The group will be hosting a free pancake breakfast this Saturday in honor of all veterans. Seguin Elks Exalted Ruler John Seiler, says the pancake breakfast is the least the group can do for such a deserving group of men and women.

"The entire organization is committed to veterans. We built the first ever veterans hospital and gave it to the government in World War II and we also made the first GI loans and turned that over to the government. So the Elks as a whole, for 152 years, has been about veterans and charity and about children," said Seiler.

Seiler says he wants all veterans to come out and take advantage of this opportunity to not only have a delicious breakfast but to gather with others.

"I am a Vietnam Veteran myself and I know what it means to us when someone does recognize what we have went through and that they somehow appreciated our efforts," said Seiler. The pancake breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Seguin Elks Lodge. Cost for non-veterans is $5.

In addition to Saturday's breakfast, the group will again be inviting veterans out to the lodge on Wednesday for a free dinner and dance celebration. The event featuring music by the Wyatt Arp Band will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Dinner for non-veterans is $7.

(Seguin) -- Why worry about buying tamales when you can now learn how to make them yourself? Spots are still available for this weekend's annual tamale making class at Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin. The class titled "Community Tamalada: A Culinary Experience” is set for Saturday morning at the cultural arts center. Beto Rinco, Teatro program coordinator, says the class is designed to take students from step one all the way to the finished product.

"Since, we are a non-profit organization, we ask for a $15 donation and with that $15 donation per each student -- that actually goes into the pot for the ingredients for that day. By the end of that day, each student will have at least a dozen tamales to take home cooked," said Rincon. Rincon says the art of tamale making is a rich cultural experience -- an experience that Teatro wants to share with everyone. "There was an interest in the public to learn how to make tamales but a lot of people are intimidated by the process of making tamales and honestly, it is a long process that families over gen-

So, historically, it is a process that takes a while but the Mexican-American culture -- they use that as family time. It is an introduction for beginners, people who are just interested, you have never tried or maybe they've tried on their own and they failed so they are looking for some advice from an expert on tamale making (or) they just recently lost their grandmother who would have been the person that headed up the effort to make tamales so they see our class and they're like we'll this is a way we can connect with our past descendants and they'd be really proud if they know that we are over there trying to learn. That kind of thing," said Rincon.

ARF to host rabies clinic this Saturday at Max Starcke Park Pavilion

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin Animal Rescue Foundation is again making it easier for pet owners to get their dogs and cats vaccinated.

ARF President Colleen Supulver says veterinarians and volunteers will return this weekend to Max Starcke Park for its annual Rabies Clinic.

"It's a drive-thru clinic. You just drive up and get your shots. The shots are $10 each. You save money because you don't have to make an appointment. You don't have to wait and they are good for people who can't make ends meet and it gets their animals compliant with the city as well as with the county if you want to have your cat protected or your dog protected," said Supulver.

Supulver says it's important for the group to host such clinics.

She says the non-profit organization realizes the importance of making sure all animals are taken care of in the Seguin community.

"This is one the major things why animals go into shelters because it is a state law that they have to have a rabies vaccine and if they don't, they won't be able to retrieve their dog and sometimes are even fined for not having one. I think this program will go far and I hope to get all of Guadalupe County. Right now, we are only really doing Guadalupe County with a Seguin mailing address," said Supulver.

The rabies clinic is open to Seguin residents only. Proof of residency will be required. The event will be held from 9 to noon Saturday or until supplies last. Cost is $10 a shot. The clinic again will be held at the large pavilion located on the park's west side.

Marion ISD Superintendent Kelly Lindholm says in anticipation of saying goodbye to the old gym in its current state, the district is asking that folks come out to "reminisce and highlight" some of their favorite moments from the years past. "It's interesting, you walk into a place like that and the memories just come back. There is a smell in a place like that. There's sights that you take in. The old wooden bleachers -what we affectionately called the ‘dungeon’ which was the old dressing room. Everybody that comes is going to remember something from that facility because it is so unique and so, it's a chance to come out and just walk around and take a look at it and I think the memories and the fun and the excitement. Maybe it was a pep rally that was held in there or a band concert or whatever it was. Most folks that were here between the 50s and the 80s had some experience in that gym and like I said, it is going to be taken down to its basic structure so this is going to be kind of the last opportunity for the public and former coaches and players to come out and just walk the facility. Take pictures or reunite with old friends and just tell stories about what their experience was in

"It's just a part of the Krueger Primary Campus. Voters in May, approved a $22 million bond project which included $9 million for the complete renovation and repurpose of the old gym. Lindholm says while they hope to incorporate much of the historical charm into the new building, the new space will be revitalized into something different for the district.

Matadors battle Jaguars for No. 2 playoff seed, Friday's game to air on KWED (Austin) - Seguin and Austin-LBJ square off for the No. 2 playoff seed in District 12-5A-Division I on the final Friday of the regular season at Austin ISD's Nelson Field.

Both teams are 5-1 in district play with losses to Dripping Springs, who has already clinched the 12-5A Division I title and top playoff seed.

Seguin is 5-4 overall in Travis Bush's fourth season as head coach after closing down the old Matador Stadium with a 66-0 rout of AustinNavarro last Friday.

The 7-2 Jaguars, coached by Jamal Fenner, rolled over Austin-Travis 550 last week in their third straight shutout since the 17-14 setback to Dripping Springs. The LBJ defense has only allowed 71 points total in nine games (7.8 per game) and no more than 27 points in any single contest. The unit's senior leaders include cornerback and Rice commit Sean Fresch, last year's District Defensive MVP, and defensive end Gabe Smith, the Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2018. Bush says slow developing plays won't be part of the plan as he and offensive coordinator Brandon LaPorte try to

solve the LBJ defensive puzzle.

"We've got to find a way to run the ball effectively, we've got to hit some things quick," Bush said. "You're not going to get outside a lot on these guys. They do a good job leveraging things. They've got great team speed.

We're not going to be able to hold the ball long back at quarterback, so we've got to get the ball out of our hands quick, and the biggest thing we do, is we've got to get positive yards.

We can't give up negative plays, lose five, 10 yards like we did in the Drip game at times and put us behind the chains."

The Matadors have the skill players to execute that plan if the offensive line can keep the Jaguars out of the backfield. Senior quarterback Jhalen Mickles enters Friday with a .667 completion percentage, 1,387 passings yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions to go with 252 rushing yards and six scores on the ground.

Sophomore receiver Clark Ullrich has been Mickles' top target with 43 catches for 538 yards and seven touchdowns. Junior tailback Marques Washington is the first Seguin player to top 1,000 rushing yards since Brandon Palomares in 2016. He

enters the LBJ game with 1,074 yards on 147 carries (7.3 avg.) and the highest individual touchdown total of any Matador this century with 19.

The Seguin defense will try to slow down an explosive LBJ offense led by quarterback Hunter Scott (24 TD passes), receiver Andrew Mukuba (27 rec., 544 yds., 10 TD) and a committee of running-backs that have filled in admirably for injured starter Da'Qwon Donaldson, who hasn't played since early October. The afforementioned Fresch enters Friday with 377 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Anthony Haynes totaled 124 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries last week against Travis. The Matadors' defensive leaders include sophomore linebacker John Michael Mata (100 tackles), defensive end Ian Box (19 tacklesfor-loss, six sacks), safety Dillion Gutierrez (2 Int. ret. for TD), and cornerback Desvonn Smith (10 PBU, Int. ret. for TD).

Panthers chase perfect regular season, top playoff seed in road clash vs. Bandera (New (Bandera) - Navarro looks to cap a 10-0 regular season and 5-0 run to the outright District 13-4ADivision II championship Friday with a road game against a Bandera team seeking a share of the district title.

Even if Bandera (8-1, 3-1) pulls the upset and creates a three-way tie with Navarro (9-0, 4-0) and Wimberley (72, 3-1) for the district title, the margin of victory would have to be at least 18 points to wrestle the No. 1 playoff seed away from the Panthers. The Bulldogs, coached by Joel FontenotAmedee, have won two straight since losing to Wimberley 56-28 on Oct. 18, most recently a 49-6 triumph over Austin-Eastside Memorial.

Aside from the Wimberley game, the Bandera defense has been solid, holding six of its nine opponents below 20 points. Navarro head coach Rod Blount identifies the attribute his Slot-T rushing attack will try to neutralize with a physical approach at the line of scrimmage.

"Team speed," Blount said. "Just a scrappy defense. Guys get blocked, they get off blocks and make tackles for two-yard gains. They bend a little bit, but don't ever really break. It's a lot of guys that are playing passionate right now. They're playing good

defense, flying around, and getting after people."

Bandera is tasked with slowing a Navarro offense that stalled early in last week's 22-14 home win over Cuero, but is still averaging 42 points and 384.6 rushing yards per game.

Senior fullback Euler Deleon enters Friday with 1,303 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground, with Jean "MoMo" Sims contributing 648 yards and six scores. The speedy Johnny Alegria is back in the lineup after missing significant time with injuries.

His season totals are up to 393 yards and four touchdowns rushing to go with 91 receiving yards and two scores on four catches.

Mark Wozniak paces the Navarro defense with 104 tackles through nine games.

Brett Butler enters Friday with a team-high 16 tackles for loss. Gabriel Means and Brian Holmes each have three sacks. Sims and Alegria have collected two interceptions apiece.

(Marion) - Marion needs San Antonio-Cole to beat Jourdanton to have a shot at the No. 1 playoff seed in District 15-3A-Division I, but the Bulldogs can still claim a share of the district title with a win over Lytle in Friday's regular season finale at Veterans Stadium.

The Bulldogs are 6-3 overall, 4-1 in district play, and tied for the 15-3A-Division I lead with Jourdanton in Ryne Miller's second season as head coach after a 24-14 win in Cotulla last Friday.

Jourdanton beat Marion 35-14 on Oct. 11 and owns the head-tohead tiebreak should the teams finish tied for first.

Lytle is 1-8 overall, winless in district play at 0-5, and out of the playoff race after falling to Karnes City 42-27 last Friday.

The Pirates showed signs of offensive life in that defeat as quarterback Drew Williams threw for 203 yards and produced three total touchdowns while receiver Mark Cantu hauled in seven catches for 107 yards and a score.

"They're a big RPO team," Miller said. "They like to spread it out a

little bit, so it's just putting our guys in position of trusting their keys when it comes to that, and like every week, you've got to put pressure on the quarterback that throws the football. But they've done a good job. They've been in every game this year, and they've really competed. Our kids are excited for it, I think they're a great football team, and we'll be ready for them."

The Marion offense hopes to feast on a Lytle defense giving up 38 points per game this season.

The Bulldogs' most productive players include senior quarterback Zach Goodwin (1,697 yds. & 14 TD passing, 532 yds. & 9 TD rushing), running-back Ray Rayos (614 yds., 2 TD), and receivers Jacob Devora (37 rec., 586 yds., 8 TD), Jayden Williams (29 rec., 455 yds., 5 total TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt (18 rec., 298 yds., 3 TD).

(Belton) - No. 25 Texas Lutheran looks to secure its first NCAA Division III playoff berth since 2014 and a share of its first ever American Southwest Conference championship Saturday with a road win over the defending national and conference champion, No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor.

The Bulldogs are 7-1 in Carl Gustafson's third season as head coach and carry a perfect 7-0 ASC record into Belton after a 3414 home win over Belhaven last Saturday. The 8-0 Crusaders are also 7-0 in conference play with sights on a 15th straight ASC title under 22nd-year head coach Pete Fredenburg after dismantling Louisiana College 82-0 last week.

Mary Hardin-Baylor has won 23 straight games and 52 of its last 53 as a program. The Cru's last ASC loss was a 29-26 setback to Hardin Simmons in 2015. UMHB has won 33 consecutive conference games since then, including a 50-15 win over TLU in Seguin last season. The Bulldogs are just 1-20 all time against the Crusaders, with the only TLU win in 1999. Mary Hardin-Baylor narrowly escaped defeat on Oct. 25 when Anthony Avila beat the buzzer with a 43-yard field goal to stave off Hardin Simmons' upset bid 15-14 at Crusader Stadium.

TLU is well equipped to follow the same formula the Cowboys used in the near-upset with a strong rushing attack and a stingy defense. The Bulldogs rank third in the ASC in scoring (16.1) and total defense (316.2), lead the conference and rank fourth nationally with 24 takeaways and third nationally with a plus17 turnover margin, and pace the ASC with 27 sacks (20th nationally).

The Bulldogs rushing average of 258.5 yards per contest ranks No. 2 in the ASC and 13th best in Division III football. As has been the case much of the season, TLU boasts four of the conference's top 10 individual rushers in Chris Monroe (568 yds, 4 TD), Wade Freeman (480 yds., 6 TD), Austin Matthews (477

yds., 5 TD), and Ian Leslie (371 yds., 4 TD). Those numbers are all encouraging, but Mary Hardin-Baylor matches or exceeds most of them. The Crusaders lead the ASC in scoring offense (50.4, 4th nationally), scoring defense (7.4, 2nd nationally), total defense (192.1, 4th nationally), rushing defense (64.2, 8th nationally), and pass defense (127.9, 8th nationally). UMHB is just behind TLU with 23 takeaways on the year and a plus-14 turnover margin.

The Crusaders' individual offensive leaders include quarterback Jase Hammack (767 yds., 12 TD, 1 Int.), running-back Jo'Vel McDaniel (467 yds., 7 TD), and All-ASC receiver Jonel Reed (35 rec., 619 yds., 9 TD). Twelve different UMHB players have scored rushing touchdowns this season, while eight different Crusaders have pulled in touchdown catches.

Both defenses are loaded with star players. Senior defensive end Manny Longoria earned All-ASC and and All-Region recognition in 2018, is TLU's D3 era career leader in sacks (24.5) and tackles-for-loss (46) and was a pre-season AllAmerica selection. Senior cornerback Kedrick Ward enters Saturday with a conference-leading four interceptions, and freshman safety Daniel Enriquez has three.

The Crusaders are led by 2018 ASC Defensive Lineman of the Year Joey Longoria up front and Defensive Player of the Year Jefferson Fritz in the secondary. Linebacker Akeem Jackson has a team-high three interceptions, fellow linebacker Tevin Jones leads the conference with an average of 11.1 tackles per game, and defensive end Khevon Sheppard has six of the Cru's 25 sacks.

MSgt. James “Jim” Ronald Christy Jr., USAF Ret. of Seguin, Texas entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at the age of 84. He was born to James R. Christy Sr. and Thelma M. Campbell Christy on December 30, 1934. James is preceded in death by both of his parents and his loving wife Enilda Christy.

James was usually a quiet and gentle man until he had something important to say. He was his special needs’ sons fierce advocate and his daughter’s greatest supporter.

James was known for his kindness and for how much he cared for those he called friends. His wicked sense of humor and stubbornness were just two of his fine qualities. He will be missed and always loved “mucho grande.” Interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. in Committal Shelter #3. Eva Luna Chavez Eva Luna Chavez of Seguin, Texas was welcomed into our Fathers Heavenly Kingdom on Sunday, November 3, 2019 at the age of 87.

She was born to Martin Luna and Rafaela Vielma Luna on May 19, 1932 in Seguin, Texas. Eva is preceded in death by both of her parents; two infant sons; grandson, Dwayne Cook and her sisters, Rachel Luna Guajardo and Carrie Herrera. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Epimenio Chavez Sr., children, Teresa Chavez, Ancelmo Chavez, Ester Cook, Epimenio Chavez Jr. and Eva Marie

Eva attended catholic school at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, she reached the 8th grade and proceeded to then obtain her GED soon after.

She loved the church and being around the church so much that her destiny took her to become a teacher at Our Lady of Guadalupe, from catechism class to marital classes she taught it all.

She was the president of the infamous Guadalupanas at Our Lady of Guadalupe two times and enjoyed traveling to San Antonio and Fredericksburg.

Anywhere she would travel to she would do it with her sisters. She loved spending time with her sisters and her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all of those who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Palmer Mortuary.

Librado "Lee" M. Ramirez passed away with his wife by his side on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the age of 70. He was born on August 21, 1949 to Librado and Yladia Ramirez Sr. He was a Vietnam Veteran who served our country from 1969-1971.

Lee was follower of Christ and a business man who owned "The Royal Touch" which left the door open and gave him the opportunity to give his testimony, a true follower of Christ. Lee never met a stranger and was known for helping anyone he came in contact with. His humble and loving personality will be deeply missed by all of those who were lucky enough to know him.

He is preceded in death by both of his parents and three infant siblings. Left to treasure his memories is his loving wife of 50 years, Otilia M. Self-Cannibalizing Mitochondria May Set Stage For ALS Development

Two-Million Pounds Of Chicken Recalled Over Contamination Fears

(Chicago, IL) -- Neurology researchers at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago say they've made an important discovery related to ALS. It's that self-cannibalizing mitochondria in the brain may play a critical role in the development of the disease. Dr. Hande Ozdinler [[ HAHN-day Oz-DIN-ler ]] says her team found that mitochondria eat themselves up in the motor neurons that become diseased in ALS. She says it's an unexpected find that could lead to new ways to fight ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.

(Undated) -- Over two-million pounds of chicken is being recalled over fears they could contain pieces of metal. The Department of Agriculture says the chicken came from Simmons Prepared Foods and was distributed to a number of states across the country.

There's been no confirmed cases of people being impacted by metal in the chicken.

New Strain Of HIV Found

NY Death Certificates Will Specify Opioid Following Overdose Deaths

(Undated) -- Scientists are reporting that they've discovered a new strain of HIV. The research published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes said it's part of the same group of virus subtypes that caused the global HIV pandemic. It's the first time a new strain of HIV has been found in almost 20 years. Scientists aren't sure whether this new strain acts differently in the body at all. Doctors believe current treatments are effective at treating this new strain.

(Albany, NY) -- New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a law that requires death certificates list the opioid used following fatal overdoses. The hope is that it makes data collection easier, as officials look for ways to combat the growing problem. Governor Cuomo called it a common sense move that will help to eventually end the opioid crisis. The legislation takes effect immediately.
