Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- If you want to be considered for that vacant spot on the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees, then Friday is the deadline.
Seguin ISD continues to accept applications for its District 1 seat, which will be vacant after the Nov. 5, 2024 election.
No one filed to run for the seat in the Nov election. That filing deadline was back on Aug. 19.
Current District 1 trustee, Board Vice President Carl Jenkins,
TLU, continued.
has chosen not to run for reelection – leaving this position open for appointment.
Eligible candidates must live in District 1, between TX-46 and Kingsbury Road, up to the district’s northern boundary line.
Seguin ISD District 1 residents interested in serving on the district’s school board are invited to send a letter of interest and a resume to p-n-ramirez@seguin.k12.tx.us by 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 25.
His leadership at TLU’s annual Front Row Gala, featuring sports legends such as Troy Aikman, Charles Barkley, Terry Bradshaw, and Roger Clemens, has provided tremendous support for TLU athletics for more than 20 years.
The nearly 10,000 square foot building will house a conditioning and weight room for student-athletes as well as locker rooms for the women’s soccer and softball teams.
The center, which will be located on the north side of campus near the current athletics facilities, will also free up space in the existing Jones Physical Education Complex, allowing for locker rooms for visiting athletic teams.
The groundbreaking is set for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Leading the construction will be The Koehler Company. The
Trustees will review submissions and conduct interviews with selected candidates on Nov. 6. The board plans to appoint the new District 1 trustee at its Nov. 19 regular school board meeting.
The appointed trustee will serve the full four-year term, which expires in November 2028.
Maps of the Seguin ISD singlemember districts are online on the district’s website.
project is expected to be completed by late summer 2025. Meanwhile, Donley says the groundbreaking is all part of the Homecoming fun that is slated throughout the weekend.
“There will be a Bulldog Palooza on the library lawn at 7 o’clock on Friday evening and that’s a beer garden and food trucks and games and all kinds of things. There’s an Off the Leash 5K that everyone is welcome to register for. It’s at 9 o’clock in the morning on Saturday and people can go to our website to register for that. We’ve got a tailgate party from noon to 4 p.m. The best part is of course the football game. The TLU Bulldogs will be going up against McMurry University at 4 o’clock in Bulldog Stadium. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend,” said Donley.
A complete list of Homecoming activities can be found on the TLU website.
Pecan Fest, continued.
We will have some prizes for the best hats and at check-in, we will take a look at your hat, take down your information and if you win, we will give you a call and we will get you your prize. We will also have some special prizes for the first 100 people who check in for the pub crawl. If you go to five or more bars, you just drop off the pub crawl passport at your last stop and then, we will have a drawing from those passports and they will also win some prizes,” said Kramm. “You don’t even have to buy drinks or beverages at the participating locations. You just go from spot to spot and the bartenders and staff will have stickers to put on your passports.”
Kramm says the celebration continues Saturday with a host of fun activities such as shopping, live entertainment, historic tours, tasty treats, a pecan crackin’ contest and live entertainment throughout Central Park.
“Saturday morning, we’ve got downtown our Fall Trade Days Festival where we have about 20 to 30 vendors selling pecan items and then we also have the Heritage Museum open with the antique fire truck. The Wilson Pottery Show has relocated from the Sebastopol House to the Heritage Village this year since the Sebastopol House is under construction right now. We are excited to have the pottery show downtown. We also have at the Palace Theatre the Seguin Film & Arts Festival so there will be short films and feature films throughout the day being shown there and even some made by local filmmakers. A new event that is coming this year is the Seguin Family that will be hosting “For Whom the Bell Tolls” at the burial site of Juan Seguin and so everyone is invited to come there and participate with the Seguin family,” said Kramm.
This year’s live downtown music entertainment includes Eric Sebastian from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and The Clint Taft and The Buckwild Band from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Those who also think they can crack the most pecans in two minutes are also asked to sign up for this year’s contest beginning at noon Saturday. Sign up is now underway at the Seguin Visitor Center located at 200 S. Austin St.
Pecan Fest events will also be in full force from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. over at the Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center also known as the Big Red Barn. The Texas Pecan Museum, of course, will also be open.
In fact, a free shuttle service will be provided to get folks back and forth from the Big Red Barn and downtown Seguin.
Activities include square dance demonstrations, fiddlers, an antique tractor pull, a pecan baking contest, children’s activities, market vendors, photos with a human sized squirrel plus various other displays and events throughout the barn.
Other events throughout the weekend include free tours of The Magnolia Hotel and the Saints Alive Cemetery Tours at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the Riverside Cemetery.
A full list of Pecan Fest events can be found at www.seguingonuts.com.
Tours, continued.
Maddox says she especially looks forward to introducing Saints Alive to new members of the community. She says the live portrayals of the historic Seguin Citizens should unveil some unique and interesting findings.
“This time, we will be involving nine saints because one is a couple, the Noltes who are very prominent in the founding of Seguin, the establishment of Seguin. The tour works because when you arrive, you will be assigned to a group. We will divide everyone up in small groups and then when it is time to start, a guide will take you around the trail to all the different sites that we are featuring and there you will find the Saints themselves, the dearly departed souls, standing at their graves ready to greet you and tell
you all about their life and life in Seguin and the surrounding area many years ago,” said Maddox.
The featured Seguin Citizens on this year’s list include Dick Campbell; Alexander Erskine; Amada Gonzales; John Jefferson; former Mayor Betty Jean Jones; Samuel Millet; Eugene and Claudia Nolte and Calvin Williams.
The tours begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Riverside Cemetery located at 201 E. Klein St. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased in advance at Gift & Gourmet, Court Street Coffee Shop; Keepers and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. Tickets will also be sold at the gate.
Due to limited parking around the cemetery, a free park and ride shuttle service is being offered this year in the Seguin Coliseum parking lot.

Born on May 2, 1945, in Lake Forest, Illinois, to Joseph and Sylvia Bousson. Dennis, affectionately known as Denny, was a man whose life was marked by his deep love for his family, his passion for his work, and the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures.
A proud Electrician throughout his career, Denny started his career as a member of IBEW Local 150 in Illinois before working in Texas. Denny’s zest for life extended to his love of storytelling and laughter. A conversation with him was never dull, and his friendly, loving nature made him a kindred spirit to many. His love for cookies was legendary; he could polish off a plateful in one sitting, much to the delight and amusement of his family, who
his paternal and maternal grandparents, and his long-time partner, Colie. His departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who knew and loved him. Rory’s spirit and charisma will be remembered with warmth and fondness by his numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

His friendships reached far and wide, from Bobby Barrett and Jack Shaer in Illinois to friends and neighbors including Robert and Joy Steffens of Seguin, not to mention the group at the Whataburger in Seguin, where he relished good conversation and company.
Denny is survived by his loving family: his brother Joe (Vicki) Bousson; brother-in-law Eugene May; sister-in-law Marge Bousson; and numerous nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Denny.
