Honor your Veteran for FREE
KWED, Seguin Daily News offers
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Today is the last chance to salute and recognize your favorite American Veteran. The veterans will not only be featured in the November edition of the Seguin Today Magazine, but their photos will also run daily in the Seguin Daily News online at SeguinToday.com.
Nick Spence, KWED and Seguin Daily News sales manager says the media group wanted to give the community a free chance to honor these men and women in celebration of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
“Our free Veterans Salutes give the community a chance to honor and recognize the service of their loved ones who have served in the military. This special feature will allow people to submit a photo, name, and the branch of service of a veteran, and they will be highlighted on our Veteran Salutes page in the
November issue of Seguin Today Magazine. It’s a small but heartfelt way to show our appreciation for their sacrifices, both in print and online throughout the month of November,” said Spence.
While they are encouraging as many salutes as possible, Spence is asking that photos and info be submitted today by 5 p.m.
“It’s incredibly easy! All you have to do is simply email us the veteran’s photo, name, and branch of service at kwedveteransalutes@gmail. com. There’s no cost involved, and it only takes a few minutes to submit the information. We’re making it as simple as possible for everyone to participate and honor the veterans in their lives.”
Again, those wishing to submit a free Veterans Day salute are asked to email kwedveteransalutes@ gmail.com.
Leading metal manufacturer achieves NEW employee-ownership CERTIFICATION
Central States Inc. provides employees with financial freedom opportunities
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – There’s a rare jewel among Seguin’s manufacturing community. In observance of October as National Employee Ownership Month, Central States Manufacturing in Seguin is celebrating its accomplishments in continuing to operate as 100 percent employee owned.
Central States, a leader in metal building components, roofing, and building systems, recently has become a member of Certified EmployeeOwned (Certified EO), the leading certification program for employeeowned companies in America.
To become a member of Certified EO, companies must pass a rigorous certification process to demonstrate that their employees own at least 30
percent of the business (exclusive of company founders). They must also show that access to ownership is open to every employee, and that the concentration of ownership is limited.
Company officials say strict requirements mean that very few American companies reach this standard plus an even much smaller percentage are 100 percent employeeowned like Central States.
Kevin Hahn is the Central States’ managing director for Texas. Hahn, who once served as the plant manager here in Seguin, says investment begins when stockholders are all involved in the company.
“Our company is 100 percent owned by the employees. So, there
are no stockholders that aren’t involved. Everybody that owns stock is an employee. If you don’t work at Central States, you cannot buy our stock. It’s not publicly traded. Every employee is part owner 100 percent in Central States, and it has been that way (for the last several years). We were partially employee owned and there are a few of those companies out in the workforce but we’ve been 100 percent employee owned since 2011,” said Hahn.
Hahn adds that the benefits, in the end, are well worth the effort for employees. Plus, he says it is a huge motivating factor.
“Everybody knows that they are an owner so it helps in the decision making of everybody -- from somebody that started a week ago to somebody who has been here 25 years and what I think is one of my favorite things is I have multiple people that have worked here 20 years in Cedar Hill –Certification, pg. 4
Seguin City Council District 2
The Seguin Daily News continues its highlight of the local candidates appearing on the November 5, 2024, General Election. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions. Early voting begins today, Monday, Oct. 21, and runs through Friday, Nov.1. Today’s featured contest is the race for Seguin City Council District 2.
Candidate:
David Eveld
What initially inspired you to run for elected office?
My wife and I have lived in the downtown area of Seguin for 25 years, where we raised our children. We love Seguin and the area where we live.
District 2 representative, Sonia Mendez, sadly passed away in June leaving a vacant seat. I decided this was an opportunity to get involved on the local level to help my neighborhood, District 2 and Seguin become an even better place to live, work and raise a family.
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?
There are well maintained homes throughout the downtown area of District 2. In addition, many people have invested a lot into restoring old homes and there are many new homes. But there are also many vacant homes that invite squatters, rundown rental properties, many roads in need of repair and other issues of concern. The city needs to help the residents of this area, who invest their resources into their homes and properties, to make it safer for their families, improve their property values and invite others to buy and restore homes in this area.
Eveld, pg. 4
Candidate: Mario Hernandez
What initially inspired you to run for elected office?
After my cousin, Sonya Mendez, sadly passed away, leaving the City Council seat she represented vacant, Sonya’s family and friends as well as members of my church asked me to run for office. It was an easy decision to make since I have always served my community. Since I decided to run, I have met wonderful people in my district. They opened my eyes to their issues, concerns and challenges. I am ready to take on those challenges to make Seguin a better place for all of us.
Our citizens need roads repaired, water lines replaced, and drainage improvements. I will work to get programs and funding in place to prepare us for the future and for growth.
As a former Texas peace officer, Chief of Police, and member of several different local municipalities, I know first-hand how city governments operate. We need Seguin to be a safe place for our children to live and thrive, make it easier for families to flourish and maintain their integrity, and we need above standard people fighting for these goals.
Hernandez, pg. 4
Seguin City Council District 2
While respecting private property rights, the city needs either stricter ordinances or more stringent enforcement of ordinances or to take other legal measures regarding rental properties and vacant homes and properties. I also believe that residents of District 2 and other districts would benefit from a public swimming pool and activity center. Many years ago, Seguin had both. We need them again.
What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?
In addition to being a property owner in District 2 for the last 25 years, I have had my law practice downtown since 1995. I am very invested in seeing District 2 continue to be revitalized and to be a thriving place for families, property owners and businesses. As a lawyer, I have experience and knowledge relating to ordinances or other legal issues addressed by city council. I know how to work with others and reach resolutions on areas of disagreement. My opponent does not own property in District 2 and does not appear to have much of a presence in District 2. This raises concerns about his commitment to the district. Additionally, my opponent has had a lot of public controversy in his career in law enforcement, which is documented in news articles online and
Certification, continued.
obviously the Seguin location opened up in 2016 but I have multimillionaires that drive semis for me or fork lift because their stock in the company has evolved over the last 20 years into what they have now and our stock has increased 22 percent over the last 30 years and 30 percent over the last 10 years. So, it
What we don’t need are high-priced, selfserving attorneys using our little town as a stepping stone in their quest for power. This is a great town! Let’s make it better!!
I was born and raised in Seguin and my family still lives here. If elected I’ll support our local public schools, listen to what our citizens need, and work with city officials to create programs that help ease the burden of inflating food and utility costs, rent, and insurance for our cars, trucks and homes.
I have 25 years’ experience serving communities as a public servant. I am active in my church and community and am excited to help govern our town if elected, addressing current needs and especially planning for our future.
What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?
Our community has many challenges that need to be addressed. I can’t name all of them now in this forum, however I will mention we need to focus on rebuilding infrastructure, addressing waste management concerns, tackling economic development and we, as public servants, need to ensure
is well outperforming other stocks in the manufacturing sector that are publicly traded,” said Hahn.
Thomas Dudley, CEO and Cofounder of Certified EO, says they are excited to have Central States as their newest member.
The Certified EO program provides best practices, market insight, communication support, and a host of educational resources
we are completely transparent along the way. I will address all issues affecting my future constituents with honesty, integrity and will always stand up for this community for their best interests.
What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?
I believe my social interaction with the public and listening to all points of view will set me apart from my opponent. I won’t let special interests or selfish opportunistic service cloud my judgement for what’s right for all of us.
I would also like to see our first responders be seen as partners by our community and vice versa, not as the “us versus them” stigma that haunts many communities. Balancing budgets, spending within our means is also important to me and I feel that oversight and transparency is a must; to build rapport and public communication, trust is the key for any municipality.
Overall, I can’t wait to see the challenges we face and work with the community and other city council members to represent what a small, yet growing successful city looks like when it comes to city government.
to the companies it certifies.
Dudley adds,”Employee ownership changes the relationship between the company and employee. It’s a win-win-win for the employees, the business, and the community. As one of the fewer than 1 in 200 American companies eligible to join Certified EO, Central States stands out in promoting the power of employee
ownership. They’ve joined a growing community who are reshaping how businesses operate.”
Today, Central States provides financial freedom for 1,400 employee-owners across 13 locations nationwide, with two more manufacturing facilities set to open in 2025.
Central States is located in Seguin at 2902 North Heideke St.
