Annual Veterans Day Parade is cancelled, all other programs still on as scheduled By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Today's annual Veterans Day Parade has been cancelled. Now although the parade is no longer on the schedule, the Veterans Day Program that traditionally follows is still on as planned but has been relocated from Veterans Park to the American Legion Hall. The changes for today's program were announced Friday by the Doug Herrle Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter #61. DAV officials say the potential for rain and chilly weather played as factors in making the decision to cancel the parade. The DAV plays host for the event each year bringing together veterans from all the various organizations in the area. DAV Commander Linda Truax, says they apologize for any inconvenience that this might have caused but felt it was the right thing to do. "We do have a large proportion of our community that participates in this event that are seniors and with the weather expected to be in the chilly 40s, we thought it was best to move everything indoors but we still encourage everybody to come and participate and acknowledge the service of

our veterans and it's not just the veterans but the leaders in veterans court and this includes anything from our families, our caregivers, our city which has been outstanding, businesses such as Home Depot, the United Way, the Golden Corral and really special to me as the commander of the DAV is our auxiliary unit. Each individual military service organization has a great support channel through our auxiliaries and they in many ways lead the support that we need to help others," said Truax. Helping to celebrate today’s national observance will the annual Veterans Day Program which begins today at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall. The hall is located at 618 E. Kingsbury St. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. A host of other Veterans Day celebrations are also on the schedule today and for the rest of the week.

The event will be held today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the McQueeney Lions Club located on Highway 78. On Wednesday, the Seguin FFA and NJROTC will host its third Annual Lazy U Ranch Veteran's Day Meeting beginning at 6 p.m. The Lazy U Ranch is located at 450 Naumann Rd.

NB couple saves lives while Praying for our veterans heading to work in Seguin By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Geronimo) -- A New Braunfels couple is being applauded for heroic efforts in helping to rescue residents from a burning home.

“We’ll get those little devils!”
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.
Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says the fire was reported just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday just north of Geronimo in the 7200 block of State Highway 123 North. Recognized as the heroic passersbys were Patrice and husband Jamie Douglas. Pinder says the couple was quick to dial 911 and jump into action. "This person (Patrice) told me that they drive by this house everyday and they noticed that something was a little bit different that day. One of the people that actually assisted has been in the first responder business for a while. She was a dispatcher and so they've been around first responders so she said she just kind of jumped into action and helped pull people out and that it was kind of her daily life. (That) is how she reported it to me," said Pinder. Patrice says she and her husband are just glad to have been at the right place at the right time. Patrice, says she was especially grateful to not only physically assist the trio of residents out of the home but also convince them to leave.
A total of four residents reportedly lived in the house. Another brother had already left for work before the fire started. Pinder says the fire began in a bedroom and believes it was electrical.
"I work at Green Gate Garden Center on 123 and we were driving to work that morning and just happened to notice something a little different in that window
Patrice says she has since been able to return to check up on the family who has been staying in a hotel and even has offered up a little assistance since the men in particular lost most of their belongings.

of the house. It was a little flicker and within a milli second, it just shot up a little bit with smoke and I looked a little flicker and within a milli second, it just shot up a little bit with smoke and I looked at my husband and he looked at me and I just said make a u-turn and we made the u-turn and by the time we got back to the house, the whole side room was on fire," said Patrice. "A gentleman was coming down the ramp and I don't really remember jumping out of the truck and I asked if there was anybody else in the house. He said his sister was in the house. When I ran into the house, I didn't even tell anybody I was going in but I just ran in. The sister was in the kitchen and I told her she needed to get out and she said no, that her brother had it under control and I said no, we need to get out and she said she couldn't walk so she grabbed her arm crutches and I helped her to the door and then she said 'my mom!' and I was like where is your mom? She said down the hall. I ran down the hallway and I saw mom sitting in the bedroom and I said let's go, let's go and she said 'no, it's okay.' I said no, we need to go now and she grabbed her purse and that's when I got behind her and helped her to the doorway."

LULAC raises concerns about Texas Ranger mural -Family Medicine -HormoneTherapy -Children -Women’s Health -Geriatrics -Aesthetics Dr. Nicole Talbot -Weight Loss

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The city's newest mural in downtown Seguin drew praise from the public when it was first installed on the north side of the Aumont building on North Austin Street. People took to social media to discuss the artwork which features images representing some of the Texas Rangers who were a big part of the history of the development of the city of Seguin. The mural pays tribute to those men, but it also does something else. For some people of Mexican descent, they say those images don't represent heroes, but instead they represent the men who in some cases went on murderous rampages -- killing hundreds or thousands of Hispanic people in Texas. Members of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council 682 appeared before the Seguin City Council on Tuesday to formally protest the city's decision to commission the mural. Chili Ornelas read a resolution from the organization. It was critical of the mural and suggests that it was insensitive to have that
image displayed, and it was inappropriate to use public funds to help pay for it. "The League of Unite Latin American Citizens would like to go on record of supposing the promotion of any mural or any advertisement that highlights a dark chapter of our history. When large numbers of Americans of Mexican descent were murdered with impunity by the Texas Rangers in particular the period of 1910-1920 when over 5,000 Americans of Mexican descent were killed. The complaints about the mural come months after this process started and weeks after the completion of the public art project. The concept for the mural came from the city appointed volunteer board known as the Seguin Commission on the Arts. The arts commission largely is responsible for helping to promote the local art scene, and for each year putting on the Artsfest event. The group had been eager to have another mural painted in the downtown area, and it had some funds on hand to help pay for it. They though honoring the Texas Rangers that helped to form
what is now Seguin, was a good thing. They did hear some concerns from one member of the commission, but overall the board thought it was an important piece of the city's history and it should be enshrined as part of the next mural. The call for artist submissions for the project happened in the spring, artist Chris Garcia's design was chosen and tweaks for months, and finally approved by the city council in August. The mural was finished and unveiled to the public a few weeks ago. Jesus Trinidad says that he knows there was a process followed, but it doesn't change the fact that the city should have been a little more thoughtful when it came to choosing the subject matter for the mural. "One of the things that I would like for the council is that there not be any further murals or monuments here in the city that puts that out there. Let the history books take care of that and let the people judge the Rangers like they should be. I guess now the Rangers are a vital law
enforcement agency and I know they've come here to Seguin and have taken care of some criminal actions that have gone on so they are doing good but back then, we can't deny that and like I said, when you go out there and advertise it like that, it's kind of upsetting to some people," said Trinidad. Leonardo Molina was also among those who spoke out on Tuesday night. He told the council that the mural offends, what he believes is a large part of the community. He says more input should have been sought on the project. "We the Mexicanos in the United States have earned more military honors than any other ethnic group -- percentage wise -- in the United States. We love our country but I don't believe anybody likes this. It would be an insult to our people," said Molina. The mural is a public piece of art that was partially funded using Hotel-Motel Occupancy Tax
Money. No local property taxes were used for the project, and any remaining funding was generated by proceeds from past ArtsFest events. Beto Rincon says because this piece of art was commissioned by a group authorized by the city of Seguin, it makes the decision a little more troubling. He says the mural seems to ignore a big part of the state's history. "I was disappointed in thinking about these words are right here that are staring at me "It's Real." History is real as well and the depiction of that mural to me wasn't quite a very real depiction," said Rincon. The council could only listen to the concerns raised by LULAC, because the item was not on the council's agenda for Tuesday night. There was no request made to have the mural removed, but the consensus from the group seemed to be that the council needs to help find a way to make sure that future public art projects are more inclusive of the people and cultures that make up Seguin.

Jaguars pull away in second half, relegate Matadors to No. 3 playoff seed in regular season finale (Seguin) - Austin-LBJ pitched a second-half shutout and scored the final 28 points of Friday's regular season finale at Nelson Field to hand Seguin a 42-17 loss and leave the Matadors with the No. 3 playoff seed in District 12-5ADivision I. The Jaguars jumped out to an early 14-3 lead on Andrew Mukuba's 95-yard return of the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and a 31-yard pass from Hunter Scott to Mukuba after a 35-yard Seguin field goal by Garrett Stiles. The Mats rallied back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jhalen Mickles to Trevor Waz and a four-yard scamper by Jeravin Contreras to take a 17-14 lead with 6:14 left in the second quarter. Seguin made a critical defensive stop in the res zone during that sequence. LBJ had first-and-goal from the three, but ultimately settled for a field goal that never left the tee because Desvonn Smith pressured the holder and forced him to throw the ball into the turf. The Mickles-to-Waz connection capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions on passes from Mickles to Clark Ullrich and Jonathan Patterson. The Contreras score punctuated a 10-play, 80-yard march kept alive by a fourth-down conversion from Seguin's 40 and a long reception by Marques Washington on a Mickles pass that was nearly intercepted before deflecting off the hands of LBJ safety De'Vonte Sheff.
Seguin had a chance to build a 10-point lead later in the second period with first-and-goal at the LBJ four, but the Jaguars stripped the ball loose from Contreras, recovered the fumble at the 15, and promptly marched 85 yards in 10 plays to reclaim the lead, 21-17, on a seven-yard touchdown strike from Scott to Lamael Hicks with 1:21 to go.
The unofficial stats have Mickles completing 28 of 44 passing attempts for 242 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Washington ran for 85 yards on 20 carries. Ullrich totaled 82 receiving yards on 12 catches, Tristan Moreno 57 on three receptions, and Wax 42 yards on six grabs.
A Joseph Vela fumble recovery with 18 seconds left in the half set up a Mickles heave toward the end zone from the Jaguars' 37. LBJ's Rice-bound cornerback Sean Fresch intercepted the pass at the goal line as time expired.
The loss sets up a 5A Division I bi-district matchup in the Region III bracket with Hutto this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Hippos' home stadium.
The Jaguars extended the lead to 28-17 on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Mukuba with 7:29 left in the third quarter. Seguin's defense kept it close into the fourth period, but the offense stalled. LBJ put the game away with touchdown runs of 43 and three yards by Anthony Haynes in the final six minutes. "Our guys fought hard," Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. "It boiled down to them being able to take over the line of scrimmage, especially their defensive line. We have not seen a better one, and may not. There's a lot of colleges that don't have a d-line like that, so that's what happened. It was close in the first half. We had opportunities. We missed opportunities, they missed opportunities, but that's a football game. In the end, they made more plays than we did."
Bush hopes his team applies the lessons learned against LBJ. "We talked even today in the meeting, really all this is is a dress rehearsal," Bush said. "No matter who you play next week, it's going to be very similar to these guys. They're going to be talented, they're going to be big, they're going to be physical, so it's a dress rehearsal, and we just recapped that afterwards. Now take what you learned tonight. What could we have done better? Because we're going to be in the same situation next week against a similar team, and we're going to have opportunities. What can we learn from tonight to help us possibly not miss those opportunities next week?" The Seguin - Hutto game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Q: I am seeing yellow flowered plants along the roadways and along wooded areas. Are they goldenrod and don’t they cause allergies?
A: That yellow flower, Solidago altissima, is indeed goldenrod, but the allergy part is not so. Our goldenrod is a perennial herb that grows three to six feet tall. The yellow pyramid of flowers appears from September to November and grows in most of the United States and southern Canada. According to Wildflower.org, the plant grows in dry to moist roadsides, thickets, prairies and open woods. In Seguin, you can see the plant in Park West and along 123 Bypass. I do not water my plants. The only moisture they receive is from rain. Goldenrod requires sun to part shade and grows in most soils. Wildflower says the height of the plant is determined by the fertility and moisture of the soil. The plant attracts birds, butterflies, native bees and honey bees. This is because it is a good nectar source and one of the few flowers blooming this time of year. Goldenrod can be propagated by seed or division of the rhizomes. I dug up a rhizome from a clump alongside my road, and all of mine and that of several friends have spread from that first initial plant. People have associated the plant with allergies because the ragweed, which blooms at the same time, does cause allergies. Goldenrod does not. I have collected the blooms and used them for dye. According to the Fall 2013 Wildflower Magazine, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Henry Firestone cross bred goldenrod to get a hybrid that was almost 12 percent rubber. However, this was evidently abandoned as I don’t have goldenrod tires (I don’t think). In the sixteenth century the plant was used to stop bleeding in ulcers and bloody wounds.
Q: Last month Neil Sperry in his garden column said to refrain from pruning fig trees. Why?
A: The new growth on fig trees tends to be vegetative which means it wants to grow leaves, not flowers and fruit. If you are planning to purchase a fig tree, plant it out from the house so that it can grow without pruning. Sperry says figs grow from fifteen to eighteen feet wide. (Mine is huge and I only trim off the bottom branches so that I can get under to weed and mulch.) Sperry also says that when you trim, don’t leave stubs, and avoid high nitrogen fertilizers to minimize the vegetative growth. I don’t fertilize mine but I keep a layer of leaf mulch around the base.
Q: Why some leaves change color in the fall is a question many people have asked Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac.
A: Chlorophyll, which causes the color of green leaves, disintegrates as fall comes with its shorter days and longer nights. This leaves the other pigments in the leaves to show through which includes red to purple anthocyanins, yellow to orange carotenoids and brown tannins. Look around you when you pass a wooded area at the flame sumac which already has red leaves and the changing colors on other trees and shrubs. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
