Elections administrator gives Election Day run down

(Seguin) – The elections administrator for Guadalupe County is giving voters a behindthe-scenes update following the Tuesday, Nov. 5 Presidential and General Election.

In her post wrap-up, Hayes says things could not have gone any better.

“I would say that putting early voting and election day together, overall, that it was a good election. We had about a 65.5 percent turnout overall. We don’t have final numbers yet because there are 1,160 provisional ballots to review to see if they can be processed and we still have outstanding military and overseas ballots that may be

countable so until we have those numbers, that percentage is not set yet, but it was a very good election. It was very busy,” said Hayes.

In fact, Hayes says the interest in this particular election brought out voters early.

“I know from an early voting standpoint; we broke all of our records. It was an incredible turnout and that was phenomenal. We were comparing it at first to the 2020 (election) because we had three weeks of early voting which we knew it wasn’t the same thing at all but the numbers – Woo! the voters were coming out to vote and we loved that,” said Hayes.

Going GREEN for Vets

Since Monday, Nov. 4, the historic Guadalupe County Courthouse has been illuminated in green as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans. The light will remain through Veterans Day, which is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11 See story on page 3.

Schoolcraft thanks supporters, prepares for the future

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County’s future state representative is not only thanking those who supported him during Tuesday’s Election. He also shares more about his plans to connect with all voters during his move up to Austin.

Republican Alan Schoolcraft defeated Eric Norman, the Democratic opponent, for the District 44 seat in the Texas House of Representatives.

Schoolcraft received 57,278 of the votes cast, or 65 percent, while Norman managed only 30,658 votes or 35 percent.

Schoolcraft says the level of support garnered throughout his campaign has been incredible.

“I so much appreciate their support and the confidence that they have placed in me and I feel a very strong responsibility to follow through and do a good job for them in Austin and I realize that there are some really really serious issues that they care about – not the least of which is the border security, and property taxes trying to get those under control, issues with the growth in our area. So, those are huge issues that we all really care about that I’m going to really be digging into,” said Schoolcraft.

With so much support, Schoolcraft says he understands the responsibilities of this new job and is

committed to making sure that the needs of his future constituents are being met.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about how I could go about making contact with even homeowners’ organizations. I really do want to get out and be able to speak to groups whether its chambers of commerce or whether it’s just local HOAs and so forth. That’s a big way that I want to get involved and be able to know everybody. But also, we are going to have an open-door policy. My staff, I’m going to be very selective in finding the folks who are very responsive and recognize that our first duty is to our constituents. When they have issues, we are going to deal with them. Email, call the office etc. I also intend to be using an email newsletter so I’ll be trying to collect emails of the folks who want to be kept abreast of what is going on and we will try to give them regular newsletters that way so a lot of different approaches but mostly, I just want to hear from people and interact with them,” said Schoolcraft.

Schoolcraft replaces longtime State Representative John Kuempel, who Schoolcraft defeated for the Republican nomination during the runoff election in May. The seat was decided by voters across District 44, including Guadalupe and Gonzales counties.  Schoolcraft will be sworn into office on Jan. 1

Guadalupe County lights up historic courthouse Green in support of Veterans

(Seguin) – Get ready to see green. The historic Guadalupe County Courthouse is being illuminated in green from now through Nov. 11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans. Guadalupe County officials have joined this nationwide initiative, which aims to show veterans that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

Carmen Davila, the public information officer for Guadalupe County, says the county wants everyone to reflect on the service and sacrifices of our Veterans every time they drive or walk by the downtown building.

“Operation Green Light is in support of all veterans letting them know that we are here, and we care, and we are available for them with benefits and services throughout our county. Nationwide, counties will be lighting up their courthouses and

municipal buildings in recognition for veterans,” said Davila.

The effort was officially recognized Tuesday during a Guadalupe County Commissioners Court meeting. Commissioner Pct.

1 Greg Seidenberger, a 20-year Air Force veteran, celebrated by reading a proclamation. Seidenberger added that showing Veterans support doesn’t have to stop with the courthouse.

“I am grateful to see communities across the nation come together to support the men and women who serve to protect our freedom,” said Seidenberger. “If you know a Veteran, shine a green light in your home in their honor, and I encourage all businesses to do the same for their employees who have served in our armed forces.”

Not only is the courthouse

glowing green at night, but the Guadalupe County Veterans Outreach Center at 205 E. Weinert St is also lit with a verdant display.

County officials say veterans seeking camaraderie, support, and information about benefits are encouraged to check out the available services at the VOC. They say veteran service officers are committed to uplifting and supporting veterans through various services and guidance in a welcoming environment.

The center provides veterans a place to connect and share experiences within the community.

The VOC is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Engaging educational sessions are held throughout the month. The Veterans Outreach Center can be contacted by calling (830) 303-8870.

2024 Family Physics Night for local families

Fun science fun for area kids

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- It’s shocking how much fun science can be, and there’s no better way to learn than through handson experience. Budding scientists of all ages are invited tonight to join Texas Lutheran University’s Physics Department and Society of Physics Students as they present this year’s Family Physics Night: Electricity and Magnetism.

“The TLU Physics Department loves the opportunity to connect with the community and share the passion we have for understanding the natural and technological world around us,” says Dr. Calvin Berggren, associate professor and Physics Department chair. “The event is also very beneficial for students and increases their own excitement, understanding, and confidence in the subject of physics.”

Event participants can look forward to an exciting demo show beginning at 6:30 p.m., as well as interactive stations about electric motors, electric generators, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Berggren says they’ll even get the chance to create their own motors.

Kids—as well as kids at heart—are encouraged to attend. “Family Physics Night over the years has drawn

people of all ages including elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and adults,” Berggren says. “There is plenty to get excited about for every age and for all levels of physics background.”

This year’s event, which is free and open to all, will take place on November 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in TLU’s Jackson Student Activity Center in Jackson Park, across from Bulldog Stadium.

Election, continued.

Although they stayed behind tying up some loose ends, Hayes says all 38 boxes were accounted for by 10:30 p.m. She says much of that success on election night is attributed to both the voters and the poll workers who always kept things under control.

“They were overall very patient with the lines, with our technological challenges that we experienced from time to time – you know for us. It just wasn’t the challenge of a presidential election which is always an opportunity for growth for all of us, but we changed into voter registration systems and poll book systems right before the election which is not ideal, and we understood that going into it but it seemed like the best choice, so we had a learning curve. Our poll workers had a learning curve. They were phenomenal. The poll books worked great, and the poll workers were amazing. But overall, I would say it was a success,” said Hayes.

Not only was this a popular election, but it was also a bigger one for the elections staff – a staff that Hayes says deserves all the credit for putting in the hours over the last several weeks.

“So, there were 11 local elections tied in with this presidential election. So, it just wasn’t the presidential election. We had 73 different ballot styles and so, there’s a lot of reporting – all of those pieces that increase the complexity of the election and it was a lot. My staff did amazing. I’m so proud of the team and their determination and commitment to getting the job done even with the long hours. It’s very impressive to me,” said Hayes.

Hayes says once every ballot is accounted for, the final (unofficial) results will be posted on the elections office website. The official wrap-up of the Nov. 5 Election, however, won’t be until December, as Hayes confirms a runoff election in the city of Cibolo.

Seguin and Marion advance to volleyball area rounds

(San Antonio) — The Seguin Lady Matador volleyball team is moving on to the Area round after sweeping past San Antonio John Jay in the Class 5A Division 1 Bi-District playoff on Tuesday night.

The Lady Mats won the match 25-23, 25-19, 25-13. Seguin advances to the area round for the first time since 2018.

Down 15-18 in the first set, the Lady Matadors took a time out and would go on a 10-5 run to win the set. Seguin would use that momentum to jump out to an early 11-5 lead in the second set. Jay would briefly take a lead in the set, but the Lady Mats would rally again to go up 2-0. With a lead, Seguin kept their foot on the gas in the third set to power past the Lady Mustangs and take the playoff match.

Senior Karina Lerma led the Lady Mats with 18 kills. Lerma ran up her total using a number of drops shots around the Lady Mustang tall front line to find open spots on the Jay side of the court.

Seguin head coach Ashley Farris said Lerma was able to confuse the Lady Mustang defense.

“That’s what a pin hitter has to do. She did an excellent job switching up everything. Their defense could not read her So, she just did a great job executing.”

Lady Matador sophomore Ellie Anderson had four service aces on the night. Two of those came at the end of the second set to give Seguin a commanding lead going into the final set. Anderson also led Seguin with five blocks. Junior Gisele Morales topped the Lady Mats with 31 assists. Lerma had 24 digs to pace Seguin in that category.

The Lady Mats will next play Smithson Valley in the Area round. The Lady Rangers swept past Hays on Tuesday night to advance to the second round. The area round match between Seguin and Smithson Valley will take place Friday at New Braunfels Canyon High School. First serve is set for 6 p.m.

(Devine) — In the Class 3A Division 1 Bi-District playoffs, the Marion Lady Bulldogs won a five-set thriller over 24th-ranked Crystal City at Devine High School on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs came back from down two sets to one to take the match 12-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12. The playoff victory was the first for Marion in seven years.

Junior Madi Love had 22 kills to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Senior Bristin Birdwell led Marion with 42 digs. And junior Ellie Parker set up her hitters leading the Lady Bulldogs with 45 assists.

Marion will next take on Goliad in the area round. The date and location of the playoff is still to decided.

(Pleasanton) — And the Navarro Lady Panthers, winners over Lago Vista on Monday in the Class 4A Division 2 Bi-District round, will play Devine on Thursday in the Area round.

The Lady Panthers defeated Devine with a sweep in the regular season on September 10th at Navarro High School. Devine and Navarro will play on Thursday at Pleasanton High School. First serve in the Area round match is set for 8 p.m.

U.S. Supreme Court To Hear Hospital Funding Case

(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing arguments heard Tuesday in a case that could affect a billion dollars a year in federal funding for hospitals. Hospitals get some reimbursement from the Department of Health and Human Services for giving care to Medicare patients eligible for financial aid from the Supplemental Security Income program. An Illinois hospital argued that the payments aren’t properly calculated and that the feds should pay more. HHS claimed it’s following the letter of the law.

CDC Report: Many Healthcare Workers Saying “No” To COVID-19 Boosters

(Atlanta, GA) -- Five out of six health care workers in hospitals and nursing homes are saying “no” to COVID-19 boosters. The CDC is reporting that just over 15-percent got boosted during the 2023-24 respiratory virus season. The drop-off came at the end of a Biden administration vaccine mandate and free government-funded COVID shots. A recent survey shows that despite the fact that many healthcare workers view COVID as a serious health threat, they’re not that confident in the safety, effectiveness and benefit of COVID-19 vaccine. However, 80-percent of hospital workers got flu shots while 45-percent did so at nursing homes.

Supply And Insurance Hurdles For Popular Weight Loss Drugs

(Undated) -- Obesity doctors are reporting high demand for weight loss drugs but say supply and insurance hurdles persist. The list price for a month of Eli Lilly’s Zepbound and Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy is more than one-thousand-dollars and many insurance companies won’t cover it. Because of that, the two pharmaceutical companies are offering coupons that slash the cost of those drugs by about half. But many patients are turning to unregulated and untested versions sold online which can be bought for about 250-dollars. Patients also complain about having to go from pharmacy to pharmacy in search of Zepbound or Wegovy in the dose they’ve been prescribed. The Food and Drug Administration, which took Zepbound off its shortage list early last month, hasn’t commented.

Falling Back Impacts On Health

(Sacramento, CA) -- Daylight Saving Time is now over until next March. The time change affects people in different ways with some experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. Dr. Don Bucklin with WorkCare says it’s hard to shift to starting our day in the dark and ending it in the dark and that clock changes also disrupt our sleep, metabolism, and stress levels. Those changes can make us feel tired or irritable, boost our appetite and disrupt our movement and reaction times, raising the risk of injury. Kids and early risers suffer most from clock changes but Dr. Bucklin says when we do fall back, doctors see fewer heart attacks and strokes.
