New changes in store for today’s Veterans Day parade, ceremony

(Seguin) – Today’s Guadalupe County Veterans Day ceremony is moving inside. The annual observance always held on Nov. 11, Veterans Day, will be relocating to the Seguin Coliseum. Over the years, the local ceremony which follows the annual parade has been held at Veterans Park located at the corner of Jefferson and Erkel Streets.

However, this years, Marlin Howze, of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter in

Seguin, says veterans’ groups are making the move in hopes of preparing for next year when the community will be welcoming the Vietnam Traveling Wall to Seguin.

Guadalupe County celebrates its Veterans year round

County recognizes success of Veterans Outreach Center

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County is taking this observance of Veterans Day to also celebrate the late anniversary of its Veterans Outreach Center. The center officially opened late last summer at 205 E. Weinert Street. The vision for such a center, which is a one stop shop for veteran services, remains a unique gem not found in many other communities.

Nancy Russell, the Veterans Service Officer for Guadalupe County, says the VOC works daily with veterans ensuring their needs are being met.

“We’ve been open over a year. We have organizations that have housed on a weekly basis that address mental health concerns, homelessness prevention, nutrition and fitness. We also have the TVC (Texas Veterans Commission), DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and social activities,” said Russell.

Russell says the county should be applauded as more and more veterans are finding their way into their doors.

“We have had so many more veterans coming to see us as opposed to before the VOC was ever built. It’s just exponential and I think the biggest accomplishment is the mental health services because that is really something that our local veterans are taking advantage of because it’s so hard to get those appointments through

the VA and they can just come directly and get those services,” said Russell.

Russell says Guadalupe County leads the area in being a military community and expects more and more growth as folks realize the appreciation that this county has for them.

“Guadalupe County has a total of 17,877 veterans in our county and just to give that some perspective, that compares to Comal which has 15, 840 and Hays County has 12,720 and of our 17,877 – 3, 347 are actually activeduty military,” said Russell.

For years, the VOC sat as a blueprint. Now, although the dust collected from time to time, the energy to one day renovate Seguin’s old hospital into this new innovative space never left the hearts of local leaders.

Clearly taking note of that was Commissioner Pct. 1 Greg Seidenberger, a 20-year Air Force veteran.

“Thank you to Judge Kutscher because he was the driving force behind getting the Veterans Outreach Center done. He has been a champion for veterans and although he is not a veteran himself, he might as well be because he has been a champion for our cause and I thank you for your support,” said Seidenberger.

Outreach, continued.

Although appreciative of his remarks, Kutscher says the VOC has always been the dream child for many. He says it’s also been the result of a team effort and today attributes its success to the small staff who oversee the services being provided to our American heroes.

“I do want to just say quickly thank you very much to Nancy, Dina and Rich – welcome here to Guadalupe County. There’s a very very strong support system for veterans -- not only in Seguin or in Schertz or Cibolo but all over the county. I’m very proud of all the work that is done, and you are looking at the folks that do the majority of that work and we have something very special here because of the people that give so much back to the people that take care of us. So, thank you very much for what you are doing,” said Kutscher.

According to Russell, the small staff that oversees the VOC has a combined total of 45 years of active-duty service – service that all the veterans can relate to when they are receiving support from these individuals.

This Veterans Day, VOC officers encourage local veterans who have not yet stopped by to do so. Not only is the center a location for resources but also serves as a

Parade, continued.

He says because the huge replica of the monument will be brought next year to the Smokey Joe Williams Field at the Seguin Events Complex, they wanted to clear all hurdles of a new location while also having a trial run for a new route for its Veterans Day Parade.

“We’ve arranged for it to come to Seguin, and I don’t know if you have ever visited The Vietnam Wall in D.C., It’s massive. Now, this wall is an 80 percent reproduction of that wall, and it also has other elements that pay tribute to the World Wars, Afghanistan, Iraq Wars and all of these others so it’s going to be a major yet. So, for this year, it’s basically a trial run. So, we are coming down Austin Street. Usually, we go from Central Park to Veterans Park,” said Howze.

Meanwhile, Howze says they are excited about the changes this year and hope that folks spread the word. He says leading things off today will be the annual parade, which instead of Central Park, will start at the Veterans Outreach Center located on Weinert Street. From Weinert, the parade will then head south on Austin Street into the Colisuem.

gathering place for veterans to spend their time. Equipped with an outside patio and grilling space, veterans are invited to simply visit for a cup of coffee or to take a trip around a shaded walking trail.

The VOC is open Mondays to Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Veterans Outreach Center can be contacted by calling (830) 303-8870.

“It’s probably going to be our normal size parade which is about 20 units and proceed down Austin Street into the Coliseum and then, we will gather up at 9 a.m. and then the parade starts at 10 a.m. and we will have a rolling roadblock by the Seguin PD going down there,” said Howze.

Following the parade will be the annual ceremony at 11 a.m. inside the Coliseum. Howze says each year, the group welcomes special guests and honors the various groups of veterans in the community. He says by moving the ceremony inside the Coliseum, it also allows for a more comfortable and cooler environment for those in attendance.

Howze says he encourages families to come out and commemorate the holiday and recognize those who have served and those who continue to sacrifice for our freedoms.

“The main thing is we always want to sit there and bring attention to the sacrifices that military personnel give in service to the country everywhere around the world. We are all over the world right now and it’s quite a dream especially with the hardships that these people are having to do

because it is spreading out assets. So, the guys that are in hostile areas are usually there thin and we are just in the mind that people should be appreciative. We are not looking for extraordinary thanks but they should be appreciative of the fact that young men and women are out there putting their lives on the line usually in some pretty dangerous places,” said Howze.

The observance of Veterans Day began earlier last week when the Guadalupe County Commissioners approved green lighting for the county courthouse and the Veterans Outreach Center as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans.

The Navarro ISD along with St. James Catholic School also hosted their own ceremonies and reading of proclamations.

Other salutes to veterans include the city of Marion at 7:30 a.m.; the city of Cibolo/Schertz at 9 a.m. and Walnut Springs Rehab at 1:30 p.m.

Again, the county wide observance begins with the annual parade beginning at 9 a.m. on Weinert, off of Austin Street.. This year’s new route will travel to the Seguin Coliseum followed by the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m.

Matadors down Brahmas; head to bi-district round

(San Antonio) -- The Seguin Matadors put up over 500 yards of total offense in a 56-32 playoff tune up victory over the MacArthur Brahmas on Saturday afternoon at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.

Seguin quarterback Cory Dailey played the first two quarters and accounted for six touchdowns. The junior hit junior running back Ian Moreno for an eight-yard score in the first quarter. Less than three minutes later, Dailey launched a 50-yard strike to wideout Jacob Burns to put the Mats up 14-0 after the first 12 minutes.

The Brahmas would score twice around a Dailey touchdown pass to tight end Lane Seidenberger to close within 20-12. The Mats would respond with a flurry of touchdowns with just over three minutes left in the half.

The touchdown barrage started when Dailey connected with Ayden Avila for a 57-yard TD. Following a fumble recovery by Seguin defensive tackle Hunter Mica on MacArthur’s next possession, Dailey hit Seidenberger for a 14-yard score. Seguin would then recover an onside kick and score again when Dailey took the ball into the endzone on a fourth and goal from the five to stake the Mats to a 40-12 lead at the half.

In one half of work, Dailey went 13 of 21 through the air for 224 yards. Seguin’s quarterback finished the regular season with 33 touchdown passes. The three-year starter has 76 career TD’s. Dailey also surpassed 6000 yards passing in his career on Saturday.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Kirchner replaced Dailey in the second half and completed 7 out of 10 passes for 60 yards in his first action of the season. Running back Devin Hall ran for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and had his first 100-yard game of the season for Seguin, finishing with 166 yards on 17 carries including a 63-yard TD run late in the game.

Seguin finished fourth in District 13-5A with a 4-3 district record. The Matadors will face District 14-5A champion San Antonio Southwest in the Class 5A Division 1 bi-district playoff next Friday. Seguin will be looking for their first playoff victory in 36 years. The Matadors have gone 0-12 in the postseason since defeating San Antonio Holmes, 34-21 in the bi-district round in 1988.

Seguin and Southwest will play next Friday night at Southwest High School. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and we’ll have the game on KWED.

The Navarro Panthers and Marion Bulldogs will also compete in the postseason. Navarro will take on Carizzo Springs in the Class 4A Division 2 bi-district round. That game will be held next Friday night at Jourdanton High School. Kickoff will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Marion will play Jourdanton at Floresville High School in the Class 3A Division 1 bi-district playoffs this coming Thursday. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Thursday and we’ll have that game on KWED.

Trump Transition Team Hints At RFK Role As “Health Czar”

(New York, NY) -- Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s role in the Trump administration has people in the healthcare space questioning what is next. It’s unclear what his role within the Trump administration will be, but White House transition officials have pointed to a “health czar” position that would not need Senate confirmation. Top governance roles, like FDA commissioner, require Senate confirmation with some experts saying this could be a hurdle for Kennedy, an outspoken anti-vaxxer. Kennedy recently accused the FDA on X of “aggressive suppression of psychedelics, peptides, stem cells, ivermectin, vitamins, clean foods, sunshine, exercise and anything else that advances human health and can’t be patented by Pharma.”

Study Links Daytime Sleepiness To Dementia

(Tours, France) -- A new study suggests that feeling more sleepy during the day as you get older could mean you’re at higher risk for developing dementia. In the study published Wednesday, over 35 percent of those who experienced daytime sleepiness developed a cognitive risk syndrome that could lead to dementia. The syndrome often results in a slow walking speed and memory loss. The French authors of the study said, “Establishing the relationship between sleep dysfunction” and cognitive risk “is important because early intervention may offer the best hope for preventing dementia.”
