(Seguin) -- The city is giving Seguin residents a heads up about a community meeting that will focus on a discussion about the creation of a publicly owned and operated recreation and aquatic facility.
The city is currently working with consultants on a feasibility study that looks at the possibility of building a community recreation center, which could include swimming pools and lots of other indoor and outdoor amenities.
Parks and Recreation Director Jack Jones announced plans for the meeting during Tuesday's meeting of the
Seguin City Council. Jones says the public meeting will be held in two weeks, and they want as many people as possible to attend. This will be an opportunity for people to share their vision for a new rec center.
“We are going to have a community meeting two weeks from tonight at the Seguin Coliseum at 6 o’clock. We are going to have some snacks. We are going to have our consultants coming in town to lead a discussion to determine if a recreational center is to be a part of the future of the city of Seguin. Aquatic, pg. 3
Residents invited to learn more about being a voice for foster care children
(Seguin) – Often times when a child is in foster care, they are caught in the middle. There’s the legal end of things and then there’s the family dynamics that come into play making it difficult for any child to truly understand what is going on around him.
Choosing to walk alongside these children during this very stressful and sometimes heartbreaking journey is a group of volunteers known as CASA or Court Appointed Special Advocates.
Jade Dimitri, CASA community engagement manager, says the mission for the group today is to help recruit even more special volunteers who can essentially be the voice of a foster child in and out of the courtrooms.
“We are a volunteer-based organization. All of our volunteers go through a very thorough training about how to perform their duties as a Court Appointed Special Advocate which is what CASA stands for and once they are through training, they are sworn in by one of our judges and they get appointed to their first case and they serve as a support person for the child or children that is in state care but also there’s the legal advocacy side of it where they gather information. They figure out what the child needs that they are not being provided with – any services they need and then, they are able to advocate for that directly to the judge on the case,” said Dimitri.
To help with the recruitment process, Dimitri says the group on Friday will host Cookies with CASA in one of the classrooms at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. She says folks are invited to sit in on one of the two free sessions with the hopes of learning more on how they too can be a voice for a child.
“Then, cookies with CASA, we just thought it was a great idea to
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
have sort of a low-pressure situation. You aren’t committed to anything if you attend. You are just coming and listening to the basic information about CASA, the different ways you can support us because we do have opportunities besides becoming a CASA to where you can support us and so that people know we fully exist and understand our role within these cases in the community,” said Dimitri.
Liz McCown, is a longtime supporter of CASA. McCown says she was honored to have been introduced to CASA as a young adult and has supported it efforts all these years. A lawyer today, McCown understands the value of what these volunteers give and what the children end up receiving.
“I have a social work degree, so I was exposed to CASA when I was getting that social work degree at TLU. Later when I was in my mid20s, I worked as a CASA volunteer in Washington state and so I got through all the training and did the program and was appointed by a judge as an advocate for a child. Children who are involved in custody situations or abuse and neglect, it is really hard to discern their needs and wants
through all of that and so I saw how a CASA could really pay attention to the kid and what was happening to that child and give them a voice,” said McCown.
Facilitators of Cookies with CASA say when kids enter the foster care system in Guadalupe County, then they all become the community’s responsibility.
McCown adds the more volunteers, the more kids that can have a voice in their future.
“We just want people to come out and see if there is some way they can help the kids of Guadalupe County because there is a lot of need for this kind of participation from our community and it is hard to get the word out but we just want to invite people in to come see if there is a fit for them to volunteer because it really could be something that is heartwarming for everyone involved if they come out and see,” said McCown.
The two sessions of Cookies with CASA will be held on Friday. Session One will be held from noon to 1 p.m. followed by Session Two from 5 to 6 p.m. The sessions will be held in the classrooms located on the second story of GRMC’s Central Entrance.

Aquatic, continued.
Your feedback would be fundamental in the determination if a recreation center is needed and if so, what experiences are most desirable by the community such things as a fitness room, a gymnasium, sports, classrooms, team room, indoor walking track, things like that,” said Jones.
Jones says the community feedback is a big part of the feasibility study. He says that's one of the reasons why they want everyone to attend this important community meeting on Oct. 29.
“Our consultants from Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects along with PROS Consulting would be in town to lead the community discussion. Again, in person meeting two weeks from today on Tuesday, Oct. 29 6 o’clock. It will start at six maybe done at 7. We will see how long it goes, how many people are attending. With
the new technology at the Coliseum, we are also looking at doing this as a livestream as well. If we are able to do a livestream, maybe we can get some live feedback as we are talking. So, the whole of this in-person meeting is to get feedback on the spot,” said Jones.
The city hired Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects to help with this process. The firm also worked with the city of New Braunfels in 2014, and helped with the process that eventually led to the popular Das Rec facility in New Braunfels.
The feasibility study will explore all options and give the city of Seguin all the information that it needs to make a decision about the project’s future. The community input will also help to shape that vision.
The public meeting on the community recreation and aquatic center is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29 in the Seguin Coliseum.
