Veterans return a thank you to their own support system during annual program By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Although Monday was the national observance of Veterans Day, veterans in Seguin and Guadalupe County are reminded that their service and sacrifices are observed and recognized each day in this community. Whether it be from local leaders, veterans organizations, non-veteran organizations, businesses or church leaders, the extension of support for veterans does exist. Helping to celebrate these American heroes at this year's Veteran's Day Program in Seguin was James Doty, Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General. Doty served as the guest speaker for the program held Monday morning at the American Legion Hall. Doty spoke on this year's theme which appreciates all "those who support our veterans, their families and caregivers."

Doty says a community's own commitment to its veterans should also be applauded. "I'm also a service officer for DAV Chapter #61. I do that as a volunteer job and it's very rewarding but our building is donated by the city of Seguin. I think we lease it for $1 a year in perpetuity. Having that facility so that we can meet with veterans and work their disability claims, two days a week, every week is a tremendous asset that a lot of the DAV Chapters don't have so I think that's important. Judge (Kyle) Kutscher took over the Veterans Treatment Court when it wasn't certain whether or not, it was going to be able to continue in Guadalupe County so we don't take those kinds of things for granted. We understand, it does take a whole community to support veterans and I appreciate the fact that we have some local leaders who really help," said Doty. See VETERANS, page 3

“We’ll get those little devils!”

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

The chicken and sausage plate fundraiser will be served from 5 to 9 p.m.

This year's live auction gets underway at 7 p.m. It will be followed by a performance by the Seguin Matador Band. Mauldin says you don't have to have a child or know a band student to help support the program. He says the band program is a win-win for everyone.

"It's a big day for the band and as you know, the band students here are what we think are the cream of the crop. Studies show that kids who do music,

do better in school. They are better adjusted in life so if you can by and support our band kids, I think it's a great thing for all of us," said Mauldin. Plates will include mesquite smoked barbecue leg quarters and sausage plus potato salad and baked beans. Tickets are $10 each. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Seguin Radio KWED. A drive-thru will also be available from 5 to 7 p.m.

Band Director Stan Mauldin says tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door. "Our community looks forward to the band barbecue every year. It's a traditional thing. It's been going on, gosh, maybe since God invented dirt I don't know. It's been here for a long, long, long time. Last year, we served 2,500 plates of barbecue so 10 percent of Seguin's population came and saw our bands and came through the line. It's a great event for us, a huge fundraiser for all of the band programs junior high and high school so it's a big day for us," said Mauldin. Mauldin says in addition to great food, guests will be treated to music by students from across the district. "We have all of the band kids perform. There's like 700 band kids in the district right now. So, every child in the district will be performing and then there's a silent

auction. There's also a live auction so it's a pretty big event. We've been working right at a year for it. As soon as we get finished with the auction on Thursday, we'll start it again you know the next Monday or Tuesday right after that. So, we've been working on a year on it," said Mauldin. Kicking off tonight's entertainment will be band students at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School. The band will perform at 5 p.m. followed by Barnes students at 6 p.m.

Community encouraged to continue its support of area veterans VETERANS, continued from page 1 Doty also spoke of his time in the army for 32 years. He said during that time, his wife moved a total of 19 years in which to follow his career. He says his story is just one of the million others that illustrate how veterans have been supported along the way. In addition to serving in the military, Doty has also served as a civil servant for the army, a plan-

ning and zoning commissioner and a city council member. After having spent time as a soldier, Doty says he felt it was important to return the favor and continue to support those who need it. "With the deployment tempo and everything, for those who are currently serving, they need the support of the community and just like I said, we have over 20 a day that are taking their own lives so that's way out of proportion of the rest of the population so without the community's support,

the veterans service organizations and those sorts of things, the toll might be a lot larger," said Doty. Hosting the program was the Doug Herrle Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter #61. Members from various other veterans groups were also on hand for the program. A number of other events were also held throughout the community. They included programs at both Seguin and Navarro ISD.

Defending national champion UMHB ends TLU's Marion rolls past Lytle, claims share of conference title bid with 41-3 win in Belton 15-3A-Division I championship (Belton) - Defending NCAA Division III national champion University of Mary HardinBaylor denied Texas Lutheran's bid for its first American Southwest Conference Championship with a 41-3 defeat of the Bulldogs Saturday at Crusader Stadium. In a game to determine the ASC champion and the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA DIII playoffs, the Cru jumped out to a 17-0 firstquarter lead and opened up a 34-3 lead midway through the third quarter. UMHB improved to 9-0 and to 8-0 in the ASC. TLU's seven-game win streak was snapped. The Bulldogs are 7-2 overall and 71 in the ASC. The Bulldogs can finish a program-best second in the ASC with a home win next Saturday against McMurry. The Cru's Marquise Duncan rushed 21 times for 100 yards and a touchdown, and Justin

Theriot added 14 carries for 67 yards and a score. UMHB carried the ball 43 times for 197 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. The Cru defense held TLU to 87 net yards rushing, 2.3 yards per carry. The Bulldogs resorted to the passing game against the Cru after falling behind early. Bulldog sophomore quarterback Wade Freeman threw for a career-high 278 yards, but he also tossed three interceptions. He was sacked four times. Freeman was 26-for-38 through the air. Charles Robinson Jr. caught nine passes for 83 yards, and Mason Perkins had six grabs for 68 yards. TLU's only points of the game came on a Juan Ocampo 28yard field goal at the end of the first half. Ocampo's kick cut the UMHB lead to 20-3 at the half. UMHB started the second half with a Tavion Page kick return of 60 yards down to the TLU

38. Nine plays later, UMHB was in the endzone on a Theriot 1-yard run. The drive covered those 38 yards and took 3:32 off the clock. UMHB ran the ball seven times on the drive. TLU went five plays and 16 yards on its next drive before punting. UMHB got the ball on its own 35 and scored in two plays. The big play was a Jaylan Jenkins pass to Jonel Reed that produced a 61-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs drove into UMHB territory on the next drive. The drive ended on a 4th-and-2 play at the UMHB 40.

(Marion) - Marion jumped out to a 420 lead by halftime and never looked back in a 63-6 stomping of Lytle to claim a share of the District 15-3ADivision I championship in Friday's regular season finale at Veterans Stadium. The Bulldogs are 7-3 overall, 5-1 in district play, and end up with the district's No. 2 playoff seed behind district co-champion Jourdanton, who claims the No. 1 seed by virtue of a head-to-head win over the Marion on Oct. 11. Zach Goodwin lit up the Lytle secondary with 13 completions in 16 passing attempts for 239 yards and four touchdowns.

Texas Lutheran claims 3-1 victory over Colorado College to win first SCAC Men's Soccer Championship

(San Antonio) - Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer captured its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship with a 3-1 victory Sunday over Colorado College.

TLU's only other appearance in the NCAA tournament came in 2002, when the Bulldogs fell 30 to Trinity in an NCAA first-round match hosted by TLU at Gustafson Field. The 2019 Division III men's soccer bracket will be announced on at 12:30 p.m. central (1:30 p.m. eastern) on Monday. The bracket will be revealed in a live selection show available on NCAA.com. In the SCAC final, Green scored for the 20th time in 2019, extending his TLU DIII-era records for goals and points (43).

The Bulldogs' conference title comes 17 years and one day after its first men's soccer championship, won in 2002 in the American Southwest Conference with Head Coach Eddie Salazar as a central defender on the squad. The championship victory, TLU's 15th of the season, set a new school record for wins in a single season. TLU improved to 15-5 overall. CC dropped to 14-6 overall. After a scoreless first half at McGinlay Field on the Trinity University campus, TLU erupted for three second-half goals against Colorado College. Bulldog senior Cameron Townes gave TLU the 1-0 lead with a goal in the 50th minute. Sophomore forward Nicolas Medina pushed the TLU advantage to 2-0 with a shot in the 60th minute, and sophomore forward Luis Green jumped the TLU lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 77th minute. In his 14th season as the Bulldogs' head coach, Salazar has TLU in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship for a second time in school history. "For those that know me, they know how much this program means to me," said Salazar, flanked by Green and defender Lalo Lopez-Rivera in a post-match interview. "And whenever we look at the joy that (the players) can have and see that hard work come all together in two days, it took a long season to get here. And the humility that

Green is now two goals from tying Ariel Larre for the most single-season goals in TLU history. Larre had 22 goals and five assists (49 points) in 1994. Green has scored 38 goals in 38 career matches.

The TLU men's soccer team celebrates the program's first ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship after a 3-1 win over Colorado College in Sunday's title match. (Lopez-Rivera and Green) showed and the rest of the team, that is why we are here." Lopez-Rivera and Green were named the SCAC Championship Defensive and Offensive Most Valuable Players, respectively. Lopez-Rivera, a four-year starter, guided a Bulldog defensive effort that allowed just one goal in 180 minutes of tournament action. TLU defeated Trinity 2-0 on Saturday in the SCAC semifinal round. Lopez-Rivera also assisted on the first goal of the championship match, scored by Townes. In Lopez-Rivera's first year with the team, in 2016, the Bulldogs went 7-12-1 overall

and lost in the SCAC Championship semifinal to Colorado College. Three years after that lost, Lopez-Rivera and the Bulldogs hoisted an SCAC Championship trophy for the first time. "Man, it has gotten way better," said LopezRivera, when asked to reflect on his soccer journey at TLU. "From the start, the first (SCAC tournament) we had, we fell short. And finally we did it, man, after four years of working hard. With this coach by our side, we did it all together." Lopez-Rivera has played in 76 career matches as a Bulldog, and now he will have the chance to play in No. 77 with an appearance in the NCAA tournament.

TLU volleyball closes out season with SCAC quarterfinal loss to Southwestern (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran Women's Volleyball closed out its 2019 season with a three-set loss to Southwestern in the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinal round. In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court), No. 3 seed Southwestern defeated No. 6 seed TLU 25-22, 25-23, 26-24 to advance to the SCAC semifinal. Against Southwestern, TLU was held to .045 hitting

percentage. The Pirates limited TLU to 31 kills and forced 25 errors. Southwestern had seven total blocks. Southwestern hit .129 for the match. Riely Brantley led the Pirates with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .391. She added six block assists. Ali Grona delivered 23 assists for the Pirates, and Lauren Crabtree recorded 10 kills and 17 digs. TLU received 10 kills from Kacie Hall, 14 assists

"It's the grit, and everybody working together," said Green when asked what made this Bulldog championship team special. "Everybody works hard. We train harder than any other team. Consistency is everything. I just have to thank (Coach Salazar). He is the best coach out there. Without him, we wouldn't be anything." The goal by Townes was his 10th of the season and the 21st of his four-year career. The goal by Medina was his fifth of the year and the 12th of his career Colorado College held a slight edge in total shots, 15-10, but TLU led in shots on goal 6-5. Bulldog freshman keeper Caleb Weed made four saves in goal. Colorado College's lone goal came on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. Griffin Meyer scored for the Tigers and had three total shots on the day.

Home and Garden Clara Mae Marcotte is a Texas Master Gardener with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you have a question to be answered, call the Master Gardeners at 830-379-1972 or leave a message to be answered. The website is guadalupecountymastergardeners.org. The Master Gardener research library is open Mondays from 9 to noon, at 210 East Live Oak Street in Seguin.

Q: I am seeing yellow flowered plants along the roadways and along wooded areas. Are they goldenrod and don’t they cause allergies?

A: That yellow flower, Solidago altissima, is indeed goldenrod, but the allergy part is not so. Our goldenrod is a perennial herb that grows three to six feet tall. The yellow pyramid of flowers appears from September to November and grows in most of the United States and southern Canada. According to Wildflower.org, the plant grows in dry to moist roadsides, thickets, prairies and open woods. In Seguin, you can see the plant in Park West and along 123 Bypass. I do not water my plants. The only moisture they receive is from rain. Goldenrod requires sun to part shade and grows in most soils. Wildflower says the height of the plant is determined by the fertility and moisture of the soil. The plant attracts birds, butterflies, native bees and honey bees. This is because it is a good nectar source and one of the few flowers blooming this time of year. Goldenrod can be propagated by seed or division of the rhizomes. I dug up a rhizome from a clump alongside my road, and all of mine and that of several friends have spread from that first initial plant. People have associated the plant with allergies because the ragweed, which blooms at the same time, does cause allergies. Goldenrod does not. I have collected the blooms and used them for dye. According to the Fall 2013 Wildflower Magazine, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Henry Firestone cross bred goldenrod to get a hybrid that was almost 12 percent rubber. However, this was evidently abandoned as I don’t have goldenrod tires (I don’t think). In the sixteenth century the plant was used to stop bleeding in ulcers and bloody wounds.

Q: Last month Neil Sperry in his garden column said to refrain from pruning fig trees. Why?

A: The new growth on fig trees tends to be vegetative which means it wants to grow leaves, not flowers and fruit. If you are planning to purchase a fig tree, plant it out from the house so that it can grow without pruning. Sperry says figs grow from fifteen to eighteen feet wide. (Mine is huge and I only trim off the bottom branches so that I can get under to weed and mulch.) Sperry also says that when you trim, don’t leave stubs, and avoid high nitrogen fertilizers to minimize the vegetative growth. I don’t fertilize mine but I keep a layer of leaf mulch around the base.

Q: Why some leaves change color in the fall is a question many people have asked Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac.

A: Chlorophyll, which causes the color of green leaves, disintegrates as fall comes with its shorter days and longer nights. This leaves the other pigments in the leaves to show through which includes red to purple anthocyanins, yellow to orange carotenoids and brown tannins. Look around you when you pass a wooded area at the flame sumac which already has red leaves and the changing colors on other trees and shrubs. FYI: It is time for falling leaves again. Rather than throwing them away, mow them with your mulching mower. If you just have a few on your lawn, leave them in place. If you have a lot, gather the mowed leaves and use for mulch in your flower or vegetable beds or put in your mulch pile. Bags of leaves can also be taken to the nearest community garden.
