Doors open to new Church’s Texas Chicken

(Seguin) – Folks are happy to see that the bulldozing they saw just a few months ago has resulted in the opening of a brand-new Church’s Chicken. The new building is a whole new look for the Court and Guadalupe Street intersection and reflects the company’s new name, “Church’s Texas Chicken.”

Company President and Franchisee Mike Collins assures families that the name is just part of a rebranding effort and does not bring any changes to the quality of its food.

After operating the restaurant for several years, Collins says the company finally received the opportunity to build a new building at its current site.

“We love the community here. Obviously, Church’s started in San Antonio back in the 50s and we wanted to stay in your community, but we knew that our old building wasn’t really up to par or up to

standards. So, what we were able to do actually was purchase the property from the previous owners and then we were able to brand a whole new building so we could serve the community a lot better. Obviously, it’s a lot bigger, a lot more seating in the dining room but mainly just wanted to continue to be involved in the San Antonio area and the suburbs – serving Church’s food that everybody remembers from when they were kids,” said Collins.

Collins says not only was a rebuild financially more feasible, but it renewed a much-loved staple to the local community.

“When you create a building like this even after you buy the property, you are looking at a multi-milliondollar investment to get it to this point up and running and we were willing to do that based on you as the community and all the support that we have within the community

for sales. Again, wanted to refresh the older image that we had,” said Collins. “I’m just very appreciative. We have the same general manager back here that has been here for years so if you are used to seeing her, come back in and see her. We have some of the same crew. We have the same upper management staff. We want to serve you. We want everybody to be happy and we are super excited just to be back open now and we are going to be here for another 20 years. So, I look forward to you coming in and visiting and getting excellent customer service.”

Sandra Garcia, zone director for the restaurant chain, says when customers stop by, they’ll notice that a lot of their leadership team will be working alongside their great staff.

Garcia says the company is proud of this new location and is ready to show it off.

Home Arts items to begin arriving today for judging

(Seguin) – Your chances of winning a blue ribbon at this year’s 140th Guadalupe County Fair and Rodeo begins today. Today marks the arrival of items for the home arts contest.

Gail Damerau, a member of the fair association board of directors, says items will be accepted on a merit basis and can include a number of items that a person wishes to enter.

“Some of those categories include antiques and vintage items, arts, baked foods, clothing, crafts, fruits and vegetables, quilts, hand needle work, knitting, crocheting, weaving, jams, jellies, preserves, ornamental horticulture, photography, pickles and relishes and we have a whole horticulture division which I want you to make note that I had someone that told me ‘oh no, they couldn’t bring their homemade apple moonshine and enter it into the fair.’ Yes you can. They have a division for that,” said Damerau.

Damerau says special prizes are also available for most entries in the home arts division. Plus, each entry gives you free access to this week’s fair.

Church’s, continued.

“This is amazing. It’s beautiful. Come check it out. This is like the Cadillac of our Church’s completely different than from what you are used to seeing. These are our new colors and our new Church’s here. We are looking forward to being back and ready to serve the city of Seguin,” said Garcia.

Church’s hours in Seguin are Sundays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. The restaurant is located at 404 W. Court St.

“Each entry gets a free gate pass into the grounds. So, that’s a good thing to take advantage of,” said Damerau.

All entries except cut flowers should be entered today between 2 and

KWED Listener Appreciation Night means all the tickets are free. You need to get those free tickets in advance and then make your way over to the fairgrounds on Thursday night,” said Dunn.

AMA Identifies New Medical Condition

(Dallas, TX) -- The American Heart Association is identifying a new medical condition. The condition reflects strong links between obesity, diabetes, and heart and kidney disease, according to an advisory released today. It’s called cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome or CKM for short. The American Heart Association is recognizing CKM in an effort to diagnose and treat people at risk of dying from cardiovascular disease sooner. Evidence shows risk factors like abdominal fat and high blood sugar interacting with each other can have a negative effect on other organs in the body.

Americans’ Views On Newest COVID Booster Split Along Party Lines

(Washington, DC) -- Americans are split along party lines about whether they are getting the latest COVID-19 booster or not. While seven in ten Democrats say they’re likely to get it or already have, fewer than three in ten Republicans say they will. That’s according to an Ipsos poll. As of early October, six-percent of Americans say they’ve already gotten the shot. And two-thirds of all respondents are in the “very likely” or “not at all likely” categories, meaning they feel strongly one way and have made up their minds about it.

California Moves a Step Closer to Single-Payer Medical Care

(Sacramento, CA) -- A bill signed into law over the weekend by California Governor Gavin Newsom takes the state a step closer to single-payer healthcare. The law would potentially let California obtain a waiver to have federal Medicaid and Medicare funds allocated for what could eventually become a universal healthcare system. California’s health secretary will have until June 1st to offer recommendations on crafting the federal waiver.

Gov. Newsom Veto’s Bill That Would Have Decriminalized Magic Mushrooms

(Sacramento, CA) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom is vetoing a bill that would decriminalize the possession and use of so-called “magic mushrooms.” The bill, authored by San Francisco Democratic State Senator Scott Weiner, included a short list of natural psychedelics. Newsom said regulations need to be established for these substances before they can be legalized. Newsom added that those regulations would include dosing information, therapeutic guidelines, rules to prevent exploitation during guided treatments, and medical clearance of no underlying psychoses.
