KWED’s Saturday Topic features details on Seguin ISD’s tax ratification election, the race for Texas House District 44
(Seguin) -- Two key ballots items will be featured this weekend on radio station KWED’s Saturday Topic program.
The news and public affairs program starts with a look at the Seguin ISD’s Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE). Voters will be asked to vote “For” or “Against” Proposition A on the November 5 ballot.
Seguin ISD Chief Financial Office Liz Oaks and Trustee Josh Bright will be part of a discussion about why the tax ratification election is necessary. The district is facing a $4 million deficit and the tax ratification would lower the maintenance and operation tax rate by 1.38 cents to just over $1.10 per $100,000 of taxable property value. Even though it lowers the rate, the district would actually be able to capture more revenue from the state -- maximizing that level. School finance is a completed subject and that’s part of the discussion on the Saturday Topic. The pair will also discuss the potential challenges that lie ahead if the VATRE is not
Fair, continued.
Music on Sunday will feature Pivo & Polka from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Gates officially close at 6 p.m.
Each day of the fair includes a large carnival and various food booths. The PRCA Rodeo also continues Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Rodeo tickets at the grounds are
successful. The lost revenue could impact the district’s ability to offer raises to its teachers and put some nonessential programs in jeopardy. Those details are all included in part one of the program.
Segments two and three on the Saturday Topic focus on the candidates seeking the District 44 seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Democratic Candidate Eric Norman and Republican Alan Schoolcraft are both vying for the position. Each candidate will be given a chance to discuss their qualifications and their vision for Texas. The program will also feature discussion of several key issues important to voters in Texas and across District 44, which includes both Guadalupe and Gonzales counties.
The Saturday Topic gets started at 8 a.m. Saturday morning on AM 1580 KWED. The station can be livestreamed online at seguintoday.com. If you have an Alexa enable device, you can listen to the station by saying -- “Alexa, play KWED radio.”
$10 at the gate and $20 for rodeo. Children 10 and under are free.
Gate admission into the fairgrounds also varies each day. Friday is Student and Military Day. Students with an ID or those with a military ID get in free until 7 p.m. Otherwise, cost is $10. There is no cost for kids 10 and under.
The cost to enter the grounds
throughout the fair is $10 a person. Kids 10 and under are free.
Parking all weekend is $10 a vehicle. Proceeds will benefit the Seguin FFA.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
Seguin, Marion and Navarro football to host district games on Friday
Chris Austin
(Marion) -- The Marion Bulldogs return home on Friday to host District 13-3A rival Randolph at Veterans Stadium.
The Bulldogs and Ro-Hawks were victorious in their first district games last week. Randolph was a 28-14 road winner at IngramMoore. Marion won on the road as well, taking down Luling 43-7.
Filling in for injured Bulldog running back Christian Sanchez, Tanner Otis had a breakout game with 140 yards rushing on 12 carries and four touchdowns last Friday. The junior sprinted 82 yards to the endzone to give Marion their second score of the game four minutes into the second quarter. Junior quarterback Kade Pape was efficient in last week’s win, completing 10 of 14 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller says Pape and Otis stepped up to get the Bulldogs their first district victory.
“Kade’s kind of the general of our offense. He did a great job managing the game and getting the ball to everybody. And with Chris Sanchez banged up a little bit, we had Tanner in our back pocket and we feel like he can be the guy,” Miller said. “So, he did a great job. He is the fastest kid on our team. He’s a 4X100 and 4X200 regional (track) relay qualifier and it showed Friday night.”
Miller added Otis’ teammates were happy to see his success.
“He’s a great kid all-around. I know he was excited. I know his teammates were excited for him. Christian gave him a big hug after the first touchdown. He was fired up for him. To see a kid like that work his tail off, it makes it special and that’s why we do this.”
Friday night’s game between Randolph and Marion kicks off at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in Marion.
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers are back home at ErwinLee Field on Friday night to host Jarrell in District 13-4A play.
The Panthers, 0-2 in district, will look to knock off the Cougars who come in at 2-0. Salado held off Navarro 28-21 in a back-andforth game last Friday in Salado. Jarrell took down La Vernia, 35-16 last week in La Vernia.
The Navarro Panthers and Jarrell Cougars will kick off at 7:30
p.m. on Friday evening at Erwin-Lee in Geronimo.
Earlier this week, Navarro Panther head football coach and athletic director Rod Blount was selected by the Texas High School Coaches Association to serve on the Super Elite Team Selection Committee. Blount called the selection an honor.
“The Texas High School Coaches Association is one of the best organizations out there. They do so much for school districts, athletes and coaches,” Blount said. “To be able to give back and serve on one of the committees is a great honor. I’ll go through the nominations and take our region, region four to the state level and promote those guys against the other three regions and we’ll come up with the best team possible.”
Players who meet the elite team criteria are nominated by their school coaches, then the committee representatives select the best athletes from across the state. Team finalists from all 23 sports in classifications 1A-6A are announced throughout the school year.
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors will host Pieper on Friday in a battle of 2-0 teams in District 13-5A.
Both teams are coming off byes. The Mats won a shootout at Boerne Champion 73-66 two weeks ago, while the Warriors took down Smithson Valley 39-36 at home. Pieper is ranked 8th in the latest Class 5A Division I state poll. Friday night’s game between Seguin and Pieper kicks off at 7 p.m. at Matador Stadium.
We’ll have week seven of High School Football Friday Night on KWED. We’ll kick off our coverage with the Navarro Panther report with coach Rod Blount at 6:15 on Friday evening. The Panther report will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report with coach Ryne Miller.
And then we’ll go to the Matador Stadium for our Seguin football pregame where we’ll have the Matador report with Seguin head coach Craig Dailey inside our pregame show leading up to kickoff between the Pieper Warriors and Seguin Matadors at 7 O’clock on Friday night on AM1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

British Study Shows COVID-19 Boost Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
(Stockport, UK) -- A British study shows COVID-19 can boost your heart attack and stroke risk for three years after an infection. That’s according to scientists at the UK Biobank which studied medical records from 250-thousand people. People who contracted COVID before there were vaccines to reduce the severity of disease were twice as likely to have a major cardiac event as those managed to avoid COVID in the early days. The study also found that the heart attack risk did not diminish over time.
Florida Health Experts Warn Of Contaminated Floodwater
(Miami, FL) -- The Florida Department of Health is warning communities about the dangers of contaminated floodwaters such as those from Hurricane Helene and Milton. The agency says people should stay out of floodwaters to prevent the exposure of flesh-eating bacteria known as Vibrio. It’s commonly found in warm coastal waters. The bacteria can cause a potentially life-threatening infection if it gets in open wounds.
Anti-Obesity Medications Could Become Employer-Covered
(Washington, DC) -- Anti-obesity medications could soon be employer-covered. Employees can learn whether they’ll have it for the coming year during open enrollment. GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have become extremely popular since coming on the market because of how effective they are treating diabetes and obesity. While these medications are often covered for diabetes, they’re not usually covered for weight loss.
Study Finds Certain Arm Positions Cause Inaccurate Blood Pressure Readings
(Baltimore, MD) -- A new study finds that certain arm positions commonly used during blood pressure checks can cause inaccurate readings. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say if you let your arm dangle or even rest in your lap you could get an elevated blood pressure reading and a misdiagnosis of hypertension. So, here’s what they’re recommending: your arm should be supported on a desk or table with the BP cuff at heart level and the cuff should fit. They recommend planting your feet firmly on the floor instead of crossing your legs or ankles. They also say “no talking,” try to relax. Researchers also note that smoking, exercise, caffeine, alcohol and arguments can elevate blood pressure, so they’re big “no-no’s” in the 30 minutes before getting a reading.
