(Seguin) – The film festival circuit continues to grow in Seguin with the welcoming of Scrambled Genius, a one-day festival of new independent cinema from around the world.

Film Fest Director Jordan Buckley says the name of the non-profit fest, which derives from a creative rearrangement of the letters that spell out Seguin, will debut this Saturday at the Palace Theatre. He says not only will the fest include a full day of films but will feature a special evening performance by conjunto legend Santiago Jimenez, Jr. “It’s just to give folks in town the opportunity to access new films that they otherwise cannot see anywhere. They are not streaming but they belong to the film festival circuit of independent cinema and of course, this year, we are likewise delighted to be able to host Santiago Jimenez, Jr. the legend of conjunto music to close down our festival on Saturday evening,” said Buckley.

Buckley says there is a variety of films on the schedule – one of which will branch out to a local park.

Dia de Los Muertos celebration to be held tonight in downtown Seguin

(Seguin) -- Don’t put up that Halloween make-up just yet.

The Seguin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Goetz Funeral Home and Palmer Mortuary, is excited to announce the first community wide Dia de Los Muertos event tonight in downtown Seguin.

Denay Gonzales, of Goetz and Palmer Mortuary, says this inaugural event aims to bring the entire community together in celebration and in honor of those loved ones who have died.

“In previous years, we’ve have been having our celebration at the funeral home but this year, we wanted to expand just a little bit so we partnered with the Seguin Hispanic Chamber and we are having it in Central Park this year and hoping for a bigger crowd,” said Gonzales.

Gonzales says the celebration will feature traditional altars, live music, and a variety of food trucks, providing a unique cultural experience for all attendees.

“So, we are going to be having a community altar set up where people may bring photos of their loved ones that have passed on to place on the altar. Right at 4 p.m., we are going to have a DJ out there welcoming everyone as they arrive and then our service will not start until

6 p.m. We are going to have some dancers come out.

We will also have Deacon Carrillo of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church say a prayer and then, we will have mariachis from Barnes Middle School and also Seguin High School come out and play some songs for us,” said Gonzales.

Organizers say this event is not only a celebration of life, but also a testament to the strength and unity of our community.

“It is a Hispanic tradition, but we serve everyone, and we encourage everyone. It is a day of remembrance, and we are bringing that to the community to assist with the grieving process and things like that and honor and remember all the loved ones from the community who have passed on,” said Gonzales.

The event is free and will be held today, Nov. 2, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Participants interested in setting up their own altars are encouraged to contact the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for registration information. To add to the festive spirit, there will be a competition for the most decorative altar, with prizes awarded to the top three entrants. Seguin PD Blue Santa applications now being accepted Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The holiday season continues today with preparations for this year's Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program.

Wednesday marked the first day to submit your application for the program which ensures gifts under the Christmas tree for local children ages 0-12 years old.

Sarah Chilutti, the community engagement officer for the Seguin PD, says the program is designed so that those families who need the extra help will be able to find it this holiday season. She says applications can be picked up at various locations around town and returned with the proper documentation.

“To qualify, you can have a various range of ways that you can qualify such as you can be on WIC, housing authority, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, disability. There is a lot of different ways you can qualify so we have all of that information on our website and all they have to do to apply. They need a current ID or driver’s license (and) proof of income to meet the eligibility requirements. That’s pretty much it and of course, be a resident of Guadalupe

County,” said Chilutti.

Chilutti reminds families that the program will work with them no matter their living situation.

“We’ve had it where there is a couple of different families in one household. They would just have to put down their children or any children that you are their legal guardian and our admin here kind of goes through the paperwork to make sure that everyone is being fair and honest and that way we aren’t getting a few of the same kiddos signed up so everyone can have an equal opportunity to get presents and if there is any issue with the paperwork, then our ladies here will contact them and let them know,” said Chilutti.

Application locations include the Seguin PD, Guadalupe County Sheriff 's Office, Seguin ISD Central Office along with all Seguin ISD locations, the Seguin Housing Authority, Middletowne Apartments, Summers Bend Apartments, Community Council of Central Texas and at SVDP Good Shepherd Schertz-Marion.

“One big component of our film festival is called ‘Wheels and Reels’ where we combine BMX with a film that deals with BMX. So, the very first film of the festival on Saturday is called ‘What the Flat?’ and it’s about the Chilean BMXer who is in the Olympics and so that is a documentary that begins at 11 a.m. at the Palace Theatre but then from 1 to 4 p.m. at Park West there at the skatepark, there is going to be a BMX show with several professional riders doing flatland basically where you dance on top of your bicycle or kind of ride it in unconventional ways and so the part at the skatepark is free to the community. It’s for all ages and a lot of fun to see people who are total professionals in their field of expertise doing their thing,” said Buckley.

Buckley adds that although folks are invited out to watch the BMX riders at Park West, the film festival will continue with its schedule indoors.

Buckley says he hopes that this will contribute to even more screenings of these talented films in Seguin.

Kicker Joaquin Rodriguez Named to D3football.com Team of the Week Bryce Hayes - TLU Sports Information & Sports Marketing

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior kicker Joaquin Rodriguez (San Antonio/Smithson Valley) has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for Week 9, as announced by the publication Tuesday morning.

Rodriguez was a highlight for the Bulldogs in their 31-27 loss at Howard Payne on Saturday, making all four of his field goal attempts and adding a PAT. The San Antonio native connected on kicks from 35, 29, 46, and 45 yard for a career-best outing. The four field goals are the second most in a singlegame in program history, only trailing newly inducted TLU Athletics Hall of Famer Allen Cain, who made five in a game twice. His 13 points in a single game were also a career best.

For the season, Rodriguez has made seven of his 12 field goal attempts and has racked up 38 total points. After last week’s performance, Rodriguez sits in seventh place all-time in TLU’s NCAA Division-III history for field goals made with 13 in his career.

Rodriguez is the first Bulldog placekicker to earn the Team of the Week

honor since Juan Ocampo during the Spring 2021 season.

This is the 25th season that D3football.com has selected the Team of the Week, which honors the top player nationally at each position from the previous week.

Johnnie Mae Morgan, of Seguin, died October 24, 2023 at the age of 87 years old. Survivors include sons: Cornel Cunningham and Darryl L. Cunningham Sr;Daughters: Cheryl Cunningham, Carmella (Rita) Cunningham, Jennifer Morgan, Martha Grant and Dian Mueller; and Brother J.T. Dorothy Lee “Dottie” Vogel Kallies, age 88 of Belmont, passed away on October 28, 2023. Dorothy was born on November 9, 1934, in New Braunfels, Texas to Virginia Margarite (Wagner) and Herbert Vogel.

Upon her mother’s death at age 6, she was raised by her great-aunt Fannie Ellis and great-uncle Howell Ellis in eastern Guadalupe County. She attended Dowdy School until it closed, and then graduated from Seguin High School in 1953. In June 1953, she married Leslie “Pete” Kallies. They had three children: Mona, Basil, and Jeffery Kallies.

Dottie was a homemaker, teacher’s aide, sales clerk at Williams Drug Store, and insurance agent for Hermann Sons Life, and enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, canning, baking, and making jellies as well as raising chickens, turkeys, and guinea hens. She was a 40-year breast cancer survivor.

Dottie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Leslie “Pete” Kallies, parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Frances Kallies, step-mother-in-law, Clara Kallies, great-aunt and great-uncle, grandparents, brother Herbert Vogel Jr. and wife Alma, and nephew Billy Wayne Vogel.

Survivors include her daughter, Mona Kallies Ulbricht, and husband

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return.

His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on.

James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

Castenalloz, Timothy “Dancing Bear” Sczech, and Larry “Gear Jammer” Jahns. Ultimately these men and their families meshed together creating an unbelievably strong, lifelong example of brotherly love and what it truly means to be a family.

James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled.

James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates.

The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

A record 16-point-three million people signed up through the health insurance marketplace last year. CVS And Walgreens Pharmacy Staff Begin Walkout (New York, NY) -- Pharmacy employees at CVS and Walgreens stores are beginning a walkout. Some staff are starting the three-day strike to demand better working conditions and to hire more people. Organizers are calling it “Pharmageddon” and it’s the third strike by pharmacists in just over a month. In September, some CVS staff walked out in Kansas City, Missouri, and Walgreens workers went on strike earlier this month.

Arizona Doctors Allowed To Challenge Abortion Law (Phoenix, AZ) -- Arizona doctors may get the chance to challenge a state law concerning abortions. That ruling from a federal appeals court yesterday, saying doctors should be able to do so because of a “credible threat” of them being prosecuted if they act in violation of the law that was passed two years ago. The law in question bans abortions that are asked for because of fetal genetic abnormalities. The ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals sends the case back to a lower court to look at potentially banning the law at the doctors’ request. Multiple doctors filed a lawsuit after the law was passed back in 2021.

FDA Warns Against Use Of Certain OTC Eye Drops (Washington, DC) -- The FDA is warning consumers not to use over-the-counter eye drop products from several major brands. The agency said there could be risk of eye infections leading to vision loss or blindness. The brands include CVS Health. Rite Aid, Target Up&Up, Velocity Pharma, Leader and Rugby. The FDA said investigators found unsanitary conditions in the manufacturing facility and positive bacterial test results from environmental sampling for critical drug production areas in the facility.
