Veterans invited to free Thanksgiving Dinner this Saturday

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – A local church will give “thanks” to area veterans this weekend.

Straight Street Church, in partnership with the Priesthood Motorcycle Ministries, Alamo Chapter, will be hosting a Veterans Day Thanksgiving Dinner. The free dinner will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday in The American Legion Hall.

Senior Pastor Robert Acuna says he is blessed to have crossed paths with the San Antonio organization.

“The San Antonio Chapter has done this every year, and I recently met the president of the Motorcycle Ministries, and he was like we have really been wanting to do this in Seguin and we are looking for a location or a partner who would help us and so we just talked about it. I prayed about it and that’s how it came to be. They have done this for the last five years and so we are hoping to make this an annual thing in Seguin,” said Acuna.

Acuna says they hope to serve as many veterans and family members as possible. He says the meal will be a complete Thanksgiving menu to include turkey and all the trimmings.

Acuna says the meal is the least the groups can do in observance of all veterans and their continued sacrifices.

“Veterans are sometimes a forgotten group of people ––especially our older veterans, those coming back from Vietnam even, they end up homeless and having nothing and no one and it’s really been in our hearts to even start a veterans ministry here in our church,” said Acuna.

The American Legion is located at 618 E. Kingsbury Street. No signup or registration is required.

Family to host memorial car show

Proceeds to benefit local students

(Seguin) – The Garcia Family will remember the loss of one of their loved ones this weekend by sharing one of his favorite pastimes with the community.

Sign-up is now underway for the first-ever Steven Garcia Jr. Memorial Car Show.

The car show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the El Fiesta Ballroom parking lot.

Niece Stefani Trevino says it was three years ago when her family lost Garcia to the COVID pandemic. She says Garcia was an integral part of the community, especially in his role as an instructor at Seguin High School.

“Steve was a very well-known man. Before he was a teacher, he actually owned a body shop. He was even a police officer at one point. He also in his free time on the weekends, he was a DJ, Texas Heat Music, so a lot of people knew him through that and then (he became) a teacher. He became an automotive teacher at Seguin High School but he did not have a college degree so Seguin High School actually paid for him to get his teacher’s degree to be able to teach with them and then eventually over the years, they took away the

automotive part and they switched it to welding so he got his certification with welding and he switched over to (being) the welding teacher and he did that for about 20 years with Seguin High School. So, he’s been there, done everything. He’s always been in car shows as well. He built his own vehicles. He just loved it. That’s why we are doing what we are doing to honor his memory. There’s a lot of history with my uncle,” said Trevino. It was his love for cars and racing, however, that allowed him to bond with most folks throughout the community. This passion, even after his death, is what Trevino says initially inspired the planning of the car show.

“About two years ago, my mom said that my uncle came to her in a dream about a car show so that’s really where the idea of a car show came about and last year, that’s when we decided to make it happen,” said Trevino. The family is hoping that folks bring out all their cars this weekend. Trevino says it will be not only a chance to remember her uncle but also a chance to raise money for a local student. Seguin’s Veteran squirrel finds its forever home along local trail

(Seguin) -- The Squirrel Trail Program officially has its first Hero.

Veterans were gifted their very own squirrel on the front lawn of Walnut Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center located at 1637 N. King St. The squirrel unveiling was part of the many Veteran’s Day events held Monday throughout the community.

Leading that effort for Walnut Springs is Activity Director Star Sutton. Sutton says it was fitting that their facility had a squirrel representing all American Veterans.

“That’s why we unveiled it on Veterans Day because we have 25 veterans here. We are a Five Star facility now – Five Star – the only one in town and we are the only facility in Seguin that has a VA contract with the VA. So, we take care of the veterans here and they pay for them to live here through the VA contract,” said Sutton.

Fulfilling her duties as the artist for the project was Liz Romero. Thanks to Romero, the ceramic squirrel dons all the fine details of patriotism. Sutton says that not only is his tail dressed in the American flag, but his name, Hero, is also a tribute to veterans everywhere.

“His name is Hero because I think every veteran is a hero because when they sign their name and enlist, they became a hero then. I have so many veterans here and I’ve had so many that have passed away here and it’s just a tribute to all the veterans in town and the ones that have gone and the ones that are still here,” said Sutton.

What makes Hero even more unique is the collection of folks who all came together to make him possible.

Sutton says individually, the $2,500 it takes to sponsor a squirrel can be a bit pricey. But as a community, she says anything is possible.

“It takes a village. It takes a village for kids. It takes a village for the elderly. It takes a village for everybody. If we all come together, we can make things happen. Everybody just says, sure Star, no problem. So, I went above and beyond and did the plaque. It says everybody’s name that gave. That was just to thank them. I wanted their

names there. I wanted the American Legion; I wanted the Auxiliary there. I wanted McQueeny VFW there. I wanted Geronimo VFW. I wanted James Reyes’ name on there. I wanted Mr. Steve Million’s name on there, Mr. and Mrs. Zuniga – Mr. Zuniga is our administrator’s husband that is a veteran. I just wanted the people to know that I appreciate them, and we can do more squirrels if they say ‘let’s all get together and do one,’” said Sutton.

Hero marks the 16th squirrel for the city-wide trail which promotes art in public spaces. The squirrels are sponsored by community members and organizations who then commission a local artist to paint them. The program is supported by the city of Seguin and the Seguin Commission on the Arts.

Show, continued.

“We are asking drivers who are wanting to put in their vehicle to arrive about 9 a.m. The car show, honestly, is going to be a variety of different categories. We were trying to make sure to include everybody that has different types of vehicles ranging from classic cars, model cars to people who do hot rods, freestyles –modifications stuff like that. We have had a lot of businesses donate a

lot of items so that we can raffle off to be able to provide a scholarship for a Seguin High School welding student since Steve was the welding teacher. He retired with Seguin High School,” said Trevino.

Check-in for vehicles will be at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Early registration is $15 a vehicle or $20 on the day of. The El Fiesta Ballroom is located at 735 IH-10. To register in advance, contact Trevino at 830-305-6052. They may also stefanitrevino22@gmail.com.

New Studies Link Online Media and Depression

(San Diego, CA) -- A new survey reveals there’s a correlation between excessive media scrolling and “very poor” mental health. The average American spends six hours consuming some type of online media every day. Older people who generally consume less media were more likely to say their mental health is excellent or good compared to younger generations. Two-thirds of Gen Z-ers surveyed agreed that they spend too much time consuming content, and more than half say their mood is often negatively impacted by social media. They’re the most likely to be on their screens 15-plus hours a day.

Overtreatment Of Prostate Cancer Increasing

(Undated) -- A new study shows overtreatment of prostate cancer is increasing in the U.S. in men with limited life expectancy. The study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine shows about 66 percent of men with intermediate-risk prostate cancer are getting treatment that often is useless or harmful. That number is 50 percent when it comes men with high risk cancer. Those with the study say patients with life expectancies of less than five or ten years were subjected to treatments that can take up to a decade to improve their chances of surviving cancer, despite guidelines recommending against treatment.
