Big Boy locomotive steams its way through Seguin By Darren Dunn (Luling) -- Union Pacific is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and it is bringing a special steam engine through the area today as part of the celebration. Union Pacific's historic Big Boy steam locomotive No. 4014 is going to be passing through the Seguin area around 9 a.m., and it will be making a scheduled stop in Luling at approximately 10 a.m. The train is scheduled to arrive at East Davis and Pecan Avenue in Luling at 10 a.m., and then depart at 10:30 a.m. Union Pacific officials say due to the dynamic nature of these operations, running times and and scheduled stops are subject to change. If you're coming out to see the train in person, Union Pactific strongly encourages the public to keep safety in mind:
- Remember, trains can't stop quickly to avoid people or vehicles on the tracks. - A train's distance and speed can be deceiving - The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet - Take extra precaution and stand back at least 25 feet. - Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and right of way are private property. - Never assume tracks are abandoned or inactive - Always expect a train.
Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 will roll through Seguin today.

Commissioners decline to reinstate burn ban
angelpest.com 830.379.3277
By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The burn ban is still off in Guadalupe County. The Commissioners
Court on Tuesday decided not to reinstate the burn ban. Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator/Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says the current conditions allowed the court to leave the burn ban off for now. "The commissioners court opted to table the burn ban, due to the KBDI only being at 531. They felt that to put the burn ban on was not a wise decision at this time. We are going to allow the citizens in this county to continue burning. It has not reached that point where it's a major safety concern. So the commissioners court will put the burn ban on its agenda next week...to see if the drought index has reached the requirements for the county to look at putting the burn ban (back) into effect," said Pinder.
Residents, who live in the unincorporated or more rural parts of the county, can burn as long as the weather conditions cooperate. Pinder says the fact that people have more time to burn, and the fact that the county has reopened it waste collection stations in Marion and Kingsbury -- gives people more safe options to get rid of their trash. He says if people choose to burn the trash at their home, they need to make sure the follow the rules that apply to any controlled burn. "When you do decide to burn, there are some precautions that you need to take. You obviously need to make sure that the wind is not exceeding 26 miles per hour. You need to make sure that if you are burning, that you've got some sort of water near you. You always need to
be with the fire when it's burning. Often times what will happen is, people will burn to the ashes, and leave it and walk away, but then the wind picks up and it gets it in the grass, and then you have an uncontrolled burn that's spreading out there due to the wind. So the things we encourage people to do are always stay with it, always have a water source and make sure that you carry your cellphone, because we can always turn firetrucks around if the fire is not that bad," said Pinder. Pinder says the burn ban will be back on the commissioners court agenda next week. If the weather further dries out and the KBDI rises, commissioners would again have an opportunity to reinstate the burn ban across the county.

Steam locomotive continues historic run through area
BIG BOY, continued from page 1
Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 is the world's largest steam locomotive, and this is expected to be its final tour. The locomotive was newly restored for this journey. "Weighing in at 1.2 million pounds, the Big Boy makes a big impression in communities it visits, reminding us of bygone days and the important role the railroad continues to play in our global economy," said Scott Moore, senior vice president – Corporate Relations and chief administrative officer. "Union Pacific wants to thank the countless rail fans and communities who have helped us celebrate this tremendous anniversary." Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific, the first of which was delivered in 1941 to handle the steep terrain between Cheyenne and Ogden. Of the eight still in existence, No. 4014 is the world's only operating Big Boy. In May, it completed its inaugural tour to Ogden for Union Pacific's 150th anniversary ceremony. The Big Boy andhistoric steam locomotive Living Legend No. 844 met nose-to-
nose, recreating the iconic image taken May 10, 1869, when the last spike was tapped into place at Promontory Summit, creating America's first transcontinental railroad. The train made a major stop in San Antonio on Tuesday, and has another big stop planned in Houston on Thursday. It will be stopped at 902 Washington Ave. in Houston from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, and the company's Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car will also be available that day. The Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car is said to be a new, multi-media walk-through exhibition that provides a glimpse at the past while telling the story of modern-day railroading. Through sound, images and interactive technology, rail fans will see how Union Pacific is building America in their communities and throughout the world. After entering the converted baggage car, patrons will first learn about the investment, hard work and knowhow that went into building the transcontinental railroad. Moving forward along one wall they’ll learn about the evolution of the locomotive, beginning with the world famous UP No. 119 and leading to the modern-day diesel powerhouses. On the opposite wall, rail

Researchers Create Blood Test To Detect Breast Cancer Early
Vegetable Packing Company Recalls 140 Products Over Listeria Scare
(Undated) -- A possible breakthrough in detecting breast cancer. The earlier it's caught the better and that what researchers claim a new blood test can do. In fact, they say it can detect breast cancer five years before any clinical signs emerge. They've created a test to identify the body's immune response to substances made by tumors. And they say it worked in a study of 90 patients. Researchers now plan to try it on 800 patients and hope the test will be ready in four years.
(Undated) -- More than a hundred vegetable products sold across the United States and Canada have been recalled over possible listeria contamination. According to the FDA, Mann Packaging Company, which makes packaged veggies for Trader Joe's, Del Monte, Mann's, and others, had to recall about 140 items out of an abundance of caution. No illnesses have been reported. Listeria infection can lead to high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, the FDA said.
Men Encouraged To Take Charge Of Prostate Health (Chicago, IL) -- During this National Men's Health Awareness Month, men are being urged to take charge of their prostate health. After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. Dr. Joshua Halpern, a urologist at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, says 85-percent of prostate cancers are detected by abnormalities in a PSA blood test or rectal exam and says family history and race are well-established risks for prostate cancer. Dr. Halpern says AfricanAmerican men and those with a father, brother or grandfather who had prostate cancer should talk to their doctors about screening beginning in their 40s and says most other men can wait until their 50s or 60s.
University Of Utah Engineers Testing Bionic Leg For Amputees (Salt Lake City, UT) -- Engineers at the University of Utah hope the bionic leg they're testing could become widely available to amputees sometime in the next decade. The university's Bionic Engineering lab is working on the leg, which is lighter than a normal human leg and has an onboard computer processor and motorized joints. Engineers hope their design will allow amputees who need such a device to wear it comfortably for longer periods. They say they still have a lot of work to do before it can be used in the real world.
