Election Day has arrived Voters head out to cast ballots in Nov. 7 Constitutional Amendment Election Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Voters are encouraged to be on the lookout for the “Vote Here” signs across Guadalupe County.

Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says several polling locations will be open today for the Nov. 7 Constitutional Amendment Election.

“Bring your ID. Make sure you know where your polling places are.

We have 32 election day polling places for the voters to choose from.

I definitely recommend checking our website because we have had some changes since last November. Some of our regular polling places are under construction so we have had to relocate -- things of that nature -- so definitely check our website or stop by our office and pickup a list of locations. Just a reminder, you can not vote at the elections office in Seguin on election day. There is no voting here but we do have lists of voting locations and there are several locations in the general vicinity. So we are pretty centrally located for that. Elections, pg. 3

Local groups campaigning for passage of pair of state propositions Fourteen state propositions to appear on statewide ballot Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- Voters today will be taking a hard look at the future of the state of Texas by deciding on 14 Propositions during today’s Constitutional Amendment Election.

At least two of those Propositions have carried a loud voice here locally. The first involves Proposition 1. If approved, the legislation would limit regulations on farming and ranching plus horticulture, timber and wildlife management.

Hoping voters will say “yes” is Ray Joy Pfannstiel, the newly elected president of the local Farm Bureau board of directors. Pfannstiel says passage of this proposition is critical especially for those farmers and ranchers working in and around municipalities.

“One of the reasons of why this came up in the past is there was several farmers that were farming land within city limits where there were ordinances where they couldn’t do certain things i.e. grass or hay could not be taller than 12 inches and we need hay to be about 3 to 4 ft. before we cut it for hay or harvesting crops -- when driving a combine for field work, they are saying no dust. Well, there will always be some dust when you’re harvesting and so if we are told that we can’t harvest our crop, well that’s our livelihood and that then transfers down the road to food and fiber for our population,” said Pfannstiel.

Pfannstiel says this amendment rectifies future requirements for the agriculture industry and simply allows those normal farming activities to continue.

He says this is especially important as the shape of the rural communities in the state continue to change with all of the development.

“Here in Guadalupe County, we are really facing the brunt of it. Right now within all the cities, Seguin, Schertz, Cibolo are all growing and taking on more farm land,” said Pfannsteil.

Local retired teachers and members of the Texas Retired Teachers Association have also been campaigning for Proposition 9. Betty Humphris, the legislative chair of Guadalupe County’s retired school personnel, says supporting this ballot item is critical for retired teachers today and those in the future.

“People do not understand why this has to be a Constitutional Amendment in Texas. What this does, it gives the legislatures the ability to give retired teachers, a COLA (cost-of-living adjustment) without any further votes from the public. So, that’s the first thing. Of course, the main thing, it’s been 2004 since we’ve had an increase and with the cost of living like everyone knows going the way it is -- we have people struggling.

Voters can also call our office to find out where the locations are,” said Hayes.

Making things easier to cast your ballots will be the county’s Vote Centers which will again be in operation. Hayes says Vote Centers, which are still unique to many counties, allows voters to vote at any polling location in Guadalupe County.

“In May, we had a different type of election where that wasn’t possible but Vote Centers are back for this November election so any Guadalupe County registered voter can go to any Guadalupe County voting location and vote. There is no problem there. In fact, we encourage voters to familiarize themselves with the various locations just in case there is a line. I don’t expect that to be the case but that is one of the great things about Vote Centers is if you go to your favorite voting location and there is a line, there is always another voting location that is not too far distant and we usually have signs posted on the doors listing the four nearest voting locations. So that will help also,” said Hayes.

Constitutional Amendments appearing on the ballot, Hayes reminds voters that nine local jurisdictions will also be hosting elections. She says each eligible Guadalupe County voter will receive a ballot containing the races pertinent to the address at which they are registered to vote.

Among the entities appearing on the ballot is the Meadow Lake Water Control Improvement District.

The group is seeking the passage of Propositions A, B and C for the restoration of the local lake.

Proposition A would “authorize the WCID to issue bonds for the restoration of Meadow Lake, its dam and hydroelectric capacity with a tax levy for debt service.”

Proposition B would “authorize the WCID to refinance bonds issued under Proposition A if costs can be reduced due to lower interest rates.”

We actually have a foundation that supports retired personnel that can’t make their mortgage or (cover their) health (bills) or other costs so it’s actually something that has been needed for a long time,” said Humphris.

Humphris says the approved pension increase, if approved, would not only be afforded to teachers but to all retired school district personnel. She says that includes bus drivers, maintenance personnel, custodians, food service and school administrators.

More importantly, saying “yes” would not impact taxpayers.

“There will be no tax increase. This money has already been allocated by both the Senate and the House.

TRS has the money. It will not affect taxes at all and that is a big problem that people don’t seem to understand,” said Humphris.

She adds that most retired teachers are not eligible to receive Social Security. Therefore, a TRS (Texas Retirement System) pension, in most case, is their primary source of income.

Finally, Proposition C would set “an upper limit on any taxes related to the operations and maintenance of the WCID and to authorize the WCID to levy taxes up to that maximum tax rate.”

Area ballots will also include the race for mayor in the city of Marion and three seats on the Schertz City Council.

Those hoping to lead the city of Marion are Candidates Abigaile Maberry and Daniel Loyola. The winning candidate will replace former Mayor Victor Contreras who in September resigned due to health and personal reasons.

Three available seats are up for grabs in the city of Schertz. Two candidates will be vying for Place 3 and 5 while four candidates will be vying for Place 4.

Other entities going out to voters and appearing on Guadalupe County ballots include Green Valley Special Utility District; Schertz-Universal City ISD; New Braunfels ISD, and Guadalupe County Municipal Utility Districts 4, 6 and 10.

Marion and Navarro playoff football games to air on KWED Chris Austin

(Manor) -- The Navarro Panthers finished the 2023 regular season with an impressive 59-6 win at Manor New Tech this past Friday.

Senior quarterback Colton Schuelke threw two touchdown passes. On the ground, the Panthers ran for 265 yards out of their slot-t offense lead by sophomore Mason Harvey who had 71 yards on just three carries. Senior Antwoin Mebane scored on a 65-yard TD run. Senior Nick Schwarzlose and sophomore Max Stalnaker each caught touchdown passes for the Panthers.

Navarro’s defense scored on three pick-sixes in the game from sophomore Austin Davidson and

seniors Jacob Arias and Gabe Rangel. With the win, the Panthers finish the season 7-3 overall and 4-1 in District 13-4A. Navarro will now play in the UIL Class 4A Bi-District round this Friday against Young Men’s Leadership Academy. The game will be held at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio and will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. We will have the game for you on KWED. (Luling) -- And the Marion Bulldogs are back in the postseason after clinching a spot in the Class 3A playoffs with a 35-6 win on Friday

Junior running back Christian Sanchez ran for 102 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Senior Aidan Batey blocked a punt for the Bulldog special teams and junior linebacker Hadley Mote established the Marion single season tackle record finishing with 126 for the season.

The Bulldogs will next play Jourdanton this Thursday night at Judson ISD Stadium in the Class 3A Bi-District round. The game will kick off at 7 p.m. and we’ll have that game for you on KWED.

Pastor John David Doerfler, a man who truly never seemed to tire, claimed the promise of his baptism on Saturday, November 4th, in his home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 74. A memorial service honoring God and celebrating David’s life will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of the Abiding Presence on the campus of Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. David always wanted to be with his children: Ashley, Meredith, Andi, and Lizzy, and grandchildren: Simon, Pierce, Chloe, Grayson, Georgia, Yuri, and Crosby. He loved projects like building ziplines and forts and giving them all sorts of things they could hurt themselves with.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. James Louis Oates, who unexpectedly left us on October 24, 2023. Known to many as “Goat”, he was born on July 3, 1957. James was an individual of authenticity, generosity, trustworthiness, and an affinity for fun. He was a simple soul but was a rich man because everybody he touched with love, loved him in return.

His radiant personality shone through in his devotion to his family and friends, a legacy that will live on.

James most recently had a respectable career at the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department, proudly retiring in 2022. In his younger years, he worked as a mechanic and semi-truck driver. He spent countless hours rebuilding motors, fixing cars, and building things. He enjoyed the time spent in Wilburn Brown’s garage during the 1980’s building the awardwinning tractor pull truck “Fantasy”. His many years as a truck driver were recognized as accident free, quite an accomplishment for all the miles he traveled across the country. His tireless work ethic was an example to all who knew him. Emphasizing the importance of a job done right, he passed this valuable lesson on to his children, teaching them about the gratification and rewards of hard work. It was during his career at Structural Metals Inc. that he was introduced to his lifelong friends and brothers including Henry “Tequila” Mertz, Ernest “Cowboy” Neumann, Reyes “Chainsaw”

James met the love of his life, Patty McFarland in 2007. The couple shared a vivacious love for one another that was like no other. They were most happy just being together and shared a love for animals, dancing, country music, good food, their family, and friends. Anyone that knew of James and Patty knew that they were each other’s soul mates. June 15, 2013, Patty unexpectedly suffered a major stroke and passed away leaving a void in James’ heart that many could agree would never be filled.

James is survived by his mother, Nellie Oates, his devoted sister, Linda and husband Allan Trial and nephew Scott Trial. His two cherished children; his daughter, Jennifer Horne and husband Glen Horne and his son, Christopher Oates and fiancé April Ferrell. His beloved granddaughter, Presley Hirsch was undoubtedly the apple of his eye. James leaves behind a brother, JJ Edwards. James also loved another brother, David McFarland and his wife Linda. Their children Cheyenne and Hunter were very dear to him and he looked after them as any good uncle should. James was predeceased by his father, Samuel Louis Oates.

The loss of James leaves a void that can never be filled. His authenticity and generosity made every interaction with him feel genuine and warm. He will be dearly missed, but his lessons, his love and his legacy will persist in the hearts of those he left behind. A Celebration of Life is being planned for a later date.

Whitney Robert Reese, USAF (Ret.), age 76 of Seguin, passed away on November 1, 2023. Whitney was born on October 6, 1947, in McAllen, Texas to Betty Jean (Hartford) and Charles Robert Reese.

Whitney graduated from William Adams High School in Alice, Texas, in 1967. He played football and loved hunting and fishing with his mom. After graduation, he met the love of his life, Carol Caron, and they married on February 14, 1969. He joined the United States Air Force and became an airplane mechanic.

Whitney and Carol enjoyed 54 loving years of marriage in which they had four children, ten grandchildren, and several foster children they nurtured and brought up loving the Lord. Whitney accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at age 20. He served the Lord faithfully in the church by serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, security, children’s minister, young adult ministries, and others.

He proudly and faithfully served his country in the Air Force for over 20 years, retiring in 1989. Throughout his life, he enjoyed mentoring and teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, shoot, work on cars, and many other life lessons.

Whitney is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Grace Victoria.

Survivors include his loving wife, Carol (Caron) Reese; brother, Donnie Reese; sister, Sandy Reese; children, Michael Reese, Michelle (Reese) Dorrow, Melinda (Reese)Ramzi, and Matthew Reese; grandchildren, Rebekah (Dorrow) Rodriguez and husband Isaac, Samuel Dorrow, Elijah Dorrow, Katie Dreibrodt, Julie Dreibrodt, Lillie Reese, Amira Ramzi, Aaliyah Ramzi, and Layla Ramzi.

Only Half Of Those Eligible For WIC In 2021 Received Benefits (Washington, DC) -- The government says only half the people who are eligible for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children receive benefits from the program known as WIC. In a report released today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said more than 12-million Americans were eligible for WIC in 2021 but just over six-million received benefits. WIC is a federal grant program that targets pregnant women and women with children up to age five.

Study Finds High School Students Vape Less (Undated) -- It turns out high school students are vaping less. A study by the CDC and FDA found that overall tobacco smoking among high school students has hit an all-time low. E-cigarette use declined by nearly 580-thousand high schoolers since last year. E-cigarettes have been the most commonly used tobacco product among high school students for a decade. The director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products says this is a win for public health.

NYC Restaurants Will Soon Have To Disclose Added Sugar (New York, NY) -- New York City restaurants will soon have to disclose when extra sugar is added to menu items. The New York City Council has passed a first-of-its-kind law requiring local units of restaurant chains with 15 branches or more nationwide to add sugar icons to their menus.

They’d have to disclose when food or beverages contain 100-percent or more of the recommended daily allowance of sugar. The Centers for Science in the Public Interest applauds the new law, which takes effect in 2025, saying a New Yorker dies every 90-seconds of a diabetes-related health issue.

AAA Warns Motorists To Be Wary When Daylight Saving Time Ends (Undated) -- Triple A is reminding drivers to be cautious when travel because Daylight Saving Time is ending this weekend. Clocks are now turned back one hour, resulting in fewer daylight hours. Triple A says drivers will face sun glare during their Monday morning commute.
