Election Day 2024 now underway! Polling locations OPEN

(Seguin) – The Nov. 5 Presidential and General Election Day has finally arrived. Polling locations throughout Guadalupe County are now open until 7 p.m. Registered voters in Guadalupe County are reminded that Vote Centers are now in full operation meaning that local voters can cast their ballot at any polling site throughout the county.

In addition to a photo ID, Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes encourages voters to also bring along plenty of patience as many of the polling locations might be reporting long lines.

She says evidence that folks are interested in this election was clear following the results of early voting. She says a total of 66,903 people took advantage of the two week early voting period.

“I’d like to remind the voters

that the polls close at 7 p.m. Anyone in line at the time that the polls close is entitled to vote but if you come late just because the line is still there, it doesn’t mean that you can get in line to vote. So, we will have a clerk standing at the end of the line because the law says anyone in line at 7 p.m. is entitled to vote. So, if you wait till the very last minute and even if you get there before 7 p.m., there is a good chance that you are going to have to wait because we will keep going until the line is gone so it could be 8:30 p.m. or 9 o’clock usually before that line goes down,” said Hayes.

There are a total of 38 Vote Centers or polling sites in Guadalupe County. Again, any registered voter can vote at any election day location, regardless of the precinct in which they reside.

Squirrel Trail gets BOOKISH addition

Say hello to Klara Ann Bookerton, the newest squirrel to hit the city-wide trail at Pecantown Books & Brews. See story on page 2.

Local bookstore unveils latest Seguin squirrel

(Seguin) -- Who better to turn the page to her own story than Klara Ann Bookerton?

Bookerton is Seguin’s newest Squirrel unveiled on the lawn of Pecantown Books & Brews.

Introducing Bookerton as the newest character in Seguin’s Squirrel Trail Program is Shirley Woehler Hester. Hester, a longtime resident and former Guadalupe County Commissioner, says she gifted the fiberglass squirrel to her daughter-in-law Tess Coody Anders, the owner of the downtown bookstore.

“When I saw it going around Seguin – all the squirrels – I wanted to do something special for Pecantown and for Tess. So, I ordered it like a year and a half ago and finally got it. I think it’s really neat, very pretty. I like that they had the base from the wallpaper from the inside,” said Hester.

Coody Anders says she is grateful for Bookerton and says the squirrel was the missing element to the local business.

“My mother-in-law who is a Seguin native and who is really proud of her community and she’s also

really proud of Pecantown and she offered up the potential of securing a squirrel for us because she saw it as such a perfect marriage between Seguin’s history and where Seguin is going and the role that Pecantown is playing in creating a vibrancy in downtown Seguin and she really wanted to leave that mark for us and for Seguin and for me which was incredibly meaningful. It is an incredibly meaningful squirrel for me personally as well as a downtown business owner,” said Coody-Anders.

Serving as the artist for the project was Jeremy Wallace of the Creation Company. This marks the second squirrel painted by Wallace. The first was the design of “Chance” located outside of the Meservey Group at 520 N. River St.

As for his creativity put into the project, Coody Anders says Bookerton more than exceeded her expectations.

“It’s like a character out of a Beatrix Potter storybook has leapt from the pages and is seated in the front yard.

Once they arrive, Hayes says voters should expect the enforcement of rules to protect the integrity of the process.

“Just remember, no cell phones allowed within 100 feet of the polling place. No campaign t-shirts or candidate gear of any sort and just be patient and let us get you through. We want you to have a good voting experience just as much as you want to have a good voting experience. So, just hang in there. We will get through this and it’s going to be amazing,” said Hayes.

Voters are encouraged to print out their respective sample ballots and bring them with them to the voting booth. Again, the ballot must be a paper form and

Her name is Klara Ann Bookerton. Her first name was borrowed from Jeremy’s daughter who is the coartist. She is 12. Her middle name is my mother-in-law’s middle name and Bookerton was just our effort to reflect the fact that she is reading a book, and she is representing a bookstore,” said Coody-Anders.

Hester says supporting such programs and art projects is vital to ensuring the story telling of the community.

“I think there is

plenty of room for more in Seguin and they are all so beautiful. I just hope that more will participate, and I think they will. I really think they will,” said Hester.

Bookerton marks the 15th squirrel for the city-wide trail which promotes art in public spaces. The squirrels are sponsored by community members and organizations who then commission a local artist to paint them.

The program is supported by both the city of Seguin and the Seguin Commission on the Arts.

Wolfe, Bulldogs Make Program History as TLU Shuts Out Concordia (TX), 1-0

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran secured the number two seed in the SCAC Tournament for the third straight season under head coach Kerwin Johnson after defeating Concordia (TX), 1-0 on Sunday at Gustafson Field. As the game kicked off, senior Kelly Wolfe (San Antonio/ Churchill) made history by becoming Texas Lutheran’s all-time leader in games played and games started with her 81st career game and start on Sunday.

Junior Callie Brame (San Antonio/Churchill) scored the game’s only goal in the 24th minute coming off an Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/ Warren) free kick. Simien would take the free kick before Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy) would take one touch to set up Brame for the game’s only goal. The goal is Brame’s fifth of the season while the assists are Simien’s eighth and Martinez’s ninth respectively. The ninth assist for Martinez ties her with former teammate Ana Parra and TLU Hall of Famer, Kelli Layden, for the second most in a single-season in program history - only trailing Katie Buehler’s 11 in 2007.

The Bulldogs shut down the Tornados in the first half, limiting them to just one shot in the first half. The Tornados would finish with seven shots total in the game with only one coming on goal. Goalkeeper Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) would make the save in her lone

challenge on Sunday to pick up her 12th win, bringing her one win shy of matching Katie Kistner for the most goalkeeper wins in a single-season (13, 2004 & 2006). The shutout improves Marquez’s season total to 5.5.

Texas Lutheran would outshoot the Tornados 16-7 in the match and hold a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

TLU improves its record to 12-5-1, 8-2 in SCAC play. Concordia (TX) drops to 9-7-2, 7-2-1 in the SCAC. With the win, Texas Lutheran set a new program record for conference winning percentage, finishing the regular season with an .800 conference winning percentage, surpassing the previous program mark of .786 set the previous two seasons.

The results of Sunday’s match between Southwestern and McMurry sets up a rematch with Concordia (TX) in the SCAC Tournament semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8, at SaberCats Stadium in Houston at 2:30 PM. If you want to give your pup a treat, Dr. Rutter say they love carrots or even a piece of pumpkin.
