Boots and Butterflies annual gala set for Thursday
Thriving Hearts Crisis Center to give domestic violence the boot
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Only a few tickets remain for this year’s Boots and Butterflies Annual Gala benefiting the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center.
Thriving Hearts Crisis Center, formerly Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter, is hosting the annual fundraiser this Thursday at the Seguin Coliseum.
Crisis Center CEO Manijeh “MJ” Huereca says the fundraiser is not only an opportunity to showcase the shelter’s role in keeping families safe, but it’s also a chance for the community to see how it, too, can be a part of changing lives.
“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we really strive to make an effort to get the word out there and this event is really a way to highlight how the community can come together to support some of our most vulnerable community members. That’s women, men, children. Domestic violence affects everybody,” said Huereca. Gala, pg. 3
Planting positivity, happiness in Seguin
Petal It Forward campaign in full bloom in Seguin
(Seguin) -- Positivity will be blooming in Seguin this Wednesday as a local flower shop takes part in a national campaign to help make people happy.
As part of the “Petal It Forward” campaign, Dietz Flower Shop employees will be handing out two bouquets of flowers to unsuspecting people around the city on Wednesday.
Jamie Lum, of Dietz Flower Shop, says the goodwill initiative is more than just about free flowers. She says it’s about spreading kindness.
“The Petal It Forward Campaign is just about making someone’s day, truly. Studies have shown that when people receive fresh flowers, it instantly boosts their mood up to 80 percent. So, if we can have that smile on someone’s face just simply by giving them free flowers and what happens is they get two bouquets. So not only are we able to make their day, but they can also in turn make someone else’s day by giving that second bouquet to a random stranger or a family member or friend or whatever the case may be,” said Lum.
After coming to a complete stop in 2020, the campaign is returning this year with over 700 shops participating across the country. Lum says her staff couldn’t be more excited to help spread a little joy around Seguin on Wednesday.
“We are calling ourselves Happiness Ambassadors and so they will be hitting the streets at various locations. They will be going to the library. They could be downtown just wherever they feel the need to be led

to go, I guess, and then just meeting those random people maybe evening popping into a few businesses just to make someone’s day really – wherever they see somebody,” said Lum.
Lum says she knows firsthand the impact of how small gestures, such as flowers, can have on a person. She says her staff can’t wait to brighten up someone’s day and asks that those who are chosen for flowers continue to show that same level of positivity with others.
“We are lucky because we get to see that every day on normal deliveries as well. We see the surprise and the reaction and the happiness – ‘Oh, they
are so beautiful’ – and their moods are instantly lifted and then when we tell them ‘Oh, we are getting this to you for free,’ of course, some people say, ‘is there a gimmick, what do we have to do?’ Absolutely nothing! Just enjoy the flowers and make sure and brighten someone else’s day by giving that second bouquet away and so, we see a lot of surprises, honestly,” said Lum. This marks the 10th year that “Petal It Forward” continues its mission to spread joy through the power of flowers. The campaign is being launched across the globe by the Society of American Florists (SAF)
Students detained following threats made to local schools
(Seguin) – The Seguin Police Department continues to warn individuals, especially students, of the consequences of making threats against local schools. Stephanie Larrimore, Seguin PD’s public information officer, says their reports indicate that two juveniles were detained last week following two separate incidents in which a Seguin ISD campus was threatened.
Larrimore says the first involved a student at Barnes Middle School.
“While in class, a student made a statement that alarmed students and staff. The SRO on campus was notified of the incident and after the school conducted its investigation, it was found that an offense had been committed. Due to the statement made, the student was charged with Terroristic Threats a third-degree felony,” said Larrimore.
Gala, continued.

The second incident reportedly involved an A.J. Briesemeister Middle School student. She says in this case, the juvenile made a statement to another student in the evening while off campus.
“The student was alarmed by the statement that the juvenile said, and law enforcement was notified. With the information collected by the officer’s investigation, it was
Huereca says the shelter has been a cornerstone of support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Guadalupe Valley area since 1983. She says as the only shelter service of its kind in our community, the impact of what it does is great.
“We are really hoping to make an impact by growing off the foundation that our 40 years of previous history has given us,” said Huereca. “Thriving Hearts has been steadfast in providing safety, support, and empowerment to those affected by these deeply impactful issues. Our gala is not only a celebration of our achievements but also a crucial moment to rally together in support of our continued efforts.
This special event allows us to raise vital funds that directly impact our ability to expand services, enhance programs, and reach more individuals in need.”
Organizers say the night of dinner, drinks, and dancing is all about celebrating the lives of over 600 adult and children survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking that the local crisis center helps annually.
Huereca asks folks to come out and join the fun. She
determined that the juvenile would be detained and charged with Terroristic Threats, a third-degree felony,” said Larrimore.
Reports from the Seguin PD also put to rest what they say was an alleged rumor that an adult had been arrested for making a terroristic threat against a school. The rumor about the adult quickly circulated following a social media post late last week.
Larrimore says the public is reminded that there are serious consequences for threatening a school on or off campus. They say parents are reminded to talk to their children regularly about the serious consequences of these actions. They say anyone who hears or suspects someone of making a terroristic threat is asked to contact authorities as soon as possible.
adds the attire will be cowboy chic or the color purple in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
“As far as fundraisers go, it’s not your typical black tie formal wear. It’s fun and lighthearted – you can wear your boots. We are going to have dinner, a silent auction, live auction, live band – Tiffany Dawn will be performing and then we will have a testimonial as well, said Huereca.
Tickets are $50 a person. Table sponsorships for 10 are also available for $500. The doors to the event open at 5:30 pm. Thursday. Tickets are asked to be purchased online as soon as possible. Tickets are available at thrivingheartscc.org. No tickets will be sold at the door.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says that whooping cough cases have surged to record levels since 2014. CDC data shows four times as many cases this year compared to last. The statistics show 16-thousand confirmed cases with two deaths with the highest number of cases in New Jersey, New York, New York City, Pennsylvania and the West Coast. Babies under a year old are at greatest risk of developing whooping cough and having severe complications, including apnea and pneumonia. Health experts blame the surge on missed vaccinations, a trend that began during the COVID-19 pandemic, plus mask-wearing that lowered transmission rates.

McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department Brings Puppet Show to McQueeney Elementary School to Emphasize Fire Safety and Prevention
(McQueeney, TX) -- On Friday, October 4th McQueeney VFD volunteers and a team of puppeteers visited McQueeney Elementary School to educate the students about fire safety and prevention. The puppeteers were a team consisting of Roberto Martinez, his wife Dina and their daughter Andi from Nogales, Mexico. Roberto was a former firefighter who was horrified by the number of children that suffered fire related deaths every year—10 to 15 per year. In 1997, he created a program called “Escuadron de Emergencias”in Nogales. He started with coloring/activity books based on two real life hero firefighters and a young girl that perished saving the lives of three children in a house fire. He soon added puppets based on these characters, plus additional puppet characters, and began presenting fire prevention and safety shows to elementary children in the area. He was soon asked to translate his program into English and do presentations in Arizona and the southwestern United States and even Oregon. Since the inception of his program, there have been zero childhood deaths due to fire in Nogales. He now dedicates his time to educate children about fire safety and prevention. He, along with his wife and daughter, carry an array of puppets with them doing presentations at elementary schools asking only that the sponsoring fire department provide transportation and room and board in the community in which they are performing. The interactive puppet show is accompanied by energetic sing-a-long music and keeps the students mesmerized as they learn about fire safety. The team performed the approximately one hour long show six times on Friday for grades K- 5. This is the second time that McQueeney VFD has brought Roberto to McQueeney Elementary School as part of Fire
Prevention Month.
In addition to the puppet performances, VFD volunteers, dressed in complete bunker gear, including air tanks and masks, demonstrated various fire safety and response techniques, such as crawling close to the floor out of a smoke-filled room. The students were also given a visual tour of the fire engine provided by McQueeney VFD, and various on-board fire-fighting tools. Each student left the program with a fire hat and a better understanding of fire safety.
