Deadline today for kids’ obstacles course in Seguin
Parks department to host new one day
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Do your kids like a challenge? Today is the deadline to sign up for the first ever Starcke Park Adventure Course. The event is open to kids ages 5 to 12 and will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Max Starcke Park East Walking Trail.
The adventure course features 10 obstacles that test participants’ strength, agility, endurance, and problem-solving skills.
Nikki Berry, of the Seguin Parks and Recreation department, says the goal of this 1.5k or .9-mile obstacle course is to provide a fun and engaging experience for local children. She says obstacle courses are both man-made and nature made.
“It’s walk, run, crawl, skip -- just for fun – just for finishers, no medals or anything like that. It’s just a sense of accomplishment,” said Berry.
Berry says over the last few weeks, the parks office has been unveiling each of the obstacles, one by one, video social media.
“Hopefully, they find our obstacles challenging and fun and
when they get done, they can head over and play some backyard type games with their family and kind of give everybody an opportunity to get out and enjoy some outdoor recreation time,” said Berry.
Beginning at 9 a.m., Berry says participants will take off in waves (30 minutes in length) every 8 minutes.
“We do have a cap. We are sending them in max of waves of 30 and once they register, they’ll receive their wave assignment. There will be a time associated, and a color associated. They will get a wristband in their packet to pick up.
Deadline, pg. 3
Guadalupe County crowns new fair queen, court
(Seguin) – The newest members of royalty have been crowned in Guadalupe County. Leading the royal court for 2024-2025 is Railee Childs – this year’s Guadalupe County Fair Queen.
Childs, a sophomore at Marion High School, says the contest has been an incredible journey – a journey that has taught her to never give up.
“My initial thoughts were very heartfelt. I was very excited because I ran last year and I didn’t get it so I just immediately broke into tears because it meant so much to me,” said Childs.
Childs, 15, is the daughter of Shawn and Kayla Childs. Her sponsor is Confident Glow Sunless Tanning.
Childs involvements include serving as a varsity cheerleader; a member of the student council and FFA.
Sharing the royal court with Childs is 2024 Fair Princess Presley Just. Just is a sophomore at Seguin High School and the daughter of Charles “Chuck” and Crystal Just. Sponsor is Just Readimix.
Also named to this year’s court is Fair Duchess Montana White. White is a senior at Seguin High School and the daughter of Monica and Terry White. Sponsor is Blake Bertling Equipment Rental.
Although she is thrilled about her crown and title, Childs says her royal court is what she believes will make representing Guadalupe County extra special.
Deadline, continued.
So, they will know exactly what time that they are kicking off the event,” said Berry.
Berry says a Buddy Wave has also been included so that all kids can have a chance to participate.
“So, if anyone has someone who wants to participate but they are just not sure if they want to do all the obstacles and they just need that extra support – big brothers, big siters, aunts, uncles, mom, dad, grandma, grandpa can go along with them on the course,” said Berry.
The Adventure Course will consist of three age divisions: 5-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Again, participants can race individually or in a Buddy Wave.
Wave assignments and a corresponding wristband will be emailed to registered participants
“I’m super excited. Actually my cousin is one of the girls that is on the court and Presley is my best friend so this is an amazing group of girls and I’m super excited and I’m also looking forward to representing our amazing Guadalupe County Fair,” said Childs.
Six girls in all competed for this year’s title. The annual Fair Queens contest was held Saturday night at the Seguin Coliseum.
Serving as co-emcees for the contest were Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen and Seguin Radio KWED’s Linda Duncan.
prior to the event.
Plan to wear comfortable, athletic clothing that participants don’t mind getting damaged or stained.
Closed-toe shoes are required. Participants are also highly encouraged to bring water, a towel and sunscreen.
The cost is $15 per participant and will include a commemorative Dri-fit T-shirt.

(Seguin) -- The 8th-ranked Pieper Warriors scored the first seven touchdowns of the night and held off the Seguin Matadors, 56-37 in a battle of 2-0 teams in District 13-5A at Matador Stadium on Friday night.
The Warriors got on the scoreboard first by going 94 yards on the game’s opening drive. Senior quarterback Cayden Keeth capped the drive with a 53-yard run to put Pieper up, 7-0. The Warriors would recover a surprise onside kick after the touchdown and score just seconds later when running back Brady Hopper found the end zone from 16 yards out to make the score, 14-0.

Keeth would throw for three more touchdowns in the second quarter and running back John Hamilton added a rushing score to give the Warriors a 49-0 lead with just under a minute left in the half.
The Matadors got their first score with 10 seconds left in the half when quarterback Corey Dailey found receiver Ayden Avila for an 11yard scoring strike to make the score, 49-6 Pieper at the half. Dailey would continue with the hot hand in the second half as he hit Lane Seidenberger for a pair of scores in the third quarter. The junior signal caller hooked up with receiver Nik Henry for three touchdowns in the
fourth, the final one bringing the Mats within 20 points of the Warriors at the end.

Ready To Start Planning
Health Insurance Premiums Rising, Again
(New York, NY) -- The cost of employer health insurance is up seven-percent for a second straight year, hurting both employers and workers. That’s according to an annual survey released by the nonprofit health policy organization KFF. Consecutive years of increased healthcare costs have added more than three-thousand dollars to the average family premium, which reached about 25-thousand this year. Employers spent about 18-hundred dollars more this year. Many businesses - particularly smaller ones - can’t keep up with the rising costs and workers ultimately endure those higher costs in other ways, like job cuts or smaller raise. Even though inflation has cooled, stress on the sector is expected to continue, at least for another year.
Newsom Vetoes Bill To Extend Hospital Retrofit Deadline
(Sacramento, CA) -- Over half of California’s 410 hospitals may not be able to function after a major earthquake. Many hospitals still need to make improvements to meet an original 2030 retrofit deadline. Still, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a law that would have given hospitals more time to make safety upgrades, but signed a law granting smaller or struggling hospitals up to three more years.
Amazon Plans To Expand Pharmacy Network
(Seattle, WA) -- Amazon is expanding its national pharmacy network next year. The retail giant says it’s using its vast logistics network to improve access to affordable medications. That includes adding 20 new pharmacies to the network in 2025. The company said that by the end of next year, nearly half of Amazon customers will be eligible for same-day delivery of their prescription medication. The pharmacies won’t be locations where customers can walk in, instead they’ll be attached to the company’s same-day delivery sites. Amazon confirmed a few of the new cities that will see the expansion, including Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and San Diego..
News Study Reveals White Children More Effected By Screentime And Social Media
(San Francisco, CA) -- Too much screentime and social media for children can lead to anxiety, depression and behavioral problems. A new study from the University of California - San Francisco reveals these effects were more common among white children compared to Black or Asian children. Dr. Jason Nagata of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital says minority youth may be able to use social media to connect with others that they may not have in their immediate environment. The study followed about 9,500 kids aged 9 to 10 and found that spending a lot of time in front of screens also led to slightly higher levels of inattention and aggression.
