Chief appraiser sends out her final tax bill "It's something that when you think about retirement, it's like that thing that is kind of far off but when you are in a position and when you start thinking about retiring and my family and I have been very prayerfully trying to seek where I should be -- you get that feeling and for me, it's time," said Osborne.
Jamie Osborne By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- The search for a new Guadalupe Chief Appraiser will soon be underway following the retirement announcement of longtime Chief Appraiser Jamie Osborne. Osborne says although her decision is difficult, it is the right one for her and her family.

Osborne has worked for the appraisal district for a total of 23 plus years. She began her role as Chief Appraiser in August of 2006. Osborne, who took a position at the office soon after graduating, says the job, over the years, has definitely experienced many changes. Despite those changes, Osborne says her office has always adjusted and has ensured that the best service possible was delivered to Guadalupe County taxpayers.

"Over the past 13 years, there's been so much legislation that is oriented to the appraisal district and the processes here. Guadalupe County is a growing county which is fantastic -- more people moving in. So I think overall, we just need to be continually trying to focus on the property owners and serving them in the next years just like we have been before," said Osborne.
The appraisal district's board of directors is expected to appoint an interim chief appraiser during its next meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4. That will then allow the board to officially launch a search for Osborne's replacement. Osborne's last day at the Guadalupe Appraisal District is Thursday, Nov. 21.

She says the prizes are provided through various tier levels. She says the gift cards range from the $10,000 grand prize to one of five gift cards valued at $200. "There's a lot of opportunities to win because there is not just one drawing. The

highest one is $10,000 but there are also different levels as well. The first drawing is simply by buying a meal ticket. So the $15 meal ticket, you can win $500 in that and then after that, there's five $200 gift cards. So, you get a chance to win $200 and then, there's drawings for $500 gift cards and then there is six chances for that and you can win $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000. So overall, there's 15 gift cards that are given out and then, the grand prize of course, $10,000," said Kirkland.

(Seguin) -- That spare change in your ash tray is not just a handful of nickels, dimes and pennies. To the Lions Clubs of Seguin, it is what is needed to help change a life by providing the gift of restored eyesight to Texans all over. Lions Club members will be hitting the streets and collecting that change during this weekend's White Cane Day. Marvel Maddox, of the Seguin Sunrise Lions, says the group's commitment to supporting the blind and restoring eyesight are factors in the lions' mission of providing community and humanitarian service. "It's a long tradition in Lions International. One hundred years ago, Helen Keller at one of our first conventions challenged Lions to be knights for the blind and that's why Lions are so heavily affiliated with sight conservation and things. Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Navarro meets Crystal City in 4A Division II bi-district playoffs, Thursday game to air on KWED make sure you make a play on him every time.” The Javelinas are likely to encounter tough sledding against a Navarro defense allowing just 17 points and 253.2 total yards per outing. The aggressive Panthers enter Thursday with 126 tackles-for-loss (18 by defensive end Brady Butler), and 19 forced turnovers. Junior safety Mark Wozniak and linebacker Andrew Guerra both average north of 11 tackles per game. MoMo Sims and Johnny Alegria each have two interceptions on the year.
(San Antonio) - Navarro’s quest to turn an undefeated regular season into a deep playoff run starts Thursday with a 4A Division II bidistrict matchup against Crystal City at Edgewood Veterans Stadium in San Antonio. The 10-0 Panthers are the outright champions of District 13-4A-Division II in Rod Blount’s second regular season as head coach. Navarro meets a Crystal City squad that went 5-5 in the regular season and claimed the fourth playoff seed in District 14 with a 2-3 district record under head coach David Lopez. The Javelinas qualified for the playoffs with a 19-15 win over Carrizo Springs two weeks ago before falling to Hondo 24-6 a week ago.
That dominant defense has been the perfect compliment to Navarro’s Slot-T offense, which cranks out 42 points, 417 total yards, and 395 rushing yards per game while yielding 9.2 yards per carry. The Panthers have only punted eight times in 10 games this season.
Crystal City has relied on a scrappy defense allowing 20.9 points per game to stay competitive and scratch out enough wins for a playoff berth. On the offensive side, the Javelinas’ option attack has produced sporadic results and enters the post-season averaging just 12.7 points per outing. Junior quarterback Nathaniel Mata and senior running-back Justin Bonilla are Crystal City’s primary weapons, and will work out a variety of

Senior fullback Euler Deleon piled up 1,524 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns during the regular season, followed by Sims with 721 and seven scores, and Alegria with 563 and six touchdowns in limited action due to an early-season injury. Alegria is also the Panthers’ leading receiver, hauling in both of Nick Billings’ touchdown passes and totaling 91 yards on four receptions. Thursday’s kickoff at Edgewood Veterans Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage slated for 6:30.

Sonoma Billionaire Donates 100-Million For Brain Research
Researchers Think Hiccups Have Benefits For Babies
(Sonoma, CA) -- A Sonoma billionaire is donating more than 100-million-dollars to brain disease research. Former Citigroup Chairman and CEO Sandy Weill [[ while ]] and his wife Joan say the money will fund a "neurohub", connecting scientists at UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco and the University of Washington, who are already separately looking for cures and treatments for a multitude of brain and nervous system ailments. That includes Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, epilepsy and depression. Today's 106-million donation is on top of the 185-million-dollars the Weill's gave UC San Francisco three-yearsago to establishing the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at its new Mission Bay campus.
(Undated) -- Scientists may have solved the mystery of why we hiccup. A study out of University College London found that hiccupping may help babies regulate their breathing. Apparently, newborns hiccups bring about brain signals that could help babies learn how to monitor breathing muscles. Researchers say hiccups have no known advantage for adults and that it could just be something that stays with us our entire lives.
Survey Shows Most American Workers Work When Sick (New York, NY) -- We all know that many Americans work when they're sick, but a new survey finds that, in fact, a vast majority do. Accountemps, a national staffing agency, polled 28-hundred employees in more than two dozen major cities and found that more than 90-percent come to work when they're sick. The company thinks low unemployment may be a contributing factor and says managers can set an example by staying home when they're sick. Airborne illnesses, such as the common cold and flu, spread easily in the workplace.

Detroit Doctors Explain Double Lung Transplant (Detroit, MI) -- Doctors at a Detroit hospital are giving details of the double lung transplant they performed on a 17-year-old boy. It was determined the patient needed the procedure because vaping caused irreparable damage to his lungs, and needed new lungs to survive. Henry Ford Hospital Doctor Hassan Nemeh called it "an evil" he's never faced before. Officials say the teen is doing fine but has a long recovery ahead. The hospital believes this is the first-of-its-kind procedure for a vaping-related injury in the U.S.
