diego that Andrew began to more broadly explore the American West, and to expand his photography skill and workshop offerings, making multiple crosscountry trips in his truck to continue teaching photography in Austin. Andrew and Adrian moved to Sacramento in April of this year, where Adrian began her position with the State of California as the Senior Scientist/Policy Advisor for the Ocean Protection Council working with the State’s Marine Protected Areas program. Andrew was expanding his workshop offerings, with teaching/learning excursions planned for the coming months across the US and the world. Andrew was a craftsman, woodworker, conservationist, artist, and scholar. Whatever Andrew set his mind to, he did so with a passion seldom seen. Andrew and Adrian spent their lives together working to hone their skills and knowledge to mentor, teach, and care for others, and to apply their collective acumen and passion to improve the world around them for future generations. They will be deeply missed. Andrew and Adrian left this world together doing something they both loved – appreciating and documenting the natural world around them. Andrew is preceded in death by his grandparents Atlee and Ruby Fritz and Alvis and Gettys Johns, and his beloved cats D.C. and Big Boy. He is survived by his parents, Atlee and Linda Fritz of Seguin, and his sister, Angela Elizabeth Fritz of Rosenberg, TX., along with cats Inara and Takhira, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a myriad of friends, students, and colleagues from across the nation and world. A celebration of life service honoring Andrew and Adrian will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the Jackson Auditorium in the Weston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Texas Lutheran University, 510 Fleming Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155. Private interment will follow at a later date at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Adrian D. DahoodFritz, PhD Adrian D. Dahood-Fritz, PhD was born in 1979 in New Jersey and grew up in Princeton Junction. At an early age she developed an interest in marine mammals. She graduated in 1997 from Choate Rosemary Hall and coxed a 4man boat to win a Youth Invitational Championship title in Cincinnati in 1997 for Choate; she continued her education at the University of Washington in Seattle and graduated 4 years later with a BS in Zoology and a second BS in Fisheries Science. She went on to pursue a master’s degree in wildlife and fisheries at Texas A & M awarded in 2009 and earned her PhD in 2017 from George Mason University. Along the way, Adrian developed science skills focused on marine mammals and habitats at organizations that included the National Science Foundation. She studied dusky dolphins in Kaikoura, New Zealand for her Master’s and made seven trips to Antarctica including an extended winter voyage to gather information on krill and other small sea creatures at the bottom of the food chain. Concurrently, she developed an interest in policies related to worldwide regulation of fisheries and Polar habitats that resulted in her PhD being awarded by George Mason University in December 2017. She was actively interested in all things related to Antarctica including research, Polar policies and habitats. Sharing of knowledge, time and energy as well as scientific curiosity were hallmarks of Adrian’s entire life. Adrian met Andrew Fritz while in Texas and the couple married in 2010 in Galveston. They had separately developed interests in photography, swing dancing, cooking and teaching which interests continued and grew during their marriage. She and her husband perished in a tragic fire that claimed the lives of 34 individuals on a scuba diving trip to the Channel Islands in 2019.
