Today marks final day of early voting

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – If you don’t want to risk the chance of standing in potentially long lines on Election Day, then you might want to consider taking advantage of today’s final day of early voting.

Voters continue to visit the 9 early voting polling locations throughout Guadalupe County. As reported earlier, that’s three more additional sites than usual.

The three new early voting locations include the Marion ISD Tondre Room, the Seguin ISD Admin Building and Selma City Hall. The remaining polling sites include New Berlin Community Center, the Elections Office Annex in Schertz, the Cibolo Fire Station #2, the Central Texas Technology Center, Redemptive Grace Ministries and the Guadalupe County Elections Office in Seguin.

Those wishing to print their sample ballot in advance of casting their ballot are encouraged to visit the elections office website at co.guadalupe.tx.us/

Meanwhile, local voters are reminded of the list of candidates that they will be choosing during the Nov. 5 Presidential and General Election.

Of course, the featured contest is the race for the President of the United States between Former President and Republican Candidate Donald Trump and current Vice President and Democratic Candidate Kamala Harris.

Polls will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Curbside voting will also be available at each earlyvoting polling location. Those unable to get out of their vehicles are encouraged to call the number available on the sign outside.

Seguin native to bring unique theater experience to Seguin

(Seguin) – A Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony nominated script will debut this weekend at the Palace Theatre. “What the Constitution Means to Me” is an inspired production by playwright Heidi Shreck and is based on her real-life experience traveling around the country giving speeches about the U.S. Constitution for scholarship money as a teenager.

Starring and helping to bring the production to life is Seguin Native Ivy Koehler Meehan who is flying in from New York to help piece together the final production that for the last couple of months has only been rehearsed via zoom. Despite the challenges of piecing together the play while so many miles away, Meehan says she didn’t want her hometown to miss the opportunity to be a part of this great theater experience.

“It blends humor, history, and family stories to explore the impact of the Constitution. It’s sort of this theatrical event that starts off innocently enough, where Heidi plays her 15-year-old self-reenacting her original speech complete with extemporaneously discussing a random amendment chosen onstage; that merges with present-day Heidi reconsidering her love of the document based on her own lived experiences as a young adult and then a final theatrical experience in the last 15 minutes where my character debates a local debater about whether this performance’s audience should keep or abolish the Constitution. Our country and Constitution can be messy and raw and be interpreted differently, and this play celebrates that idea by giving this one person’s take on what the Constitution means to her,” said Meehan.

She adds that this play looks at Heidi’s generational relationship with this country, including some topics that are tough to talk about. More importantly, she says it includes some pretty monumental Supreme Court cases where she doesn’t say “Hey the court got this decision incorrect and I’m mad about it.” Instead, she says “I want to understand how they arrived at this decision using the Constitution as their guide.”

Meehan says she is excited to bring this unique theatrical piece to Seguin. She says it includes not only different media but various methods of storytelling.

“There is short audio recordings played from actual SCOTUS cases. There’s this sort of time-hopping journey where Heidi takes the audience on her own personal and family

experiences, sometimes jumping from a humorous story to a heartwrenching one (and) before you realize she’s moved on, but they’re all tethered. It’s such a wellwritten show you almost have to see it twice to connect all the dots or hopefully, audiences continue the conversation afterwards with their community about what the Constitution means to them. And the final method of storytelling is this live, quasi-improvised debate with our local debater, George Nickel where we try to convince the audience to keep or abolish the Constitution. We encourage cheering, booing, stomping of feet, etc. all in fun, of course. Every rehearsal is different, every performance is different based on that night’s audience,” said Meehan.

Dia de los Muertos Celebration

(Seguin) – On November 2, 2024, from 4-8p.m. in Seguin Central Park, a trio of community partners will be throwing a celebration of life and honor the Hispanic heritage and tradition of Dia de los Muertos.

This event celebrates the holiday, Dia de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead. This holiday is about honoring the memories of loved ones that have passed on and celebrating their life.

It’s a very cherished holiday that is celebrated through dancing, music, feasts, gathering in communities, and setting up an altar in remembrance of your loved ones.

To stay true to the traditions of Dia de los Muertos, there will be food trucks, Mariachi/Folklorico dancing, a contest for the best-decorated altar, and more! To participate in the best-decorated altar contest, you can contact Palmer Mortuary to reserve a space for their memorial altars.

This event has been arranged by Palmer Mortuary & Cremations, Goetz Funeral Home, and the Seguin-

Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Jessica Trevino, Funeral Director & Embalmer of Palmer Mortuary & Cremations, states, “The inspiration for this event is to celebrate Hispanic culture and we wanted to bring that to Seguin for all to celebrate. Our hope for the community is that they can come together and celebrate together”.

Denay Gonzales, Funeral Director & Embalmer of Goetz Funeral Home, states, “What I love the most about hosting this event for the community is seeing the reaction of the families seeing their loved ones on the memorial altar and us keeping their loved one’s memory alive.”

The Dia de los Muertos celebration is for the whole community of Seguin to come together and celebrate the lives of lost loved ones. The organizers hope that new memories are created as you honor the old memories of those most dear to you.

Join the community on this day of remembrance and celebration of life.

Voting, continued.

In addition to voting for a presidential candidate, Texas voters will also cast their ballots in various Texas Legislature races. One of those races is the seat for District 44 in the Texas House of Representatives. Democratic Candidate Eric Norman and Republican Alan Schoolcraft are both vying for the position. Both look to replace longtime State Representative John Kuempel, who Schoolcraft defeated for the Republican nomination during the runoff election in May. The seat will be decided by voters across District 44, which includes both Guadalupe and Gonzales counties.

Guadalupe County voters will also have a couple of ballot items. The first is the election of Guadalupe County Tax Assessor-Collector. The race includes incumbent Republican candidate Daryl John and challenger Jesus Trinidad Jr.

Those living in Guadalupe County Pct. 1 will also elect their new representative on the commissioner’s court. Candidates include Republican Jacqueline “Jackie” Ott, Democratic Candidate Nahomie Alanis, and Libertarian Candidate Nolan Schmidt.

In the city of Seguin, Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen faces challenger Francisco “Frank” Luciano Herrera.

The District 2 city council race looks to replace late Councilwoman Sonia Mendez. Appearing on the ballot for District 2 are David Eveld and Mario Hernandez.

District 4 candidates include John Carlsson and Ileen Rangel.

It should be noted that Rangel is the wife of current District 4 Councilman Chris Rangel, who is no longer eligible to run for re-election due to term limits.

A trio of candidates appear on the Seguin City Council ballot for District 6.

Those candidates include Incumbent Monica Carter, Felix Moreno

and Suzanne Wynn.

Although there are no contested school board races, Seguin ISD voters will also head to the polls to consider the Seguin ISD’s Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE). Voters will be asked to vote “For” or “Against” Proposition A on the November 5 ballot.

The election is the district’s attempt at addressing a $4 million deficit. District officials say if voters approve, the tax ratification would lower the maintenance and operation tax rate by 1.38 cents to just over $1.10 per $100,000 of taxable property value. Even though it lowers the rate, they say the district would actually be able to capture more revenue from the state — maximizing that level and addressing many of their financial concerns.

Navarro ISD voters will also consider filling three at-large positions on the school board and one two-year unexpired trustee term.

Those running for one of the three available school board seats include Kimberly Jones, Kristen Green, Becki Stephenson, Kyle Hunter, Incumbent Melissa Sartain, Megan Ossinger, Incumbent Clint Scheib, and Jared Gallini.

Those running for the unexpired seat include Russell Trotti, Jacob Coppedge, Matthew Reed, and Joel Frederick.

Marion voters will also take the next steps toward their future by electing five new alderman positions on its city council. As reported by KWED, the city of Marion has been operating with almost zero representation.

This election looks to restore the city’s operation. Nine candidates will be vying for one of the five available positions. Those candidates include Jena Rodriguez, Stanley Stevens, Phil Karrer, Karen Mills, Jorge Olea, Jeremiah Burns, Kerry Gutierrez, Carl Martin, and Jerry Penshorn.

Voters both today and on election day are reminded to bring plenty of patience. They are also reminded to refrain from any electioneering such as wearing t-shirts, buttons or hats. More importantly, they are reminded to stay off their phones when they are within 100 feet of the polling location.

Again, Meehan says she is especially excited about bringing this story home. She says when it comes to Seguin, there is no lack of talent or support.

“I did a play in New York last fall and a fellow cast mate asked me if I’d do ‘What the Constitution Means to Me ‘with her directing this fall. Our run closed last month. Somewhere in the rehearsal process I was talking about how this show was impacting me to call upon my fellow Texas actors and I kept hearing ‘why don’t you do it in Austin or Seguin?’ It’s a perfect show to have a wonky rehearsal process -- being that I’m in New York and the rest of the crew is in Seguin -- because it’s a small cast and blocking is minimal and somewhat changes every night. Dan and Janis (Daniels) at The Palace have championed this play from the beginning and we are so thankful for them. Actually, a small army of supportive friends and family have really rallied behind this production that we selfproduced. Our director and fellow Seguinite, Tracey Nefford and I have spent the last couple months planning ways to make this weekend’s performances unique theatrical experiences for Seguin audiences. We’re also fortunate to have Pecantown hosting preshow events before both shows, Constitution and Cocktails, where our cast will be hanging out an hour-and-a-half before curtain to celebrate live theater! Complete with Patriotic themed cocktails! Adds Meehan.

High school volleyball: Seguin Lady Matadors claim district title, honor fallen Belicek on Senior Night

(Seguin) — On a night where they honored their seniors, the Seguin Lady Matadors remembered fallen teammate Chloe Belicek and won a district championship in front of an emotional crowd at Seguin High School on Tuesday night.

A near capacity home crowd and the Belicek family watched as the Lady Matadors took down San Antonio Brackenridge in straight sets to earn a share of the District 275A title. Seguin won the match 25-9, 25-7, 25-20.

Members of the Belicek family were recognized before the Senior Night match. Chloe Belicek’s life was tragically cut short just

before her senior year at Seguin High School when she passed away on July 25th following injuries sustained in a car crash the day before in San Marcos. Belicek was 17 years old.

Seguin head coach Ashley Farris says Belicek’s spirit is still with the Lady Matador volleyball team.

“We’re all kinda still expecting Chloe to walk through the door any minute,” Farris said after Tuesday’s match. “We talk about it often, none of us feel (her passing) is real just yet. We talk about her so much and carry her spirit with us everywhere.

“She’s here. She’s here with us. And we really all believe that. And we’re so thankful to

know her, so thankful she’s one of us.”

Tuesday night was the final time for Lady Matador seniors Karina Lerma and Ayla Arcos to play at Goldie Harris in the regular season. Seguin’s season is not over. The district champion Lady Mats will play in the Class 5A UIL playoffs next week.

Seguin will take on San Antonio John Jay. The bi-district match will take place next Tuesday at Veterans Memorial High School in San Antonio. First serve is set for 6 p.m.

(Geronimo) — The Navarro Lady Panthers also took home a victory on Senior Night at Navarro High School on Tuesday.

Navarro swept past Bandera 25-16, 2515, 25-14. The Lady Panthers finished third in District 26-4A.

Navarro will face Lago Vista next Monday in the bi-district round. The match will take place at Kyle Lehman High School with first serve at 6:30 p.m.

(Universal City) — And the Marion Lady Bulldogs fell on the road at Randolph in their final District 27-3A match of the season on Tuesday night.

The district champion Randolph Lady Ro-Hawks won the match 25-13, 25-17, 2521. Marion finished tied for second in district with San Antonio Cole.

The Lady Bulldogs will take on Crystal City in the bi-district round. The match will be held at Devine High School next Tuesday. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.

The disease is caused by a genetic mutation and affects about a hundred-thousand people in the U.S. The new therapies, developed by Bluebird Bio and Vertex Pharmaceuticals and recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, are intense, but offers the chance to permanently alter the genetic mutation that causes the disease.

Bird Flu Cases Increasing Across Several States

California, Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, and Texas have also reported human cases of bird flu.
