Registration now underway for Run to eRace Child Abuse 5k, 10k

Deadline arrives to secure tickets for annual Wade Busby Memorial Casino Night By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Plans are in place for what has been described as one of the largest fundraising events in Guadalupe County. The Wade Busby Memorial Casino Night Fundraiser runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Columbus Club Hall of Seguin, formerly known as the KC Hall. Mark Cerda, one of the founders for the fundraising event, says people who are interested need to contact him this Friday in order to secure a ticket as they too are known to sell out before doors open.

By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Cibolo) -Guadalupe County's first and only shelter for foster kids will be running to you this weekend for a little support. TruLight's Youth Village located near Marion will be hosting its second annual Run to eRace Child Abuse 5k/10k. The event is slated for Saturday at Discovery

Church in Cibolo. The much anticipated shelter officially opened a few weeks ago and is already serving area kids who otherwise might have found themselves sleeping on the floors of the CPS office due to the lack of foster homes in the area. Jennifer Obearle, the executive administrative assistant for the Youth Village, says this weekend's race in Cibolo

will be the first of many fundraisers to come for the non-profit facility. Obearle says working to meet the needs of these kids will be an ongoing effort from here on out. "We've finally opened The Village out in the Seguin, Marion area and we 've already got 12 kids out there and we are getting a couple more today so that's really exciting," said Obearle. See RUN, page 3

"So there is no tickets available at the door. We do have a few tickets left that you can acquire by calling me at 830-305-3861 or you can come down to the K.C. Hall. We will be there all day until 6 o'clock or 7 o'clock (Friday) and pick up the tickets that way but Saturday during the event, we will not sell tickets at the door," said Cerda. Cerda says the memorial is organized as a way to remember his best friend, Wade, who if alive today would also be doing his part to support kids in agriculture. "The money that we raise at this one night event goes to support youth in agriculture. We sponsor where we will help kids at their local stock shows, at Guadalupe County, Bexar County, Wilson County, LaVernia, Comal County. We've even gone down to George West and Luling and then we go to the San Antonio Stock Show and try to support kids there also and so we are able --

in the 15 years that we've doing this, we've been able to support over 6,200 kids with $1.5 million in funds. It's absolutely phenomenal. In our first event, we raised $11,000. Last year, it was $240,000. It seems to continue to grow. People see what we are doing with the money that we are raising and they want to be part of it. They want to support and we are there to support kids involved in agriculture and if Wade was still alive today, we'd still be sitting down there doing the same thing," said Cerda. See WADE, page 3

GVCCC to host annual barbecue fundraiser this Sunday Christian Counseling Center to raise money for year round mental health services

The Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center will be hosting its annual BBQ Chicken fundraiser on Sunday at Faith Lutheran Church.

I came around in 2003 and we've been doing this fundraiser since 2003. So according to my math, that's 16 years and it provides kind of stipends for people who don't have insurance. Most insurance that we do deal with is Medicare, Medicaid but also there are people who fall through the cracks and we are able to provide them with masters, doctorate level counselors to do mainly individual, couple, family counseling as well as child therapy and play therapy," said Wilkens.

Dr. Nick Wilkens, of the counseling center, says proceeds from the lunch go directly back into supporting those who need the services.

In addition to the meal, Wilkens says those in attendance will be treated to live music plus will have the chance to win one of several great raffle prizes.

"We've been around since the late 80s when were originally Lutheran Social Services of the South and they got out of the counseling business. People of the churches incorporated because they felt the service for high quality counseling that people can actually afford was needed and they incorporated and created the name and that was about 1996 and

"It's barbecue chicken -- this year, with more chicken, larger plates, same price. It's $10 per plate. I always tell folks you are going to go out to eat anyway on Sunday so you might as well do it for a good cause. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

The plate fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in the Faith Lutheran Church Life Enrichment Center. A drive-through line which begins at 10:30 a.m. will also be available in the alley behind the church. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance at Parker's City Pharmacy. Tickets will also be available at the door. Faith Lutheran Church is located at 1326 E Cedar St. Those unable to make the fundraiser but who are wanting to donate are asked to visit www.guadalupecounseling.org and click on the Support US tab.

Residents invited to support new TruLight Youth Village during weekend 5k, 10k RUN, continued from page 1 Obearle says registration is currently available online at www.athleteguild.com. She says folks having different skill levels are invited to walk or run for a good cause. "It's a 5k/10k here in Cibolo. It is the only 5K/10K in Cibolo thus far. The proceeds that we raise from this will go towards The Village to help take care of the kids that are out there, build new buildings that we need, get homes, buy groceries -- all the things that kids need for everyday life," said Obearle. Obearle says in addition to participants, the group is also looking for a few good volunteers to assist during the race. "We always need volunteers for our race. We have a fun zone where parents

Roxanne Heckmann has a group that they happen to be playing at Faith Lutheran that morning and the polka band is going to be entertaining us," said Wilkens.

We'll have some outdoor games that they can play so we always need volunteers to help keep an eye on those areas. Everybody can do something even you don't want to run or walk. You can do something. You can support financially. You can sponsor. You can come out and support in person by volunteering your time and then we have several other opportunities outside of the race this weekend that people can do to support our ministry," said Obearle. Cost to participate is $40 for the 5k and $50 for the 10k. The race gets underway at 8 a.m. Saturday. Discovery Church is located at 242 Country Lane in Cibolo.

Kids Day in the Park to offer free kids activities in downtown Seguin Dupree says the program has joined forces with a number of sponsors and businesses who are all helping to make this year's event even more successful.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Downtown Seguin this Saturday will welcome the return of one of its most popular events for children.Connections Individual and Family Services is inviting Seguin's youngest children to its 11th Annual Kids Day in the Park. Megan Dupree, an outreach coordinator for Connections, says the event is hosted each year to celebrate children while also providing their families an opportunity to learn more about the many services that are offered year-round by local agencies and businesses.

"Any businesses or non-profit that will be out there that day will have a kids activity included in their booth space. So at each booth, there will be a fun activity for kids to kind of draw the kids in and give them something to do while their parents talk to the organization that is there. We'll also have a bounce house. We will have a rock wall. We will have a DJ and a face painter as well. All the activities that will be at the booth will be free," said Dupree.

"Connections is a non-profit that has been in existence since 1981. We work in 17 South Central Texas counties and Kids Day in the Park is our chance to showcase not only our services but also the services of other non-profit organizations to the residents of Guadalupe County. It's specifically focused on the citizens there," said Dupree.

Kona Ice plus other reasonably priced snacks will be available at the event. Parents are also reminded that coloring sheets were also sent home will local students. Those students returning the coloring page on Saturday will receive a free cotton candy. Kids Day in the Park will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Central Park.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 18, 2019

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Seguin chases 4-0 district mark in home clash vs. Austin-McCallum, Friday's game to air on KWED season. He went 21-24 (87.5 percent) for 260 yards and two scores last week against Travis. Receivers Dravan McKnight (23 rec., 363 yds., 4 TD), Clark Ullrich (26 rec., 306 yds., 4 TD), Tristan Moreno (10 rec., 218 yds., 1 TD), and Trevor Waz (19 rec., 164 yds., TD), along with tight end Jonathan Patterson (13 rec., 220 yds., 2 TD) have given Mickles a vast and versatile array of downfield targets. Junior running-back Marques Washington spearheads Seguin's rushing attack. His 118-yard, two-touchdown performance against Travis lifted his season totals to 833 yards (7.4 per carry) and 12 scores. McCallum's offensive leaders include quarterback Jaxson Rosales, running-back Caleb Brown, and receiver Takai Satberry. Rosales only attempted nine passes in the win over Austin-Navarro, but he completed six for 110 yards and four touchdowns - all to Satberry. Brown ran for 96 yards and a score on 15 carries.

(Seguin) - Seguin looks to move above .500 on the season and log its fourth consecutive win in District 12-5A-Division I Friday evening when the Knights of Austin-McCallum come calling at Matador Stadium. The Matadors are 3-3 overall with a 3-0 district record in Travis Bush's fourth season as head coach, and have yet to face a serious challenge from a 12-5A-Division I opponent. After last Thursday's 50-7 road win over Austin-Travis, Seguin has outscored its district foes 144-13 with only one offensive touchdown allowed in 12 quarters. McCallum enters Friday with a 2-4 overall record and a 1-2 district mark under second-year head coach Thomas Gammerdinger. The Knights opened the 12-5A-Division I slate with 56-0 and 43-21 losses to Austin-LBJ and Dripping Springs, respectively, before dominating Austin-Navarro 56-0 last week.

Seguin's defense hasn't surrendered a touchdown since the first half of the district opener against Austin-Northeast, a stretch of 10 consecutive quarters. The Matadors only allowed 29 total yards and one first down last week against Travis.

Despite the high point totals allowed to the Jaguars and Tigers, Bush anticipates a McCallum defenive front led by All-District linebacker August McCollum and 290 lb. defensive tackle Allvino Carbajal to give Seguin's offense its toughest district test to date. "It's a seven-in-the-box defense," Bush said. "They're built to stop the run. They're going to be a load to handle up front, and it's going to be hard to run the football effectively. We're going to have to be creative with how we run the football, and it's going to force us to make some plays in the passing game, which is what we did last year. That's kind of how they're built, so we're going to have to execute, be efficient in the run game, and we're going to have to execute the passing game to move the ball tonight."

Seguin defensive back Dillion Gutierrez (left) and offensive lineman Joshua Avalos (right) have been selected to play in the 42nd annual San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game on Jan. 4 in the Alamadome. Photo courtesy of Seguin ISD Facebook Page. Efficiency in the run game and execution in the passing game have been signature traits of the Seguin offense against district competition, particularly since senior quarterback Jhalen Mickles

made his healthy return to the lineup against Crockett. Mickles has completed 72 percent of his passes for 767 yards, six touchdowns, and no interceptions while running for five scores this

Statistical leaders on that side of the ball include sophomore linebacker John Michael Mata (63 tackles, 1 Int.), and sophomore defensive end Ian Box (3.5 sacks, 15 TFL). Safeties Micah Rodriguez and Dillion Gutierrez each have interceptions as well. Friday's kickoff at Matador Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580AM and Seguintoday.com. Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports TLU looks to continue winning ways in ASC visit to Howard Payne, Saturday game to air on KWED (Brownwood) - The most opportunistic defense in Division III football looks to help Texas Lutheran secure a fifth consecutive American Southwest Conference win Saturday when the Bulldogs visit Howard Payne at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.

McMurry, respectively, but have dropped three straight since, falling to Hardin Simmons 63-20, Mary Hardin-Baylor 65-0, and Louisiana College 27-21.

Kedrick Ward (2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries), safety Daniel Enriquez (3 Int.), defensive end Jackson Worley (1 Int., 1 FR), and defensive tackle Brandon Bennett (2 FR).

TLU leads the nation in takeaways (18) and turnover margin (+14) after collecting at least five turnovers in three straight games, including the 59-21 win over Louisiana College last Saturday. The victory gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 season record and a 4-0 ASC mark in Carl Gustafson's third season as head coach.

HPU's offense has shown improvement from Harris' first two seasons in 2019. The Yellow Jackets average 29 points and 382.6 yards per game. The individual standouts include quarterback Caleb Estes (68.6 percent, 1,158 yds., 13 TD, 4 Int.) running-back Cameron Keener (210 yds., 3 TD), and receivers Thomas Williams (14 rec., 314 yds., 4 TD) and DunTayvian Gross (28 rec., 288 yds., 5 TD).

The TLU offense is picking up steam as the season hurdles the mid-point as well. Sophomore quarterback Wade Freeman picked up his second ASC Offensive Player of the Week award after going a perfect 13-13 through the air for 176 yards and three touchdowns (all to C.J. Romero) while running for 72 yards and a score on just six carries against Louisiana College.

Howard Payne comes off the bye week with a 23 season mark and a 1-3 conference record under third-year head coach and former TLU co-defensive coordinator Braxton Harris.

The Yellow Jackets will try have to avoid the fate of TLU's last three opponents and protect the football if they have any hopes of pulling an upset.

The Yellow Jackets started the season with 4834 and 56-37 wins over Austin College and

Falcons hope to build momentum in home clash with Austin-Harmony (Seguin) - The Lifegate six-man football team goes after its second straight win Friday in a home contest against AustinHarmony School of Excellence at Falcon Field. The Falcons rebounded from the Oct. 4 loss to Bastrop-Tribe to defeat Red OakOvilla Christian 66-36 last Friday and move record to 5-2 in John Stout's first season as head coach. Austin-Harmony has dropped its last two games to Austin-Achieve 65-6 and San Antonio-Jubilee 56-12. Lifegate's junior spread-back enters Friday with 1,228 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns to go with 639 passing yards and eight scores with only one interception. Fellow junior Barson Schmidt turned in his best all-around performance of the season last week against Ovilla Christian. Schmidt ran for 52 yards and a touchdown, threw for 48 yards and a

score, caught three passes for 24 yards, recorded a team-high 15 tackles on defense, and coralled an interception. "Barson had a really good week," Stout said. "Against (Bastrop) Tribe, he wasn't feeling good. He was sick the two days before, and wasn't really 100 percent. This week, he really brought it, and showed us what he had. I'm really proud of him. He really stepped up, and he really took after it." Schmidt leads the Falcons in receptions with 16 for 156 yards and a touchdown. Zach McCulloch enters Friday with a teamhigh 194 receiving yards and four touchdowns on seven catches. Schmidt's six sacks and two interceptions are also team-high totals. Shellnut paces the defense in tackles with 48. Friday's kickoff at Falcon Field is set for 7:30 p.m.

Freeman has completed 70 percent of his passes this season for 628 yards, six scores, and no interceptions. With 331 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Freeman combines with runningbacks Austin Matthews (347 yds., 4 TD), Chris Monroe (284 yds., 3 TD), and Ian Leslie (267 yds., 1 TD) to give the Bulldogs four of the ASC's top ten rushers.

TLU ranks third in the conference in scoring (35.6) and total offense (404.6) and second in rushing yards (261.6). The Bulldogs look to keep trending upward against a Howard Payne defense allowing 45.2 points and 482 yards per game (both 9th among the league's 10 teams), and an ASC-high 7.4 yards per play. In contrast to TLU, the Yellow Jackets have only forced five turnovers on the year. Senior linebacker Austin Killgore leads HPU with 32 tackles, and defensive back Connor Day enters Saturday with two interceptions. Saturday's kickoff at Gordon Wood Stadium is slated for 1 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:30.

Marion looks to rebound from Jourdanton loss in Homecoming game vs. Karnes City (Marion) - Marion tries to bounce back from its first district loss of the Ryne Miller era Friday evening when the Bulldogs play host to Karnes City in the 2019 Homecoming game at Veterans Stadium. Jourdanton handed Marion a 3514 setback last Friday, dropping the Bulldogs to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in District 15-3A-Division I. Marion's goal to finish the regular season with three straight wins and secure the highest possible playoff seed begins against a 3-3 Karnes City team that comes off the bye week with an 0-2 district record after losing to San Antonio-Cole 37-6 on Sept. 27 and Jourdanton 55-7 on Oct. 4. Miller says his players have

turned the teachable moments from the Jourdanton loss into positives and hit the practice field with the right mindset this week. "Our guys, we're good," the coach said. "The word of the week here was 'focus.' There's a lot of distractions this week with Homecoming, it's our Pink-out game, and obviously it's another big district game with Karnes (City). We wanted to make sure our guys were re-focused and ready to go. Our big thing is third quarters. Third quarters are killing us right now, so we made it a point that we wanted to focus coming out in the second half, ready to go play that third quarter, and put together a complete game." Marion's statistical leaders include senior quarterback Zach

Goodwin (1,339 passing yds., 13 TD, 5 Int., 5 rushing TD), running-back Ray Rayos (387 yds, 1 TD), and receiver Jacob Devora (29 rec., 422 yds., 6 TD). Karnes City averages 146 rushing yards per game and will try to establish the run wth junior back Jaden Jaramillo (341 yds., 2 TD). The Badgers will mix in the occasional pass with quarterback Braden Bowen (551 yds., 7 TD, 3 Int.) looking for receiver Aaron Smith (12 rec., 147 yds., 3 TD). The Bulldogs and Badgers are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Veterans Stadium. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Music greats to be remembered this weekend nected to the Loretta Lynn Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, TN where they are raising their two sons, Tru Diamon and Scout Michael. She is embracing this season and her writing reflects her newfound contentment. Tayla just signed a recording contract with Heart of Texas Records and is working on a tribute album to her grandmother to be released in 2020. Tre Twitty, the son of Michael Twitty and the grandson of the late Conway Twitty, is a remarkable young talent. When you combine dark hair, enticing soft blue eyes, a gentle smile and a wonderful personality with two generations of hit song makers, you have a talented rising star. Tre was born in Nashville in 1976. In 1981, he moved to Moon Lake, Mississippi, the same area in which his Father and Grandfather were raised. He attended grade school in Helena and high school in Hattiesburg. He was very active in all sports including basketball, football and baseball.

Tayla Lynn and Tre Twitty THEATRE, continued from page 3 Their songs “He Better Be Dead” and “Paper Heart” both made the Billboard chart. Tayla signed with indie label London Tone Music in 2016 and her next project is a solo album that will reflect Tayla’s personal journey over the last few years. As she began to reflect on the heartache and joy she’s experienced songs began to flow. With her aunt Patsy Lynn at the producing helm, this is sure to be not only a family affair, but also an album reflecting the roots that have kept Tayla strong through the storms of life. In addition to her musical endeavors, Tayla is also stepping in to film and television opportunities. She wrapped her first film as the leading role in a faith based film directed by Mark Nicolosi. Tayla and her husband, Jon, recently purchased 30 acres con-

eral appearances on the Grand Ole Opry. She is now working with Heart of Texas Records released her first album in a number of years “Meet Me In Texas” has received rave reviews all over the world. She followed that project with her current album “Texas Sensation.” Kaye Tolson has been playing bass and singing since her teenage years. Her latest project is a CD titled “Share My World.” Recorded at the Heart of Texas Recording Studios, Tolson combined some of her favorite Country and Gospel songs as well as a duet with Justin Trevino. Tolson plays bass on our Heart of Texas Roadshows throughout Texas.

After high school, he spent a year of trying to decide what he wanted out of life before finally joining the Air Force. During his time in service, he traveled the world. He trained and served on one of the highest levels of Honor Guard that the Air Force has. Tre was discharged in August of 2000 after four years of service. Soon after that, he found himself back in Nashville and on the road at one of his father’s shows. His father asked him to come up and sing a song one night for fun. Tre chose to sing "The Rose" and with his "Poppy's" (Conway's) growl and same great voice, he drove the crowd wild. Since then he has been traveling with his Dad on the road around the world with the powerful "Memories of Conway" show. It only took that one show for Tre to know what he wanted in life and that was a chance in the music business and a shot at the top. It is truly amazing that this young man, the third generation of Twittys, could possibly be so much like his "Poppy" (Conway). But even more, it is truly a blessing that he has chosen to share his gift with the world. Tre will be performing some of his grandfather’s biggest hits including “Hello Darlin” “Slow Hand” “This Time I’ve Hurt Her More Than She Loves Me” and some of the Loretta and Conway duets with Tayla. Seguin native Dottsy had numerous hit records on RCA including “I’ll Be Your San Antone Rose” “We Still Sing Love Songs In Texas” “Tryin To Satisfy You” “After Sweet Memories Play Born To Loose Again” and “Storms Never Last”. She toured all over the world and made sev-

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Lowering Prescription Drug Prices (Washington, DC) -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is pushing for the passage of Democrats' plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Speaking at the Capitol, the California congresswoman said drug prices are "out of control" because drug manufacturers are overcharging for medications. Pelosi says the crushing burden of drug prices is weighing on seniors and the American taxpayers. She touted the recent Congressional Budget Office report that found HR-Three would save 345-billion-dollars over a decade starting in 2023. The plan would require drug manufacturers to negotiate prices with the health secretary. Insulin would be among the drugs for which prices would be negotiated in the first year, however the bill needs to pass the House, Senate and receive a signature from President Trump.
