Matadors seek 2-0 district start in first meeting with neighboring N.B.-Canyon since 2011 Canyon’s version of the pistol offense is designed to overpower defenses at the line of scrimmage, churn out rushing yards, and chew up the clock with time consuming drives.
Nate Langford’s unit should benefit from the return of starting middle linebacker John Michael Mata, who missed the Veterans Memorial game with an injury.
The Cougars often operate with two blocking backs and a tight end, or vice versa, and only one receiver split wide. Senior tailback Micah Williford has been the biggest beneficiary of that attack with 505 rushing yards (6.9 per carry) and nine touchdowns. He also leads the team in receiving with 152 yards and a score on six catches. Senior quarterback Dallas Gomez has thrown the ball sparingly, completing 17 of his 27 attempts for 245 yards and a touchdown through four games.
The Matadors look to continue their offensive momentum against a Canyon defense that didn’t allow more than 12 points before last week’s district opener against Dripping Springs. Senior linebackers Caden Holt (40 tackles) and Alex Bouloubasis (2 INT), and sophomore defensive lineman Daniel Perez (4 TFL, 2 sacks) lead the Cougars on that side of the ball.
The Seguin defense will be prepared to face a different look than the spread version of the pistol run by Veterans Memorial last week.

Photo by Andie Rangel. (New Braunfels) - Despite New BraunfelsCanyon being geographically closer to Seguin High School than any other 5A or 6A school on the map, the Matadors and Cougars haven’t faced each other in a football game since the 2011 season. That changes Friday when Seguin makes the 14-mile drive for a District 12-5A-Division I clash at Cougar Stadium.
Seguin will test Canyon with an explosive and balanced offense centered around the efficiency of quarterback Micah Rodriguez and the versatility of running-back Marques Washington. Rodriguez has completed 78 percent of his passes for 702 yards, nine touchdowns (to six different receivers), and three interceptions while running for two scores as well. Washington leads the Matadors in rushing with 321 yards and two touchdowns, and in receiving with 207 yards and three scores on 15 catches.
“They’re going to have a lot more size,” Bush said. “Different dynamic in the offense, but they’re going to pack them in the box, and really just try to bully you and run over you, and they’re district play under fifth-year head coach big enough to do it. Navarro fills schedule void with non-district visit to Houston Christian
(Houston) With the District 14-4A-Division II championship and top playoff seed clinched and the only district game remaining against San Antonio-YMLA next week, Navarro decided to fill the open date in its football schedule with a non-district road game against Houston Christian on Friday.
The Panthers had the option of adding an extra game to reach a total of 10 for the regular season because the orginally scheduled Week 1 contest against Port Lavaca-Calhoun was cancelled due to COVID-19. Navarro heads to Houston’s AVEVA Stadium with a 6-2 record in Rod Blount’s third season as head coach after surviving Wimberley’s late rally 24-22 in the district title clash last Friday. A total of 15 different Panthers
have scored at least one touchdown this season. The most prolific offense weapon has been senior tailback Sam Muniga with a team-high 779 rushing yards (9.99 per carry) and eight touchdowns to go with 188 receiving yards and three scores on 11 catches. The deep list of skill players who have been vital cogs in the machine also includes quarterback Nick Billings (678 total yds. 13 total TD), halfback Brody Whitson (561 yds., 8 TD), and fullbacks Orlando Ortiz and Zeke Campos (6 TD each). Houston Christian is 0-3 this season, falling to Tomball Christian 27-21, Hitchcock 62-35, and Woodlands-Cooper 16-3.
has completed 58 percent of his throws for 681 yards, but with six interceptions. Senior running-back Zach Munton has been the drive finisher with a team-high six rushing touchdowns.
“They have a lot of really good schemes and stuff that kind of puts our defense in a bind,” Blount said. “Some of their passing concepts are really good, and their quarterback and receiver are as good as we’ve seen. They can really light it up, and throw and catch the ball. Twenty-eight (Munton) is a heck of a back. When he gets the ball, he’s going to be running downhill, picking up yardage.”

Bulldogs visit Ro-Haws in district Friday game with playoff implications Schedule
(Universal City) - Marion looks to clinch a berth in the UIL football playoffs Friday night with District 14-3A-Division I road win over Randolph in Universal City.
Jourdanton (5-0) has already clinched the top playoff seed, and Poteet (4-1) is in the driver’s seat for second place. Lytle has completed its regular season with a 3-3 district record. Marion and Randolph are both 2-2 in district play. A win Friday would give the Bulldogs a one-game lead over the Ro-Hawks and the potential head-to-head tiebreak if they finished with identical district records. Marion already owns the head-to-head tiebreak over Lytle. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-4 overall in Ryne Miller’s third season as head coach with a 29-22 loss to Poteet last Thursday. Randolph’s season mark is 5-3 under long-time head coach Pete Wesp. The Ro-Hawks snapped a two-game skid with a 27-14 road
win over Cotulla last Thursday.
not giving up big chunk plays.”
As is annually the case, Randolph’s breadand-butter on offense is a bruising rushing attack. Junior running-back Lezerrick Banks (1,151 yds., 12.6 per carry, 11 TD) and sophomore Colton Howard (799 yds., 7.8 per carry, 9 TD) lead a ground arsenal that cranks out 325.9 rushing yards per contest.
Marion looks to exceed Randolph’s production with a balanced offense tailored to the versatility of junior quarterback Tanner Beakley (1,178 yds., 13 TD passing, 351 yds., 7 TD rushing). Aden Rackley leads the team in rushing with 369 yards, and the top receivers have been Dominic Castellanos (30 rec., 287 yds., 2 TD), Jayden Williams (19 rec., 262 yds., 2 TD), Dillon Blakely (19 rec., 259 yds., 3 TD) and Samuel Montoya (4 TD).
“The number one thing is making sure we know where Number 11 is at,” Miller said when reviewing Marion’s defensive keys against Randolph. “That Lezerrick Banks, he does a great job, he’s there big play guy. Against an offense like that, our defense, we’ve got to make sure we get lined up correctly, and just make sure our guys are trusting their keys and trusting their alignments, and we’ve got to tackle the guy with the football. That’s the one thing we’ve been working on this week is just tackling, and getting back to some fundamental stuff. So making sure we can get number 11 (Banks) on the ground, and
The Bulldogs’ statistical leaders on defense are linebacker Kross Kelso with 99 tackles, linebacker Jayden Williams with 17 tackles-for-loss and nine sacks, and safety Castellanos (3 INT). Marion and Randolph kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Universal City. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report between 6:50 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Over 1,000 Dead In A Day From COVID-19
(Undated) -- The U.S. recorded more than a thousand deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday and nearly 79-thousand new cases of the virus. The grim figures came the same day that Admiral Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary of health who leads the government’s testing efforts, warned that the nation is at a “critical point in the pandemic response.” He noted that the number of cases and hospitalizations are both on the rise across most of the country, with an increase in deaths also being seen. Still, Giroir stressed that “we can control the virus” provided people follow guidelines for mask wearing, social distancing, avoiding crowds and frequent hand washing.
Eli Lilly Reaches Agreement with Federal Government for Distribution of Its Coronavirus Antibody Treatment
(Washington, DC) -- Pharmaceutical manufacturer Eli Lilly has reached an agreement with the U.S. government to supply 300-thousand vials of its coronavirus antibody treatment. The federal government will pay 375-million-dollars within two months following an emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration. The deal also provides the option for the U.S. government to purchase an additional 650-thousand doses through June 30th. The agreement comes days after the Eli Lilly said a trial of the drug failed to show a benefit in hospitalized patients.
France, Germany Going On COVID Lockdown
