Teatro De Artes to unveil first community art exhibit

Mobile art piece to showcase Seguin's cultural diversity throughout the public

(Seguin) – Evidence of Seguin’s rich cultural diversity will begin rolling out thanks to a $50,000 grant designed to help the community better understand its history.

Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin is thrilled

to announce the unveiling of the first of threetraveling co-community creations of art exhibits made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) under the Our Town program. Teatro, pg. 4

Head Start program forced to close pre-k classroom

Families work to find alternate programs for local three-year olds

(Seguin) -- After just over two months, a group of 3-year-olds is having to say goodbye to school. The Community Council of South-Central Texas, which operates the Head Start Program in Seguin and neighboring communities, recently had to announce to the parents of one of its classes in Seguin that due to funding cuts by the federally operated Head Start office, it was forced to close one of its classrooms located in the center on North Austin Street.

CCSCT Executive Director Bobby Deike says the funding cuts reportedly resulted from the Head Start Office’s decision to change the enrollment number it was willing to fund.

“After we enrolled children for the new school year, we had enrolled 83 children for Head Start both here in Seguin and our New Braunfels Center, our New Braunfels ISD agreement at Lonestar Early Childhood and at our new ISD agreement with Navarro ISD. So, we had a total of 83. On Sept. 9, we received a formal letter from the office of Head Start informing us that they were reducing our enrollment to 69 slots and along with that, CCSCT would sustain a large cut in funding because of the reduction,” said Deike.

Deike says this news, which impacted its pre-school classroom, was a complete shock to

his office. He says there was no warning from the federal office in any way.

“We attended a number of national conferences where the federal office of Head Start out of Washington D.C. was in attendance and each presentation that that individual made – he stated that Head Start programs would not be affected by a reduction in funding. So, we were really blindsided by this letter on Sept. 9 that notified us that not only was the number of funded slots being reduced but also our funding was going to be reduced and so, that is why we had to make the decision we made. Screens ready to welcome films at Palace Theatre

(Seguin) – Film fanatics and moviegoers are invited to spend part of their Pecan Fest weekend inside the Palace Theatre.

The annual Seguin Film & Arts Festival, featuring films from around the world, returns to the Palace Theatre this Saturday.

Organizers say festival directors narrowed the 95 entries received to the 22 films being screened on Saturday.  Judges then chose the top films in each category.

The doors open at 10 a.m., with the first session of films beginning at 10:25 a.m.  This year’s festival starts with a film shot in and around Seguin, “The Castle of Baron Finch.”

The second session of the film festival kicks off at 11:30 a.m.

Following an afternoon break, the films return to the screen at 4 p.m.  The afternoon session includes the film “Babe Magnet” in which the cast includes Seguin actress Sheila Lucas.  Following this session, the public is encouraged to stick around for a Q & A with the filmmakers. After the Q & A, Casting Director Michael Druck will lead a discussion on casting for film directors.

Program, continued.

Unfortunately, that was the decision we had to make,” said Deike.

Now although the families of these 15 children are being forced to make alternate plans, Deike says the CCSCT wasted no time and moved forward with an appeal on Sept. 26. However, he says the results of that appeal won’t be decided on until 90 days from that date.

“We have taken the steps to attempt to reverse some of the decisions that the office of Head Start has made and so, now we are just having to wait until the office of Head Start meets their timeline to respond, hold the hearing and then hopefully make a decision to reinstate the slots and reinstate the funding so we can serve these children,” said Deike.

Meanwhile, Deike says this decision to close one of its classrooms

The final block of the day debuts at 6:30 p.m., with awards plus a filmmaker Q & A.  To check out the film line-up, visit SeguinFestival. org. The event is free.

has not been easy.

“It’s very concerning to us that we had to displace families from the Head Start Program. The office of

Head Start assured us that that was not their intent that any families would be displaced from the program so that is what we have been operating off of. It causes a negative effect for these families that CCSCT in no way wanted to have to deliver this news to the families. The children had acclimated to their classroom and to their teachers and to the center and looked forward to coming to the center every day to be with their friends and so it is quite upsetting that we are put in this situation by the office of Head Start to have to make this decision at the local level,” said Deike.

Since announcing its decision, the CCSCT says it has made itself available to support families during this transition by identifying alternative programs and resources. The local classroom officially closes on Oct. 31.

Navarro ISD Board of Trustees

The Seguin Daily News continues its highlight of the local candidates appearing on the November 5, 2024, General Election. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions. Today’s featured contest is the race for the one unexpired two year at-large trustee position on the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees. Early voting is now underway and runs through Friday, Nov.1.

Candidate: Jacob Coppedge

What initially inspired you to run for elected office?

Talking to the Current School Board President prior to putting in my application, she shared how rewarding the position can be in helping the students and school community progress. The School Board has been described as a thankless responsibility but I value servant leadership and volunteering.

Coppedge, pg. 4

Candidate: Matthew Reed

What initially inspired you to run for elected office?

Witnessing firsthand the changes we’ve seen in just a few short years, concerns over the direction we’re headed, and a strong desire to be more than a just a complaint on social media. But in all Honesty, a Facebook post on our Geronimo Parents page and the inability to keep my opinions to myself got me off my... seat... and into this race.

Reed, pg. 5

Candidate: Russell Trotti

What initially inspired you to run for elected office?

I was initially inspired to run for this school Board position because I wanted to be involved in what I truly believe is a pivotal and very important time at Navarro ISD with the Growth and many new endeavors this ISD has taken on. We have tons of new students coming into Navarro, we have new schools and facilities being built and

Trotti, pg. 4

Candidate: Joel Frederick

What initially inspired you to run for elected office?

People in the Geronimo Navarro community have asked if I would run for the school board for the last few election cycles, and now just feels like the right time. I served as a volunteer/officer for the Panther Posse Boosters, Navarro Athletic Boosters, and FFA Boosters. To support the growth of the district, I served on the ’17,’21, and ‘23 Long-Term Planning Committees.

Frederick, pg. 5

What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?

The biggest challenges are the increased growth in student enrollment that will put stress on the current school buildings, staff and programs and to continue to provide the high level of education that Navarro is known for. Being fiscally responsible and keeping the growing district on budget will be a challenge, but as a Plant Manager operating a business that has had large growth spans, I have experienced similar challenges.

I build lasting relationships with people and connecting directly with what matters to them, being a good listener.

What do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

I give of my time to benefit youth directly and strive to invest in youth by mentoring to get them thinking about college and career options following Navarro. I also have young kids in the district and my family specifically moved to Navarro to raise our kids in the great programs Navarro offers. Being involved to continue those is my goal.

Teatro, continued.

The first piece in the inaugural exhibit, created by Indigenous artist Ruben Esquivel, will be revealed at 12:30 pm this Sunday, October 27 at the Teatro De Artes Cultural Arts Center.

Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin was among 57 recipients nationwide and one of only three Texas organizations to receive this prestigious funding, totaling $4.1 million. The grant is dedicated to supporting the project “Our Town - Sharing of People, Places, Culture, and Stories through Art

planned out, we have many new administration members with different visions, we have many new programs and opportunities being implemented, planned and designed for the students of Navarro ISD and all this while still maintaining the academic excellence Navarro has always been known for. So in my thoughts it was why not get involved and lend a hand in sculpting the future of Navarro ISD and our children’s future.

What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?

Navarro ISD has become a very diverse melting pot of vision, thought and action and the biggest challenge to any new board member of Navarro ISD is going to be the navigation of working with others with different goals, visions, priorities and thoughts while still maintaining their own. I look forward to this as that is what growth is about; being open and looking at challenges from all aspects to include other people’s perspective and taking that collective thought and making educated decisions as a team on a path forward. New members bring fresh ideals and fresh ways of attacking issues and providing solutions and I truly believe this is what Navarro ISD needs.

What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

I believe I am the best candidate for this position because I have no intention of bringing an agenda to this position. I am merely offering my years of experience in business and team building and team operations to utilize in the decision making processes of Navarro ISD School Board for the children of the school district, which should always be the focus and goal. I set myself apart from my opponents because I look at this position as an opportunity for what we can do and not what I currently hear so much from current members about what we can’t do.

Creation in Seguin.”

In collaboration with the City of Seguin, Seguin Public Library, and Seguin Main Street, this project focuses on amplifying the voices and stories of Seguin’s communities of color, including the African American, Mexican American/Tejano, and Native American/Indigenous communities. Over the past 15 months, Teatro has actively engaged residents through six community pláticas (conversations) to gather invaluable stories that reflect the diverse social fabric of Seguin.

Three artists — including Esquivel, Howard

Crunk, and Debora Kuetzpal Vásquez — were commissioned to participate in community discussions to best plan for what traveling installations will circulate throughout the Seguin community. These mobile art installations will be making stops at local schools, museums, banks, businesses, universities, non-profit organizations, and other public spaces for all to enjoy.

Seeing this project come to fruition has become bittersweet for Teatro De Artes Executive Director Yvonne De La Rosa.

Teatro, pg. 5

Coppedge, continued.
Trotti, continued.

What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?

Growth and Teacher Retention: With 10,000 + new homes proposed in the coming years (I think the number is much higher but I need to confirm what i’ve researched) and at least that amount built within the last two or three years, our community is experiencing growth like never before. Communication and Collaboration with our local and state governments will be vital in ensuring our district has an infrastructure not only capable of handling this influx of new families, but one that is able to grow and meet future demands. We can’t promise a successful future if we aren’t preparing for it now.

As the Product of a family of teachers, I should know what it takes to keep our teachers in Navarro. I don’t... Yet. I don’t know what draws new teachers in or makes veteran teachers never want to leave but, elected or not, I intend to answer that question.

What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

I don’t believe I’m the best candidate for the Job. There are several seeking reelection that have far more experience than I do as well as several running their first campaign that have been directly involved with NISD for years.

What I do believe sets me apart is determination, decisiveness, the willingness to work with anyone, and the ability to bring people together for a common goal. I want to see stronger community engagement in our district, and I feel I can encourage that.

Teatro, continued.

Dr. De La Rosa says she wrote the grant alongside her mom, Teatro Co-Founder Vickie De La Rosa, before she passed away in April 2023.

“My mom would be so proud that this project weaves the culturally diverse stories of Seguin into the fabric of our community through art that will now be shared for generations to come,” said De La Rosa.

As for this first art project, De La Rosa says

So ultimately, this seems like the next logical step in serving the community.

What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?

I love this community! So continuing service to the community and to Navarro means that I am dedicated to moving the district back to the standard of excellence in all programs that was once a priority for the district. At one point Navarro excelled at all programs. I want to help and guide the district back to a level of excellence where all programs are recognized. We have made great strides in the past year and a half, and we cannot stop now. Of course, safety and security are a top priority. I would like to make sure we are always seeking new ways to enhance our children’s safety. Fiscal responsibility is another area that we need to consistently be transparent about and this past year, the board has been very transparent. We are one of the few schools in Texas not operating in a deficit budget. Some schools will be going to voters for a VATR – Voter Approved Tax Rate. We need to maintain our fiscal responsibility. I also want to find ways to help increase CTE/Trade programs at the high school. I would love to see Navarro win the UIL Lone Star Cup for 4A, which is an award for the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas.

What do you believe makes you the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

In addition to my service to the school directly, I’ve served within Navarro, Geronimo, and Guadalupe County for years. I served and still serve as a coach for Navarro youth. I am currently an officer for Geronimo Lions Club and a director for the Guadalupe County Youth Show. I’ve made relationships in these organizations, through Navarro and throughout my professional career. I am involved in several chambers of commerce, including Seguin and New Braunfels. As a business owner, I understand financial responsibility, but I also recognize the need for college readiness, trade programs, and most importantly, teamwork. I also think my experience lobbying in Austin for my business organizations can help with relationships with our state leaders. I believe that is the well-rounded experience we need on the school board.

Esquivel, the NEA Our Town Native American/ Indigenous Artist in Residence, has taken a unique approach to telling the stories through his captivating installment. “Ruben’s art will truly capture the story, beauty, harmonious living with the land as well as capture the warrior and peaceful spirit of the Native American/Indigenous of our community,” said De La Rosa.

Also excited for the art installation and what it means for the city of Seguin is Mayor Donna Dodgen.

“The City of Seguin is honored to be a partner in this wonderful project. We encourage community members to join us for the unveiling of Esquivel’s artwork and be part of a celebration that honors Seguin’s shared history and diverse population, “said Dodgen.

The other two Our Town art creations are set to be unveiled one by one in 2025, including the NEA Our Town Mexican-American/Tejano installation by artist Debora Kuetzpal Vásquez and the NEA Our Town African-American installation created by artist Howard Crunk.

Study Finds Rise In Baby Deaths Since Overturning Of Roe V. Wade

(Washington, DC) -- New research out of Ohio State University reveals a higher than expected rise in baby deaths across the U.S. since the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. In October of 2022 and March and April of 2023, nearly 250 additional deaths were recorded on average per month,. Researchers found a seven-percent spike in the few months that were studied after the Dobbs decision overturned Roe Vs. Wade. The vast majority of the baby deaths were caused by congenital abnormalities which previously would’ve led to an abortion. Researchers say their findings could be just the tip of the iceberg since more states implemented restrictions in the months after their study ended.
