Residents prepare to go nuts Council makes offer to new city manager candidate during Pecan Fest 2019 council sifted through nearly 40 applicants as part of a process that took five months to complete. Seguin Mayor Don Keil says he's thrilled with the selection, and he believes that Parker is the right choice to lead Seguin into the future.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin is going nuts over the list of events for this year's Pecan Fest and Heritage Days celebration. Pecan Fest 2019 is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and Convention Visitors Bureau director, says Pecan Fest is not only about pecans. He says it's about celebrating everything that makes this community great. "The Pecan Fest is Seguin's annual celebration of our famous pecan as well as all of our history and heritage and it just so happens to fall the last weekend of October which is also Juan Seguin's birthday weekend as well. So, we have a lot to celebrate," said Kramm. Friday's schedule kicks off with the Seguin Art League Paint Out. Be prepared to see easels spread out all over historic downtown Seguin as
Kramm says the first 150 registered participants to check in at Central Park from 7:30 to 10 p.m. will receive a complimentary gift. The best part, he says, is that the Pub Crawl is free and will continue until 11 p.m. Saturday's schedule kicks off bright and early with the annual Healthy Nut Run. The event begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. at Max Starcke Park. The 5K and Kids mile are being hosted by the Seguin Education Foundation, the Seguin ISD and the city of Seguin. Other events include the 18th Annual Wilson Pottery Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sebastopol House and Fire Prevention at the Heritage Museum with photos on Seguin’s vintage fire truck from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The museum is located at 114 N. River St. The schedule also includes free Magnolia Hotel Open House Tours from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Trade Days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Central Park, the Heritage Village Open House from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 213 E. Live Oak St. and the memorial remembrance hostedby Juan N. Seguin’s ancestors at Juan Seguin's gravesite. See PECANS, page 7

Steve Parker By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The Seguin City Council thinks its found the right person to replace retiring City Manager Doug Faseler. The city announced in a press release on Thursday that Steve Parker, 48, was the top choice for the job. Parker is currently the assistant city manager for the city of San Marcos. The city has formally extended an offer to Parker. If he accepts, the council is expected to meet on Tuesday to officially approve the hire. The
"He had such a complete portfolio of experience for one thing and he had so many people who wrote letters that he had worked with to back him up on it and when we interviewed him, he was not hesitant about answering anything that we asked. He seemed to have had a complete knowledge of virtually everything necessary to run a city both from a personal point of view as well as from a financial and economic development point of view. The basis were all covered there. He is a very well capable guy and I think his ability to deal with people, to talk with people both employees and I think citizens in the city, I think will do him well and I know that once folks get to start dealing with him and know him, I think the city will embrace them as well," said Keil. Parker says he thrilled about this opportunity,
and he hopes that he can come to terms with the city and get the deal finalized on Tuesday. "I've been with the city of San Marcos for 13 years now. I was here four years in the 90’s. So almost 17 years total, with the city of San Marcos and had come up through the ranks. I have a big financial background, but really what started interesting me about Seguin was their focus on core services - police, fire, streets, maintenance and so forth, and then their success at economic development. I started to see some of the things that they were putting together. I felt that Seguin could be something really special and it really peaked my interest. I really had no intention of leaving San Marcos for a while. I had been recruited by some other cities, but I knew that if I did make that move, I would want to stay in this area, because I love the Central Texas area, and the more and more I started to look at that opportunity, to me, it became a no brainer that I've got to take that next level of my career in a place that has so much potential," said Parker.

They can bring it Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. or from 8:30 to 10 o'clock Saturday morning. They can get a form off of the internet if they go to our website. We give prizes for youth and adult. Tickets still available for Johnny Cash Tribute Band By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Get ready to walk the line this weekend all the way to the Palace Theatre. The Walkin' The Line “Johnny Cash” Tribute band featuring Bennie Wheels will be performing this Saturday night in the downtown theatre. Wheels tells the Seguin Daily News that his band has been recognized as the "ultimate tribute" to not only Johnny Cash but also to June Carter and The Tennessee Three. Wheels says he is honored to bring the legendary singer and his music back to life. He says after years of performing, he is grateful for the opportunity to at least "try"

to fill his shoes. "I fell into it by accident. I started off with an Elvis tribute because I was a big Elvis fan and did really well with that for many years and then the movie 'Walk the Line' came out and it just kind of captured my interest and then I ended up taking the tour there in Memphis and concentrated on Johnny Cash and I just decided to add that to my repertoire of doing the tribute so I decided to do that and learned how to play guitar and it kind of took off from there," said Wheels. Whether it be hits like "Ring of Fire” or "Folsom Prison Blues," Wheels says his plan is always to not disappoint. "I'm very for-
tunate to have great musicians that play it and they take it as serious as I do. We don't try to put in any kind of modern twist or our own personal twist on the music. We just respect it and keep it as sincere and as authentic as possible for fans just the way they remember it and I do the best that I can to give folks kind of a glimpse of what a live concert with Johnny Cash might have been like," said Wheels. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Presale tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet or online at m.bpt.me. Show time is at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Palace located at 314 S. Austin St.

Saints Alive! this weekend Seguin invited to celebrate inauguration at Riverside Cemetery of TLU’s 16th President By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin this weekend will officially welcome and celebrate the leadership of Texas Lutheran University's 16th president. An invitation is being extended to the community for this Saturday's Inauguration Ceremony of Dr. Debbie Cottrell.
By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- History comes to life this weekend in Seguin. Saints Alive is an annual event produced by The Affiliation for the Preservation of Shakespeare and Federated Club Rooms, and the city of Seguin. The event features the dramatic portrayals of six historic Seguin citizens who are buried at the city's Riverside Cemetery. Each year, the event is offered on the final day of the Pecan Fest/Heritage Days weekend. Sudie Bruns again helped to organize this year's Saints Alive. She says this started as a fundraiser for their club rooms and grew into something that the community really seems to enjoy. "It's the best chance for people in Seguin tp get to know the founders of Seguin, because the Riverside Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Seguin. The people that are buried there are among some of the most famous and

Matadors march into Dripping Springs chasing sole possession of first place, Friday's game to air on KWED Sophomore Clark Ullrich (36 rec., 450 yds., 6 TD) has emerged as Mickles' top receiver, with Tristan Moreno (11 rec., 245 yds. 2 TD) and tight end Jonathan Patterson (21 rec., 322 yds., 4 TD) coming on strong while early-season star Dravan McKnight has nursed an injury.
(Dripping Springs) - A year after Seguin wrestled the outright District 12-5ADivision I lead from Dripping Springs in a 42-39 overtime thriller at Matador Stadium, the teams find themselves in the same Week 9 scenario on the Tigers' home field. Seguin (4-3) and Dripping Springs (6-1) are both 4-0 in district play, a game ahead of third-place Austin-LBJ (3-1), who dropped a 17-14 nail-biter to the Tigers two weeks ago.
Junior running back Marques Washington (945 yds., 13 TD) is only 55 rushing yards away from 1,000 this season.
Seguin staved off Austin-McCallum 40-14 last Friday, while Dripping Springs blanked Austin-Navarro 46-0. The Tigers' only loss came by a single point, 22-21 to Buda-Hays on Sept. 6.
Both defenses have been dominant against district competition. Seguin, paced by sophomore linebacker John Michael Mata (80 tackles), sophomore defensive end Ian Box (5.5 sacks, 18 TFL), junior cornerback Micah Rodriguez (2 INT), and senior cornerback Desvonn Smith (9 pass breakups) has only allowed three offensive touchdowns against four district opponents.
Galen Zimmerman, 42-12 in less than five full seasons at Dripping Springs, has utilized two quarterbacks in 2019. Sophomore Preston Alford has emerged as the most productive with 545 yards and three touchdowns through the air to go with 469 yards and 10 scores on the ground. Junior Cameron O'Banan has thrown for 269 yards and four touchdowns, and has also been Alford's top receiver with 15 catches for 204 yards. Running-back Curtis Cox enters Friday with a team-high 480 rushing yards and five touchdowns. As has been the case in recent years, a stout offensive line is the glue that holds the Dripping Springs offense together. "They're going to be big, and they do a good job," Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. "Offensively, we're very similar.
Sophomore receiver Clark Ullrich leads Seguin in receptions (36), receiving yards (450) and touchdown catches (6) through seven games of the regular season. Photo by Dustin Wyatt. Schematically, whether it's run or pass, they're going to kind of take what the defense gives you, so they're going to have a good plan. Both of those guys, Alford and O'Bannan, they're both going to go quarterback and receiver, and whatever they feel is going to give them the best matchup to win, they'll stick with."
Seguin counters with a balanced offense churning out 207 rushing yards and 246 passing yards per game. Senior quarterback Jhalen Mickles threw five touchdown passes last Friday against McCallum, lifting his season totals to 1,040 yards and 11 scores with a 70 percent completion rate and just one interception.
Dripping Springs, led by senior linebackers Hunter Northrup (8.7 tackles per game) and Jakob Joy (All-Dist., 7.4 tackles per game), and returning All-District cornerback Andres Flores Perry, has only allowed 9.8 points per game in district play and held an Austin-LBJ squad averaging 34.3 points to just 14 on Oct. 11. Friday's kickoff at Tiger Stadium in Dripping Springs is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 with the Navarro, Marion, and Lifegate coaches' shows.

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Lifegate hosts Mount Carmel in Saturday six-man tilt Panthers host Texans in (Seguin) - The Lifegate six-man football team looks for its third straight win Saturday when Mount Carmel Academy makes the trip from Houston to Falcon Field in Seguin. The 6-2 Falcons shut out Austin-Harmony 50-0 last Friday, while the 2-5 Mount Carmel Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak
with a 44-33 win over Sanchez. Lifegate gained 248 of its 273 total yards on the ground against Harmony, but head coach John Stout says the attack could be more balanced Saturday based on Mount Carme's defensive tendencies. "They do a pretty good job of covering the run, but as far as the pass, they don't do that well they kind of bite too much on the run, and then the pass is side open," Stout said. "So we're probably going to get a lot of passing yards this game. I think we'll get the rushing yards too, but if we have to, we'll go to the pass." The Falcons' senior spread-back Quinten
Shellnut has excelled in both phases, completing 61 percent of his passes for 639 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception while gashing defenses for 1,379 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns on 124 carries (11.1 avg.). He also leads the defense with 55 tackles and two interceptions. Lifegate's other statistical leaders include Barson Schmidt (16 rec., 6 sacks, 2 INT), and Zach McCulloch (194 rec. yds., 4 TD).
(Geronimo) - La Vernia clinched the top volleyball playoff seed in District 30-4A and locked Navarro into second place Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep of the Panthers at the Saturday's kickoff at Falcon Field is set for 5 Navarro Events p.m. A complete interview with Stout can be Center in Geronimo. heard Friday between 6:45 and 7:00 during the Falcon Report on KWED 1580-AM and The Bears won the Seguintoday.com. individual sets 2516, 25-21, and 2517.
Marion volleyball drops tight match to Randolph (Marion) - Marion missed an opportunity to climb up the District 263A standings Tuesday night in a five-set home loss to Randolph.
Hayley Mabee collected 14 digs, and Ingrid Nava chipped in with 13. Molly Rooke, Kaylie Miller, and Toryn Autry each recorded a solo block.
The Bulldogs dropped the first set 25-7, won the next two 25-23, 2522, lost the fourth 25-18, and came up short in the fifth and deciding frame 15-12. Madyson Schulze totaled six kills on the night. Lizzie Abrameit distributed 17 assists. Madison Doss added 10 assists and dominated at the service line with 10 aces.
Marion is still in fourth place with a 4-4 district record. The Bulldogs, 17-18 overall, host Comfort on Friday at 5 p.m.
Texas Lutheran hunts sixth straight win in ASC visit to Sul Ross State, Saturday game to air on KWED (Alpine) - For the second straight Saturday, Texas Lutheran looks to stay unbeaten in American Southwest Conference play against an opponent that has visibly improved this season after struggling in 2018. TLU (5-1, 5-0 ASC) takes a fivegame winning streak to Alpine for a conference matchup with 3-3 Sul Ross State at Jackson Field. The Lobos went 1-9 last year. Second-year head coach Carl Gustafson's Bulldogs staved off Howard Payne's upset bid 27-14 in Brownwood last week. SRSU, led by sixth-year coach John Pearce, earned its second straight win on the road and moved to 3-2 in the ASC with a 34-13 rout of Louisiana College.
Sul Ross State ranks at the bottom of the conference in scoring (13.8) and total offense (245.7), but those stats are a bit skewed by the first two games of the season - a 64-0 loss to Hardin Simmons and a 72-0 defeat at the hands of Division II Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Lobos feature the ASC's second leading rusher in Williton Grear (643 yds., 4 TD), and the conference's No. 9 receiver in Dre'Chon Moody (22 rec., 266 yds., 2 TD). Grear carved up the LC defense for 252 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries last week. Quarterback Trey Johns threw for 150 yards and two scores. Sul Ross State's winning record in conference play has come on the strength of a defense that has surrendered seven, nine, and 13 points in wins over McMurry, Southwestern, and LC. Freshman linebacker Levah Terry ranks third in the ASC with an average of nine

tackles per game, while freshman defensive back Isaiah Jacobs has three interceptions to share the conference lead with TLU safety Daniel Enriquez. On the season, the Lobos have struggled to stop the run, ranking ninth in the ASC with 244.8 rushing yards allowed per game. That should bode well for a TLU offense rolling up 34.2 points (3rd), 416.8 total yards (3rd) and 262.8 rushing yards (2nd) per outing. The Bulldogs boast three of the league's top seven rushers in Chris Monroe (416 yds., 3 TD), quarterback Wade Freeman (408 yds., 5 TD), and Austin Matthews (379 yds., 4 TD). Freeman has been an efficient passer as well, comleting 67 percent for 832 yards, nine touchdowns, and no interceptions. His passer efficiency rating of 164.3 ranks third in the ASC. Mason Perkins (25 rec.,
314 yds., 2 TD), and C.J. Romero (6 TD) have been Freeman's top targes. The TLU defense continues to lead the conference in turnover margin (+15) and ranks second nationally in that department. The Bulldogs' 19 takeaways represent the highest total in the ASC and the 11th most in Division III football, and they share the national lead in defensive touchdowns with four. Texas Lutheran is 17-18 all-time against Sul Ross State, but the Bulldogs have won the last five meetings by an average margin of 31.4 points, including a 63-20 rout in Seguin last season. Saturday's kickoff at Jackson Field in Alpine is slated for 6 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 5:30.
Kelly Helms put away 10 kills and registered two block assists to lead Navarro's front row, but the Panthers only hit .093 for the match. Sara Benner set for 26 assists and recorded two solo blocks. Benner,
Madison McCaig, Carolyn Burch, and Kaitlin Menchaca each delivered one service ace. Burch came up with 17 digs, Ashley Gosch 14, Nelly Brumley 11, and Benner 10. Hoffman and McCaig each had a solo block and a block assist. Navarro, ranked No. 12 in this week's TGCA state poll for Class 4A, is 9-2 in district play, 32-8 overall. La Vernia, ranked No. 4, moved to 10-0 in district, 40-5 on the season. The Panthers conclude the district schedule Friday with a 6 p.m. road match in Cuero.

Turkey lunch, hay dive, archery among the events BARN continued from page 2 "On the outside, we will have for children up to 12 years old something called the Hay Dive. We will dig around in a pile of straw for a pecan and the pecans -- there are three colors. They've been painted and everybody gets a prize of some sort. The colors will designate what level of prize and it only cost them a quarter. We know kids will enjoy that" said Willmann. Although there is no cost to come out and check out the Big Red Barn and pecan museum, the group will still be looking for some support as it host its annual turkey plate sale beginning at 11:30 a.m. Plate tickets are $15 each. The group will also offer a hot dog lunch for kids. Willmann says proceeds raised from the meal go to support the educational center year round.
There's no entry fee. There's no parking fees. This is a fundraiser for us and the fundraiser part of it is the meal that we serve and we are serving turkey which is being prepared by The Lunch Box. They do a wonderful job with their food and the dessert is included in the price and the dessert comes from the baking contest," said Willmann. The Big Red Barn which also dubs itself as being home to the "Real" Big Pecan will also feature area vendors and will also include a presentation by Troy Swift, owner of Swift River Pecans in Fentress and a champion winner in this year's Texas Pecan Show. A free shuttle service will also be transporting residents to and from downtown Seguin to the Big Red Barn. The Big Red Barn is located at 390 Cordova Rd. She enjoyed living on Lake McQueeney; being involved in her church; and being a part of the Seguin community. She loved deeply and was loved deeply – she will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, with Reverend Gordon Scheible officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall. As one of her final requests, she asked that all who wish to honor her do so by embracing her passion for education and reading a book to a child. Marion’s family wishes to thank the many medical professionals and caregivers who kept her healthy and enabled her to live at home. Of special note are those who served her so well in her final months: Visiting Angels and their caregivers Marie Murrell and Mickie Teagarden; Hope Hospice and staff; and Dr. Antonio Alvarado and his staff. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
AB enjoyed his time with Prison Ministry Fellowship and giving to his community. He was known to carry $100 bills in his wallet as he looked for opportunities to bless a stranger or friend in need. As a teacher and football/basketball coach in Victoria, Port Lavaca, and the San Antonio area, AB is fondly remembered by many. A private family service will be held in Nocona, TX. Memorial contributions may be made to any masonic charity of choice. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Measles Scare At Disneyland After Infected Guest Visits Park
FDA Calling For New Label On Breast Implants
(Anaheim, CA) -- There's a measles scare at Disneyland after an infected guest visits the park. The Los Angeles County Health Department say the visitor, who's a local, went to a Starbucks in West Los Angeles on October 16th and then spent the day in Disneyland. Health officials say anyone at those locations on that day may be at risk of developing measles for 21 days. It's an airborne illness spread through coughing and sneezing. People concerned about exposure are being urged to monitor themselves for fever, cough, red watery eyes and an unexplained rash.
(Undated) -- The Food and Drug Administration is calling for a new boxed warning label on breast implants. According to reports, the recommendation is for a warning that says breast implants have been associated with the development of a cancer of the immune system. They also recommend stating that implants are not meant to be "lifetime devices." Another suggestion by officials is for doctors to implement a decision checklist for patients to make sure they understand the risks.
Reports Cites Problem Of Collisions Between Trains And Kids Amazon Buys Start-Up Health Navigator (Washington, DC) -- Every five days here in America, a child ages nineteen and under is killed by a train. That's according to Safe Kids Worldwide which has issued a report telling parents that it can take a mile for a heavy freight train to stop once a locomotive engineer spots a car or people on the tracks. The non-profit group is urging parents to teach their kids to obey railroad crossing gates and lights to avoid using cellphones or headphones near railroad tracks.
(Seattle, WA) -- Amazon is making another purchase in the healthcare services industry. The e-commerce giant announced it has acquired Health Navigator, a company that helps provide digital health information. Amazon says Health Navigator will be part of a medical benefit for its employees called Amazon Care. This is Amazon's second health-related acquisition after buying PillPack last year.
