Seguin ISD Superintendent shares more details behind Town Hall meeting

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is taking its own steps in addressing bullying and the handling of the issue within its campuses. A Town Hall Meeting to discuss bullying and other concerns is being planned for 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 in the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center.

Meanwhile, the community can’t help but note that the town hall meeting comes at the heels of a pair of TV news stories from San Antonio in which they hone in on the alleged bullying problem in the Seguin ISD. Recent tragedies involving the loss of students at Seguin High School reportedly prompted the area media outlet to provide more insight into the issue interviewing parents whose kids have been victimized.

Although the district provided a written statement to the TV station, the district’s perspective was never really revealed.

That’s at least according to Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil who tells Seguin Radio KWED that there’s more to the story.

“I’ll say two things about that. One is as a proactive measure; we reached out to the news channel and actually, I just completed an interview with that same reporter that conducted the other two stories. So, we wanted to get our story out there and that’s how I opened. Thanks for giving us a chance to have a voice in this and secondly, just recognizing that I haven’t’ been here a long time but I am a community member of Seguin and what I recognize is we are in mourning. That mourning manifests itself in different ways in different people. But what we are trying to do is for our students, inform them about ways that they can manage conflict.

Are you ready to gobble up the NEXT $100?

Seguin Today Magazine staff and KWED Radio surprise Brooklyn Haecker with the winning jackpot of $100 for the October Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt. Read more to learn how you can become the winner of the November Turkey Scavenger Hunt now available in this month’s magazine edition. See story on page 2.

Scavenger Hunt winner shares excitement over magazine contest

(Seguin) – Don’t forget that it “pays to play” when you pick up this month’s edition of the Seguin Today Magazine.

The November magazine, again, features its second scavenger hunt contest. This one is called Turkey Day.

Surprised with the winning jackpot of $100 for the October Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt was local resident Brooklyn Haecker. Magazine staff and KWED Radio surprised Haecker with her prize while she worked the counter over at Pecantown Books & Brews.

Haecker says getting the money was just as exciting as when she heard that she had won the contest last month.

“I’m very excited,” said Haecker. “Actually, when I got the call, I started to jump up and down. Everybody was looking at me. It was kind of funny. I was really happy about it.”

This month’s contest will run the same but instead of pumpkins, folks will be stopping by 12 local businesses in search of turkeys.

Participants of the scavenger hunt are simply asked to take the magazine with them when they visit the 12 businesses listed.

Lights & Sirens cornhole tourney set for Saturday

PD, Fire chiefs to compete for bragging rights

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Sign-up is still underway for those looking to become a cornhole champion?

The first ever Lights & Sirens Cornhole Tournament is set for this Saturday at the Pecan Bottom at Max Starcke Park East.

The fundraising event is being hosted by the Seguin Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy Alumni and the Seguin Citizens Fire Academy.

Speaking on behalf of the alumni associations is Jeannette Crabb. Crabb says the groups wanted a fun way to bring the community together in support of the local departments.

“We have watched how these departments really work well together when there is a major incident or a fire or an automobile accident and we thought, we need to come together too as a group and we will share the planning and share the work and share the fundraising that results from this,” said Crabb.

While they expect a number of teams to participate, Crabb says folks won’t want to miss this weekend’s featured matchup.

“We are going to have a featured match between Fire Chief Dale Skinner and Assistant Fire Chief Garrick Herbert and Chief Jason Brady and Assistant Police Chief Rusty Suarez. And as you can imagine, they’ve already

started making enticing remarks to each other and there won’t be a losing team but let’s say that the non-prevailing team is going to have to make a monetary contribution to the alumni association but not their own alumni. They’ve got to make it to the opposing team’s alumni. We wanted to make this a fun event,” said Crabb.

Other events planned include a silent auction, raffles, DJ music, food trucks and desserts.

The tournament gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday. Cost is $100 for a two-man team. To sign up, visit the QR code available on the Seguin PD or city of Seguin’s Facebook page.

Friday Clay Shoot to benefit non-profit still accepting teams

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- A local contractor will be taking a break from the job site this Friday in hopes of filling up those shelves over at the Christian Cupboard.

It apparently is not too late to join Sullivan Contracting Services as it hosts its first ever Charity Sporting Clays Shoot at the Moyesway Shooting Sports Complex in Kingsbury. The fundraiser will be held from approximately noon to 3 p.m.

Jordan Richardson, of Sullivan Contracting, says giving back is at

the heart of the company and felt that the shoot was the best way to give back this holiday season.

“Faith, family, relationships and results – those are our four core values, so our ownership has a heart for the community, and they just want to give back a little bit. So, we decided that we would like to do some sort of larger engagement and fundraiser for somebody that we have already been partnering with. We’ve partnered with the Christian

Cupboard on a small scale for a while now. We just do an ongoing collection that we take over there monthly,” said Richardson.

Richardson says although the clay shoot is this Friday, there is still plenty of time to enter a team of four

“I think we are at 19 teams right now. So, we still have a few available. It will kind of be first come, first serve that way we don’t push it in to having multiple flights of shooters,” said Richardson.

Meeting, continued.

That they can address stress in their lives and just provide them with the tools that they need. It gave us the opportunity to say exactly that – that we live in a society where all of these topics are encountered. It’s not just Seguin ISD. So, however, they chose to do that. We wanted to have our voice out there too just to make it known. Maybe just stating the obvious. This is not a Seguin problem. This is a national problem,” said Vijil.

Vijil says this added attention has since directed the district to further engage the community on the issue of bullying.

“Rather than be reactive, we’re trying to be proactive so this town hall, what I want to illustrate is the fast forwardness of our thinking that we can get more community members involved with this to work toward a solution, a plan, a way to enhance what we already have. So, the purpose of the town hall meeting is that it is going to be set up in such a fashion that we are going to have something set out where anybody who has a question, we will ask them to submit it by Friday. We will provide a link. So that is going to kind of drive some of the topics that we discuss. We can see what is out there. What do people still have questions about after we have responded and also, I will invite different people from organizations of resources that we already have and that we already utilize – letting the community know what we do have in place and where there are areas for improvement,” said Vijil.

Vijil says making this dialogue difficult for the district to address are the federal laws and district policies surrounding student privacy which prevent them from discussing the cases with the public. However, in this town hall meeting, she says the district will be addressing its practices along with the procedures surrounding student safety.

“So, while we can’t get into any specific cases, any specific reports that have been brought forth – in general, I think that we can all agree that bullying has always been a widespread challenge to school districts, to campuses and we are always searching of ways to improve the reporting, the investigating, the closing the loop, the communication, the ways to report bullying, the types of bullying. There is a lot to it. It’s not just bullying as we said in our initial response. These are challenges that we have maybe enhanced by technology, and we are trying to stay a step ahead of young people nowadays. It’s all sorts of topics,” said Vijil.

Vijil says next week’s meeting is designed for progress and hopes that folks remain engaged so that together – they can work toward a solution.

“I think really what I would ask is that people come to us with an open mind and just a solutions-oriented attitude. This is a community problem for us that we are trying to address. It’s going to take a community. Every voice counts but also informing the community about some things that they may not be aware of,” said Vijil.

Parents are encouraged to check their emails for the link in which to submit questions for the town hall meeting. The deadline to submit questions will be 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15. The link is also available on the school district’s website or social media pages.

Clay, continued.

Although Sullivan Contracting is hosting the event, Richardson says other colleagues in the industry are also helping to make the event a success.

“We are going to do a lunch. Masters Electrical (Services), they have donated the food and the cooking of the food. They are well versed in the art of barbecuing. So, they have a pretty nice setup, and we will do the lunch first and then shooting will take a

Contest, continued.

Next, they’ll need to find the matching Jack-OLantern, write down what Jack-O-Lantern went with which business, and then fill out the form. Once individuals are done, they can drop it off or mail it to KWED at 609 E. Court Street. The winning entry for a $100 Visa gift card will then be pulled from all the correct collected entries in a live drawing on KWED Radio on Dec. 3.

Haecker says she knows others will also have just as much fun searching for those fun hidden holiday gems.

“I’m so awkward already and so I’m walking in and

couple of hours and we will come back and do an awards ceremony. We are going to have the Christian Cupboard on site. They are actually participating as well. They have a team that is going to shoot,” said Richardson.

Like Masters Electrical Services, other companies have also pitched in, many of them donating prizes for a raffle. Cost is $600 for a 4-man team. Those wishing to join are asked to contact Richardson as soon as possible at 830-402-8691. Moyesway Shooting Sports is located at 12601 FM 20 in Kingsbury.

they are like ‘hey, how can I help you?’ and I’m like I’m just here walking around doing the scavenger hunt so they got excited too when I came in too. It was all good vibes all the way around,” said Haecker. “I enjoyed the places that actually hid it in the store. I think the hardest one is the vintage store (Dee’s Emporium). That one was the most difficult. She really got creative with it. She hid it in one of the back rooms but I did just enjoy going to all of the places because not one place on that list had I actually been to before, so it was nice actually to meet new people and see the actual stores in town that I hadn’t been to before.”

In fact, Haecker says the best part was visiting businesses that were not necessarily new to the town but new to her.

“I hope lots more stores around town participate because I think that would be good, but I think more people should do it. It was really fun. I got to explore other parts of the town that I hadn’t seen yet and so I think more people should come out and do it,” said Haecker. You can grab your copy of Seguin Today around town or at our KWED office located at 609 E. Court Street. All scavenger hunt entries must be turned in at KWED by Nov. 30 to participate.
