SEF delivers largest grant awards in district history
Teachers, local classrooms surprised with grant money
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – It was a day of surprises and celebration throughout the campuses of the Seguin ISD. On Thursday, the Seguin Education Foundation SurPRIZE Patrol spent the day delivering thousands of dollars in grants to teachers across the district. These competitive grants that teachers were encouraged to submit proposed innovative teaching tools for the classroom.
This year’s rollout of the grant prizes, however, was one for the record books. That’s according to SEF Executive Director Jill Nash.
“It’s been incredible to see the faces of the teachers as they are surprised for being awarded the grants. We were able to award 29 grants this year with $105,000. That is award winning. We have not been able to do that ever in the history of the education foundation and so we have been able to make more stops at each campus to award more grants and the kids are excited as the band is walking down the hall playing their music and then we are giving them high fives as we are hyping up the excitement and there were teachers that were just tearing up because they were just so thankful to be able to win the grants from the education foundation,” said Nash. Weekend workshop to help address emotional triggers
Limited seats available for pair of free workshops
(Seguin) – Individuals this weekend will be gifted with some much need emotional support. On Saturday, there will be two opportunities for folks to learn more about balancing their emotions through an Understanding Emotional Triggers Small Group Workshop. The free community workshops will be held from 10 a.m. to noon or from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Seguin Public Library.
Helping to facilitate the workshops is Paula King Harper. Harper, who is originally from Seguin, brings with her a host of experience. Not only is she a licensed and ordained pastor for a church in San Antonio but she also serves as a chaplain at University Hospital plus is a certified sanctuary mental health coach and life coach.
Harper says she felt the call to offer up these workshop opportunities not only in Seguin but also in San Antonio, Boerne and Universal City.
Unfortunately, she says people continue to operate not knowing the real truths behind their emotional issues.
“For instance, you might run into somebody who is just angry all the time and we say ‘oh, well they have anger issues.” Okay, but why? Why, do they have anger issues? Or what has happened to this person? And so, a lot of
people don’t like to dig into the things of why I behave the way I behave. But there is a root for everything. This is my firm belief and there is statistical background that there is a root for everything from our behavior,” said King-Harper.
King-Harper says her desire is to be available in the community so that folks can have a place to start and have a place in which they no longer feel alone.
“The Triggers Workshop is actually geared to just maybe introduce people to what emotional triggers are or remind them and discuss ways of managing triggers – even explaining or exploring childhood trauma and discussing the mental versus the spiritual because some people want to say that everything is demonic or some people might not even understand what that is or everything is mental and psychiatric and we need medication for everything and that might not be the case but if it is the case that somebody needs medication, by all means get the medication but also do the therapy, do the work. I’m just here to try to help communities be healed and be whole and be healthy emotionally,” said King-Harper.

Art & Wine Walk set for this Saturday in Downtown Seguin
(Seguin) – Seguin will again be hitting the streets for the annual Art & Wine Walk.
The Seguin Commission on the Arts will hold the third annual Art & Wine Walk this Saturday from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.
Participants will check in at Central Park to get their event wristband, commemorative wine glass, tasting tickets, and bag.
The Art & Wine Walk boasts nine downtown stops this year. They include Sips & Gulps, 1916 Bar & Bistro, Big Chief Cigar Co., The Palace Theater, Seguin Art League, Pecantown Books & Brews, You’re So Crafty, Gift & Gourmet, and Morris Bermudez and Clifton PLLC.
Each stop will feature local artists and their work. There is no set order for people to visit each stop.
Kelly Donegan Follis, chair of the arts commission, says tickets are $40 per person and includes a commemorative wine glass, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and 12 one ounce wine tastings.
She says it’s a good value that adds up to about two glasses of wine plus plenty of great treats along the way. More importantly, she says it’s all for a good cause.
“The mission of the Commission on the Arts is to bring art to our neighbors and those who visit our lovely city. This event not only highlights our talented artists and their work, but also gives folks a chance to experience our city and area wineries, while helping to raise more money to fund public art projects. We offer a grant program to expand our city’s public art offerings and support our local artists. We are glad to bring this event to Seguin for another year!” said Follis.
Follis says several wineries will be set up at the various establishments. They include Windmill Farm
Winery, San Ducerro Winery, Blue Mule Winery, Decadent Saint Winery, and Andustoria Wines, as well as tastings of house wines at Sips & Gulps,1916 Bar & Bistro, and Pecantown Books & Brews.
On top of all the wine swirling, Johnny Pickles Distillery will be hosting a pop-up tasting for the public at Big Chief Cigar Co.
Local artists to be featured throughout include Liz Romero, Sara IR Rosales, Donna Rossnagel, A. Luis Works, Felipe de Jesus Bermudez Miranda, Laura Dodson,
Grit Art, Betti J. Gregoire, Kim Schmitt, Ohso Fabone, Jud McCallick, Matthew Chase, and Travis Church. The Seguin Art League will also be open.
Discounted tickets for Veterans are currently available at the Seguin Visitor Center at 200 S. Austin Street. Veteran tickets are $30 each.
Participants are encouraged to check in on that Saturday afternoon in Central Park.
Online tickets can be purchased at www.visitseguin.com/art-winewalk.
continued.
King-Harper says identifying these triggers that often debilitate a person’s daily lives is the first step toward healing. More importantly, she says it’s never too late.
“I’m just going to come from the chaplain’s perspective now. I am at the bedside of many people who are in their last moments of life, and they are holding regrets that they didn’t talk about this or share that with someone or get help or they died with painful secrets, or they’ve been caring burdens for years and decades and just never found emotional freedom. So, the workshops are small groups. There is
a maximum number per group and that is intentional because I don’t want people to feel overwhelmed. Exposure will only come from them, but resources will be shared,” said King-Harper.
Although the workshops are free. Individuals are required to register. There is limited seating, and no walk-ins will be accepted. Again, individuals or family members dealing with someone needing help are encouraged to select one of the two scheduled workshops this Saturday. A parent or guardian must accompany anyone 17 years or younger. To sign up visit www. harperministries.org or call 210538-4232.
SEF, continued.
Through community donations and fundraising, the SEF works to support the funding of these classroom tools that otherwise could not be afforded through the regular school budget.
In fact, at one of the surprise visits at Ball Early Childhood Center (ECC), Nash was able to celebrate a community partner who also understood the assignment of helping students be successful
“HEB loved your grant so much that they have personally sponsored this for you. So, we have gift cards in the amount of what you need to make this happen. What’s going to happen is we are going to put you in touch with the head marketing director for HEB and they are going to work with you individually to help you get these spent to cover everything you need in your budget,” announced Nash.
Sharing in that moment were Pre-K teachers Kathrynn Morales, Jeanene Nickerson and Rachel Marek. The trio was surprised with a large check for $1,550 for its Cooking Up Learning: A Hands On Pre-K Experience.
Although they felt they had a good chance to be selected, Marek says the surprise came in knowing that HEB was backing their classroom plan.
“HEB, I mean that was a big surprise adding in HEB. The education
foundation grants have been really great to us. We won a bike grant last year to help our kids with that for gross motor skills and this one, we will just continue to push for more and push for doing great things for our students, our little Ball ECC 3 and 4 year-olds,” said Marek.
As for the curriculum itself, Marek says she’s excited for the kids and can’t wait to get cooking.
“We are able to just bring in a lot of different curriculum pieces, math, writing and something that is really engaging for the kids. So, what it is –it’s like little carts that we can push into the classroom, and we can cook with the kids, so we are measuring. We are talking about measurements. We are talking about different writing. So, it’s just a wonderful way to engage all the different content areas,” said Marek.
Again, more than two dozen other cool classroom programs were funded thanks to the efforts of the SEF.
The folks making up the SurPRIZE Patrol included SEF board of directors, Seguin ISD Superintendent Veronica Vijil; members of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees and central office staff. Also accompanying the group on the large yellow traveling school bus were members of the Seguin High School Band which also spent half of its day providing celebration music in the hallways. New to the group were high school journalism students and photographers assigned to capture the moments.
