The Seguin City Council officially hires new city manager momentum that you all have created," said Parker.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- It’s official. Steve Parker is the new city manager for the city of Seguin. The council unanimously approved the hire on Tuesday evening. Parker, who currently serves as the assistant city manager in San Marcos, thanked the council and says he’s looking forward serving the citizens of Seguin. "Mayor and council I just wanted to let you know how honored I am to be your next city manager. You know, I'm the type of individual that truly cherishes friendships and relationships and so making the move, leaving San Marcos was not an easy decision but when I decided to explore the opportunities here in Seguin, I did a lot of due diligence related to making this move and I did a lot of interviews with employees, developers, consultants and what I really found was this is something that can be very special. The momentum that you created here in Seguin, your dedication to the core services during the interview process really stood out to me with the things like police and fire and street maintenance -- you know those are all things that I really hold dear and as city manager, I think I"m going to be able to take those things and continue the

Parker, 48, replaces longtime Seguin City Manager Doug Faseler, who is set to officially retire at the end of January 2020, although his last day in the office is likely to be sometime around Thanksgiving. Parker says the city already has a good team in place, and he is thankful that he will be able to hit the ground running in Seguin. "I have a lot of respect for the team that Mr. Faseler has created here, the directors as well as Assistant City Manager (Rick) Cortes. That momentum is nothing to be taken lightly. The things that I learned about your organization and the productivity and efficiencies, the customer service levels that you maintain are something that I am going to aspire to keep that going and take even to the next level if possible. But with that, I just wanted to say how honored I am to be your next city manager and I'm looking very forward to January," said Parker. Parker's contract calls for him to receive an annual base salary of $230,000. Parker says that he and his family will be moving to Seguin, and they look forward to being a part of the community. Parker's first official day on the job will be January 6.

Seguin PD Halloween SAFE House continues holiday tradition at Coliseum Other Halloween events to also return to Seguin By Cindy AguirreHerrera

“We’ll get those little devils!”

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

(Seguin) -- Get ready to enter if you DARE. The Seguin Police Department will again be hosting its annual Halloween SAFE House tonight at the Seguin Coliseum. Hope Vasquez, of the Seguin Police Department, says this year's event will again include a night of games, candy, treats and a haunted house. Vasquez says the haunted house alone is expected to be one of the best yet thanks to this year's partnership with the American Legion Riders Post 245. "It's a place where the community can bring their children to a safe house or haunted house. We have them both. For, those that DARE to come into the haunted house, this year, it's going to be special. We have the American Legion Riders and Walmart that are hosting the haunted house. If they've ever been to the American Legion on Kingsbury Street to their haunted house, this is

three times bigger. We also have 17 organizations and business that are hosting and sponsoring a booth and we have punch from Arlan's and Borden and we have popcorn from Home Town Movie Theater," said Vasquez.

Whether rain, shine or cold, Vasquez says the PD is ready to welcome families in for another night of Halloween fun. "I know that we are expecting some cold weather and when it happens like that, we might open early pending everybody being ready to turn off the lights for the haunted house. I know we are thinking of 6:30 to open doors but as the weather comes in, we might open at 6 o'clock. They'll get a free trick-or-treat bag if they don't have a pumpkin," said Vasquez. Also taking a role at this year's haunted house is Seguin Wal-Mart. Employees have also spent the last couple of days prepping the Coliseum for tonight's event. Seguin Walmart will also be a part of the haunted fun at this year's Seguin Police Department’s SAFE House. Employees will be hosting one of the many haunted rooms at the event. from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Coliseum. Again, in case of cold or inclement weather, doors may open as early 6 p.m. The safe house is only one of several other events being planned for tonight. Among the events are a free

A Seguin ISD assistant superintendent to retire after years of service By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The next few weeks will be the final weeks for a member of the Seguin ISD Superintendent Leadership Team. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved the retirement of Dorothy "Dot" Whitman, the assistant superintendent of administrative services. Whitman has served the human resource position for the last 15 years. Whitman says while it was a hard decision to make, it was the right one for her and her family. "I think it's time for me to focus on some family changes that have occurred. My husband is recently retired so it's time for us to find new adventures and grandkids and a little bit of traveling," said Whitman. Anyone who has ever sought a position at the district or who has brought forth a concern has more than likely cross paths with Whitman. Whitman says her position has allowed her to see the personal investments that are being made in the students and will always be grateful for the opportunity to have served the

district. "I'd have to say that this has been the most rewarding position. We do get to try to recruit the very best. I just would like the community to know that Seguin is a unique place and I have had a wonderful opportunity to serve the staff and students and parents of Seguin. We've got wonderful kids in this district and we have got the hardest working teachers that you will ever find that have the best interest for these kids at heart and that's one message that I would like to leave with is that we work hard for this community and we might not get those A ratings sometimes but that doesn't discount the work that they do everyday," said Whitman. Whitman says leaving her post with confidence is also made easy thanks to her current staff and the district's leadership team. "Obviously under the direction of

"I am really sad to see her go. I tried over and over to convince her to extend her time but at the end of the day, your family is more important than your job and I say that all the time. Family comes first and I think it's time that she wants to focus on her family and grandkids and so I understand that but I do appreciate the years of service that she

She really did pour her heart and soul into this work and it is going to be very different without Dot on the Superintendent's Leadership Team but not in ajar. It is sad to think about because I really do think fondly of her and I've worked with several different HR chiefs in my time specifically in administration and I do have to say confidently that Dot Whitman is by far the most solid HR administrator that I have ever had the opportunity to work with or work alongside," said Whitman. East Texas State, she met and fell in love with Joe Chandler, the football star who would be her future husband. Federal Judge Blocks Alabama Abortion Law

Hearing In New York On Youth Tackle Football Ban

(Montgomery, AL) -- A federal judge has blocked Alabama's law banning abortion. In his ruling, District Judge Myron Thompson blocked the Human Life Protection Act from taking effect on November 15th while a challenge to the law goes through the courts. The legislation passed by state lawmakers earlier this year bans nearly all abortion except in cases where a pregnancy is considered a serious health risk to the mother. The law provides no protection for cases involving rape or incest.

(New York, NY) -- New York lawmakers are exploring the idea of banning youth tackle football. An Assembly Health Committee is holding a public hearing to examine the long-term health effects involved when kids play tackle football in leagues. The ban is being considered for children ages 12 and younger.

Shortage Of Flu Vaccine Designed For Seniors (Swiftwater, PA) -- There's a nationwide shortage of a powerful flu vaccine designed for seniors. It's called Fluzone High-Dose and is recommended for people 65 and up because it has more antigens, providing better protection for older people. Sanofi Pasteur, the Pennsylvania-based drug manufacturer that produces Fluzone, denies there's a shortage but seniors in Texas, Maine, Massachusetts and Colorado say they're having trouble locating the high-dose shot. The CDC estimates that nearly 170-million flu doses will be distributed in the U.S. this year by various drug makers.

UI Research Shows Breast Cancer Cases Up in Women In 20's (Iowa City, IA) -- New research at the University of Iowa shows more women in their 20's are getting breast cancer. According to the research, the rate of women in their 20's with stage one to stage three breast cancer has gone up by about two percent each year from 2000 to 2015. The research also shows those women have a lower ten-year survival rate than women in their 30's and 40's. The university says the reason for the lower survival rate could be because of diagnosis and care delays and because physicians may be less suspicious of cancer in young people.
