(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to young business leaders in an attempt to get them more involved in the community. The chamber's new Young Professionals group has been meeting for a couple months now. Chelsea Roberts is one of the local young professionals that helped to organize the group. She says, so far, they have gotten off to a great start. "Our vision is to connect and engage career oriented individuals through professional development (and) to help Seguin grow and prosper. We just thought that there was a need in Seguin for young professionals to get together to network and to grow professionally," said Roberts. Chamber
Membership
and
Events Manager Georgia Hester also has been a big part of starting the group. Hester says the group is growing and they hope that more young professionals will step forward and be part of this new organization. "The Young Professionals group has really just kicked off. We are moving forward every time we meet. We meet monthly -- every third Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the chamber office. If you're interested and even if you're not a member with the chamber, come out and check out Young Professionals. It's just a great way to get involved and figure out what the chamber does. I think that's part of the point -- to get this next generation involved in not just the community, but also with the chamber and let them know what we do in the community," said Hester. Hester says Young Professionals has a dynamic group of young people who eager to become a bigger part of this community.

"We kick off with an educational and a professional development piece for the first ten to 15 minutes. They want to do a lot of give back to the community, so we have several things planned. One of those is that we will be wrapping presents for Blue Santa in December, and we want to help with the (KWED) Food & Toy Drive. We are really excited about collecting things, and just really give back to the community, and (also) getting some neat events going on," said Hester. These young professionals are growing and meeting new challenges in their chosen profession. Hester says her generation really wants to feel like the work that they do matters. She says that's one of the reasons why this group is so important. "It's really neat to see, because as we've been meeting, I noticed that, that is their main topic of conversation. 'What can we do
to give back' and 'what can we do to help.' It's fun to be a part of, and I think it's going to be beneficial to the young professionals here in our community, said Hester. Joining the chamber's Young Professionals is easy. Hester says you don't need a full chamber membership to join. "If you are part of a company that's already a member with the chamber, you can participate. There's no additional fee or anything like that. But what's kind of cool about this group is that we've also opened it up to those who might not already be involved with the chamber. If you are looking to get involved, you can still be involved in Young Professionals. A $50 annual fee is how we are doing it right now. It gives you an opportunity to still get the networking and connect to young professionals here in Seguin," said Hester. See CHAMBER, page 2
NEF helping students in Navarro ISD By Darren Dunn and Cindy Aguirre (Geronimo) -- The Navarro Education Foundation (NEF) is giving students and teachers in the Navarro ISD 57,000 reasons to smile this week. The foundation on Friday handed out its grants to assist and support education programs in the Navarro ISD. This year, the NEF provided just over $57,000 in grants. Since its inception, it has now provided more than $550,000 in grants to NISD classrooms. NEF Vice President Holly Hagan they were thrilled to be able to provide the grants. She says in years past they've received lots of requests for technology, but she says this year was different. She says the teachers really focused on different ways to use the money. "We were very excited about some of the uniqueness of the grants that came before us. It was a lot of different things that they were asking for. In years past, there had been a lot of technology -- iPads, Chromebooks and things like that. This year, there wasn't a whole lot of technology asking, but a lot more field trips, or bringing in guest speakers -- kind of, more hands on learning," said Hagan. See NEF, page 3

In case you are wondering, Hester says they have defined what the "young" in Young Professionals actually means. She says they have a age limit in mind, but really they don't want to discourage anyone from becoming a part of this new group. "The age that it usually targets is between 21 and 40.
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.
We, by no means at the chamber, ever want to draw a line and say 'hey, you can't come to this.' We are not like that. I don't think Seguin is like that. We have people that are over 40, who are already part of this, and wanted, enthusiastically, to be a part of this, since the very start of it. That is where we are bringing in a mentorship program to help these young professionals make the connections that they need to make and learn from them. Whether it's resume building or end-
Chamber President Kendy Gravett says the Young Professionsals fits in nicely with the chamber's overall mission, and she's thrilled to see this group come together. "Part of our strategic goals,
for the next few years, is to be inclusive of all types of chamber members. So we wanted to have programs that fit each sector, and this is a sector that was missing. We are really excited...(they) decided to step up to the plate, and put this Young Professionals group together. I'm really excited about it. They are doing a fabulous job," said Gravett. The Seguin Young Professionals group is meeting again this week.
The group is hosting a "Meet Up" for a pub crawl in downtown Seguin. The pub crawl is part of the Pecan Fest/Heritage Days activities this coming weekend. The pub crawl will run from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Friday, and those who plan to participate are encouraged to meet up at 6:30 p.m. in Central Park. Those who need more information about the Young Professionals, can call the chamber office at 830-379-6382 or go online to seguinchamber.com.

Foundation awards $57,000 in classroom grants this year NEF, continued from page 1 The list of classroom grants includes money to build an outdoor classroom. This project is expected to enhance instruction provided to students by allowing them to learn in an outdoor setting, while allowing the teacher to incorporate lessons about things like flowers, plants and insects. The NEF says this project will be done in phases to eventually provide a number of different classroom components to the outdoor space. NEF officials say they also received several requests for what they described as unique seating for some classrooms. These are chairs that allow the student not to be in a staionary chair, which they say gives some students the freedom to move around a bit while learning, but would still prevent them from being disruptive to others in the classroom. Hagan says with all the new ideas included in the grants this year, it was a thrill to watch as the awards were handed out on Friday. She says they were fortunate to be able to meet, at least a portion, of all of the requested grants this year. "I believe we are funding all the grants. I think there might have been a couple that they didn't get the full amount that they were asking for, but everybody is getting something," said Hagan.
The NEF generates most of its money from its Duck Fest fundraiser, which is held each May at Walnut Springs Park in Seguin. She says individuals, families and businesses have been very generous, and the foundation, in turn, is able to award more grants to teachers each year.

Other grants this year included items such as a Breakfast Book club, which encourages outside of the classroom reading; Battle of the Books, which is a competition where students read books and then compete on comprehension; and the foundation also had reuqests for several different instruments, like a ukulele, to help give students a different opportunity to learn music.

The Navarro Education Foundation is also using the grant award announcements as an opportunity to remind the community to save the date for this school year's Duck Fest. It's scheduled for the third Saturdcay in May (May 16, 2020) along the creek in Walnut Springs Park.

Matadors turn away McCallum 40-14, set up 1st place showdown vs. Dripping Springs The Matadors pushed their district record to 4-0 and the overall mark to 4-3. The win sets up a battle for sole possession of first place in the 125A-Division I standings when Seguin visits Dripping Springs this Friday. Mickles threw touchdown passes of 33 and 47 yards to Clark Ullrich, along with a 30-yard strike to Jonathan Patterson, to help the Matadors build a 21-0 halftime lead. Ullrich hauled in a slant pass from Mickles on a 3rd-and-19 play from the Seguin 48 for a 21yard gain and a first down to keep the second of those drives going. The first-half scoring possessions covered 45, 78, and 90 yards. McCallum tried an onside kick to open the third quarter, but Seguin recovered it and promptly stretched the lead to 27-0 on Marques Washington's 35-yard touchdown run. The Knights came storming back to make things interesting from that point.
(Seguin) - Jhalen Mickles threw five touchdowns passes Friday evening to spark Seguin's fourth consecutive win in District 12-5ADivision I, a 40-14 triumph over AustinMcCallum at Matador Stadium.
McCallum used a touchdown run by Daniel Duenas, a defensive stop to force a Seguin punt, and a one-yard scamper by Caleb Brown to pull within 27-14 by the end of the third quarter. The Knights converted four fourth downs on their second scoring drive, a march that covered 82 yards in 19 plays. Mickles and his receivers sprung back to life in
the fourth quarter, and the defense tightened back up to erase any thoughts of a McCallum rally.
aggressive, the defense didn't let them in the end zone after that, so I think we needed that moving forward."
Tristan Moreno hauled in a sideline pass from Mickles, broke mutliple tackles, and sprinted into the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown just 17 seconds in the final frame to cap an eightplay, 78-yard drive and give the Mats a 33-14 cushion.
Backup kicker Jordan Ramirez went 4-6 on PAT kicks and had a 24-yard field goal attempt blocked while filling in for injured starter Garrett Stiles. Mickles threw his first interception of the season, but now has 11 touchdown passes on the year. Washington's third quarter was his 13th of the year, and Ullrich now leads the team with six touchdown catches. Micah Rodriguez came up with his second interception in as many games.
Mickles found his tight end Patterson over the middle on a seam rout for a 24-yard scoring strike to punctuate a seven-play, 53-yard possession and establish the final margin with 8:39 to play. Seguin head coach Travis Bush was pleased to see his team face and overcome adversity for the first time in district play after rolling over three straight opponents. "We needed that before these last couple of weeks here - we needed the game to be hard at some point," Bush said. "We talked about starting fast, so proud of the way we came out. We started fast. And proud of the way we battled back, because it got hairy there, two score game, they're moving the ball well. We didn't move the ball at times offensively, but to our guys' credit, they put the foot down, the offense went down and scored. The offense stayed
"Hats off to McCallum," Bush said. "They made some adjustments at halftime, and made some plays, and hats off to our staff. They made some adjustments on their end to stop what they were doing in the fourth quarter. Proud of our defense. When your defense is playing well, and your quarterback is playing well, you've got a chance to win." Seguin hits the road to face district co-leader Dripping Springs (6-1, 4-0) this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 6:30.

Navarro football steamrolls Eastside Memorial 54-0 for 100th win this decade (Austin) - Navarro used three defensive touchdowns to build a 40-0 halftime lead and never looked back Thursday night in a 54-0 dismantling of District 13-4A-Division I foe Austin-Eastside Memorial at House Park. The win was the program's 100th of the decade, dating back to the start of the 2010 season. In additional to the usual offensive onslaught with the Slot-T rushing attack, the undefeated Panthers opened the floodgates on Eastside Memorial with a 12-yard fumble return from Brian Holmes and a 24-yard interception return by Gabriel Means in the first quarter, in addition to a 34-yard interception return by James Brinsley in the second period. "It's exciting to see those guys score," Navarro head coach Rod Blount said. "It's exciting for defense or special teams to score every time, but especially when those guys that aren't getting as many touches get in that end zone, it's great for them." Navarro piled up 461 yards of total offense and limited Eastside Memorial to 29.
Senior fullback Euler Deleon topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second straight season with 100 yards and a touchdown on just four carries. Fellow senior Johnny Alegria added 70 yards and a score on just three carries to go with a nine yard catch in his second game back after missing extended time with an injury.
none more than four times. Navarro, ranked as high as No. 5 in the various 4A Division II state polls last week, moved to 2-0 in district play and 7-0 overall with the win. The Panthers host district rival Wimberley at Erwin-Lee Field this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"It's good to have Johnny back," Blount said. "He's a great player out there on the field for us, he's a great kid, he really understands football, he sees a lot of things, and it's an extra set of eyes out on the field for us when he's out there." Nick Billings completed the touchdown pass to Alegria as part of a 2-3 night for 45 yards. His other completion went to Kaid Qassom for 36 yards. Jean "MoMo" Sims added 37 yards on three carries. The Panthers used a 33-yard touchdown run by Kyle Dietert and a 26-yard scamper to the end zone by Brinsley to produce the final margin in the second half. All told, 11 Navarro players carried the ball at least once,
