Seguin welcomes new mayor Dodgen to lead the city for the next four years By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Seguin’s future now lies in the hands of a new city mayor. Winning the seat on Tuesday was former Seguin City Councilmember Donna Dodgen. Dodgen defeated challenger Francisco “Frank” Herrera for the top city seat. Dodgen received 5,135 of the votes cast while Herrera received 3,459 votes. Dodgen says she is honored for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started. “I am so excited and I just really want to thank everybody and I truly appreciate it. I had super, super support. It’s just been amazing and I’ve learned so much. You continue to learn things with the city and how to do things and you learn what Seguin has and has to offer and it’s been an amazing trip and journey and it’s not over yet. In fact, it’s just beginning,” said Dodgen. Dodgen says with a majority of the city council being new, her first priority will

be to help ease those individuals into their own respective positions. “I really promise that we’ll continue our positive past and I want to continue to work to make this a great place to live, work and play. I pledge to listen and to support and be a part of the solution and facilitate needed changes. We can do it. We can do anything and we can do it together. But, some of the first things that I know we need to do is we need to do an orientation. There’s four new ones. I’ve been there and Chris (Rangel) has been there but there’s three who have not been on council and who have not had that experience so I think we need to get them acquainted to what is happening. I think we need to get them acquainted to the budget that just occurred and the new things that are happening and how it all kind of works, -- communication and I really want to form a really good team. I want to pull us together so we can work together and move us forward,” said Dodgen.

Newly elected Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen, center, celebrates her win with brother, Les Dodgen, left and friend Brenda Pompa. Dodgen returns to city government after having served as a council member from 2012-2018.

and made their voices heard.

Sonia Mendez By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Voters will welcome a pair of new faces to the Seguin City Council. The first new council member approved by voters is Sonia Mendez. Mendez on Tuesday defeated challenger Pete Silvius for the District Two position. Both candidates were looking to replace Councilwoman Jet Crabb who was ineligible for re-election. In the race, Mendez received 504 of the votes cast while Silvius received 251 votes. Mendez says she is incredibly grateful to those in her district that showed up

“I want to thank my district. Thank you for going out. Your voice, it counts. It matters to me. I want to thank the Father up above. Thank you Lord. My mother who has been the driving force since day one. My children, they were my coordinator, my photographer, they were campaign treasurer. They were my transportation. I would also like to thank my grandchildren who walked the streets with me, passing out the fliers, the yard signs and again, District Two for voting. My family and friends thank you for the support -- the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for nominating me. This is something new to me but I will learn. I will need your help from District Two and we are going to make Seguin better and safer,” said Mendez. Silvius says he thanks Mendez for a hard fought race and will continue serving the city in anyway that he can. “I want to congratulate Sonia on really a huge win. Congratulations on that and she will do a great job for our city. I want to thank all of the voters that came out to support me and all the kind words and talks that people have shared with me during this election season so I’m thankful for all of it and of course will continue to support Seguin. It’s my home and I look forward to being a part of it for years to come,” said Silvius.

Family and friends of Sonia Mendez gather to help celebrate her win during Tuesday’s Seguin City Council District Two race.

Rosales says she congratulates Carter on her win and is appreciative for the experience of the campaign.

Monica Carter

Residents in District Six will also have new representation on the Seguin City Council. Monica Carter, one of three candidates in that race, was the top vote getter with 657 of the votes cast. Following behind were Wanda Rosales with 260 votes and Ricardo Sanchez Jr. with 143 votes. Carter says she was blown away with the amount of support shown at the polls and is eager to get to work. “I am honored. I am excited. I am grateful above all that the residents of District 6 came out with such a phenomenal amount of support. I am just beyond words at this moment, still in a state of shock, of course but I just so grateful to so many people. I’ve had such an amazing amount of support from my family, from friends, from strangers, from various people in the community. I plan to thank them all personally and it’s way too many people to name. I’m just grateful for everyone and I’m excited to learn everything that I need to so that I can help represent Seguin to the best of my

“I am very thankful for all my supporters. I really appreciate everything they did for me. I still feel like a winner because I have made new friends and moving forward, I want to wish Mrs. Monica Carter the best with her new position and I will be there for her if she needs anything, I will support her. I am glad I got to meet her and all the other candidates” said Rosales. Sanchez says he too is grateful to have been a part of the process and thanks those who came out to support him. “Thank you for voting. It’s awesome seeing everybody show up and vote and participating in the process and I’m just glad to be a part of it,” said Sanchez. Carter will replace Councilwoman Fonda Mathis, who like Crabb, was unable to campaign for another term. Now, although their races were uncontested, Tuesday’s election solidified a seat on the council for City Council District One and Council District Four. In District One, Joe Rea will replace Councilman Ernest Leal while Chris Rangel will return to his seat for another term in District Four. All new council members are expected to officially take their seat later on this month.

board for the next two top vote getters. They include incumbents Renee Rehfeld and Clint Scheib. Rehfeld received 2,495 of the votes cast while Scheib followed with 1,762 votes. Rounding out the group of six candidates were Weldon Dietze with 1,699 votes; Tracy Large with 1,365 and Tank Malinovsky with 814 votes. In response to the results, Rehfeld says they were overwhelming and is encouraged by the level of support shown. “I truly am so excited that the community trusted me enough to put me in for another four years. I feel very humbled by the votes that I received and it’s just a lot to take in right now,” said Rehfeld. Scheib says he too is grateful to be returning to his seat and is already looking ahead at planning out Navarro’s future.

“I’m really appreciative and really thankful for the community for allowing me another four years on the By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera board specifically because of what we have ahead of us. In the next couple of years, we have a lot of challenges (Geronimo) -- Although Navarro ISD voters have confirmed their with this growth. It’s going to be difficult but we will get choices for the three available seats on the school board, there is still through it,” said Scheib. some uncertainty with at least the top vote getter in Tuesday’s race. Candidate Katherine Ewald, who publicly pulled out of the race prior to early voting but whose name still appeared on the ballot for the Navarro ISD Board of Trustees, led the pack of six candidates after garnering the most support with 2,646 of the votes cast. Now although Ewald said she was not going to seek a position, Tuesday night’s results, has claimed her a seat on the school board. Until she denies the position, election officials say the seat is hers. As for Ewald’s intentions, she stated to the Seguin Daily News that she was “not ready to comment yet” but that she would let us know “something soon.” It is not yet known how the school board will proceed should she deny the position. Potential options include appointing a trustee, holding a special election or leaving the position vacant until the next school board election. Meanwhile, voters have also confirmed the return to the school

The Gobblers dropped a 29-27 nail-biter to Smithville last Friday, and could finish anywhere from second to fourth in District 13-4A-DII depending on other results on the final night of the regular season. Cuero wraps up its district schedule at home against 1-8 Gonzales. The Buffaloes dominated La Grange 31-7 last Friday to stay unbeaten in district play. Giddings can clinch the outright 13-4A-DII championship and top playoff seed with a road win over Navasota this Friday, but a Navasota win would create a shared district title between the two and drop the Buffaloes into the second seed. The Titans routed Austin-Achieve 54-7 for a district win two weeks ago. New Tech was idle last week and will visit 0-4 Eastside Memorial this week.

Comfort meets 0-7 Luling for the fourth and final playoff seed in District 13-3A-DI this Friday. The Owls blew out Bandera 56-14 last week and can clinch the District 15-4A-DII title and top playoff seed this Friday with a win over 4-5 Carrizo Springs. The Indians defeated Lytle 49-21 last Tuesday and have clinched the District 14-3A-Division I championship and the top playoff seed. Jourdanton concludes the regular season this Saturday against 0-5 Cotulla. The Pirates suffered a 49-21 loss to Jourdanton in their final regular season game last Tuesday. Lytle currently sits in fourth place in the district standings, but a Marion win over Cole on Saturday would give the Bulldogs the fourth and final playoff seed and relegate the Pirates to fifth place. Court: CA Governor Overstepped His Authority (Sutter County, CA) -- A California Superior Court judge has tentatively ruled Governor Gavin Newsom overstepped his authority when he unilaterally made changes to state law in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The suit brought by Republican Assemblymen James Gallagher and Kevin Kiley places a permanent injunction on the Governor making such decisions moving forward. The lawmakers say they do believe actions are necessary to keep people safe during health emergencies, but not at the expense of a free society by putting all the power in the hands of one man. The Court’s decision does not impact any of the protocols put in place for the 2020 General Election. Cuomo Questions Feds Vaccine Data Sharing Agreement (Albany, NY) -- Governor Cuomo is questioning the federal government’s vaccine data sharing agreement. Cuomo said the government wants vaccine recipients to share personal information, such as a driver’s license number or a social security number. Cuomo said he is writing to federal health officials, questioning why they need such personal information that is not health related. Cuomo also said the current vaccination distribution plan doesn’t prioritize minority communities, which have higher COVID infection rates. Starting this Friday at 12:01 a.m., there will be a stay-at-home advisory in effect from ten p.m. to five a.m. except for work or essential reasons. Everyone over the age of five must wear a mask in public, both indoors and outdoors, regardless of the ability to social distance. Additionally, entertainment venues and liquor stores must close, and restaurants must stop offering table service nightly at 9:30 p.m. NFL To Propose 16-Team Playoff As Contingency Plan (Undated) -- The NFL is making plans that could expand the postseason field to 16 teams. ESPN reports the NFL competition committee is expected to propose a 16-team playoff to owners as a coronavirus pandemic contingency plan. The expanded playoff scenario would be in the event if games are lost due to the virus. Under the plan, four division champions and four wild-card teams from each conference would compete in the postseason. It would be a one versus eight, two versus seven, three versus six, and four versus five format.

Lawtum

Judy Annette Lawtum, 63, passed away peacefully during the early hours of October 17, 2020. Judy was born on April 12, 1957 in Ruislip, England, the daughter of Marvin Kelly and Phyllis Jean (Utterback) Cook.

She was an Air Force “brat,” and her father’s Air Force career took the family all over the world. Ultimately, they landed in San Antonio, Texas, where they remained when Marvin retired. She was a good cook, enjoyed crocheting and sewing, and enjoyed reading fantasy and science-fiction novels. She had an undeniable love for animals and would never turn away a stray. At times, she had a veritable zoo on her 10 acre plot in Seguin. Judy was very kind-hearted, always putting the needs and wants of others before her own. She was loved by all who knew her, and she will be sorely missed. A celebration of life service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Seguin, TX, on Thursday, November 5th at 1:30 PM. The family would like to thank all of her caregivers at AdventHealth Care Center, her doctors, and Heart to Heart Hospice for the compassion they have shown to Judy and her family for the duration of Judy’s illness.
