Students to tour Seguin’s Manufacturing industry
(Seguin) -- National Manufacturing Month, celebrated every October, highlights the essential role that manufacturing plays in the global economy and our daily lives.
Manufacturing Month provides an opportunity for U.S. manufacturers to raise awareness of the industry and positively shift perceptions among students, educators, community leaders, and parents.
As part of this celebration, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation, in collaboration with Seguin Independent School District, Navarro Independent School District, Marion Independent School District, and Southwest Preparatory School, will host the Made in Seguin Manufacturing Month Tours this Wednesday, Oct. 16. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the Seguin community has
participated in this initiative, which features industry site tours for high school students.
Seguin is home to nearly 8,400 manufacturing jobs – a concentration over four times the national average. These positions offer significant earning potential, with a median annual wage of $70,428, according to JobsEQ. Advanced manufacturing presents local students with numerous career opportunities right in their hometown. Made in Seguin Day aims to inspire students by providing them with firsthand exposure to innovative, highpaying, and rewarding careers in the manufacturing industry.

Gallup survey now available for Seguin ISD families

(Seguin) – Seguin ISD families will not want to miss their opportunity to share their thoughts about the local school district with a third party.
Emily Allen, the communications director for the Seguin ISD, says families have one more week in which to answer and complete a Family Engagement Survey. She says the survey is designed to express your family’s experience at your child’s respective school.
“Families have received those invitations in their email from the research firm Gallup so you will be looking for that in your email as opposed to something from the district and it’s just a really great opportunity for us to hear from our parents about what they see in the district. There is a series of questions. We would love to hear their honest feedback and we will have surveys coming up later this month with students and with our employees as well,” said Allen.
Allen says it’s important to note that families with multiple children will only be asked to answer questions about one campus.
“You would not get one for each of your kid’s schools. The way that we decided to send these out is that it will go to each family to get one survey, one singular survey and I believe it asks for parents to consider the school that their oldest child attends,” said Allen.
Participation in this survey is voluntary and all
responses will be kept confidential. Allen says Gallup prides itself in processing all data so that individual responses will be reported in the aggregate and will not be linked to one individual.
“The district will not receive any information about who has completed a survey. All of those responses are confidential so that information will go to Gallup. That is our partner in this and that is who you will receive the email from and then they will share information with us as a whole so we will never know which parent, who said what – we will have none of that information,” said Allen.
Again, parents and guardians are reminded to look for an email from Gallup and not from the Seguin ISD. The deadline to complete the short survey is Monday, Oct. 21.

Students from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, Marion ISD, and Southwest Preparatory School will visit twelve different manufacturing facilities in Seguin to observe operations and learn about career
opportunities in their local community. Participating companies include AmeriTex Pipe & Products, Alamo Group, Cargill, Cavco Texas, Central States Manufacturing, CMC Steel Texas, Hexcel Corporation, Niagara Bottling, Rave Gears, Texas State Technical College (TSTC), United Alloy, and Vitesco Technologies.

Parade floats take home top awards

(Seguin) -- Although the gates of the 141st Guadalupe County Fair and PRCA Rodeo have officially closed, the bragging rights earned at this year’s fair parade have only begun.
The top winners in this year’s fair parade have been announced. The parade was held Friday morning in downtown Seguin.
Winning this year’s grand prize trophy for Best Overall Entry was Matador Theatre (SHS).
The Toro Theatre Company (AJB) also earned top honors by walking away with this year’s Grand Prize.

Seguin boys force play-in game; Marion
TLU Blanks Schreiner, 4-0
KERRVILLE, Texas -- In a thorough team victory, Texas Lutheran recorded its fourth shutout of the season on Sunday, shutting out Schreiner for the second time this season, 4-0. Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/Warren), Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy), and Lilly Noblett (San Antonio/Warren) scored goals for the Bulldogs while Simien, Martinez, Callie Brame (San Antonio/ Churchill), and Kelly Wolfe (San Antonio/Churchill) all added assists with Simien tallying a career-high two assists.
TLU (7-4-1, 3-1 SCAC) got out to an early lead in the seventh minute with Simien taking advantage of passes from Brame and Wolfe for her sixth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs would double their lead in quick succession with Klarissa Martinez working a give-and-go with Simien to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Simien and Martinez sit atop the SCAC as coscoring leaders in the conference with six goals each.
The Bulldogs picked up where they left off to start the second half as a pass from Simien and a cross from Martinez set up freshman Lilly Noblett for her fifth goal of the season to increase TLU’s lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute. Noblett leads all SCAC freshmen with five goals and 12 points this season. With the assist, Simien moved into the top ten all-time in program history, tying former teammate
Samantha Martinez with 12 assists in her career.
A Callie Brame corner kick led to the Bulldogs final goal as the corner screamed into the box and found the head of a Schreiner Mountaineer who would head it into the net for an own goal for the final goal of the match. It is Schreiner’s second own goal against the Bulldogs this season.
The Bulldogs fired 18 shots on the afternoon and kept constant pressure on the Schreiner backline. Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) and Charleigh Phipps (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) combined for the shutout. The Bulldogs defense allowed just four shots by the Mountaineers (1-9-1, 0-3 SCAC) with Phipps making the lone required save on the afternoon.

Bethann Walraven Hall was born on December 14, 1947. She went to be with the lord on August 2, 2024. Beth was born in San Angelo, Texas. She grew up loving reading, swimming and arts and crafts. She attended Angelo State University where she met Skip Hall. They married and moved to Seguin and welcomed a son. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Southwest Texas State University. She then taught at Seguin High. During this time, she earned her Master’s Degree and later became head of the English Department. After a while, she and Skip moved to Cleo, right outside of Junction, Texas. She taught at Kerrville Tivy High up to her retirement. Beth loved the holidays and decorating for them. Christmas was here favorite.

She had enough Christmas décor to start a Christmas store. Beth loved being a grandmother to her granddaughter, Remi Hall. Beth is survived by her son Randy and fiancé Jennifer and granddaughter Remi Hall, sister Karen Hudon and partner Danny Glenn, niece Dawn Hooper and husband Mike, daughter Maddie, son Tyler Hooper and his wife Peyton and their son Ryder, brother-in-law Charlie Hall and wife Vicky and their sons Caleb and wife Sara, Nathan and spouse Dre, two great nephews Rowe and Ripp.
Beth is preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Gwendolyn Walraven, her loving husband Skip, brother, Kelly Walraven and Sister Celeste Walraven.

Daniel Gene Strempel, age 88 of Seguin, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 11, 2024. Daniel was born on December 15, 1935 in Seguin, Texas to Christine (Roemisch) and Roland E. Strempel.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Verna Mae Strempel, son, Terry Wayne Strempel, son-in-law, Buddy Bloch and his parents.
Survivors include daughter, Lesa Bloch; grandchildren, Brittney Strempel, Tyler Strempel and wife Amanda, and Zachary Strempel and fiancé, Allison Hensley; great-grandchildren, Stetson Moeller, McKenna Strempel, and Mason Strempel; sister-inlaw, Virginia Cockerham; as well as other loving family members and many friends.
Visitation will begin on Monday, October 14, 2024 at 10 a.m. followed by funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Emanuel Carpenter officiating. Private Interment will be held at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Leissner
James “Jim” Calhoun Leissner, age 87 of Seguin, passed away on October 8, 2024. Jim was born on October 12, 1936 in Houston, Texas to Ouida Virginia (Dodson) and Martin William Leissner.
Jim graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1953. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Texas A & M in 1957 and a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from St. Mary’s University in 1966. He maintained life long friendships with his Spider D Infantry/A & M classmates. They met regularly for reunions with their wives and sometimes just with the guys. Jim was taught how to play bridge by his cousins and aunts as a young adult. When he was in his 50’s he learned to play Skat, a German card game. He traveled domestically and internationally competing in and winning Skat tournaments. He also loved gardening, cooking and most importantly spending time with his family.
Jim is preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Leissner Carlson, son, Nathan Charles Leissner, his parents, his brother, Martin Leissner, Jr. and wife Helen and brother-in-law, Richard Bello.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Joyce Theresa Bonaventure Leissner; his daughters, Blanche Walker and husband Neal, Naomi Williams and husband Tom, and Diane Baines and husband John; grandchildren, Trez Walker, Skyler Walker; and Violet Carlson; sister, Anna Lou Brown and husband Glenn; sister-in-law, Hazel Bello; aunt, Helen Dodson Black; several nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Hurricane Activity Disrupts IV Fluid Supply Chain Nationwide
(Miami, FL) -- The latest barrage of hurricanes to hit the southeast have sparked a nationwide shortage of IV fluids. Hurricane Milton forced the closure of a plant in Daytona Beach which distributes a quarter of the nation’s IV fluids. And Helene damaged a factory near Asheville, North Carolina that produces most of the country’s IV fluid. The President and CEO of the Florida Hospital Association, Mary Mayhew, says hospitals are preserving every drop of IV fluid and supplies are not at a crisis level yet.
Health Officials In California Confirm 4th Human Case Of Bird Flu
(Undated) -- Health officials in California are confirming a fourth human case of bird flu. The four people who tested positive were exposed to infected cows at four separate farms, according to the state Department of Public Health. The department says it was also notified of two additional possible human cases. The risk to the general public remains low, but officials are expecting additional human cases of bird flu to be confirmed.
Report: 6% Of US Adults Have ADHD
(Undated) -- A new study reveals more than 15 and a-half million U.S. adults have ADHD -- and many find it difficult getting the medications they need to treat it. According to a survey conducted by the CDC, six percent of adults have a current diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Stimulants like Ritalin and Adderall are often prescribed to treat ADHD. But over 71 percent reported difficulty getting their ADHD prescriptions filled because their medications were unavailable. While ADHD symptoms typically begin in childhood, more than half of the respondents said they had been diagnosed as adults.
Kaiser Mental Health Workers Strike
(San Diego, CA) -- Nearly 24-hundred unionized mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California will begin an openended strike on October 21st. This comes a year after Kaiser was fined 50 million-dollars for mental health service deficiencies, including understaffing. The strike aims to pressure Kaiser to improve its behavioral health system, which social workers say currently forces patients to wait too long for care. Daily picket lines and rallies will be held across various locations, including Los Angeles and San Diego. The workers, whose contract expired on September 30th, include psychologists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses, and they serve fourpoint-eight million members from San Diego to Bakersfield.
