Koennecke Kids get knock on the door for Student of the Month
Amalina Sanchez 2nd Grade
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Being recognized as a Student of the Month at Koennecke Elementary School is no longer just campus news. It's news worth sharing with everyone. The local elementary school on Wednesday
kicked off its recognition of students by traveling to their homes and presenting them with yard signs that read "Koennecke Elementary Student of the Month." School Principal Cassie Koehler who led the caravan of staff members to each of the homes for this first batch of students, says the

First ever Food Truck Friday to park itself in downtown Seguin
angelpest.com 830.379.3277
“We’ll get those little devils!”
MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Today is the official kick-off for Food Truck Friday. Guadalupe County is teaming up with the city of Seguin Main Street Program to host a trio of food trucks in the parking lot just behind the Justice Center. The two will bring together the food trucks and promote the event each third Friday of the month. Drew Engelke, Guadalupe County commissioner precinct 2, helped inspire the

Food Truck Fridays and so we are just hoping that people come out and get a little bite to eat, maybe sit on the picnic tables underneath the oak trees that are in the parking lot and then while they are downtown, they can do a little exploring or do a little shopping with some of our businesses in downtown as well," said Kramm. Kramm says he's especially excited that Food Truck Friday will work in partnership with Third Thursdays. "People have already gotten pretty used to doing the Third Thursdays shopping late in downtown on the third Thursday and so, we want to people to think' I'm shopping late tonight. Tomorrow, I'm coming back to downtown to go to the food trucks,'" said Kramm. Food trucks and food truck menus for this first month will include Davila's BBQ with barbecue and drinks; K&J Roasted Corn with roasted corn, chili cheese hot dogs and hamburgers and Manny's with street tacos, burritos and tamales. Officials say the county will be working with other interested food trucks looking to join its schedule. Food Truck Friday will be held today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the county parking lot located at the corner of South Camp and West Donegan Streets.
Seguin Elks Lodge to host car, motorcycle show By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- It's time to lift up the garage door and put that car or motorcycle on display. The Seguin Elks Lodge #1229 is seeking entries for its first ever Car and Motorcycle Show. The show is scheduled for Saturday in the Elks Lodge parking lot Fifteen trophy classes will be available. They include Early/Late stock, Modified, Custom Antiques, Street Rods and Early/Late Trucks. Seguin Elks Exalted Ruler John Seiler says the car show is being hosted with the help of local business, L&P Motorsports. He says all proceeds raised will go back into sup-

idea. Engelke says Food Truck Friday will not only benefit county employees but everyone who is looking for a bite to eat during today's lunch hour. "It's kind of funny how you are in a conversation with somebody about something else. I was visiting with Kyle Kramm about downtown parking one day and this was after an event that we had had for our county employees. We had a food truck vendor who did snow cones -- something for the county employees. We decided to do a lit-
tle morale booster and it was a success for our county employees and it went off very well and so as Kyle Kramm and I were talking about food trucks in general, I said, 'hey wouldn't it be neat if we had something like Food Truck Fridays?' I just kind of spurted it out in a conversation and then we kind of discussed it a little more, visiting with Cheraun Blankenship our HR (human resources) director. So, one little simple conversation has now turned into this event we are calling Food Truck Fridays," said Engelke. Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director, says he's excited about working with the county in welcoming and rotating different trucks each month. He says it's just another way to bring and keep people downtown. "Just provide a little something unique and different lunch options for that Friday and so kind of the idea that is being thrown around between Main Street and the county of how to move forward -- decided to get the food trucks together in one area so people know all the options that they have and so the best kind of place for that was the county's parking lot at 202 S. Camp St and so we are going to be having food trucks now the Third Friday of the month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it's going to be
porting a local charity. "The proceeds are going to the Texas Elks Children's Camp for special needs kids. Since our inception in March of 1911, that's when we got our charter for this lodge, we in, community charity dollars, we have already put out over $3.7 million to the community," said Seiler. Seiler says a couple of food vendors plus informational booths will also be available for those who attend. "I'm going to have two food trucks. One with regular kind of stuff and the other with homemade Belgian waffles and ice creams and what have you. Then, the lady that runs our children's camp over by Gonzales is going to be there to hand out information and

Matadors seek road upset of Hutto in bi-district playoffs, Friday game to air on KWED
(Hutto) - Seguin chases its first win in the UIL football playoffs since 1988 Friday evening when the Matadors face Hutto on the Hippos' home field in the 5A Division I bi-district bracket of Region III.
Patterson (27 rec., 376 yds., 4 TD).
The Matador defense looks to match up in the trenches and on the perimeter with a versatile Hutto offense averaging 34.1 points, 223.9 passing yards, and 193.8 rushing yards per contest. The Hippos' statistical leaders include sophomore quarterback Grayson Doggett (1,899 yds, 18 TD, 10 Int.), senior running-back Mekhi Kimble (819 yds., 13 TD), and senior receiver/ Texas commit Dajon Harrison (34 rec., 734 yds., 8 TD).
Seguin went 5-5 overall, 5-2 in District 12-5ADivision I, and claimed the district's third playoff seed in Travis Bush's fourth regular season as head coach. Hutto carries an 8-1 record into the playoffs and the No. 2 seed from District 11, with the only loss in a 20-16 battle against district champion Cedar Park. The Hippos, coached by Brad LaPlante, only played nine regular season games because a non-district contest against Houston-Lamar was cancelled in September due to flooding in the Houston area. The Hutto defense has only allowed 15.6 points per game this season and boasts a fast, physical front led by defensive ends Landyn Watson (7 sacks, LSU commit) and Braylon Suggs (17 TFL, 7 sacks), and linebackers Jason Vogelpohl (13 tackles per game) and Al-Amir Ward (15 TFL). Those standouts have combined with an athletic secondary to force 36 turnovers this season - 24 fumbles and 12 interceptions. "It's something you notice on film, not only are they taking the ball away, but they're scoring with those takeaways, returning fumbles, returning interceptions, so they've got an
Beyond matching up with those skill position players, Seguin looks to fare better at the line of scrimmage than it did in district losses to Dripping Springs and Austin-LBJ. "This is the best offensive line as a group we've seen in our four years here," Bush said. "Not only are they big and strong, but they do everything well from a technical standpoint."
Dillion Gutierrez and the rest of Seguin's seniors hope to extend the season in the second round of the playoffs with a bi-district win in Hutto on Friday. Photo by Dustin Wyatt. aggressive defense, they thrive on getting that football, so we're going to have to do a good job of protecting the ball," Bush said after scouting the Hutto defense. Seguin looks to counter with a balanced offense averaging 39 points and 424 total yards per outing behind the
explosive running of Marques Washington (1,153 yds., 19 TD) and the efficient passing of Jhalen Mickles (66 percent, 1,645 yds., 14 TD, 3 Int. 6 rushing TD) to receivers like Clark Ullrich (55 rec., 615 yds., 7 TD), Trevor Waz (26 rec., 247 yds., 3 TD), and Jonathan
The Matadors' defensive leaders include linebacker John Michael Mata (113 tackles), defensive end Ian Box (6 sacks, 19 TFL), cornerback Desvonn Smith (13 PBU), and senior safety Dillion Gutierrez (2 Int. ret. for TD). Friday's kickoff at Hutto Memorial Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pregame coverage starts at 6:45 with the Marion and Lifegate coaches' shows.

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Marion hosts Lyford in 3A Division I bi-district playoff clash (Marion) - It's Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs on Marion's home field in the 3A Division I bi-district playoffs as Lyford pays a visit to Veterans Stadium on Friday.
Coach Israel Gonzalez's Bulldogs have turned a rushing attack that features quarterback Brenden Nunez and running-backs like Abel Gonzales and Osmar Martinez.
Marion went 7-3 in the regular season and shared the District 153A-Division I championship with Jourdanton after posting a 5-1 district record in Ryne Miller's second year as head coach. The Bulldogs ended up with the No. 2 playoff seed due to a head-tohead loss to Jourdanton in October.
Lyford only averages 18.6 points per game, but that number increased to 25.6 in the five district wins.
Lyford carries a 5-5 record and the No. 3 seed from District 16 into the playoffs after rallying from an 0-3 start and a season-ending injury to quarterback Caleb Klostermann to go 52 in district play.
"They've got a great running game, they do a good job, and they do throw the football a little bit, so we're facing another spread team," Miller said. "But I think just making sure we get it lined up right, and try to get some pressure on the quarterback. Our linebacker Cade Baumann's the one making all the calls, puts us in the right position to be successful, so the secondary's got to keep getting turnovers and making plays. Hopefully it will be a Senior Night 2.0
for those guys, and they'll be ready to go." Marion was quite a bit more prolific in the regular season, piling up 32.7 points, 196 passing yards, and 165 rushing yards per outing. The Bulldogs' statistical leaders include senior quarterback Zach Goodwin (1,936 yds. & 18 TD passing, 540 yds. & 9 TD rushing), senior running-back Ray Rayos (697 yds, 4 TD), and receivers Jacob Devora (41 rec., 616 yds., 8 TD), Jayden Williams (34 rec., 538 yds., 3 TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt (20 rec., 400 yds., 5 TD). Friday's kickoff at Veterans Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Miller can be heard at 6:45 p.m. during the Bulldog Report on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, leading up to the Seguin - Hutto broadcast.
TLU looks to post highest win total under Falcons meet Granbury-North Central Gustafson, keep NCAA playoff hopes alive; Texas Academy in TCAL Saturday game vs. McMurry to air on KWED six-man semifinal (San Antonio) - Lifegate Christian School's quest for a second straight TCAL Six-Man state title continues Saturday in a semifinal matchup with Granbury-North Central Texas Academy at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66' Stadium in San Antonio. The Falcons put together an 8-2 regular season in John Stout's first year as head coach and come off their first and only open date after playing for 10 straight weeks. North Central Texas Academy takes a 1-8 record into the semifinals and faces the daunting task of trying to avenge a 55-6 loss to Lifegate on Sept. 20. The Falcons' Quinten Shellnut ran for 348 yards and eight touchdowns in that contest. "We preached that all week, that it's not the same game, it's not the same team, they're not going to come in and just lay down for
us," Stout said. "We're going to have to earn it, and that's what we worked hard for all year, and that's what we're doing right now." Shellnut was the best TCAL sixman spread-back in the state during the regular season. He enters Saturday with 1,896 yards and 42 touchdowns rushing to go with 861 yards and 12 scores passing. David Brewer (289 yds., 4 TD) and Zach McCulloch (277 yds.. 6 TD) have been Lifegate's top receivers. Defensive leaders include Shellnut (72 tackles, 2 Int.), Barson Schmidt (6 sacks, 2 Int.), Brewer (2 Int.), and Joseph Menchaca (6 fumble recoveries.) Lifegate and Granbury-North Central Texas kick off at 5 p.m. Saturday. A complete interview with Stout can be heard Friday between 6:45 and 7:00 during the Falcon Report on KWED 1580AM and Seguintoday.com, leading up to the Seguin - Hutto broadcast.
(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran has plenty of incentive to bounce back from last week's 41-3 loss to defending national champion Mary Hardin-Bayor this Saturday when McMurry visits Bulldog Stadium in the final game of the 2019 regular season. With a Senior Day win, the Bulldogs (7-2, 7-1 ASC) can move to 8-2 on the season and notch their highest win total under third-year head coach Carl Gustafson. TLU went 64 in 2017 and 7-3 last year. A victory would clinch outright possession of second place in the American Southwest Conference. A win is mandatory to keep the Bulldogs' NCAA Division III playoff hopes alive. TLU dropped out of the Top 25, but received votes in this week's D3football.com ranking and AFCA Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs maintained the No. 8 spot in this week's South Region rankings TLU hosts a winless McMurry team (0-9, 0-8 ASC) coming off a 49-36 loss to Louisiana College last Saturday. The War Hawks came close to finding the win column in 21-19 and 29-24 losses to East Texas Baptist and Southwestern last month, but fell apart in a 91-29 setback to Hardin Simmons two weeks ago. McMurry only averages 20.1 points per game and allows the highest defensive scoring average (48.1) in the ASC. War Hawks freshman running-back Dee Robinson ranks fourth in the conference in rushing with 638 yards (5.5 avg.) and three touchdowns. Receivers Eriel Dorsey (35 rec. 438 yds., 3 TD) and Kevin Hurley (35 rec., 616 yds., 6 TD) have shown flashes of brilliance during an up-and-down offensive season.
McMurry's quarterback position has been a revolving door in 2019, but the Warhawks have settled on freshman Carlos Garibay over the past two weeks. He has completed 58 percent of his passes for 444 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in that span, including a 273-yard outing with three scores last week against Louisiana College. Garibay encounters a tall task Saturday against a TLU defense that ranks second in the ASC in takeaways (24), interceptions (13), and sacks (27). The leaders of that unit include TLU's career sack and tackles-for-loss leader Manny Longoria at defensive end, linebackers Derek Dunn (8 tackles per game, 5 sacks) and Sam Guzman (49 tackles), cornerback Kedrick Ward (4 Int. - 1st ASC), and safeties Daniel Enriquez (3 Int.) and James Bell (All-ASC, AllSouth Region in 2018). The TLU offense looks to revive its multifaceted rushing attack after totaling just 87 yards on the ground, averging just 2.3 yards per carry, and failing to score a touchdown for the first time all season in the loss to UMHB. The Bulldogs still feature three of the ASC's top 10 rushers in Chris Monroe (579 yds., 4 TD), Austin Matthews (503 yds, 5 TD), and Wade Freeman (495 yds, 6 TD). Freeman has completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,425 yards, 13 touchdowns, and four interceptions. TLU's top receivers include Mason Perkins (36 rec., 428 yds., 2 TD) and C.J. Romero (27 rec., 489 yds., 8 TD). Saturday's Senior Day kickoff at TLU's Bulldog Stadium is set for 1 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com, with streaming video at tlubulldogs.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:30 p.m.

Elementary school delivers Student of the Month yard signs to local families STUDENT, continued from page 1 Koehler says because she drafted the idea in September, the group is now getting around to celebrating the September students of the month. The first student to plant her yard sign alongside the mailbox on McKnight Road was Koennecke Second Grader Amalina Sanchez. Amalina says she felt proud to have her school visit her home.
important to us and she tries her best to be the best student she can at school. It made her day for sure," said Nichole. Koehler says the idea for the yard signs also allows for the entire school to get into the action.
When asked by the Seguin Daily News why it was important for her to place the sign alongside the road and near her mailbox, the second grader responded, "So everybody knows that I was Student of the Month."
"Our entire staff was invited to come and celebrate these students because we understand it takes a village to raise our students and that village includes our teachers, administration, our office staff, our lunch ladies, our custodians and most importantly, our families," said Koehler. " We are working very hard to strengthen our relationships with our families and our community because we truly understand and value the importance of working as a team to help our students succeed academically, socially and emotionally."
When asked if she knew why she was so deserving of the recognition, Amalina had a few ideas. "I help people in class and like if someone is getting bullied, I help them," said the second grader.
Koehler says what seemed as a simple idea became a powerful moment for families and staff who have all embraced it. She said the emotions of that afternoon even carried over to one student who began to cry.
Surprised by the large group of people that showed up in support of her daughter was Amalina's mother Nichole Sanchez.
Koehler says showing support to students, however, isn't expected to stop with those at the campus. She says the more that can come onboard -- the better.
"I was excited cause I knew I was going to get that (sign)," said Amalina.
Nicole says she couldn't help but be proud on how the school is rallying behind her family and how her daughter's behavior isn't going unnoticed. "It makes me feel very excited because I was not sure how she was doing in school and it makes me know that she is standing out more than we thought she was," said Nichole. Nichole says when you are proud of your children, having a sign to plant in the lawn is also not a bad idea. "I think it will get some attention. She's
"We will be reaching out to local businesses and community members who would like to come along with us to celebrate future students of the month. It is so important that our students not only feel that their personal families are there to support and rally behind them but also their Koennecke family and Seguin community. Together, we can accomplish great things and what greater accomplishment is there than success for all of our students," said Koehler. The Koennecke campus hopes to set out next week by visiting students who earned the recognition for the month of October.

Alicia lived most of her life in Seguin. Those fortunate to have known Alicia knew her to be a kind, loving, welcoming person. Alicia loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She beamed with pride for all of them. Alicia had a great sense of humor. Family and friends
know how she’d sing her funny children’s hymns to any baby she met, she even sang the songs to her (and others’) pets as she danced them on her lap! Alicia had nicknames for everyone she really cared about and KoreyMo, Red, Chickey and the Rugrats are forever privileged to be part of her Pumpkin Patch. Alicia was proud of her work at the law office, she loved to play bingo with her girls, she enjoyed trips to the nail salon and she loved football family Sundays. Though Alicia’s smile will be missed here on Earth, family and friends are grateful to have shared so many smiles with her that will remain in our hearts forever. Now, she is smiling down on us all from Heaven. She is preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Joseph Lee Ramon, granddaughter, Lauren Angel Reyes, brother, Andres Casarez, and sister, Aurora Vasquez; Survivors include her loving husband, Jose R. Deleon; daughter, Iris Garza and husband Marcelino; son, Ruben James Reyes and wife Julie; grandchildren, Korey Ramon and wife Angelica, Marisa Garza and Leah Reyes; greatgrandchildren, Korey Joseph Ramon, Kaleb Jay Ramon, Kristian Jace Ramon; brothers, Julian Casarez III and wife Josefina, Ruben Casarez and wife Regina, Adam Casarez, and Roland Casarez and wife Leo; several aunts and uncles, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving family members and many, many friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Korey Ramon, Caleb Casarez, Cole Casarez, Tony Rios, Jeff Moreno, and Quinton Bagby. In her honor, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 409 W. Krezdorn, Seguin, Texas, 78155. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. CDC Report Warns About Superbugs
Seattle Children's Hospital Patient Infected By Aspergillus Mold
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says more people are being killed from "superbugs" than previously thought. The new report found that 35-thousand people die each year from these drug-resistant diseases. Another three-million are infected by them each year. The CDC says drugs that are meant to be "miracle drugs," no longer perform miracles. Superbugs usually infect people who are frail or elderly, but healthy people can catch them as well.
(Seattle, WA) -- Seattle Children's Hospital is confirming that one of its surgical patients has contracted an infection from Aspergillus mold found in an operating room during a routine air test. A second patient is being monitored for possible infection. The news comes just a day after the hospital announced the closure of three operating rooms due to a reappearance of the same mold that forced it to close all of its operating rooms in May after one patient died and five patients got sick.
NY Raises Minimum Age To Buy Tobacco Products From 18 To 21
Report Says Vaping May Be Worse Than Smoking For Your Heart
(New York, NY) -- New York is now the 18th state to raise its minimum age to buy tobacco and ecigarettes to 21. Governor Cuomo hopes the move will lower the number of teens who are smoking and vaping. Some 28-thousand New Yorkers die each year from illnesses related to tobacco, and at least 39 Americans have died from vaping this year including a Bronx teenager. The Governor blames aggressive marketing to teens by companies such as Juul [[ jewel ]].
Dallas, TX) -- A new report suggests vaping may be even worse for your heart than cigarettes. The report, set to be presented at an upcoming American Heart Association meeting, says vaping can raise certain cholesterol levels that may be bad for your heart. While both vapes and cigarettes dampen the heart's ability to pump blood during exercise there is a twist. The study showed that after the participants stopped exercising, the cigarette smokers' blood flow returned to normal, while the vape smokers' blood flow remained impacted.
